Circle of Parks Podcast: Talking all things Walt Disney World
Disney's Epcot offers countless dining options, but is Connections Eatery worth your precious park time and dining credits? We're pulling up a chair to give you the unfiltered scoop straight from our family's lunch table.Navigating the bustling atmosphere of this World Celebration eatery at 2pm (still surprisingly packed!), we put Disney's Quick Service Dining Plan to the test with a variety of menu items. The hand-breaded chicken sandwich delivered solid flavor without excessive breading, though the accompanying black garlic truffle fries proved divisive—enjoyable in small doses but overwhelming as a full side. Meanwhile, the Flower and Garden Festival's hot honey chicken sandwich hit the perfect balance of heat and sweetness, complemented wonderfully by pickles for a contrasting crunch. The real star? Connections' pizza. With gigantic slices that practically count as double portions, the $11.29 cheese pizza stands as one of Epcot's best quick-service values. Our family debate about sauce levels (some wanting more, others preferring the lighter approach) highlights how this adaptable menu caters to different palates. All these options—plus alcoholic beverages like Oregon's Rainstorm Pinot Noir Rosé—were completely covered by our Quick Service Dining Plan credits.Beyond food, we share our refreshingly laid-back approach to park touring. Arriving during Early Entry without the rope-drop rush, we walked straight onto Soarin', Figment, and Nemo before experiencing the "big party" atmosphere of Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind. This relaxed strategy sparked fascinating family discussions about park touring philosophies—are you Team Rope Drop or Team Take-It-Easy?Ready to plan your perfect Epcot day? The Epcot International Festival of the Arts gives us an opportunity to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Disney on Broadway. We'll look at the history of this amazing theatrical portfolio, which began with a "Tale as Old as Time" whose roots were more than 30 years ago at what was then Disney-MGM Studios. Today there are over two dozen major shows that have played on Broadway, The West End, and across the globe. I'll share with you some of my favorites and why--along with some stories you may not have heard about these phenomenal shows. And we'll step over to Epcot to talk about a new exhibit that has just opened up at CommuniCore in World Celebration. It's just one component of a very popular time of year in this park. Join us as we celebrate 30 years of Disney on Broadway at Epcot's International Festival of the Arts. ________________________________________________________ More Disney Insights can be found below! Welcome to our Reimagining series where we decide what attractions we're going to Keep, Demolish, or Reimagine - randomly. Since we have already wrapped up things over at the Magic Kingdom, we are now heading to EPCOT. And the first land (or neighborhood) is a doozie.Have you ever been at the parks at Walt Disney World and thought to yourself "I really like this ride, but I wish it had THIS instead", or "I really don't care for this attraction; I wish it was something COOLER." EPCOT is just about to complete a multiyear transformation, concluding on June 10 as the final walls of World Celebration come down to reveal CommuniCore Hall and CommuniCore Plaza. With the addition of Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Journey of Water Inspired by Moana, Connections Cafe, Connections Eatery, Creations Shop, Remy's Ratatouille Adventure, the Walt Disney "Walt The Dreamer" statue, and a revitalized World Celebration at the center of the front of the park, EPCOT looks transformed from a decade ago and continues to evolve from its opening day. In this episode, we chat live from World Celebration to reflect on EPCOT as it has been transformed from its early days to today, discussing our earliest memories from the 1980s and 1990s, our recent memories from the 2000s, and our thoughts on the 2024 experience at the park. The ghost appears through a cobalt blue glass-paned door. If you appreciate Disney detail, pay attention to the muddy footprints that mark the Hatbox Ghost's path as he arranges his cart of hatboxes and luggage. The scene is lit by the "moon" and the warm glow of a dim lantern and you will come face-to-face with the Hatbox Ghost from your doom buggy, as he entertains you with his trademark trick of displacing his head from his shoulders to hit hatbox. To create the perfect ambiance, Disney Imagineers tinkered with the Haunted Mansion lighting and paint both in the queue and inside the mansion. While the implementation of the Hatbox Ghost in the Magic Kingdom Haunted Mansion isn't quite how it was described at D23 (which is becoming an unfortunate trend), it