How can we tackle deep-rooted health inequities and ensure sustainable change in our communities? In this episode, Dr. Thea James, Vice President of Mission and Associate Chief Medical Officer at Boston Medical Center, and Dr. Bisola Ojikutu, Commissioner of Public Health and the Executive Director of the Boston Public Health Commission, talk about the persistent challenges in achieving health equity, even in resource-rich cities like Boston, where structural inequities and systemic racism continue to drive disparities. COVID-19 exposed and exacerbated these inequities, disproportionately impacting communities of color and emphasizing the need for community-focused solutions. Dr. Thea James explains how institutions like Boston Medical Center have taken innovative steps, such as engaging communities to analyze data and co-create solutions, supported by strong leadership and accountability. Dr. Bisola Ojikutu shines a light on how sustaining momentum for health equity requires shifting from a moral to an economic imperative and embedding systemic changes through legislative action, like the Health Equity Compact's proposed reforms. Long-term success depends on creating policies and structures that transcend political and societal shifts, ensuring equity remains a core priority. Tune into this compelling conversation with Boston's leading experts as they unpack the systemic barriers, innovative solutions, and the critical role of policy in advancing health equity! Dr. Christine Crawford, associate medical director at NAMI, joins Gabe Howard to break down the subtle signs of mental health struggles in kids and teens. Learn how to spot red flags, approach tough conversations, and take action without overreacting. From understanding brain development to navigating crises, this episode offers expert tips and practical tools to help parents feel confident supporting their child's mental health. Tune in for insights that could make all the difference. “It's important that we kind of see past some of the worries about what a mental health diagnosis could do for a kid in terms of a label, because we're really thinking about the kid and hoping that they can be on a trajectory in which they can live out their best lives. But we have to provide them with the tools in order to get there, and we can't deny them that and deny them access to it, because we're worried that having a label of depression is going to ruin their lives. What will ruin their lives is not getting the help and treatment that they actually need.” ~Christine Crawford, MD, MPH To learn more -- or read the transcript -- please visit the official episode page. Some new data from the Boston Public Health Commission's "Health of Boston Mental Health Report" shows a concerning trend with young people in the city: more than 40% of Boston Public Schools students say they experience persistent sadness or hopelessness. That number is higher in students from marginalized communities, such as young women, those who identify as LGBTQ, or those who are Black or Latino. In response, the City of Boston has launched a new program called "Heads Up Boston", where trusted adults help young people become more comfortable with opening up to their peers about what can be a very difficult subject. Samara Grossman, Director of the Boston Public Health Commission's Center for Behavioral health and Wellness, talks with Nichole about the program and its impact.

Today we will be talking about the abusive v unhealthy relationship and how it can have a hold on you for example your physical and emotional health, victims of physical and emotional abuse often come across physical injuries, stress related illnesses, they might also suffer from anxiety and low self-esteem. Social isolation is also a big red flag because the abusers try to isolate their victims from friends and family which soon enough will make it difficult for the victim to seek support or an escape from a very help-seeking situation which will also make the victim feel very lonely which will give them no other option but to put up with the abuse. Children who are normally being put in the middle of situations like this or even being a stand by watching happen can make the child suffer from emotional and psychological trauma affecting their development due to the fact of their parents not having themselves together Start Strong, a program at the Boston Public Health Commission, is an internationally recognized high school peer leadership program that aims to prevent teen dating violence and promote healthy relationships. Visit storyrealestate.com. https://dossier.substack.com/p/the-cdc-will-vote-thursday-to-permanently?utm_source=twitter&sd=pf The CDC will vote Thursday to permanently shield Pfizer and Moderna from COVID vaccine injury liability A CDC committee will convene this week and likely vote Thursday to deliver permanent legal indemnity to Pfizer and Moderna, through the process of adding the drug companies’ mRNA injections to the child and adolescent immunization schedules. By adding the shots to the childhood schedule, the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) will transfer liability for vaccine injuries to the federal government’s National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP), allowing for Pfizer and Moderna to finally bring an FDA approved shot to the market without opening itself up to lawsuits. Moreover, it will act as another windfall for companies that have already brought in