KEY TAKEAWAYS:  [22:40] AI can be useful by using it to curate all the information that is at our fingertips that we waste so much time trying to sift through. If you can ask AI the right question, it can curate the information that you want to find online.   [28:32] Social media has benefits for a musician, one being that you can get your music out there affordably and it can be heard all around the world.  [37:25] For Britta, there is a big difference between singing in the studio and singing live for an audience. There is a feeling of being terrified, excited, vulnerable and exposed which gives her a big thrill.    RESOURCE LINKS:  LaunchLeft Podcast Smart Link Dean and Britta’s Links Dean and Britta's Website  Dean and Britta's Facebook  Dean and Britta's YouTube  Britta Phillips' Website  Dean Wareham's Website  Ryder The Eagle’s Links Ryder the Eagle Instagram  Ryder the Eagle Facebook  Ryder the Eagle Website  BIOGRAPHIES:  Dean and Britta BIO Dean & Britta are husband and wife team Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips, members of Luna. They have recorded several full-length albums and soundtracks. Their first two albums were produced by Tony Visconti (Bowie, T.Rex): L’Avventura in 2003 and Back Numbers in 2007. Their most recent release is the song “The Cloud is Coming,” which they wrote and performed for the Noah Baumbach film White Noise (they were also actors in the film). They live in Los Angeles. In addition to making records, Dean & Britta are active scoring films, notably Noah Baumbach’s The Squid & the Whale and Mistress America. They also composed songs and score for 13 Most Beautiful: Songs for Andy Warhol Screen Tests, a project commissioned by the Andy Warhol Museum, and continue to perform this multi-media show live in concert. Dean Wareham was the singer-songwriter-guitarist behind the Boston band Galaxie 500, who released three albums between 1987 and 1991. After this Dean went on to found NYC guitar band Luna, which released seven studio albums between 1992 and 2005.  Luna disbanded in 2005 but reunited in 2015 and continue to perform live. His most recent album (2021) is I Have Nothing to Say to the Mayor of L.A. Dean is also a published author — his memoir Black Postcards is a Penguin paperback. His most recent book — Hearing Voices — is a collection of selected lyrics, illustrated by artist Ed Templeton. Britta Phillips joined Luna on bass guitar in 1999, recording two albums with the band. She was formerly a member of the U.K. shoegaze band Belltower. She was also the singing voice of cartoon rocker Jem in the 1980s, and starred with Julia Roberts in Satisfaction, a film about an all-girl rock band. Britta released a solo album, Luck or Magic, in 2016.   Ryder the Eagle BIO My name is Ryder The Eagle. I was born under the sign of Cancer in the south of France and like the planets predicted, I dedicated the beginning of my life to finding true love. Two EPs, a marriage and a divorce later, I embarked on a "Follymoon", an incandescent kind of a honeymoon where loneliness meets the folly of freedom. I traveled across the USA on the Greyhound bus, lugging my microphone along sidewalks and crossings, diners, and traffic lights. I spent two years in London crafting my break-up songs and sang them all over the globe supporting Adam Green, Jonathan Bree, and a few others. I ended up in Mexico City, where I’m currently living. I’m driving an old Chevy Caprice which I don’t have insurance for. My trunk is full of memories from a past that I can’t let go. One day I went to this Scottish town called Plean, unloaded everything, and wrote nine songs about it. So if you ever need a ride, I’ve got room in the car now - and we can play my first album on the stereo. Can’t wait to meet you.

