Abstract: The Zwicker tone illusion can serve as an interesting model for acute tinnitus, an auditory phantom percept still not fully understood. Recent mechanistic models suggest that the underlying neural mechanisms of both percepts are similar. However, to date it is not clear if animals do perceive the Zwicker tone at all, as up to now no behavioral paradigms are available to objectively assess the presence of this phantom percept. Here we introduce, for the first time, a modified version of the gap pre-pulse inhibition of the acoustic startle reflex (GPIAS) paradigm - usually used to assess the presence of a tinnitus percept in animals - to test if it is possible to induce a Zwicker tone percept in our rodent model, the Mongolian gerbil. Furthermore, we developed a new aversive conditioning shuttle box learning paradigm and compare the two approaches. We found a significant increase in the GPIAS effect when presenting a notched noise compared to flat white noise gap pre-pulse inhibition, indicating that the animals actually perceived a Zwicker tone. However, in the aversive conditioning learning paradigm, no clear effect could be observed in the discrimination performance of the tested animals. When investigating the CR+ responses, an effect of a possible Zwicker tone percept can be seen, i.e. animals show identical behavior as if a pure tone was presented, but the paradigm needs to be further improved. How are scars from nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) different than physical scars that are unintentional or result from non-self-inflicted wounds ? What psychological effects can result from daily reminders of one's own decision to self-harm? Is there an association between NSSI scars and suicidal thoughts and behaviors? In this episode, Dr. Burke discusses the mixed relationship that many people who self-injure have with the scars they bear from NSSI and how some may feel the need to hide their scars even from themselves. Learn more about Dr. Burke and her work by clicking here or visiting the Mood & Behavior Lab (MABL) at www.moodandbehaviorlab.org. Have you ever thought about the value that surrounds you and I everyday? Well, if your answer is no, don't worry, you're as normal as the rest of us. That's why in this episode we will discuss how to become more aware of the value all around us and how that impacts our life purpose!   Show notes: There's value all around you and I.  That means there are people, things, resources all around us that are just waiting to add value to our lives, which will enrich our life purpose. The question is how aware are you of the value currently surrounding you? Here are a few value blinders that could prevent us all from recognizing the great value in our midst Distractions: We are surrounded by noise! Digital Marketing experts estimate that most Americans are exposed to around 4,000 to 10,000 advertisements each day Self-consumed: Psychologists Matthew Killingsworth and Daniel Gilbert found that the human mind is actually wired for this state of continuous distraction. In a study conducted with 2,250 adults, they concluded that we spend around 47 percent of every waking hour "mind wandering." Also called "stimulus-independent thought," mind wandering is an experience that so ordinary, so natural to us, we don't even notice it.  Psychologist Martin Wolgast states in the Journal of Psychopathology and Behavioral Assessment that distraction can be a strategy of emotional regulation. Emotional regulation refers to the way we deal with feelings like anger, excitement, frustration, anxiety or low mood and is affected by the stimuli we are exposed to. Transactional relationships: We are use to relationships that are predominantly transactional. What can this person do for me types srelationships prevent us from recognizing the value in others. So how do we unlock the value all around us? Focus on serving! When we focus on serving we unlock the value around us! What can I get vs what can I give/offer.   Key Takeaway: Assess your daily focus this past week. Have you paid attention to the value around you? Or have you been more focused on self, distracted, or maybe just transactional in your relationships.   Let's be more intentional, how can we serve and add value to those in our “6 degrees”. This will not only add value to the lives of others, but it will add value to yours as well.   The greatest value I've received in life has come while serving, and intentionally valuing those around me. If you apply this principle you will find the same to be true for your life!