hundreds of billions of dollars in revenues, by requiring these vaccinations for children who attend public schools. In March 2020, the federal government invoked the PREP Act, which gave Pfizer and Moderna a tort liability shield due to the declared “public health emergency,” which the government is reportedly going to revoke in early 2023. The companies’ emergency use authorization shots have since been protected by the federal government through this 2005 congressional action. A draft agenda published by the CDC shows what will be on the schedule for Wednesday and Thursday’s meetings. The Health Resources & Services Administration has clarified what needs to happen for a vaccine to become liability free: “For a vaccine to be covered, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) must recommend the category of vaccine for routine administration to children or pregnant women, and it must be subject to an excise tax by federal law.” The Dossier has reported extensively on the coordinated effort by Big Pharma and the Biden Administration to delay the rollout of an FDA approved COVID vaccine, with legal experts suspecting the process is in place to protect Pfizer and Moderna from legal liability from vaccine injuries. Once described as the cure to the coronavirus, the novel mRNA shots have resulted in catastrophic failure, with a side effect profile exponentially higher than advertised. Thanks to a fraudulent, deceptive marketing campaign, assisted by top federal officials and high-profile pharmaceutical executives, the drugmakers and the federal government convinced millions of Americans to take shots that were much more dangerous (especially for young men), and much less effective than advertised. Over the course of COVID Mania, Pfizer and Moderna have raked in hundreds of billions of dollars in liability free dollars, enriching their executives and board members beyond their wildest dreams. Thanks to Big Pharma’s successful regulatory capture of Government Health, and corrupt bureaucrats’ willing compliance, it looks like the mRNA drug cartel will be completely off the hook when it comes to compensating the countless Americans who were harmed by their junk products. https://www.theepochtimes.com/boston-university-defends-controversial-study-on-covid-hybrid-strain-with-80-percent-mortality-rate-in-mice_4803917.html?utm_source=partner&utm_campaign=BonginoReport President Joe Biden plans to release even more barrels of oil from the federal government’s strategic reserves to keep gas prices low before the midterm elections. Biden’s latest decision marks more than 200 million barrels set for release in less than two years as president, more than all previous presidents combined according to the Wall Street Journal. Despite Biden’s historic oil releases to bring down the cost of gasoline, the OPEC+ nations announced their decision in October to cut oil production by two million barrels a day. The president expressed his disappointment with OPEC+ and Saudi Arabia’s decision, despite administration officials working behind the scenes urging them to delay their cuts until after the midterm elections. Biden recently campaigned in California where gas prices are nearly seven dollars a gallon. When asked about prices approaching seven dollars a gallon in the state, Biden replied, “Well, that’s always been the case here.” Despite gas prices rising again, Biden continues taking credit for gas prices declining from record highs in the Summer. “[A] lot of it is the result of getting the cost of living at the gas pump down by more — now even in California now — by more than a dollar nationally and — since the start of summer,” he said during a speech on Americans suffering from higher costs. https://www.dailyfetched.com/china-cuts-off-natural-gas-supplies-to-europe-just-in-time-for-winter/ China Cuts Off Natural Gas Supplies to Europe, Just in Time for Winter Communist China has told state-owned energy-importing companies to cease sending natural gas supplies to European nations already facing a catastrophic winter. According to Bloomberg, the Chinese Communist Party’s National Development and Reform Commission also told the state-owned energy giants CNOOC, PetroChina, and Sinopec to halt shipments of liquified natural gas to foreign buyers in Europe and Asia. China scooped up excess Russian gas since the war in Ukraine, as Europe faces an unprecedented energy crisis. The communist nation has managed to build up an excess of liquified natural gas amid lockdowns to comply with Beijing’s zero-Covid agenda. As Russia reduced shipments to the European Union in response to the bloc’s support of Ukraine and sanctions on Moscow, China began reselling its surplus LNG cargo to the EU at inflated prices. According to estimates, some four million tonnes of liquid natural gas was resold by China, which accounts for approximately seven percent of Europe’s imports during the same period. The Chinese government has not given a specific reason for halting the supply of natural gas supplies on the open market. However, the move could be an attempt by Xi Jinping to aid his ally Vladimir Putin in putting the squeeze on Europe at a crucial moment. Despite falling gas prices in Europe from their high in August, the European Union is still considering placing a price cap on imported LNG. Russia’s state-owned Gazprom responded by threatening to cut off all shipments to Europe, forcing the EU to reach out to countries like China selling on the