As you may know, Gen Z is defined as anyone born between 1997 and 2012, which means these are the people that are roughly 11 to 26 years of age now. As you give some thought to people you may know in this age group, I wonder what labels or judgments might you have? In his new book, What Would Gen-Z Do?: Everything You Don't Know About Gen-Z But Should, international award-winning author John Schlimm invites you to rethink everything.   Guest Bio A Harvard-trained educator, artist, advocate, and international award-winning author, John Schlimm was among the first to start piecing together the authentic and multifaceted face of Generation Z—beyond the stigmas, stereotypes, and often misguided media profiling of these dynamic young people, who remain largely misunderstood and vastly underestimated. During the past several years, John's extensive and revealing work and trusted relationship with Gen-Zers across the country has resulted in several thought-provoking essays—for Huffington Post, Harvard Ed. Magazine, and others—and his groundbreaking collaboration with The Andy Warhol Museum to create The Gen-Z Time Capsule, which is a participatory project helping Gen-Zers to further introduce themselves to the world—including to their own parents, teachers, community leaders, employers, and others—while also turning them into a bona fide work of Pop Art. In our surprise final finalé episode, we bring you the audio recording from the Artist Talk for the Border is a Weapon Exhibition, moderated by Jose Diaz - the former Chief Curator at the Andy Warhol Museum. It took place February 22, 2022 over zoom to an audience of about 50-60 people. All artists were present except Daniela Cavazos Madrgial and Tereneh Idia who were not available that evening. At that point the exhibition The Border is a Weapon, curated by Gil Rocha at 937 Gallery in Pittsburgh, PA had been open almost a month and had been seen by thousands including the opening night that was packed and overflowing with people. This conversation flowed easily between the artists and Jose Diaz. It serves now as an important historic document of a show that continues to grow and travel, most recently it was shown at the Laredo Center for the Arts, summer 2022, and will continue to the University of Syracuse later in 2023. In episode 219 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed reflecting on embracing experiences and life, empathy and context in photographic documentation, and protecting your legacy through your own actions. Plus this week, photographer Arne Svenson takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which he answer's the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?' Arne Svenson is a self-taught photographer with an educational and vocational background in special education, whose photographic practice aims to seek out the inner life, the essence, of his subjects, whether they be human, inanimate, or something in between. He says that he uses his camera as a reporter uses text, to create a narrative that facilitates the understanding of that which may lie hidden or obscured. In the years 2012-1016, Svenson was artist-in-residence at Wesley Spectrum High School, a program in Pittsburgh for children on the autism spectrum. In partnership with The Andy Warhol Museum and the Cognitive Psychology Department at the University of Victoria, BC, he was involved in a long-term project exploring the science of facial recognition skills with subjects on the spectrum. The resultant work was shown in its entirety at The Andy Warhol Museum. He is the author/photographer of numerous books, including Unspeaking Likeness, The Neighbors, Prisoners and Sock Monkeys and in 2016 he received the Nannen Prize in photojournalism for his project The Neighbors. Svenson's photographs have been shown extensively in the United States, Europe and Asia and are included in numerous public and private collections, including SFMOMA, Carnegie Museum of Art, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Museum of Fine Arts Boston and the Norton Museum of Art. His work has been profiled in the New York Times, Artforum, Art in America and The New Yorker, among other publications. Go Yinzers! We devote this episode to Pittsburgh, PA, a.k.a. Steel City Pennsylvania.  After Andrea's fab visit there in Spring 2022 we knew we had to deep dive into this fantastic place, with our usual Where In The World brain-teaser (clue: the answer is not Pittsburgh) and a departure lounge chat with the fact- and fun-filled Corrie from Walk The Burgh Tours.  Our Top 5 this episode is devoted to Only in Pittsburgh attractions - its 446 bridges; the Moonshot Museum; Wigle Whisky; the Andy Warhol Museum and the famous Primanti Bros. sandwiches. And we do all this while sipping on two of the city's famous libations, Engine House 25 wine and the aforementioned Wigle Whisky, because, well, who wouldn't?  We learn that Andrew Carnegie seems to have named many of Pittsburgh's attractions after himself (well, he did pay for them, after all) and we discover the fascinating Ulster-Scots / Scots-Irish history and language of the city, and wider Pennsylvania area in general.   Andrea also keeps up the TIYP podcast tradition of totally mis-pronouncing proper nouns and so, apologies the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers!  Thank you to everyone at Visit Pittsburgh - do visit them online to find out exactly why your next trip should be there: www.visitpittsburgh.com. And finally, thank you to all the Yinzers Andrea met on her trip - you are the friendliest, most helpful and fun bunch of people!   SUBSCRIBE to our podcast - it would absolutely make our day!  And please do follow us here: Instagram Twitter  Facebook Thanks, as always, to our good friends from the band 3D Shark, who provide our theme tune. If we plug them enough, we hope that one day they'll get into the charts and buy us a pint.  Thanks for listening!

