Kim Wiggins is a world-renowned painter from New Mexico, and one of the most recognizable artists working in the American West today. His bold, swirling canvases have made him one of the leading artistic voices of what's come to be called the New West. His work hangs in the Autry, the Booth, and the American Museum of Western Art in Denver, and this past year he won Best in Show at the Prix de West, the most prestigious award in Western art, becoming the first modernist ever to take it home. Kim comes by all of this honestly. Both sides of his family came west in covered wagons in the late 1800s and settled into ranching along the Pecos River. His mother was running two ranches and a nightclub in Arizona by her mid-twenties; his father was a photojournalist for Life and Sports Illustrated, and a bush pilot who once had to sprint back to his plane in the Amazon and count the arrows in the side of the fuselage. Kim grew up surrounded by creativity– Thomas Hart Benton paged through his sketchbook and he ate lunch with Georgia O'Keeffe at Ghost Ranch. He began focusing seriously on painting while stationed in Europe with the military and soon became the youngest member of the Society of American Impressionists — a career most artists would give an arm for, and one he walked away from completely. We talk about why he walked away, which starts with a moment at a show in St. Louis when he spotted one of his paintings across the room, hurried over, and discovered it wasn't his. We cover the lean years that followed, including knocking on doors in Lubbock in the summer heat with a car full of paintings. And we get into the ideas behind the work: why a loss of innovation is the death knell of a civilization, why he watches children in galleries instead of collectors, the paintings he made for the NAACP after his son asked him a question he couldn't answer, and his conviction that a gift, by definition, belongs to someone else. I first met Kim back in 2022 at Maxwell Alexander Gallery's ten-year show, where he was on a panel I moderated, and I've wanted a longer conversation ever since. Ramón Mercader expected to easily kill Leon Trotsky, silently and instantly. He had rehearsed the blow for months, practiced the angle, tailored a pocket into his raincoat to conceal the shortened ice axe. On August 20, 1940, he stood behind Trotsky -- who was the principle leader of the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution in Russian but exiled by Stalin after losing a power struggle -- in the study of his fortified villa in Coyoacán, Mexico, raised the weapon, and shut his eyes as the blade fell. What followed was not silence but a scream so raw that it froze the room. Trotsky did not collapse. He rose from his chair, seized the assassin's wrist, bit down on his hand, and forced the weapon loose. Blood streaming down his face, he stumbled into the dining room and gave his final order: "He must not be killed. He must be made to talk." He died twenty-six hours later. Thirty years after that, on his own deathbed, Mercader told his wife: "Trotsky is waiting for me on the other side. And he is still screaming." Today's guests are H. Keith Melton and Nigel West, authors of The Assassination of Leon Trotsky: Espionage, Scandal, and the Crime of the Century, the product of fifty years of investigation that took the authors to Moscow, into declassified Soviet intelligence files, and into the homes of the operatives' families. We discuss how Stalin's campaign against Trotsky was not a single plot but a global war of extermination that destroyed his entire family before it destroyed him, how a GPU mole named Sylvia Callen served as the personal secretary to the head of the American Trotskyist movement for nine years without detection, and how the first assassination attempt sprayed over three hundred rounds into Trotsky's bedroom and somehow failed to kill anyone. We look at how the assassin's convent-educated mother directed the backup plot that succeeded, why Ramón Mercader maintained his false identity inside a Mexican prison for a decade despite relentless interrogation, and how new medical evidence suggests Trotsky might have survived the attack if his doctors had operated differently. The 2006 Tour was considered to be the last "monster" run of Pearl Jam's career with over 80 performances marked in a full calendar year. One of their most memorable runs took place in September in the heart of their European tour as they spent five shows touring historic locations in Italy. The run was so momentous that it received a concert movie directed by famed music photographer, Danny Clinch, called Immagine In Cornice that documented performances in Verona, Milan, Torino and Pistoia. This episode features coverage of the Verona show from the historic coliseum that they played back in 2000. The documentary gives ample time to provide stories of the venue and it's history dating back to 30 AD, and puts emphasis on the importance of Pearl Jam playing there. When the band took the stage, a hard rain fell from the skies making a song that's already very spiritual in Release feel monumental in the environment, especially in the storm. What followed was exactly what you'd expect from a 2006 show - big time anthems played at blistering speeds. Songs like Do The Evolution, Grievance, Corduroy, World Wide Suicide, Blood and Rockin' In The Free World are some of the best examples of that treatment, but you can't have a 2006 show without the legendary Even Flow performances with a massive drum solo from Matt Cameron. We'll talk about the film and our favorite memories from it as well as a gauge of the fans preferences as we compared the fast paced 2006 sets to the performances from other eras that feature more of a groove. Did anyone actually investigate Patrick Clancy? That question runs under half the comments on this channel, and the Lindsay Clancy trial already answered it under oath.State Police Det. Sgt. Andrew Chiachio testified that he mapped the route Patrick drove the night of Jan. 24, 2023, pulled surveillance from the Kingston CVS and the ThreeV restaurant, and interviewed witnesses including Lindsay's mother. The CVS footage shows Patrick walking in at 5:32 p.m. The restaurant footage shows him picking up the order at 5:54. A Cellebrite expert testified Lindsay's phone placed a 14-second call to Patrick between those two clips. He was two miles away with a receipt.Then there's the New Yorker theory: that Patrick left the country in February 2023 and that proves something. The magazine did report solo trips to Latin America and Europe before he sold the Duxbury house. No February date appears in that reporting that I can find. He wasn't a suspect, he wasn't charged, and he came back to Massachusetts to testify for the prosecution for two days.Another commenter asks a fair question: if Lindsay was psychotic, can her admission even be trusted? Her admission isn't one statement. It's the 911 call, her lawyer's opening, a hospital phone call to Patrick that Patrick testified about, dozens of evaluations, and a formal stipulation in court to the DNA on the bands.This segment works through five comments and puts the testimony next to each one. Wendig is here!! The man my wife refers to as “Chuck Apples” (as opposed to “Chuck Fight Club) is back to talk about his most fun, yet nastiest book to date. The Calamities is what would happen if The Godfather had cenobites, if Logan Roy had made a pact with monsters, it prompts me to ask the questions “who's your favourite demon Chuck?”   That kinda book.   Chuck tells us how the study of demonology has underpinned almost his entire writing career. We discuss the increasingly tight links between his novels, the influence of D&D structure, and the challenge of making the reader care about some of the worst-behaved characters in the world.   And I drop the C-bomb for the first time on air. The fatal flight caused a global transformation in airline safety, but the thing people remember the most is the ghosts that people began to see after the airline recycled some of the parts from the crash and used them in other planes in the fleet. The next stop on our unrelated haunts tour will take us to Hales Bar Dam on the Tennessee River near Chattanooga.