international market. The EU globalists have rushed towards their green agenda and forestalled domestic energy production, specifically Germany, which banned fracking for its own natural gas in favor of cleaner alternatives. The move, however, has just left the bloc beholden to Russia to meet its energy needs and, ironically, China to meet its green goals – given that almost all solar panels are made in China. Last year, the head of the green lobbyist group, admitted: “Everybody knows what’s going on in China, and when facilities are based there, you have to accept that there’s a high possibility that forced labour will be used.” https://www.theepochtimes.com/boston-university-defends-controversial-study-on-covid-hybrid-strain-with-80-percent-mortality-rate-in-mice_4803917.html?utm_source=partner&utm_campaign=BonginoReport Boston University Defends Controversial Study on COVID Hybrid Strain With ’80 Percent’ Mortality Rate in Mice Boston University issued a statement Tuesday defending its research of a COVID-19 Omicron strain when they took the variant’s spike protein and attached it to the original COVID-19 strain, leading to a higher mortality rate in a certain species of mice, triggering concern among lawmakers. “The Omicron S-bearing virus robustly escapes vaccine-induced humoral immunity, mainly due to mutations in the receptor-binding motif… while Omicron causes mild, non-fatal infection, the Omicron S-carrying virus inflicts severe disease with a mortality rate of 80 percent,” the preprint study said. Meanwhile, Emily Erbelding, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases’s division of microbiology and infectious diseases, told Stat News that the Boston University’s grant application didn’t specify that researchers wanted to perform this work and the group did not say it was performing experiments to possible enhance a COVID-19 variant. An investigation is now underway, she said. Boston University issued a lengthy statement defending its research and said critics have misrepresented the goals of the study while refuting allegations that the study involved gain-of-function research, which can make a pathogen more deadly or transmissible. “The research was reviewed and approved by the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), which consists of scientists as well as local community members,” the statement from Boston University said. “The Boston Public Health Commission also approved the research. Furthermore, this research mirrors and reinforces the findings of other, similar research performed by other organizations, including the FDA. Ultimately, this research will provide a public benefit by leading to better, targeted therapeutic interventions to help fight against future pandemics.” Certain reports about the study were “false and inaccurate,” Boston University official Ronald Corley said in a statement. A report from the Daily Mail, he alleged, took the “80 percent” line out of context. Club Membership Plug: Let’s stop and take a moment to talk about Fight Laugh Feast Club membership. Despite years of evidence about the incredible outcomes, safety, and cost-effectiveness of midwives, midwifery care is still not the standard for pregnancy and birth in the US, and access to birthing centers remains limited. Yet, studies show they are associated with a reduction in cesareans, preterm births, increased breastfeeding success, and an overall positive experience of birth. This is why we need birthing centers and why the work of my guests, visionaries Nashira Baril and Katherine Rushfirth, is critical for creating a sea change in how people birth in this country.         Aviva, Nashira, and Katherine discuss:    Nashira's and Katherine's origin stories into birth work  What a birthing center is and how does it differ from home or hospital birth options  The advantages of birthing centers and working with a midwife   The fact that the birthing center model remains majority white-led and why this needs to change    The huge financial savings birth centers put back into the healthcare system  How birthing centers are important not just for individuals, but also for building community  Advice for people interested in the birthing center experience but who don't have access to a center   Ways you can support the Neighborhood Birth Center as well as other birthing centers      Learn more about the neighborhood birth center and find their video “You Were Welcomed with Love” HERE.    Nashira Baril, MPH, is the daughter and great-granddaughter of midwives, who midwifed her children at home. Nneka so generously shares her story about the lost of her child who was born stillborn due to undiagnosed preeclampsia and how that experience changed her in ways to begin to speak up, share her story & advocate for change. More about Nneka in her own words: Nneka Hall is the mother of four (2 Sunshines ages 21 and 16, an Angel baby who would be 11 and a Rainbow who is 7). In 2014 she founded Quietly United in Loss Together (QUILT) Campaign which is a Pregnancy And Infant Loss Awareness campaign designed to raise awareness of all types of loss from conception through a child's first two years of life, teach healthy fertility through womb health education, provide support to families who suffer these losses and provide support for memory programs so they won't close due to inability to afford supplies. The Moral and Business Case for Oral Health Integration with Dr. Myechia Minter-Jordan

The #HCBiz Show!