is still a nice addition to the mansion. -- Walt the Dreamer Statue Unveiled at World Celebration GardensIn celebration of Walt Disney's birthday on December 5, EPCOT opened Dreamers Point in the new World Celebration neighborhood. The area features a brand new statue called "Walt the Dreamer," which will become an instant trademark photo spot. The statue was modelled after Walt Disney as he appeared later in life, specifically around the time when he was dreaming up the overall Florida Project and the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. This is a nice and thoughtful touch. This new Walt Disney statues is one of many areas to visit within World Celebration Gardens. where guests will be able to relax, unwind, and connect — to EPCOT, to nature and to each other. Each of the gardens connect back to the areas surrounding them, drawing on the original circular hub design plans for EPCOT. Some say it is a confusing and congested design, while others applaud the oasis of shade that will increase as the foliage grows (something that EPCOT desperately needs).--Thank You for Listening to the Disney Travel PodcastThank you very much for listening to this episode, Amelia and I hope that you enjoyed it. There's a lot of hype following the big announcements at this year's Destination D23 Event at Walt Disney World. But what many have missed is that several things have changed since last year's big announcements. So what's real, what can be trusted and what's as clear as mud for the future of Walt Disney World? The Big News for Disney Parks from Destination D23 We learned as much from what was said as we did from what was not said. What's Coming to Disney's Magic Kingdom Park Hatbox Ghost will be back at the Haunted Mansion in November, but not in the way you may think. He will appear "wherever and whenever he pleases," implying that you may or may not see him on the ride and likely not in the same place each time. Country Bear Jamboree is changing, this time significantly. An all-new show is coming, complete with a whole new act and new songs. The new show will be modeled after the musical revues of Nashville, featuring some of your favorite country bears singing popular Disney hits in a variety of country music styles, including pop country, bluegrass, rockabilly and more. Disney offered a sneak peak by showing the recording session for Bear Necessities, which will be in the new show. Pirates of the Caribbean is getting new ambiance with the addition of a new tavern near the ride. Remember the Barker Bird who used to chat will guests at the entrance of Pirates of the Caribbean? He will be back and living at the new tavern, chatting it up with guests. Big questions are will this be a reimagining of Tortuga Tavern and will they be selling alcohol? What's Coming to EPCOT We know that Moana's Journey of Water is opening on October 16 (including a new location for the Moana meet and greet), but we now know that all of World Celebration will open in December. Yes, the walls are finally coming down. Bigger news is that Test Track will be undergoing another complete overhaul and update (still with Chevrolet). No dates as to when it will close and for how long, but it is time for a refresh so this is welcome news. Disney promises the new Test Track will include the best elements from the original version along with new updates that point to a future world for vehicles. World Showcase Lagoon will be getting a new nighttime show entitled Luminous: The Symphony of Us. It will debut on December 5. What Will the Future Hold for Walt Disney World Parks? It got interesting here as they teased new information, but in some cases said less than they said last year. Here's what we know. Beyond Big Thunder Mountain at Magic Kingdom still appears to be happening, but they did not mention villains or anything else specifically. It still sounds like a new land with significant size and scale and it will include attractions, restaurants, shows and more. They did say that Dinoland at Disney's Animal Kingdom Park will be reimagined into a new land themed as the tropical Americas (geographically the space between North and South America). This land will land be Encanto themed, which removes Encanto from Beyond Big Thunder, as was hinted at last year. So Encanto Moves from Magic Kingdom to Animal Kingdom. Plus, an Indiana Jones area is likely coming to Animal Kingdom, potentially where Rafiki's Planet Watch is currently located. Finally, It's Tough to be a Bug in the Tree of Life is being reimagined as a Zootopia themed attraction/show. Disney Cruise Line The seventh ship will be called the Disney Adventure. The new island stop in the Bahamas on Eleuthera will be called Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.