Having hired Martha, Barty discussed funeral arrangements for the fallen officers, instructed Val to begin therapy with Martha, and offered to accompany Everett to see his parents. Martha set out with Val, but when Val provided only a superficial tour of the town, Martha pressed her to share the emotional impact of recent events. Everett revealed his vampire nature to his parents, and they took it surprisingly well, but can Everett prevent his father from ghouling himself joining the department? 2025 Jun 22 SUN: THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST S Gn 14: 18-20/ Ps 110: 1. 2. 3. 4/ 1 Cor 11: 23-26/ Optional Sequence Lauda, Sion/ Lk 9: 11b-17 This solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ was instituted in the 13th century. There were people at that time who said, "There needs to be a celebration of the Holy Eucharist which is apart from Holy Thursday." Apparently they had the idea that celebrating the Eucharist on Holy Thursday, the day it was instituted, made things too somber because Jesus' betrayal and arrest and condemnation and crucifixion immediately followed. Well, I don't think that we can separate the mystery of the Holy Eucharist from those events because Jesus was instituting the Eucharist so that, as Saint Paul says today, we can proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes again. So we have from Saint Paul this most ancient account of what the earliest Christians did right away after the resurrection and after Pentecost, after the Pentecost event: they gathered together to celebrate the Lord's Supper. We also have today this very brief passage from the book of Genesis. There is a concept in Scripture study and it's called typology. In other words, when we examine the Old Testament we can discover things that seem to point to persons and things that happen in the New Testament; and probably the strongest example of typology is Melchizedek. We have to think about this figure who very quickly appears and then just as quickly disappears. He is described as the King of Salem or Jerusalem, so he can [also] be understood as king of righteousness.* That's what we get out of Melchizedek or from the name of Salem, Jerusalem, a king of peace, Shalom. He is described as the king of Salem or Jerusalem and this is more than a thousand years before David claimed Jerusalem as his city. We don't know the origins of Melchizedek and we don't know where he goes after this incident recorded for us in the 14th chapter of Genesis; and he offers bread and wine. So this is a very powerful image of Jesus himself, king of righteousness, king of peace, eternal high priest. These are the many things that we find in Melchizedek which point to Jesus himself. So then we come to the Gospel, and I believe that every one of us is always conscious of our need for food such that we will not wander out somewhere where we can't eat or drink. But this is exactly what the people following Jesus did, and I think that this is an indication to us that the people who were following Jesus were well aware of a hunger that went much deeper than the hunger for physical food. They considered all the woes and griefs of their life and they said, "I am in fact hungry for something deeper. I am hungry for my life to make sense and especially for interactions among people to make sense." And so we have this incident recorded. This is actually one of many in the four gospels of Jesus multiplying food. And we see that it is saying, "Yes, we have the deepest needs and hungers of them all. We hunger for life to make sense, for our relationships to make sense, and we find the fullness of sense, of peace, and of love." As Jesus says, "I will not simply feed you with loaves and fishes. I will feed you with myself." *The "tzedek" of his name refers to righteousness.