Poor oral health has a direct link to high risk of chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease. It contributes to depression, poor maternal health outcomes, and death. Research shows that it increased the risk associated with COVID-19. Yet we treat oral health as being separate from “healthcare”. 65 million Americans lack dental coverage and even Medicare provides no oral health benefits to our seniors.  Worse yet, this lack of coverage contributes to healthcare disparities as black adults are nearly seven times more likely to have an unmet dental need than white adults. But where there are problems there are opportunities. Today we're talking with Dr. Myechia Minter-Jordan, an MD, MBA, community health champion, and the President and CEO of the newly formed CareQuest Institute for Oral Health. Myechia shares with us how her role as the head of a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) helped her see the gaps in our system and the extraordinary benefits of integrating oral health into primary care delivery. Better yet, those benefits extend far beyond a moral imperative. There is a clear business case for integrating oral health in a more holistic health delivery system. Myechia breaks it all down for us, plus much more including:   Why oral health has been treated separately from healthcare. How oral health integration compares to behavioral health integration (which is already leading to improved outcomes and lower overall costs). The many ways CareQuest Institute is moving the needle including grants, research, innovation, and social impact investing. How entrepreneurs and startups can work with CareQuest Institute and why they will be launching the CareQuest Innovation Partners initiative to drive this. The need for teledentistry. The ways oral health and the COVID crisis have impacted one another. How ACOs, Direct Contracting Entities, and other risk-bearing organizations can benefit from oral health integration. The opportunity for dentists to rethink their own practice and begin to support primary care (and get reimbursed for it). How to foster relationships between dentists and primary care providers. Plus, we discuss The New Commonwealth Racial Equity and Social Justice Fund (NCF).     Myechia Minter-Jordan, MD, MBA Myechia Minter-Jordan, MD, MBA, serves as the president and CEO of the CareQuest Institute for Oral Health. A physician and business executive, Myechia leads a dynamic team of professional and clinical experts committed to building a future where every person can reach their full potential through excellent health. Through Myechia's leadership, CareQuest Institute operates as a catalyst for systems change, bringing forth ideas and solutions to create a more equitable, accessible, and integrated health system for everyone. CareQuest Institute collaborates with a wide range of partners to achieve its mission — to improve the oral health of all — through work in grantmaking, research, health improvement programs, policy and advocacy, and education, as well as leadership in dental benefits, care delivery, and innovation advancements. Myechia also continues to shine a national spotlight on the importance of ending deep social inequity. In 2020, Myechia joined 18 other Black and Brown executives in Massachusetts as a founding leader of The New Commonwealth Racial Equity and Social Justice Fund (NCF) to provide philanthropic support to community groups and coalitions fighting systemic racism and racial inequity in the Commonwealth. Originally seeded with $20 million, the NCF aims to raise $100 million. Before joining CareQuest Institute, Myechia served as chief medical officer and CEO of the Dimock Center, one of the largest community health centers in Massachusetts. During Myechia's tenure, Dimock was recognized as a national model for comprehensive, integrated health and human services. As CEO, Myechia formed partnerships with world-class institutions to advance person-centered care, including Harvard Medical School, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Partners HealthCare. Prior to Dimock, Myechia worked for Johns Hopkins Medicine as an attending physician and instructor of medicine. Myechia also invests personal time in her community, serving on several boards and committees, including BlueShield of California, The Boston Foundation, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Previously, she held appointed positions for influential agencies, including the Massachusetts Health Planning Council Advisory Committee and the City of Boston Public Health Commission. Myechia earned her doctor of medicine degree from Brown University School of Medicine and a master of business administration degree from the Johns Hopkins University Carey School of Business. She also received honorary doctorates from Northeastern University and Newbury College.   