Macht also führt zur erhöhtem Begehren. Viel Spass! With recent events and the resulting protests due to social injustice, the current moment has shaken many of us in a way that inspires us to shape a better future. In this episode, I speak to Diversity and Inclusion Strategist Kristina Smith about diversity, race and the importance of having the ability to be exactly who we are in our work and in the world.   Kristina's Bio: Professional Background: Kristina Smith, CDP (she, her) has spent the bulk of her career in training and development.  This laid the foundation to develop performance improvement strategies for corporations.  She has been successful at helping organizations build stronger teams through specific team development activities, strategic planning with leaders and designing programs to develop bench strength in companies.  Coaching C-Suite and mid level managers was a large part of her success ensuring businesses met their goals and objectives. Kristina has worked with corporations, government, and non-profits.  Her greatest strength is her ability to communicate with all stakeholders.  She facilitates conversations between frontline team members and management. These conversations make it possible to find solutions to some of the organization’s toughest challenges.  Diversity, Equity & Inclusion: While working to help teams improve performance, she frequently uncovered data which led to devising and implementing diversity and inclusion (D&I) strategies to exceed expected business results.  She has hosted conversations about race, how to create more equitable workspaces, and how leaders in the C-Suite can mentor women and people of color to assist in their advancement, retain them and create inclusive environments. Sometimes, diversity training is not the answer to solving a workplace dilemma.  Facilitating a structured conversation is what allows teams to express where an organization may be missing an opportunity to use the employees’ talents and strengths.  By tapping into this unused potential organizations are often amazed at how this benefits their company.  Facilitating, Coaching, and Conversations: Kristina has trained teams to lead large scale change initiatives as change agents.  Teaching facilitation techniques empowered front line leaders to have a dynamic impact within their teams.  She is adept at coaching C-Suite and mid level managers to bring out the best in their employees, thereby creating more desirable workplaces.  As a Conversational Intelligence (C-IQ) Coach, Kristina facilitates difficult conversations about race, racial inequity, and creating equitable workspaces for all.  Kristina shares tools that can help team members navigate difficult conversations with people who are different. Education: Kristina earned a B.S. in Communication Disorders at Emerson College.  She attended Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School and received a graduate certificate in Managing Change in Organizations. To better understand individuals, couples, and teams she received a certification from the Relationship Coaching Institute.  Expanding on the concept of understanding different groups of people she participated in workshops at the Multi-Cultural Institute.  This training eventually led her to become a Certified Diversity Professional (Institute for Diversity Certification).  Kristina is certified to deliver the DiSC and the Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team.  The DiSC is a Behavioral Assessment that allows individuals to know themselves and work with others better.  She is also certified in Conversational Intelligence (C-IQ).  This is the neuroscience of how the brain works when people are in productive and unproductive conversations. She received continuing education credits in Executive Coaching and is currently enrolled in the Purpose Development Coaching program. He has been on the admissions team at Yale since 2004, becoming the Director in 2006 and the Assistant Dean in 2012. Let’s start with the basics. Can you give me a brief overview of the distinctive elements of Yale SOM’s full-time program? [2:09] There are three things I would point to. Among U.S. business schools I think we are the most integrated with our home university. Students truly can take advantage of all Yale has to offer and be involved in the whole university community. We are also the most global business school in the U.S., really focused on creating a global mindset. It is built into our curriculum, and with 45% of our students being non-U.S. citizens, that permeates the community. Last, we are the best source of elevated leaders across all regions and sectors. You will get accounting, finance, and marketing just like every business school, but we teach in a different way. It is very interdisciplinary. Your career will not be functionally siloed like the past, so we teach subjects in a way that reflects that. We utilize a lot of raw cases, so even in the classroom students are learning real world skills, since other people will not be making decisions for you in your future jobs. What’s new at Yale SOM? [5:15] The biggest thing is we have a new dean who started July 1st. Kerwin Charles joined us from the University of Chicago. He is a labor economist. So far he has had lots of town halls, and has been thoughtful, diligent, and caring about the school and understanding of its mission and values. He is doing a wonderful job of listening and learning at this point, and we are very excited to have him. We also have a new one- year master's program – an MMS in Asset Management that complements our other one year master's programs. It takes advantage of being in the hedge fund corridor. With our one-year programs we are building out a portfolio of courses and more advanced curriculum that business school students can take advantage of. There seems to be increasing interest in deferred admission programs. Yale has one of the older ones. Can you tell us about the Silver Scholars program? What are you looking for in applicants to this program? [10:08] You start at Yale the fall after you finish college. It is a three-year program including the internship. Student do their first-year, core MBA courses and then do an extended one year internship. They then come back for the second academic year, which is entirely electives. The idea is that students learn what their gaps are during that year, and then can address them with the electives to become a more complete leader. It is more accelerated that most deferred programs, and for us makes more sense in terms of what you are able to accomplish and optimize at certain points in your career. In terms of what we are looking for, the application is the same for non-Silver Scholar applicants. We tend to weight academics and test scores more heavily since they don’t have fulltime work experience. We do look at internships as well, but more as markers for what an applicant is able to accomplish in a limited time and the propensity to lead and take on potential roles. It is important to have some sense of direction career-wise, as well,

We’re a couple of weeks into the new school year by now and I hope that for most of you the morning drop-offs have gotten a bit easier than they were in the beginning. But some of you may still be struggling with a child who doesn’t want to go to school, who resists you leaving at drop-0ff time, and who might be suddenly suffering from stomachaches and headaches (particularly on Sunday nights or weekday mornings) that had not previously been a problem. Today’s interview with Dr. Jonathan Dalton (http://www.changeanxiety.com/about.htm#Dalton) , director of the Center for Anxiety and Behavioral Change in Rockville, MD is going to help us understand whether our child is having a ‘normal’ amount of difficulty transitioning to school or if they are struggling enough that they might need extra help – and if so, what to do about it.   References Bergin, C., & Bergin, D. If you have a child with special needs such as autism, you may quickly start hearing about Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) and Verbal Behavior (VB) as therapies that are helpful to children. Today I talk with Dr. Denise Eckman president and executive director of Creative Behavior Interventions. We discuss an overview of what ABA is and which types of children, and even adults, benefit from this type of intervention. We go a little deep and by the end of this show, you will have a functional understanding of behaviors, their antecedents and a breakdown of different types of communication we find in language. In fact, if you listen carefully, you may be able to discuss Mands, Tacts, Intraverbal and Echoic communication!

Your Parenting Mojo - Respectful, research-based parenting ideas to help kids thrive

“I don’t want to play with you.” “You’re not my friend.” “We’re playing families.  If you want to play, you have to be the dog.” Seems like everyone can remember a time when something like this happened to them as a child, and how much it hurt.  Children still say these things to each other – and we see how much it hurts them, too.  When researchers ask them, every child can remember a time when they were excluded – yet no child ever reports being the excluder! One of my listeners recommended that I read the book You Can’t Say You Can’t Play, in which the author (who is a teacher) proposes and then introduces a rule that you can’t say “you can’t play.”  A few researchers (including Professor Jamie Ostrov, with whom we’ll talk today) have since tested the approach: does it work?  If not, what should we do instead? Since most of these situations occur in preschool and school, teacher Caren co-interviews Professor Ostrov with me: we have some great insights for teachers as well as lots of information for parents on how to support both children and teachers in navigating these difficult situations.   References Allen, S.S.