--Thank You for Listening to the Disney Travel PodcastThank you very much for listening to this episode, Amelia and I hope that you enjoyed it. Everything New for Disney Parks and Resorts from D23 Expo 2022 So What's Next for Disney Parks? You won't believe what's coming behind Big Thunder Mountain at Walt Disney World This is Disney's Blue Sky sneak peak of what's coming down the road for Disney Parks. This portion of the D23 Expo had the biggest cheer of anything announced in 2022.First though, Josh D'Amaro announced what's happening with Dinoland at Disney's Animal Kingdom Park. It has been languishing and looks forgotten so the announcement of a big transformation coming was welcome. Zootopia and Moana will share the space currently occupied by Dinoland. But the biggest news of all... Disney Villains are Finally Getting a Place to Call their OwnMagic Kingdom will feature new frontiers and it's all hiding on the other side of BTM. The little town of Santa Cecilia will come to life as Coco gets a Magic Kingdom presence. And if you do want to talk about Bruno, you're in luck because you may be able to walk right into the Madrigal's casita. But all is not fun and flowers in this new land...as what if the Disney villains took up residence there as well...beyond Big Thunder Mountain. This was presented as conceptual and would likely be 10 years down the road, but Disney would not share it in this way if it weren't going to happen. Big news for Walt Disney World and Magic Kingdom. -- There's More Coming to Walt Disney WorldA new nighttime show for EPCOT will debut in late 2023 to kick-off the 100th Anniversary of the Walt Disney Company. Moana's Journey of Water and the rest of the World Celebration area at EPCOT will open in late 2023. So we'll have to bear with those construction walls for another year it seems.Figment is returning in a brand new form for a meet and greet at EPCOT. That will be in place by the end of 2023. In Magic Kingdom, the perennial favorite Hatbox Ghost will materialize once again in the Haunted Mansion. And we now know that Tron Lightcycle Run at Magic Kingdom will debut in Spring 2023. We were hoping it would be sooner, but apparently they are working on finishing touches right now. No specific date, just "spring." Finally, in 2023, a new version of Happily Ever After will return as part of a new Magic Kingdom nighttime show. This received a good amount of applause. What's New and Coming to Disneyland Resort The DVC Villas at Disneyland Hotel will be called the Villas at Disneyland Hotel. How creative. On October 16, 2023 Disney 100 kicks-off and it promises to be the biggest celebration ever for Disney. Under the theme of a Boundless Future the following announcements were made: The Mandalorian and Grogu (aka Baby Yoda) will be onsite starting in Mid November 2022 at Disneyland Galaxy's Edge Over at the Avengers Campus in Disney California Adventure Park, Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, noted "we're just getting started." A new giant Hulk will be at Avengers Campus in California "next week." Plus, they're bringing the Multiverse to Avengers Campus. Disney is expanding the campus to include a new attraction. In the new attraction you will battle alongside all the Avengers against all the foes from anywhere. You will fight King Thanos. This is a new Thanos -- a Thanos who won. And the Avengers are not too happy about that and you have to help them. More news to come. Also new to Disney California Adventure, they are reimagining Pacific Wharf into San Fransokyo from Big Hero Six. You'll be able to meet Baymax there. Finally, they are reimagining Paradise Pier Hotel, as it will become Pixar Place Hotel. It will feature a Finding Nemo splash pad and more characters. All in all, Disney promises that the hotel will feel completely new. Over at Downtown Disney more than a dozen new or reimagined locations are in the works. More announcements coming over the next year. But the big news locally is a that SoCal favorite bakery Porto's is coming to Downtown Disney. RunDisney at Disneyland is coming back in 2024. More details coming soon. It's been awhile for Run Disney as the last one took place in 2017. Mickey's ToonTown Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway are coming along. It was good to hear that it will be a slightly different version of Runaway Railway than the WDW edition, to fit into the Disneyland ToonTown story. It's all opening in 2023. Tiana's Bayou Adventure will open in late 2024 in both Walt Disney World and Disneyland. The story for the ride is that it picks up where the film (Princess and the Frog) left off. In the new story, Princess Tiana is an entrepreneur and community leader in the year 1927. She is hosting a party for the community and we need to help Tiana to find a special ingredient that she's missing. Disney promises that the latest tech is being implemented to really enhance the outside of the whole area at night. Mist will be used like a painter's canvas. "True bayou magic." The attraction is to be a love letter to New Orleans. Guests should feel the story is authentic to the city. Another great piece of news is that the original cast will be lending their voices to the new attraction. --What's new at Disney Cruise Line The sixth ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet is all about adventure...celebrating Walt's love for exploration. The new Disney Cruise ship is called Disney Treasure. The Disney Wonder is heading to Australia and New Zealand late 2023. The island of Eleuthera and Lighthouse Point will be the new Bahamas port for Disney Cruise. 