19 children and 2 adults were shot and killed in a horrendous school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. It is horrific. It is senseless. It is the most recent in a long list of school shootings in America. This country continues to accept that this just happens here. And as a result, we have young children trying to process fears and problems that adults can't or won't address. How can we help our children and young people we love deal with what happened in Texas? How do kids process this kind of trauma? And how do we fight the hopelessness that comes after decades of hundreds and hundreds of murders in schools? Today's episode is a conversation with Dr. Colleen Lelli, Director of the Barbara and John Jordan Center for Children of Trauma and Domestic Violence Education and an education professor at Cabrini University. Welcome to Episode 79 of the Think UDL podcast: Higher Ed and K-12 Partnerships with Mary Budzilowicz and Lauren Benfield. Mary Budzilowicz is the Director of the Center for Universal Design for Learning Technology and Resources at Cabrini University and Lauren Benfield is a Project Consultant in the Office of Professional Learning of the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit in Pennsylvania. I usually interview just one person each episode, but today I am very glad to have representatives of both sides of this UDL partnership. My guests and I are specifically going to talk about the incredible work that Cabrini University and Montgomery County schools have forged in recent years to link UDL in their Higher Ed and teacher education programs with K-12 implementation by creating professional learning communities and operationalizing UDL in their local schools. This episode is chock full of resources that Mary and Lauren and their team have meticulously created and gathered over the past several years, so please be sure to check those out on the episode 79 webpage where you'll see padlets, wakelets, curated resources, and original videos, infographics, and webpages to jump start your partnerships or perhaps start your own thinking about a UDL center on your campus! During our conversation, at one point Lauren mentions the 2018-2019 school year when the membership exploded with more and more attendees but was then interrupted by the pandemic. After our taping she corrected that to the 2019-2020 school year, and you'll just have to stay tuned to hear how they handled, and even expanded, after that interruption! They are so creative and have so much to share! Thank you for listening and a special thank you to the folks at the UDLHE Network for their financial support of the Think UDL podcast!
The United States Constitution is the cornerstone of American government and society. It was also written a long time ago, and society has changed greatly since then. How does the document hold up? Why do conservatives and progressives read the same words and interpret them very differently at times? Why is it so hard to amend the Constitution, and why are both sides unlikely to change it with a constitutional convention? We asked John Lindros, a lecturer in Business and Constitutional Law at Cabrini University to come on the podcast to talk about why the Constitution hasn't been changed in decades and how well it reflects the reality of life in 21st century America. Math Renaissance: Growing Math Circles, Changing Classrooms, and Creating Sustainable Math Education (Natural Math, 2018) couples two educational memoirs: Student Rachel Steinig brings her experience from diverse schooling models, surveys of teachers and fellow students, and selections of peer-reviewed scholarship to an examination of math instruction in the United States. Her chapters seek to locate root causes, transcend conventional advice, and inspire readers to imagine radical alternatives. Teacher Rodi Steinig invites readers into the role of leading math circles with detailed play-by-plays from her own experience. These chapters evince the importance (and interplay) in this role of background knowledge, preparation, compassion, and improvisation—and, perhaps most saliently for beginning teachers, of resisting the urge to rescue. Taken together, the book critiques the existing systems that provide children's math education and drills down on an alternative model whose popularity continues to grow. Among my favorite parts of the book were Rodi's self-reflective thought bubbles on her performance facilitating math circles and Rachel's chapter on math instruction from a human rights perspective. The book is intended for teachers and parents of school-age children, though i think middle and high school students and even casual readers would find value in this forthright, thorough, and readable work. It was an absolute delight to discuss the book with both its authors! Rodi Steinig is an educator, author, and teacher trainer who has educated K-12 students in an inquiry-based approach for over twenty years. She received a B.S.in Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and her M.S.Ed. from Cabrini University. While Rodi finds joy in almost everything, she finds exceptional joy in pedagogy, communication about mathematics and pedagogy, and mathematics (current favorite math topic: isomorphic problems). Rodi has a great passion for sitting on the floor with a group of students in a collaborative spirit of inquiry. Rachel Steinig (she/her) is an educator, advocate, author, and future human