About CareQuest Institute for Oral Health CareQuest Institute for Oral Health is a national nonprofit championing a more equitable future where every person can reach their full potential through excellent health. We do this through our work in grantmaking, research, health improvement programs, policy and advocacy, and education as well as our leadership in dental benefits, care delivery, and innovation advancements. They released their first report earlier in April that looks specifically at the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on our oral health and overall health systems.    Key findings: Roughly 6 million adult Americans have lost their dental insurance due to the pandemic   Nearly two-thirds of them have a symptom that is frequently linked to oral diseases, such as tooth decay and periodontal disease.    Many others have canceled or put off important preventive care in the last year – 28 million people have delayed care because of concerns ranging from cost and lacking insurance to risk of exposure to the virus.     The data also reinforces what became very clear early on in the pandemic: low-income individuals, those living in rural areas, and families and communities of color have been disproportionately impacted by this virus. In fact, 60% of Black respondents said they knew someone personally who has died from COVID-19. Across all demographic groups, the higher a respondent's income level the less likely they were to know someone who has died from COVID-19.      Additional statistics on inequities in oral health care   Poor oral health has a direct link to higher risks of chronic illnesses, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, asthma, and more. It also leads to greater instances of depression and other mental health diseases.      Over 65 million Americans lack access to dental coverage prior to the pandemic, four times the number of people who are medically uninsured.    Americans in poverty are 2.5 times more likely to have an unmet dental need due to lack of insurance. Black adults are 68% more likely to have an unmet dental need than white adults.    Nearly 4 in 10 Black and Latino adults reside in 14 states where Medicaid's adult dental benefits cover no services or emergency-only care.      Press Release: New National Nonprofit Will Battle Inequity in Health Care     The #HCBiz Show! is produced by Glide Health IT, LLC in partnership with Netspective Media. We're only two episodes in, and we already blew up our own schedule. Why? Because recently, Elias led a conversation with our partners at Inner City Weightlifting that was too important not to share. In this special episode of The American Dream, you'll meet four members of the ICW team who are sharing their experiences with systemic racism and mass incarceration – and the work ICW is doing to drive change by turning suffering into solutions (and mud into flowers). Thomas Washington - ICW Coach and Advocate: Thomas, M.P.H., joined ICW in 2018 as a Coach & Advocate who specializes in helping students achieve their ICW certification. He has been designing and leading workouts for students and clients there. Jermaine Taylor - ICW Trainer and Gym Assistant: Jermaine was introduced to ICW in September 2012. Prior to ICW, Jermaine was a reputed leader of one of the most historically violent street gangs in Boston's recent memory. Prior to that, he spent time with the Department of Youth Services, with the earliest incarceration being at the age of 7. The direction in which Jermaine has come from is not indicative of where he is heading. Jermaine said, "ICW is the first program I've been a part of that wholeheartedly understands this. The fact that we take the time to deal with individuals on a case by case basis, and need by need basis really separates ICW from a lot of other programs. One mountain at time, one muscle at a time!” Feliciano Tavares - Chief Program Officer: A Boston Native, Feliciano has spent the majority of his almost 20 year career working with the "proven-risk" population across the state of MA. Prior to ICW, he spent the