90% of the power will come from solar. What's Coming to Disney Parks Around the Globe Zootopia is opening at Shanghai Disneyland. World of Frozen at Hong Kong Disneyland will open in the second half of 2023, featuring a Wandering Oaken sleigh coaster. Disneyland Paris' Frozen Arendelle land is coming along and Disneyland Hotel is being fully reimagined -- opening in 2024 At Tokyo Disneyland, Disney Fantasy Spring will feature Peter Pan, Tangled and Frozen. Plus a totally reimagined Space Mountain will open by 2027 at Tokyo Disney. Pixar We Belong Together will be debuting at Walt Disney Studios Park at Disneyland Paris next year. The DLP 30th Anniversary celebrations will be continuing until September 2023.--Thank You for Listening to the Disney Travel PodcastThank you very much for listening to this episode, Amelia and I hope that you enjoyed it. Walt Disney once said EPCOT “would always be in a state of becoming” as a place that changes with the times. The Walt Disney World Resort theme park is delivering on that promise in a whole new way as it continues the biggest transformation in its history, bringing the next generation of immersive storytelling to life through a plethora of new attractions and experiences. EPCOT is now unified with four neighborhoods, each speaking to important aspects of the world and its people: World Showcase, World Celebration, World Nature, and World Discovery. These neighborhoods are filled with new experiences rooted in authenticity and innovation that take guests to new destinations, where the real is made fantastic in a celebration of curiosity, discovery and the magic of possibility. World Celebration: Epcot Entrance Plaza, Beacon of Magic, Connections Cafe and Eatery, Creations Shop, Club Cool, Dreamers point World Discovery: Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, MIssion Space, Space 220 Restaurant World Nature: The Land, Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana, The Seas with Nemo and Friends https://youtu.be/RYIDvB4K8g0
The press event for Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind was held this week. As part of that event, announcements were made about World Celebration & Discovery. Want to know what all that construction was about in the center of former Future World at Epcot? Well, despite ambiguous imagery, it appears we've been given a clearer view of what is coming to the heart of this Walt Disney World Resort. park We'll take a look at the details. As such, we'll look at what is the new festival center coming, Communicore, as well as a much more expanded Moana gardens than previously showcased. At least, that's what the drawings show. So let's see what is coming to a big chunk of Epcot and what it will look like. We'll share all the details we've uncovered, and we'll overview what we don't know.
WE'RE BACK! All of us are excited to be back on the mic and thank you for your patience. We start by discussing some of the EPCOT changes to Future World and then give our top former attractions in which we never got experience. Each of us provides a little history of each and tries to stay clear of the clichés. Whip up your favorite cocktail and join us. A centerpiece dining experience has been unveiled at Epcot this last week. Connections, located next to Creations (the gift shop), sits in what is ultimately to become World Celebration. This is the former Electric Umbrella, and before the Stargate Restaurant. But now it's much bigger, brighter, and fortunately tastier. It is two sided with one side dedicated to being a counter service restaurant, and the other side being a Starbucks cafe. I've had a chance during the last week to visit on three occasions, to include a shared visit with John Frost, owner of The Disney Blog, and a terrific friend. We connect (it's Connections after all) to look at a number of dishes and to talk all things Epcot. I also had a chance to visit with my daughter and later with my wife, and I share some of the culinary experiences we had to include not only the food, but the Cast, setting and processes. Join us as we review the dining experience at Epcot's Connections Cafe & Eatery.