St. Hildegard of Bingen, 12th-century abbess, mystic, polymath, and Doctor of the Church, is best known to non-Catholics for something else – her music. We have more pieces of music by Hildegard than by any other medieval composer whose name we know. Her chants are beautiful, otherworldly, virtuosic and ahead of their time. Some of them were written for her morality play, the Ordo virtutum, which is also the first of its kind. Musicologist Margot Fassler joins the podcast to discuss what makes St. Hildegard's music so special. This episode is a crossover with Way of the Fathers, where Dr. Jim Papandrea has done two episodes introducing St. Hildegard's life and writings. As the group continues to traverse and make their way through the dungeon, they come upon a room with a table and several steins of ale laid across it. Chantico, Dona, and Urusus are suddenly compelled to go and have a drink. Before they all make their way to do so, the rest of the party members, understanding something is amiss, do their best to wake their party members up and out of their current conditions. Dona and Chan do come to, but Ursus has a more difficult time than the women as he continues to reach for this ale. Dona and Thorak do everything to smash and destroy these temptations, but to no avail, as they magically reappear on the table and refill. When Ursus finally does take a sip of ale, he says it's the best ale he's ever had, which takes their drunk monk by surprise and makes him feel a little hurt. Upon completing his drink, the vessel was refilled and grew in size. Ursus, realizing somewhat that the party wanted to leave but was compelled to stay, lifts the giant stein glass and attempts to carry it back with him towards the exit. Which doesn't work, and a now flustered party is doing anything and everything to get one half of the Slash Brothers back to his right mind. Finally, the shifter gets his wits about him and resists the urge to keep this glass. As they venture further, they find themselves in a room made of obsidian. There is a table set for one with a book placed on top of it. As Valen goes to investigate the book and gets closer, the book flutters open with a breeze that came from nowhere. The group hears a raspy voice that begins to speak to them incorporeally. A riddle that left the group stumped for some time. They start trying to read the book and investigate it and its surroundings further, until Chantico begins to think about it more and realizes the answer is “skeletons.” As she says it out loud, the group starts to fight. After this fight, the voice reappears and begins to speak a new riddle to the group. Following the logic that this is all tied to necromancy, Valen says “zombie, probably,” which is the correct answer, and zombies then appear, triggering yet another fight. After successfully slaying the zombies, the group picks up on the notion that there are no other gimmicks other than answering the riddle, and the said creature appears for them to fight. With that information, they prepare for the voice's riddle once again. While still in wildshape as a giant hyena with a flaming mohawk, Chantico realizes the answer, but also that the group wouldn't be able to understand her. Hence, she takes some of the mess from the zombies to write out “wight,” to which Ursus replies, “A wight? What the fuck is that?” triggering the answer and the inevitable fight. They engage in another skirmish and emerge victorious. As they regain their bearings, the voice speaks to them once again. It's Dona who says the answer, which is a “lich.” Upon her saying that, the doors to the room reappear, the book and table setting disappear, and the group realizes the trial is done, but they also question if the King in Yellow is a Lich. With some discussion, they begin to realize they need to rest, and they decide that this is the best course of action before proceeding further, as well as preparing for the unknown that's yet to come. June 28, 2025 Today's Reading: Introit for Pentecost 3 - Psalm 85:8-10, 13; antiphon: Psalm 85:7Daily Lectionary: Joshua 3:1-17; Acts 9:1-22“Show us your steadfast love, O Lord, and grant us your salvation.” (Psalm 85:7)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. When God feels far away, how would you pray to Him? What do I do when God is angry with me?The sons of Korah ask these questions of God in Psalm 85.Israel has endured the exile, and no one wants to endure that again. The future looks unclear, and history shows that for Israel the days of David and Solomon were not coming back. Life can be equally as anxious for us. Times have changed. Friendships come and go. Relationships end. Opportunities we hoped for never turn out, and life never seems to slow down. It can seem like we never quite have a handle on things. The life of the Psalmist and for the people of Israel was not about getting the upper hand. It certainly was not about going back to how things used to be, no matter how grand they appeared. We often romanticize the past and hold on to nostalgia. Those days aren't coming back, though. The life of the Psalmist is knowing where our peace and salvation come from. It comes from God Himself. Israel was passed around like a nobody to the nations. It wasn't that they didn't deserve it; it was that they did, and God heard their cries, remembered His promises, and brought them back. You may be mourning a loved one, unsure of where to go next in life, or suffering from illness in the mind and body. When you reach the edge where doubt is near, and God feels far away, remember what the sons of Korah demanded of God. “Show us your steadfast love, O Lord, and grant us your salvation.”You have a God who loves you and sent His Son to die for you. Whose word tells you the steadfast love God has for you through our Lord Jesus. In Jesus, your salvation is near—it is yours. It's not a matter of what I have to do to earn it, but a matter of your sins being forgiven. Nothing will take you away from the love your Father has for you. Not political uncertainties, not momentary crises of life, not sickness, and not death.God's salvation is revealed to you in your crucified, risen, and ascended Lord Jesus. You have your Baptism to remind you of that day you were made a child of God—united to your Savior so that as you endure these final things in these last days, you find comfort in the Word, knowing your identity is sealed in the water. You are strengthened in the eating and drinking of His Body and Blood under the bread and wine. Come, Lord Jesus. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. All glory to the One Who lavishes such love; The triune God in love Assures our life above. His means of grace for us Are gifts He loves to give; All thanks and praise for His Great love by which we live! I apologize for getting this week's “Thriller Thursday” posted on Friday! I thought I had plenty of time to narrate and produce this, but the more I got into it, the more elaborate it became and the time just got away from me. Hopefully it'll be worth your wait! – DarrenLeroy Johnston thought the worst part of his cruise would be the uncomfortable tuxedo on formal night — until a crimson storm hurled their ship into waters where the rules of reality no longer apply.Join the DARKNESS SYNDICATE: https://weirddarkness.com/syndicateComing up in this episode… it's #ThrillerThursday, with a tale by one of my favorite Creepypasta authors, Mark Lynch. It's entitled, “I am stranded on a desert island far from home. Please send help.” In the story, when Leroy Johnston embarks on what should be a routine ocean cruise, he's simply looking forward to a relaxing vacation and reconnecting with an old friend. But after a devastating storm strikes their ship, the passengers and crew find themselves completely cut off from the outside world, drifting in waters that seem to follow none of the familiar rules. As their situation grows increasingly desperate and the veneer of civilization begins to crack, Leroy must confront terrors beyond imagination while fighting to protect the woman he's just met and come to love. Dog whistle think pieces seem to be back in fashion and right wingers are more frequently using rhetoric that sounds a bit like Enoch Powell. Powell was condemned for Rivers of Blood, why isn't sounding like him so damaging for the modern right? Plus – AI and copyright. It's put Labour at odds with Elton John, never a good place to be. Liverpool's modern history is one of struggle, adversity and community and today we hear from David Swift, author of Scouse Republic: An alternative history of Liverpool. In the 1980s the city was in deep economic decline from its Victorian heyday as one of the world's busiest ports. Liverpool's radical identity was forged by the ideological battles of the decade and from the predations of Margaret Thatcher's Tory government and its supporters in the press, namely the Sun Newspaper. *****STOP PRESS*****I only ever talk about history on this podcast but I also have another life, yes, that of aspirant fantasy author and if that's your thing you can get a copy of my debut novel The Blood of Tharta, right here:Help the podcast to continue bringing you history each weekIf you enjoy the Explaining History podcast and its many years of content and would like to help the show continue, please consider supporting it in the following ways:If you want to go ad-free, you can take out a membership hereOrYou can support the podcast via Patreon hereOr you can just say some nice things about it here Hosted on Acast. On this episode, we're presenting two of our favorite stories: Silvia's Blood was originally released in 2014, and is based on a short story by Philip K. Dick titled, "Upon the Dull Earth." Moon Graffiti was the first episode of our show, which began in 2012. It was inspired by a speech written for Richard Nixon by William Safire titled, "In Event of Moon Disaster." We're in the middle of a fundraising campaign to bring the show back in October. We have all new merch for sale, and for a limited time, we're taking pre-orders for a vinyl pressing of Silvia's Blood and Moon Graffiti. To see what we have to offer, go to: https://certifiedcrucial.com/truthshop We're now taking pre-orders through June 30. The album cost is $40, and all of the profits will go to making a new season of The Truth. And if you don't have $40, we're also selling buttons, stickers, and a brand new t-shirt design based on our logo. So if you love our stories and want to hear more, help us make a brand new season by pre-ordering your very own vinyl pressing of Silvia's Blood and Moon Graffiti right now. We're also taking donations, every little bit helps. Thank you so much! What if your blood pressure — even just a little too high — is quietly damaging your brain? What if it's increasing your risk of a heart attack or stroke, without you ever feeling a thing? In this episode, Professor Tim Spector reveals why blood pressure is one of the most overlooked – and most dangerous – health issues today. He explains why “normal for your age” might not be safe at all, why medication alone isn't the full answer, and how small, daily changes could dramatically reduce your risk of serious disease. Can your gut microbes raise your blood pressure? Can a banana be as powerful as a pill? Is beetroot juice really three times more effective than cutting salt? You'll also learn why 80% of the salt we eat isn't from the shaker, how stress and sleep secretly push your pressure up, and what most doctors still miss when treating hypertension. If you've ever been told your blood pressure's “fine” — or never measured it at all — this episode might change the way you think about your future health.