last 7 years of his career at the Boston Public Health Commission working for the Division of Violence Prevention's Safe and Successful Youth Initiative (SSYI). Throughout his career, he has shown a dedication for the improvement of the lives of the most vulnerable people within his community.Ian Kilpatrick - Head of Corporate Partnerships: Ian's role at ICW is to build and create strong community relationships through its Corporate Training program.Learn more about ICW here: https://www.innercityweightlifting.org/ Be sure to hit the subscribe button to get new episodes when they drop every month. In the meantime, be sure to leave a ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ review and share the pod with your friends. A patient diagnosed with measles on Sunday has been to numerous locations statewide where other people may have caught the disease. The person traveled to locations in Hyannis, Wellesley, Braintree, Framingham, Plymouth, and Waltham between Tuesday and Thursday of last week. Jenifer Elise Jaeger, the Director of the Infectious Disease Bureau at the Boston Public Health Commission, says that Boston’s high vaccination rate makes it unlikely for most people to be infected with the disease. If you were in the infected areas, she recommends that you know your vaccination history and get your child vaccinated for measles if they haven’t already. Report by Michael Choate

If there’s one thing Gonads taught us, it’s just how complicated human reproduction is. All the things we thought we knew about biology and sex determination are up for debate in a way that feels both daunting and full of potential. At the same time, we're at a moment where we’re wrestling with how to approach conversations around sex, consent, and boundaries, at a time that may be more divisive than ever. So host Molly Webster thought: what if we took on sex ed, and tried to tackle questions from listeners, youth, reddit (oh boy), and staff. But instead of approaching these questions the way your high school health teacher might’ve (or government teacher, who knows), Molly invited a cast of storytellers, educators, artists, and comedians to grapple with sex ed in unexpected and thoughtful ways. To help us think about how we can change the conversation. In this episode, an edited down version of a Gonads Live show, Molly's team takes a crack at responding to the intimate questions you asked when you were younger but probably never got a straight answer to. Featuring: How Do You Talk About Condoms Without Condom Demonstrations? Sanford Johnson. Wanna see how to put on a sock? What Are Periods? Sindha Agha and Gul Agha. Check out Sindha's photography here. Is Anything Off-Limits? Ericka Hart, Dalia Mahgoub, and Jonathan Zimmerman  Why Do We Do This Anyway? And Other Queries from Fifth Graders Jo Firestone "Sex Ed" is an edited* recording of a live event hosted by Radiolab at the Skirball Center in New York City on May 16, 2018. Radiolab Team Gonads is Molly Webster, Pat Walters, and Rachael Cusick, with Jad Abumrad. Live music, including the sex ed questions, and the Gonads theme song, were written, performed, and produced by Majel Connery and Alex Overington.  One more thing!  Over the past few months, Radiolab has been collecting sex ed book suggestions from listeners and staff, about the books that helped them understand the birds and the bees. Check out the full Gonads Presents: Sex Ed Bookshelf here! For now, a few of our favorites: Share book reviews and ratings with Radiolab, and even join a book club on Goodreads.   *Our live show featured the following additional questions and answerers: How do you talk to your partner in bed without sound like an asshold or a slut? Upright Citizens Brigade, featuring Lou Gonzales, Molly Thomas, and Alexandra Dickson What Happens to All the Condom Bananas? Rachael Cusick With live event production help from Melissa LaCasse and Alicia Allen; engineering by Ed Haber and George Wellington; and balloons by Candy Brigham from Candy Twisted Balloons Special. Don’t Miss This Week’s Foreplay… A new study suggests that millennials are waiting longer to have sex with one in eight still virgins at the age of 26. This could be due to a “fear of intimacy” that is thought to be caused by social media. Many young people feel intense pressure due to the exposure of hyper-sexualized images in the mass media plus their own social media presence. Previous generations reported that one in 20 were virgins at this age.