They finally settled on the following six songs in their original classic versions: “September” “Disco Inferno” “Conga” “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” “I Ran” “One Way or Another” You won't know which track you're going to hear until you blast off. Plus we now know that the theme of the ride is to help stop Eson, the Celestial villain who is trying to complete an evil plan. --Connections Café & Eatery is Now Open at EPCOTConnections Café & Eatery is open and ready to serve in the World Celebration neighborhood. The restaurant's design includes nods to Walt Disney's original plans for EPCOT. There are two experiences – an eatery on one side serving lunch and dinner menus, and a café and pastry shop on the other open all day long. When walking past Spaceship Earth on the way into the park, Connections Café and Eatery is on the left. Floor-to-ceiling windows give a full view of the open space featuring modern décor and tempting smells of pastries baking, fresh coffee brewing and burgers on the grill. Since World Celebration is located in the center of the park, Connections Café & Eatery offers some great views as well.A colorful mural called “Global Gathering” covers one wall and reflects the heart of the restaurant – people from around the world gathering around food. It's one of the biggest murals Walt Disney Imagineering has ever created. Take note how the scenes blend seamlessly from sunrise to sunset. You can also see chefs at work in three show kitchens. Watch them grilling, sautéing and baking everything from burgers to pizzas and sprinkling pixie dust on fun desserts from milkshakes to waffles.Whether it's coffee or tea, you'll find it here showcasing how various cultures enjoy their favorite drinks. As always at WDW, don't forget to look down. There are three original floor inlays inspired by Walt's 1966 “Florida Project” site plans, where EPCOT was to serve as the “center” of Walt Disney World. These details honor Walt's original dream of EPCOT. --‘Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!' Opening Summer 2022 at Animal Kingdom ParkThe Nemo show is getting an update: “Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!” – opens this summer at Disney's Animal Kingdom Park. The fully updated, 25-minute show incorporates live performers and puppets, along with many of the favorite songs from the original “Finding Nemo: The Musical.”In addition to a new script, the show features new set pieces and a new LED video wall designed to visually extend the world created by the physical sets on stage. What's it Like to Visit Walt Disney World Right Now?Walt Disney World is pretty much back to normal in many ways. Masks are a thing of the past. In fact, we felt like the only guests wearing masks at all. We still required a negative Covid test to board a plane home, so we had to be extra careful (although this mandate for Canada is set to expire on April 1, 2022). It's very rare to see a mask on guests at Walt Disney World, except on monorails and buses, where they are still required (although we feel that this mandate won't be here for much longer. As Walt Disney World continues to emerge from the pandemic, there are still some things that are catching up. For example, there are not boats running from Disney's Contemporary Resort. This is because Disney World lost a large number of boat captains over the pandemic and they are currently trying to hire and train new captains as quickly as possible. On a related note, we were told that the SeaRaycer mini speedboats would not be back. Apparently, the boats sat around for too long over the pandemic and simply got gummed up and required too much service to make the fleet worth keeping. We don't believe they will be replaced based on our discussions with Disney Cast Members. Is Lightning Lane Better than FastPass+?In short, no.Disney's Genie + and Lightning Lane make visiting the parks at Walt Disney World much more challenging and frustrating versus previous methods of FastPass and FastPass+. We share full details in the episode, along with some tips and tricks for how to make the most of the current Lightning Lane and Individual Lightning Lane.Disney World Rides and Attractions Continue to Experience DowntimeConsistent with what we had been hearing before this visit, many Disney rides and attractions continue to experience more downtime than was previously "normal" for Walt Disney World. Once again, we believe that this is due to staffing challenges and hopefully this will be remedied once Walt