In this episode, we're taking a closer look at ketosis and how the ketogenic diet has evolved beyond just a weight-loss tool. I'm joined by Dr. Dominic D'Agostino, who unpacks the science behind Ketone Metabolic Therapy (KMT) and its growing role in treating conditions like epilepsy, neurological issues, and metabolic disorders. His research sheds light on the therapeutic potential of ketones, which are not only vital for energy but also key players in reducing inflammation and enhancing brain health. We also clear up some common misconceptions about keto, like battling the keto flu, and talk about practical ways to adopt and optimize the diet for better overall health. Whether you're curious about using keto for disease management or just want to understand how it can support mental and physical wellness, this episode has something for you. It's all about understanding the science and making the keto lifestyle work for your body! Key Takeaways: The ketogenic diet historically originated as a treatment for epilepsy and has expanded to other therapeutic areas, such as metabolic syndrome and neurodegenerative diseases. Ketone bodies, especially beta-hydroxybutyrate, perform dual roles as potent energy sources and cell signaling molecules that offer anti-inflammatory benefits. Keto metabolic therapy (KMT) encompasses multiple approaches, including diet, fasting, and supplements, to maintain therapeutic ketosis. Adoption of a ketogenic lifestyle may require supplement support, particularly with electrolytes, to avoid side effects like keto flu. Variations in genetic and gender responses can influence the effectiveness and experience of ketosis, necessitating personalized dietary adjustments.   More of  Dr. Dominic D'Agostino: Dr. Dominic D'Agostino is a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of South Florida (USF) Morsani College of Medicine and serves as a Visiting Senior Research Scientist at the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC). He earned his B.S. in Nutritional Science and Biological Sciences from Rutgers University in 1998, followed by a Predoctoral Fellowship in Neuroscience and Physiology at Rutgers and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) in 1999. In 2004, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Neuroscience at the Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University in Ohio before joining USF in 2006. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Dr. D'Agostino leads a lab focused on developing and testing nutritional strategies and metabolic-based therapies for neurological disorders, cancer, and metabolic optimization. His research includes both basic science studies and human clinical trials. He has a personal interest in environmental medicine and developing methods to enhance the safety and physiological resilience of military personnel and astronauts in extreme environments. Dr. D'Agostino's research in metabolic control and neuroscience is supported by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), Department of Defense (DoD), private organizations, and nonprofit foundations. 75 years ago, the Office of Naval Research (ONR) helped kickstart innovation in Silicon Valley with a series of grants to Fred Terman, Dean of Stanford's Engineering school. Terman used the money to set up the Stanford Electronics Research Lab. He staffed it with his lab managers who built the first electronic warfare and electronic intelligence systems in WWII. This lab pushed the envelope of basic and applied research in microwave devices and electronics and within a few short years made Stanford a leader in these fields. The lab became ground zero for the wave of Stanford's entrepreneurship and innovation in the 1950's and 60's and helped form what would later be called Silicon Valley. 75 years later, ONR just laid down a bet again, one we believe will be equally transformative. They're the first sponsors of the new Gordian Knot Center for National Security Innovation at Stanford that Joe Felter, Raj Shah, and I have started.