rights lawyer. She recently graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania with a B.A. in Political Science, a concentration in International Relations, and triple minors in Hispanic Studies, Modern Middle Eastern Studies, and Latin American and Latinx Studies. She is passionate about human rights, education access, making math fun, gender equity, and conflict resolution. Learn more about your ad choices. We are honored and happy to be speaking to an incredible businessperson today! Mike Massari is the Chief Sales Officer of Caesars Entertainment and the new Co-chair of Meetings Mean Business. Mike has had a massive impact on the Meetings and Events industry. In today's episode, he talks about his career and discusses how he operates his business. He also explains the value of Meetings Mean Business and shares some points for business owners to focus on to build and grow their businesses and keep in touch with people. We hope you enjoy listening to our conversation with Mike Massari today! Michael (Mike) Massari's bio: Chief Sales Officer Michael Massari is a leader and innovator in the travel and tourism industry as the leader for the meetings, conventions, and events business for Caesars Entertainment's portfolio with more than 50 U.S. properties. Michael Massari was recently appointed co-chair for Meetings Means Business and has served on the board for Meeting Professionals International. Since 2011, he has successfully led a nationwide reorganization of Caesars Entertainment's property meetings businesses into one team including sales, catering, convention services, and banquet operations. This provides unique benefits for customers. The restructured sales force-placed team members in metro areas throughout the country to be closer to customers. The unique organizational structure gave the company a competitive advantage, changing the paradigm for the company's meetings business and redefining managing multiple properties within a market. The groundbreaking strategies paid significant dividends for Caesars Entertainment, increasing revenue and market share and establishing Caesars Entertainment as a leader in the meetings and events industry under Massari's guidance. In March 2020, Caesars Entertainment opened CAESARS FORUM, a 550,000 square-foot conference facility that redefined offerings for meetings and events in Las Vegas. Massari also made a significant impact on Atlantic City. He staked his career on the building and opening of the Waterfront Conference Center, which is an innovative meeting experience and the largest hotel conference center complex from Baltimore to Boston. This ushered in a new era for Atlantic City, resulting in a substantial boost in travel. Massari has spent more than twenty years in various executive roles within Caesars Entertainment. Before he was appointed the head of the meetings and events division, Massari was the Vice President of Las Vegas Meetings. A Philadelphia native, Massari earned his bachelor's degree from Cabrini University before achieving an MBA from the University of California, Irvine. He currently resides in Las Vegas with his wife and two daughters. Athletics Mike sees it as no coincidence that so many executives today have had athletic careers. He is happy to have had an athletic background because those experiences have helped him in his business career. Mike's career Mike has had a wonderful career! He worked at a catered event for the first time in Pennsylvania, in 1985, at the age of fifteen, and since then, all his work has involved catered events. He has done every job possible in the meetings and events world and enjoyed every moment! He has been with Caesars Entertainment for the last twenty years. Keeping in touch LinkedIn has been a savior for Mike to know what others are up to and keeping in touch with them. Properties Caesars Entertainment has many different properties in their company. Most of their business happens at their properties in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Lake Tahoe, and Reno. Sales Mike came up through the operations side of the business before transitioning to the sales side, where he spent a good portion of his career. Sell or die Mike runs a business that has only one channel. It is direct sales because that is the only way that you can purchase a meeting or event. In Mike's business, if they don't sell, they die. So they spend a lot of their time on sales. Operating a business Mike urges everyone in the Meetings and Events business to keep reminding themselves that they are operating a business. Mike Massari's formula for a successful sales process In a small business, the proprietor is often the primary salesperson. To transition to a larger business, they would have to put an executable, scalable, and repeatable sales process in place. That process should not be based on the charisma or the network of the proprietor, according to Mike. Unfortunately, most small business owners tend to struggle with doing that. Team members Mike has a great team! His team members are treated with dignity and respect. They are happy to have well-paid jobs in a great environment and help execute meetings and events again! Las Vegas For the last thirty years, Las Vegas has been one of the fastest-growing markets in the country. It is now reaching a point where it is big enough to warrant the extra things that smaller cities generally do not have, like the big NHL games. Mike believes that