Disney World returns to more robust Cast Member staffing levels. This was particularly noticeable on things like the Disney Vacation Club Moonlight Magic Special Event. When you only have three hours in a park (in this case, Epcot), having Ratatouille down and Spaceship Earth down and Frozen Ever After experiencing issues etc., it's not a good thing. It led to longer lines at the few attractions that were open and overall was a poor experience as a result. In other Disney Travel News...Connections Café Will Be the New Home of Starbucks at EPCOTThis spring, Connections Café will become the new home of Starbucks at EPCOT. Like other Starbucks locations throughout Walt Disney World Resort, this Starbucks will be designed to fit the theme of its surroundings. To make way for Starbucks to move to its new location in World Celebration, Traveler's Café in World Showcase will close this spring. Facemask Requirement Dropped for Disney SkylinerAs of March 16, face coverings are now optional for fully vaccinated guests on the Disney Skyliner. Face coverings will also be optional for fully vaccinated guests on Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser. At this time, face coverings remain required by all Guests (ages 2 and up) on monorails and Disney buses.Thank You for Listening to the Disney Travel PodcastThank you very much for listening to this episode, Amelia and I hope that you enjoyed it. However, international passengers still have to follow the travel requirements put in place by the federal government, so testing is still required. If you are traveling from outside the U.S., remember to check before flying. Also, Honolulu's Safe Access Oahu program has also ended, and visitors no longer have to provide proof of full vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test to dine on property. What hasn't changed: the State of Hawaii still has a face covering mandate for all indoor locations. At Disney Aulani Resort, face coverings are required for each Guest age 2 and up, and must be worn in all indoor locations, including Laniwai - A Disney Spa, except when actively eating or drinking while stationary and maintaining appropriate physical distancing. Located in the new World Celebration area of Walt Disney World's Epcot, The Creations shop is all about celebration, creativity, and innovation. The large-format art features and murals all represent Mickey, the creation. Brianna Pfost, Art Director at Walt Disney Imagineering, gave us the details. https://youtu.be/kNQXfGHPSvY

Now, here's the rundown of what we talked about: Updates from last week: Updates from last week:Regarding their favorite Deluxe/Deluxe Villa Resort, we had some additional responses!Cat writes: “Old Key West was huge and we liked it very much, but 3 BR villa at Bay Lake Towers is hands down our favorite. Park views (amazing at fireworks time) fireworks, spacious and open design, monorail access... absolutely wonderful”.Pam chimed in as well: “Boardwalk. Love theming, view of the Boardwalk. Excellent location between HS & Epcot. As well as convenient to multiple restaurants including those in Beach/Yacht club. And the Salon at the Beach Club.”Sheila said: “Bay Lake Tower especially with the Ellis family.”Cindy said: “Bay Lake Towers!”John chimed in: “Only have stayed at Saratoga Springs, Wilderness Lodge, and the Contemporary. Out of these three, Wilderness Lodge was my favorite. Loved the grounds and the boat transport to the campgrounds Contemporary and MK. Saratoga Springs much larger layout. Was in one of the quiet buildings. That was nice, but only time I can say I didn't like the walk, but it was really not too bad about 5 to 10 minute walk to the main building for food. Contemporary, loved the monorail. Got to meet my Captain there, Captain Hook. My best bud for the villains. I can't put my finger on it, but the Contemporary just was missing some of the magic. Don't know if it is just that it is one of the original resorts and feeling its age. Looking forward to GF and the Beach Club in the next 3 years.”Cheddar from the Big CheeseMike: Officially, as of October 1st, the “Neighborhoods” at Epcot will be official. As a reminder, there is World Discovery, World Celebration, World Nature (all part of the original Future World section) and World Showcase, which remains the same. World Discovery will have the attractions like Test Track and Guardians of the Galaxy; World Nature has attractions like Living with the Land, and World Celebration has attractions like Spaceship Earth.Brenda: Great News!
