Tulsi, also known as Holy Basil, originates from the Indian subcontinent and is widely cultivated in Southeast Asian tropics. Revered as the Queen of the Herbs, Tulsi holds significance in Hindu culture as a sacred plant, an avatar of Lakshmi the consort of god Vishnu. With upturned leaves reaching towards the sun, Tulsi is considered blessed by deities, symbolising divine origins and eternal blessings. Aligning with Tulsi is seen as a means to invite abundance, joy and prosperity. The plant's cleansing properties make it a protective force when diffused in a space, deterring negative energies and even thieves. Beyond its spiritual symbolism, Tulsi helps individuals navigate life's challenges, fostering focus, resilience and reclaiming control. In the midst of life's distractions, Tulsi guides inner focus, aiding women during menopausal transitions and supporting mental clarity. We highlight southeast Asia a fair amount in this conversation, so Apurba does a little analysis on the differences in, for example, Korean cuisine vs. Thai vs. Lao, especially with their use of spices. Eric, Ana, and Apurba then dive into a variety of locations where you can experience Filipino Lumpia, Korean BBQ, Pho (watch how you pronounce it!), Tom Yum and Tom Kai Soup, Momo, and more southeast Asian dishes. We also discuss African dishes such as Sambua, Josef rice, peanut stew, fufu (a pounded yam), spicy beef eugusi, and more; Indian and Himalayan dishes from Smoke Tandoori Chicken and Lamb Chops to achaar, Biryani dishes, Dal, Chickpea Masala, and more.We also touch on South America with emerging Peruvian and Venezuelan cuisine becoming increasingly popular across Wisconsin. "Lester Bowie": instead of thinking of that sound as a person's name, maybe we should start thinking of it as a verb.  Here's one definition: to change the orientation of something familiar so that it becomes unimaginably magnificent. Example: "I'm going to Lester Bowie this pebble and make a beautiful jewel out of it" or "I'm going to Lester Bowie these old tires into a holiday feast." It helps if you apply a bit of magic as Lester always seemed to manage to do.    This Monday night on Jazz Alternatives, Eric Person and host Mitch Goldman put Lester Bowie in Deep Focus.  While Lester may be more familiar from his work with the Art Ensemble of Chicago and Brass Fantasy, Eric and Mitch are digging somewhat deeper.  Once again, gems from the WKCR archives abound.     Only on WKCR 89.9FM, WKCR HD1 and wkcr.org this Monday from 6pm to 9pm NYC time.  Next week it goes up on the Deep Focus podcast on your favorite podcasting app or at https://mitchgoldman.podbean.com/   #WKCR #DeepFocus #JazzAlternatives #EricPerson #LesterBowie #MitchGoldman #JazzInterview #JazzPodcast    Photo credit: Lester Bowie, Sweet Basil, NYC by Anthony Barboza, Collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.  Fair use.