Las Vegas will continue to grow. Mike Massari and Meetings Mean Business Meetings Mean Business started just after the recession began in 2007-2008. Mike was a founding member and has been a proud partner ever since then. For Mike, Meetings Mean Business is about advocacy for the Meetings and Events industry. There are two things that people tend not to understand about Meetings Mean Business: The first is that nothing good in this world has ever happened without someone having had a meeting first. The second is that every part of society that the Meetings and Events industry touches benefits from meetings and events happening in their community. Meetings Mean Business exists to articulate that to everyone, but mostly to government officials, to help them understand how they can help their communities. Get involved Mike urges everyone in the Meetings and Events industry to get involved with Meetings Mean Business. Many people do not understand what the meetings and events business does, so that needs to be articulated to help them understand. The strength of MMB lies in its distribution, so more people advocating both locally and nationally will ultimately be better for everyone involved. We also talk about her relationship to Malcolm X and other prominent figures in the Black Liberation Movement, and her role in the development of Black Power politics. Fitzgerald also talks about Ms. Richardson’s thoughts on electoralism, cooptation, and her experience at the March on Washington. Ms. Richardson turned 99 years old earlier this month, and along with Dr. Fitzgerald’s biographic commentary we’ve weaved in some brief excerpts from an interview she gave several years ago. A link to that interview is found in the show notes, and we encourage folks to also seek out interviews with her and read The Struggle Is Eternal: Gloria Richardson and Black Liberation, which provides a deep exploration of her life, her organizing and her political thought. As always if you like what we do and have the means, please support us on patreon, you can become a patron of the show for as little as $1 a month.

Toby shares a sobering fact; that 72% of students with disabilities are dropping out of university. Why is this the case? Spoiler alert: one reason is that many university professors have zero training in working with students with varying needs. Today's conversation is eye-opening and shows us that we have a lot of work to do to ensure our students are getting their needs met in all levels of their education. The nation appears to be on the brink of civil war, if not already in it. With polarization as bad as at any time in our nation's history, how can we stop the violence? Discussions about “law and order” ordinarily end up promoting division and triggering historical trauma. Is there a way to stop the cycle of violence and heal victims and perpetrators alike? Can the truth set us free? If so, how do we go about telling the story? And who gets to tell it? As challenging as this time is, with the underbelly of America exposed, there is also an opportunity to see America as it really is. The first step in changing anything is to see it for what it is and then to create a new story that acknowledges the truth and envisions a better future. One obstacle to change is that systemic racism is not always easy to see, or understand. It is both complicated and deeply enmeshed in the American psyche. It is not a black and white issue (in more ways than one). Structural racism affects everyone, and prevents America from achieving its sacred purpose: unity in diversity. This purpose is enshrined in our Great Seal: E Pluribus Unum, “Out of the many, one”—a beautiful idea, but one that has yet to be realized. There is some good news today. More and more people of all colors are coming together to speak out against racism. The other good news is that white Americans are beginning to change their thinking, and in a compressed time frame. Just months ago, two-thirds of white Americans thought that police mistreatment of people of color was only “a few bad apples.” Now, more than half of white Americans recognize that there is systemic racism in police enforcement. As volatile and ugly as today is, more people see the need for change. Many unanswered questions remain. Now that white America is beginning to see the extent of systemic racism, how many will act for change and how many will seek to hold onto their privilege? Who will win the next election and how much effect will that have? In a representational republic, politicians are always a reflection of the people. Is this the time we finally make real progress? Join us as we delve into all of this with our guests Oscar Edwards and David Boje. “When we share all our stories, they are all stories, it's like water, it's one, and it can flow like water. Right now we lack the collective wisdom to do that. Even though (our stories) come from different streams, it is one source.” ~ Oscar Edwards “Why are we doing true storytelling? Because I discovered I grew up in a false history, a false narrative, of what is going on in America, and in the world” ~ David Boje Glenn Aparicio Parry, PhD, of Basque, Aragon Spanish, and Jewish descent, is the author of Original Politics: Making America Sacred Again (SelectBooks, 2020) and the Nautilus award-winning Original Thinking: A Radical Revisioning of Time, Humanity, and Nature (North Atlantic Books, 2015). Parry is an educator, ecopsychologist, and