Dr. Dominic D’Agostino is a leading researcher into the therapeutic effects of the ketogenic diet. He is featured on Joe Rogan, Tim Ferriss, Impact Theory, TED, and dozens of other top media outlets. This is a wide-spanning conversation on high fat diets, time-restricted feeding, fasting, and even nutrition psychotherapy.Who is Dr. Dominic D’Agostino? Dominic D’Agostino, Ph.D., has maintained involvement in a vast array of professional, academic and personal endeavors. As an Associate Professor with tenure at the University of South Florida, Dom teaches students of the Morsani College of Medicine and the Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology, with a focus on such topics as neuropharmacology, medical biochemistry, physiology, neuroscience, and neuropharmacology. He is also a Research Scientist at the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC) to assist with their efforts towards optimizing the safety, health and resilience of the warfighter and astronaut. His laboratory develops and tests metabolic-based strategies for targeting CNS oxygen toxicity (seizures), epilepsy, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer. To investigate the mechanism of these pathologies he uses a variety of in vivo and in vitro techniques, including radio-telemetry (EEG, EMG), electrophysiology, fluorescence microscopy, confocal microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), biochemical assays and in vivo bioluminescence imaging. His laboratory has adapted many of these techniques for use inside environmental chambers, which allows them to manipulate oxygen concentrations (from hypoxia to hyperbaric oxygen). His current project is to identify cellular mechanisms of seizures from CNS oxygen toxicity and to develop mitigation strategies against it. His efforts have focused specifically on measuring brain EEG, neuronal excitability, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and biomarkers of oxidative stress. The main focus of his lab over the last 10 years has been understanding the anticonvulsant and neuroprotective mechanism of the ketogenic diet and ketone metabolite supplementation. The shift in brain metabolism (from glucose to ketones) reduces neuronal hyperexcitability, oxidative stress and enhances brain energy metabolism. This approach can be used to treat a wide variety of pathologies linked pathophysiologically to metabolic dysregulation, including cancer. Other areas of interest include researching drugs that target cancer-specific metabolic pathways. He was a research investigator and crew member on NASA’s Extreme Environment Mission Operation (NEEMO 22) and has a personal interest in environmental medicine and methods to enhance safety and physiological resilience in extreme environments. His research is supported by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), Department of Defense (DoD), private organizations and foundations. With a wide range of research interests, Dominic D’Agostino holds membership in the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Society, Aerospace Medical Association, Society of Neuroscience, American Physiological Society, and the American Association of Cancer Research, additionally serving on numerous editorial boards and as a Reviewer for dozens scholarly publications. Before joining the faculty at USF, D’Agostino completed a postdoctoral fellowship in neuroscience at Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University. Our reliance on Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) is growing. As CPS infrastructure becomes exposed to the contested world through networks, CPS security becomes much more important. In a CPS, the cyber components manage the physical components. We propose that the overall goal for CPS resiliency is to have the physical systems behave properly regardless of fault and disruption. Our approach to CPS resiliency focuses on the physical components. Specifically, the inertia of the physical components provide a natural but limited resilience, and is capable of tolerating short-term disruption without affecting the health and safety of the CPS. This and the fact CPS have a large difference between physical and cyber time scales, enables a unique approach to CPS resiliency. This talk will present our approach of engineering the cyber components to be brittle against attack, which consequently forces cyber attacks and related disruptions to be short-lived and within tolerance of the physical system's inertia. About the speaker: Mr. Mickelson is a Principal in MITRE's Naval Program Division.  Matt has spent twenty years integrating emerging technologies, including cyber, AI, and autonomy, to improve some of the world's largest organizations.  He has given invited talks in academia and industry.  He was a keynote at last years IEEE ICTAI conference and recently an invited speaker for the National Cyber Security Alliance at the NASDAQ.  As a child, he convinced his parents they needed a color TV, and ever since, he has had a passion for identifying and developing disruptive technology.  Now, he actively coordinates advanced research programs in cybersecurity at the Office of Naval Research (ONR).

We are certainly hearing a lot these days about the ketogenic diet, and with very good reason. It may turn out that this dietary approach is the most powerful intervention we could entertain, in terms of providing the most salubrious environment for the body and the brain! I’m going to tell you right up front, today’s interview is a bit scientifically intense, but nonetheless absolutely worthwhile. I had the great honor to speak with Dr. Dominic D’Agostino. He is is an Associate Professor in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine. Our time together explored the mechanisms involved in terms of how ketosis is so powerfully beneficial for brain cells and brain health. Again, it is certainly a bit detailed from a scientific perspective, but the information is, in my opinion, hugely valuable.

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/dom A few months ago, I recorded a , in which Dr. Veech claimed that the form of ketones most people take to get into ketosis are actually quite dangerous. Dr. Veech's solution was something called "ketone esters", which are extremely expensive, but, according to him, a far more natural, safe and healthy way to quickly get the body into ketosis - for anything from managing medical conditions, to improving cognition, to increasing endurance and beyond. In the video below, I actually experimented with these  myself and, as you can see, the results were astounding... After shooting this video, I took another bottle of ketone esters to a Tough Mudder event and recorded a crazy video on Snapchat during which I elevated both blood glucose by drinking 75 grams of pure glucose and elevated blood ketones by drinking a bottle of the ketone salts, and the results were equally as astounding, resulting in one of the fastest races of my life. But the question remains: are these fancy, expensive ketone esters actually far better than ketone salts? Are ketone salts, which is what most people use, actually going to result in long term health issues? In today's podcast, I bring on ketosis expert Dr. Dominic D’Agostino to get his opinion. Dominic is an Associate Professor in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine.