050: Nicole NelsonGood morning! This is Play It Like It’s Music. I’m Trevor, thanks for listening. On Wednesday July 29th of 2020 music is not content, it’s connection. This is episode 50.[photo by Thom Adorney]Every now and then, if you get around to clubs and stuff to hear people (remember?), you come across a sound and a vibe so stunning that you never forget it.I’ve become a fan of so many artists, and oftentimes the fanhood is based on nothing more than the memory I have in my senses of the first time I heard their “it”. Whatever it is that makes them them. I’ll keep turning them on and going out to see them for years, sometimes with just the hope that I’ll catch another moment like that first one.It was like a portal opened up and boom, there was this musical spirit just lifting the dust out of the cracks right in front of you. I remember moments like that every time I used to go see Tony Scherr’s trio every Monday. I remember that moment when I was on the gig with Bisan here in the Canyon. Krystle Warren is a never-ending moment like that, pretty much every time she makes a sound. Further back, I got to see the Gil Evans orchestra on a Monday night in Sweet Basil, I saw Radiohead turn the world around in New Jersey about a month before 9/11, I’ve been to Jazz Fest in New Orleans… hell I’ve just walked around the streets of New Orleans. These are all landmark moments of my musical life.Today is Episode 50 of this show, and I couldn’t be more blessed than to have another stellar artist and performer to speak with. Yesterday was my birthday, today we have episode 50, we’re pushing two straight months of Black Lives Matter protests all over the nation, James McBride’s new book is tearing it up on Oprah and Michelle Obama just launched her podcast. Given that there’s so much going on, now and perpetually, I’m extremely grateful for your ears and your attention and your fellowship and your celebration of our shared musical experience. This show is for you, in those moments when we are most alone and doing out hardest work in the shadows, far from the stage. It’s here for you whenever you need it and I’m honored to have you listening. Thanks to all the guests we’ve already had on here and thanks to all who are yet to come on, you mean the world to me.So… onward:[photo by Eric Antoniou]The first time I heard the band called Dwight and Nicole was on a night when I was opening for them at Banjo Jim’s, and I walked out a changed man. Forever grateful to them for the sound they brought. Sure enough, that portal opened right up. It was just the two of them on stage but the guitar and the tambourine and the voices sat just right in the coziest pocket you’ve ever witnessed. The groove wouldn’t quit and by the time they were done, folks in the audience were all ready to make babies. They are incredible, and today we’re speaking with Nicole Nelson.Like I said, I couldn’t be happier. Not only has she got the voice for the band, but she went on The Voice and nearly took the thing. We get to hear her whole background today and get a taste of what it feels like to know you have the talent and the genius and the grit to get up there, and then hear some of the plot twists that happened along the way. I’ll cut to the chase at this point, since I know you came for the gold. Joining the podcast today is actor, writer, director and longtime jazz fan Michael Imperioli, best known for his role as Christopher Moltisanti on the HBO hit series The Sopranos, for which he won an Emmy in 2004. Imperioli's other onscreen credits include award-winning movies Goodfellas, Bad Boys, Lean on Me and Last Man Standing, as well as the Spike Lee productions Malcolm X, Jungle Fever and Summer of Sam, which he co-wrote and co-produced. In 2018, Imperioli published his first novel, The Perfume Burned His Eyes, which chronicled the life of a Queens teenager who moves with his broken family to Manhattan and goes on to befriend Lou Reed, a luminary of the 1970s downtown New York rock scene. Imperioli is an avid admirer of that historic musical era in New York City, and an enthusiastic champion of rock and roll in general. But he's also a passionate jazz fan and an active member of the Jazz Foundation of America, an organization that provides financial support, housing assistance and disaster relief to musicians in need. On October 19, he'll return to his duties as co-host —along with actor Danny Glover — of the Jazz Foundation of America's Loft Party in New York City, a concert benefiting JFA's lifesaving programs. It will feature performances by Wyclef Jean and The Pharoah Sanders Quartet, along with a tribute to Miles Davis' Bitches Brew and a celebration of New Orleans icons Dr. John, Dave Bartholomew and Art Neville. The drum legend Roy Haynes will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award. If you're in the area and would like to support, you can buy tickets online at jazzfoundation.org. In this episode, Imperioli talks about the records that brought him to the jazz flame, his total infatuation with Charles Mingus and Ron Carter and the time he smoked a joint with Gil Evans outside the jazz club Sweet Basil. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/brian-zimmerman/support

Nella puntata di oggi ascoltiamo un brano dei Police, Shadows in the Rain, Little Wing (in cui Sting cita anche From Me to You dei Beatles) e There Comes a Time.

Theo Croker was born and raised in Leesburg, in central Florida, on July 18, 1985. Leesburg was not exactly a hotbed of music, and Theo wasn’t exactly born with a horn in his hand. He first picked one up at the age of eleven, after a visit to New York City where he heard his grandfather play at Sweet Basil. (Doc Cheatham died the following year, at 92, in 1997.) Theo continued to listen to Doc’s recordings. Theo says, “I would just sit in my room and play my trumpet for hours without knowing what I was doing. I would slowly teach myself new notes and play along with recordings of my grandfather and other greats. I noticed the I could fit in with what I was hearing harmonically.” It was at a memorial service for his grandfather when he had his first chance to perform for jazz-savvy audience. “I was only twelve years old, but the way the music touched people and the way it made me feel was enough to set me for life. I knew it was what I wanted to do.” •••• The B-Side Podcast is produced by Charlie Hoxie, Kecia Cole, Ro Johnson and Sachar Mathias; recorded by Onel Mulet; and edited by Khyriel Palmer and Emily Boghossian.