political philosopher whose passion is to reform thinking and society into a coherent, cohesive, whole. The founder and past president of the SEED Institute, Parry is currently the director of a grass-roots think tank, the Circle for Original Thinking. He has lived in northern New Mexico since 1994. www.originalpolitics.us Oscar Edwards is the Managing Member/CEO of Higher Growth Strategies, LLC (HGS) and also an acclaimed speaker, consultant, trainer, advisor, and business coach with the ability to make complex subjects understandable and fun. In other words, he is a good storyteller. Oscar goes way back with fellow guest David Boje to their days in the early 80s at the UCLA Anderson School of Management (where Oscar received his BA in Economics and an MBA in Finance & Marketing). They worked together first at the Joint Center for Community Studies with Dr. C.Z. Wilson and they also worked with the late Leroy Wells on the development of a university student quality of life index Oscar has hands-on experience in management, business modeling, strategic planning, managerial accounting, and finance for a host of industries, including construction, sports & entertainment, media, telecom, public works, public transportation, public safety, and public health industries. He is on the finance faculty for Los Angeles City College. He is also a curriculum designer and instructor for a number of other entrepreneurial eco-learning systems focused on women, minorities, and veterans in Southern California. Oscar has been recognized for his work with small businesses and his community volunteerism by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, California State Assembly and Senate, the United States Congress, United Way of Los Angeles, and many other civic and community organizations. He received recognition early, winning the Outstanding Young Man in America award in 1984, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Black Business and Professional Association in 2000. Oscar is currently working with many community based organizations to enhance their organization capacity, including cultural centers, churches, financial, and educational institutions. He strives to empower communities of color to be self-reliant and yet embrace the intercultural dynamic that is the norm in today's families and households. David Boje is what Michel Foucault calls a ‘specific intellectual', an international scholar confronting and deconstructing the ‘regimes of truth' with his own storytelling paradigm. He has written 16 books as well as a myriad of book chapters and peer-reviewed journal articles and been cited in over 5000 books and articles. His most recent books are: True Storytelling (Routledge, Francis & Taylor) with Jens Larsen and Lena Bruun, Doing Conversational Storytelling Interviewing for Your Dissertation ( Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd.) with Grace Ann Rosile. He created the field of “ante-narrative” research, which analyzes all that is antecedent to the creation of western narratives and indigenous living stories. David Bojeearned his Ph.D. from University of Illinois in 1978, and became assistant professor at Anderson School of Management, UCLA, then became full professor at Loyola Marymount University, earning six teacher of the year awards. He retired in 2018 from New Mexico State University, as Regents Professor and is currently Professor Emeritus. He also teaches qualitative storytelling science methods at Cabrini University in Philadelphia. He helped form the ‘True storytelling' rock band which teaches a loyal fan base of global participants on ‘true storytelling ethics, ensemble leadership and sustainability. He gives invited keynote presentations on storytelling science, water crises, racial capitalism, and the global climate crisis, all around the world. This weeks episode takes us to Cabrini University and the Main Line Lacrosse Classic. We catch up with players and coaches as several teams finally get their season underway.
On this episode, I Zoom in Lyn Hilt and we chat about her journey from classroom teacher to becoming a teacherpreneur. Lyn Hilt is an educational leadership and instructional technology consultant who uses her experiences as elementary principal, instructional technology coach, and classroom teacher to facilitate meaningful professional learning experiences designed to help promote innovative teaching & learning. As instructional technology integrator and coach in Pennsylvania, she served three elementary schools. She worked with teachers and students by providing professional development opportunities and resources to staff, writing curricula, designing learning activities, and pushing into classrooms to work with students on technology-infused project work. Prior to her coaching position, Lyn served as elementary principal for five years in the same district, and it was while serving in this leadership role that she discovered the joys and benefits of connected learning and leadership. Lyn is also the community manager for the vibrant and inspiring ChangeLeaders Community, a space created by the Modern Learners team, designed for current and aspiring educational leaders, dedicated to pushing the boundaries of learning. Lyn is an avid blogger and contributor to social networks and has presented at various local, state, and national conferences on topics ranging from professional development to networked educational leadership.