This week, we join the Andy Warhol Museum at a property in Butler County that was once plagued by acid mine drainage, but now it's a paradise for migrating birds and art. We also talk with the author of a new bird guide that's for enthusiasts and beginners alike. Plus, a massive new proposal to build an LNG export plant along the Delaware faces environmental justice concerns.

You Are Beautiful and You Are Alone is a new biography of Nico, the mysterious singer best known for her work with the Velvet Underground and her solo album Chelsea Girl. Her life is tangled in myth--much of it of her own invention. Rock and roll cultural historian Jennifer Bickerdike delivers a definitive book that unravels the story while making a convincing case for Nico's enduring importance. Over the course of her career, Nico was an ever-evolving myth: art film house actress, highly coveted fashion model, Dietrich of Punk, Femme Fatale, Chelsea Girl, Garbo of Goth, The Last Bohemian, Heroin Junkie. Lester Bangs described her as 'a true enigma.' At age 27, Nico became Andy Warhol's newest Superstar, featured in his one commercial break out hit film Chelsea Girls and garnering the position of chanteuse for the Velvet Underground. It wasn't Nico's musical chops which got her the gig; it was her striking beauty. Her seeming otherworldly and unattainable presence was further amplified by her reputation for dating rock stars (Brian Jones, Bob Dylan, Jim Morrison, among others). She became famous for being Nico. Yet Nico's talent and her contribution to rock culture are often overlooked. She spent most of her career as a solo artist on the road, determined to make music, seemingly against all the odds, enduring empty concert halls, abusive fans, and the often perilous reality of being an aging artist and drug addict. She created mesmerizing and unique projects that inspired a generation of artists, including Henry Rollins, Morrissey, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Iggy Pop. Drawing on the archives at the Andy Warhol Museum and at Nico's record labels, various private collections, and rarely seen footage, and featuring exclusive new interviews from those who knew her best, including Iggy Pop and Danny Fields, and those inspired by her legacy, You Are Beautiful and You Are Alone reveals the complicated, often compromised, self-destructive and always headstrong woman behind the one-dimensional myths. Martin's interview with Jennifer Otter Bickerdike was recorded on October 5th, 2021.