Read OnlineBut when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs, but one soldier thrust his lance into his side, and immediately blood and water flowed out. John 19:33–34John's Gospel is filled with deep spiritual imagery and symbolism. It is clear that this imagery and symbolism was divinely inspired so as to give us spiritual food for reflection and meditation. One such image is given to us today as we celebrate the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. As Jesus and the two criminals on either side of Him hung upon their crosses, the soldiers came to hasten their deaths by breaking their legs to cause them to more quickly suffocate. But when they came to Jesus, He had already died. So one of the soldiers, traditionally known as Longinus, thrust his spear into Jesus' side, and blood and water flowed forth. Some traditions identify Longinus with the centurion who cried out after Jesus' death, “Truly, this was the Son of God!” (See Matthew 27:54.) Other traditions state that he converted at that moment, making him the first convert to Christianity. And still other traditions state that Longinus could not see well, and the blood and water from Jesus' side poured upon his eyes, healing him. Regardless of whether these traditions are true, we know that Jesus' side was pierced and blood and water flowed forth. The symbolism of this act was more than a mere human symbol. It was an instrument of the profound spiritual reality that was taking place at that moment. As Jesus' Sacred Heart was pierced, the blood and water that poured forth was the new sacramental life of the Church. The Blood was the Most Holy Eucharist and the Water was the gift of Baptism. And when Jesus had previously “breathed His last” and “handed over His Spirit,” the Sacrament of Confirmation was bestowed. When we celebrate those Sacraments today, it is easy to see them as mere symbols of what we partake in. But in our Christian Tradition, the Sacraments are so much more. The symbol is also the reality. It is the instrument of what it symbolizes. Therefore, every time we witness a Baptism or partake in the Holy Eucharist, we are mystically present with Longinus, receiving the grace and mercy of our redemption, pouring forth from Jesus' wounded side, so as to heal us and make us whole. The human heart is, physically speaking, a bodily organ responsible for pumping blood throughout. But from a spiritual perspective, given that we are both body and soul, the human heart is also the source of our life. Without it, we physically and spiritually die. So it is with the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It was not only a physical heart that was physically pierced by the lance long ago. It is now also the source of our ongoing spiritual life, and, without Jesus' Sacred Heart of Mercy, we will die in our sins.Reflect, today, upon the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. See His Heart as the ongoing source of your new life in grace. Understand that His Heart is more than a symbol of His grace and mercy, it is the spiritual source and the font of that mercy. Prayerfully place yourself before His Cross, this day, and allow the blood and water, flowing from His wounded side, to cover you so that you, too, may believe. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, You poured out upon the world the love and mercy of Your transforming grace through the instrument of the blood and water pouring forth from Your wounded side. Help me to gaze upon this font of mercy and to be covered with it through the gift of the Sacraments. May I always be open to all that You wish to bestow upon me by these precious and transforming instruments of Your love. Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us. Can Catholics name their Guardian Angels? Will receiving both the Body and Blood of Christ return as a regular practice? In this episode of Catholic Answers Live, we dive into intriguing theological and scriptural questions. Learn the difference between hermeneutics and exegesis, the Church's view on the gift of tongues, and whether drone technology could ever be used to deliver the Eucharist. We also explore Jesus' question to Peter—“Do you love me more than these?”—and what it reveals about love and leadership among the apostles. Finally, we address the idea that the elect are always a remnant and what that means for salvation. Join The CA Live Club Newsletter: Click Here Invite our apologists to speak at your parish! Beginning to Pray: "The Last Retreat - Day 12 " - “God has said: “Be holy, for I am holy.” 31. This is Christ's work in every soul of good185 will and it is the work that His immense love, His “exceeding love,” 186 is eager to do in me. He wants to be my peace so that nothing can distract me or draw me out of “the invincible fortress of holy recolletion.” 187 It is there that He will give me “access to the Father” and will keep me as still and as peaceful in His presence as if my soul were already in eternity. 188 It is by the Blood of His Cross that He will make peace in my little heaven, so that it may truly be the repose of the Three. He will fill me with Himself; He will bury me with Him; He will make me live again with Him, by His life: “Mihi vivere Christus est!” 189 And if I fall at every moment, 190 in a wholly confident faith I will be helped up by Him. I know that He will forgive me, that He will cancel out everything with a jealous care, and even more, He will “despoil” me, He will “free” 191 me from all my miseries, from everything that is an obstacle to the divine action. “He will lead away all my powers,” 192 making them His captives, triumphing over them in Himself. Then I will have wholly passed into Him and can say: “I no longer live. My Master lives in me!” 193 And I will be “holy, pure, without reproach” in the Father's eyes.