He attempts to reconcile with his ex-girlfriend Marnie, despite her treating him poorly. Meanwhile, an attractive and successful woman named Molly McCleish, arrives at the terminal to board a flight. Kirk is the only TSA agent who does not flirt with or attempt to harass her, attracting Molly, especially after he saves her from his boss who makes unwanted advances on her. After boarding, she calls her cell phone accidentally left behind at security, Kirk answers it and arranges to return it the following evening, deepening the attraction.Kirk and his friend Devon arrive at the Andy Warhol Museum the following evening to return Molly's phone. While there, Kirk is wrongly accused of spilling a drink on the museum director and is asked to leave. Molly feels bad and offers Kirk tickets to a Pittsburgh Penguins hockey game. Kirk brings his friend, Stainer, to the game, where they meet Molly and her friend Patty. While Stainer and Molly are away from their seats, Patty tells Kirk that Molly is interested in him.Molly asks Kirk out a few days later and he agrees. Stainer predicts their relationship will fail, he refers to Molly as a "10", and Kirk as a "5", saying that is too big a difference. Patty meanwhile believes Molly has only chosen Kirk because he is "safe". While on their date, Kirk tells Molly that he dreams of becoming a pilot, while Molly shares her story of how she was once a lawyer before realizing her love for event planning. At the end of the night, they kiss in Kirk's car.Molly accompanies Kirk to a family lunch, where she charms the men and makes Marnie jealous. After returning to Molly's apartment, while making out, Kirk ejaculates prematurely in his pants and moments later Molly's parents arrive. Desperate to conceal the stain on his pants, Kirk seems discourteous by not standing up to shake hands and leaves quickly. Believing he fled to avoid meeting her parents, Molly ignores Kirk's calls. Kirk tracks her down and admits the true reasons for his leaving and she forgives him.At Molly's sister Katie's 21st birthday party, Kirk is troubled by Molly being intentionally vague about Kirk's line of work to her parents. Molly's ex-boyfriend Cam, a stunt pilot, then arrives and alludes to Molly having a physical defect. After the party, they return to Molly's apartment and partially undress. Kirk discovers Molly's "defect" is slightly webbed toes, which Kirk considers so minor that he decides that she is indeed too perfect for him. Upset with Kirk over his insecurities and wishing that there was something wrong with her to justify them being together, Molly confesses that Cam had the same problem. She admits she asked Kirk out because she considered him safe, causing Kirk to break up with her. Kirk resumes his relationship with Marnie and makes plans to attend a family vacation in Branson together.Later, Stainer asks an ex-girlfriend of his if he was good enough for her, she tells him that his insecurities caused her to end their relationship. Realizing he caused Kirk and Molly's break-up by telling Kirk that Molly was too good for him, Stainer phones Patty and gets her to bring Molly to the airport. Stainer tries to get Kirk off the plane he has boarded, but to no avail. He has Jack stop the plane, causing everyone to have to de-board. Kirk flees from Marnie, who chases after him, and Kirk breaks up with her in the process. Kirk meets Molly at the terminal gate, where she confesses Kirk's insecurities about himself are justified, but that she wants to be with him regardless. They reconcile and resume their relationship. In the ending credits, Kirk surprises Molly with a mystery trip to Cleveland via small aircraft, as he has fulfilled his dream of becoming a pilot

Ep. 15 - Kim Gordon “Is Art Really All Design Now?”   Very happy to bring you another interview in a different kitchen - this time, the mighty Kim Gordon's (kitchen) (and interview)! I fairly idolized Kim for her presence in Sonic Youth, but I see her more now as an inspiration in how to live a creative life when life keeps getting longer.  I was privileged to attend the opening of her Wreaths show in LA a couple of years ago, not long after Aimee and I were lucky to catch an early live set of Body/Head, right around the time Kim was beginning to write her BOOK, etc., etc., you get the picture.  And I have trouble sticking to a podcast schedule. Anyway, Kim's a legend for good reason, and I thank her for sitting down with us and I'm glad we DIDN'T talk a ton about music, but more about life and her return to her first love, the visual arts. Some links:   An example of the wreath art (that you can *purchase*) on Artsy.com: “Wreath Painting Northampton Blue” 2011   An article in the Pittsburgh City Paper about the Warhol museum exhibit, which, in classic timing for this podcast, as of the moment I'm writing this, literally closed two days ago: “Kim Gordon's Lo-Fi Glamour exhibit at The Andy Warhol Museum is bold, crude, and dangerous”   Great footage of early-ish Sonic Youth (1983), live in Poitiers, Fr., with Kim on vocals.   Letterman performance of “Bull in the Heather”    Free Kitten's “What's Fair” live at CB's in 1994    Body/Head live & P'fork interview, St. Vitus, NYC 2013 (This is the show Aimee and I happened to be at, coincidentally)   And one of my all-time favorite's of Kim's, “Shadow of a Doubt”   Find us: @KimletGordon  @AimeeMann @TedLeo @artofprocesspod @MaxFunHQ
