Define gaslighting: A psychological tactic used to manipulate someone into doubting their reality, memory, or perception. Why this matters for Christians? God calls us to walk in truth, and deception is a tool of the enemyKey Scripture: John 8:32 – “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”John 8:44 reminds us about the father of lies….You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. Questions to think about… Have you ever felt like someone made you question your reality? How did you recognize it?Biblical Examples of Gaslighting The Serpent in the Garden (Genesis 3:1-5)How Satan gaslighted Eve by twisting God's words: “Did God really say…?”Application: Recognizing when someone distorts God's truth to control or deceive. Jacob Deceives his father Isaac to trick him in giving the first born blessing to him (Genesis 27)Application: Manipulation leads to broken trust and division. Pharaoh & the Israelites (Exodus 5:6-9) Pharaoh increases the Israelites' labor but blames them for being lazy. Application: When leaders or people in power gaslight others to maintain control. The Pharisees and Jesus (John 9:24-34) The Pharisees try to gaslight the healed blind man into denying his healing. Application: When religious leaders use authority to suppress truth.Advice - Question to ask in your relationships? Have you ever been pressured to believe a lie despite knowing the truth? How did you respond? How Gaslighting Affects Us Spiritually and Emotionally Creates confusion and doubt (James 1:6-8 – A double-minded person is unstable.) Destroys trust in relationships (Proverbs 12:22 – “The Lord detests lying lips.”)Leads to emotional and spiritual exhaustion (Psalm 55:21 – “His speech was smooth as butter, yet war was in his heart.”)Breaks identity and self-worth (Psalm 139:14 – “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”) Reflect: Have you ever felt emotionally or spiritually drained after interactions with a certain person? How to Respond to Gaslighting Biblically Stand firm in God's truth (John 17:17 – “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.”) Set boundaries against manipulation (Matthew 7:6 – “Do not give dogs what is sacred.”) Seek wise counsel (Proverbs 11:14 – “Where there is no guidance, people fall.”) Pray for discernment (1 John 4:1 – “Test the spirits to see whether they are from God.”) If needed, walk away (Luke 4:28-30 – Jesus left when people rejected the truth.)Challenge - • Identify one situation where you need to stand firm in truth. • Ask God for wisdom to set healthy boundaries.God is a God of truth, not confusion (2 Timothy 1:7 – “For God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind.”) • Share this episode with someone who may need encouragement.https://rocksolidfamilies.orgSupport the show#Rocksolidfamilies, #familytherapy, #marriagecounseling, #parenting, #faithbasedcounseling, #counseling, #Strongdads, #coaching, #lifecoach, #lifecoaching, #marriagecoaching, #marriageandfamily, #control, #security, #respect, #affection, #love, #purpose, #faith, #affairs, #infidelity
SHOW NOTES: On this show…we are attempting to avoid the Certainty Trap by asking, "Are you as right as you think you are?" Have you ever felt so sure you were right about something, only to later discover there was more to the story—or a completely different side you hadn't considered? That moment can be humbling, even a little uncomfortable, but it's also where growth begins. We've all been there—standing our ground, convinced that our perspective is the correct one. Whether it's a debate about current events, a disagreement in a relationship, or simply our interpretation of a situation, we often hold tightly to our beliefs. In this episode, we're diving into the human tendency to cling to certainty, even when we might not have all the facts. We'll explore the importance of self-awareness, the value of considering opposing viewpoints, and how embracing a bit of uncertainty can lead to personal growth and deeper connections with others. So, let's challenge our assumptions and open the door to new perspectives—who knows what we might discover? Let's start by calling out the very human thing we all do: we like to be right. I mean, who doesn't? Being right feels good—it's validating, it's safe, and it gives us a sense of control. But the brain takes it a step further. Scientifically speaking, our brains are wired to protect our current beliefs. We're not just thinking—we're filtering, editing, and defending. This is thanks to something called confirmation bias, which is your brain's way of saying, “Let's only pay attention to the stuff that proves we already know what we're talking about.” Here's a real-life example: you've decided your partner never listens to you. So, every time they forget something you said—ding ding ding—more proof. But when they do listen? You might not notice. Or maybe you write it off as a fluke. That's confirmation bias in action. You're scanning for evidence that supports what you already believe and quietly ignoring what doesn't fit. Then there's overconfidence bias, which is exactly what it sounds like: thinking we know more than we do. Ever found yourself mid-debate, completely certain about a “fact” you read online… only to later realize you misread it or, oops, it was a meme? Yeah, same. Our brains often give us the feeling of being right before we've actually done the homework. And once we're feeling confident, our openness to alternative views tends to shrink like jeans in the dryer. Now, let's turn the mirror inward. It's time for a little self-reflection: Recall a Recent Disagreement: Think about a recent situation where you were convinced you were right. What was the topic? Who were you discussing it with? Identify Your Sources: What information did you base your opinion on? Was it firsthand experience, something you read, or perhaps information from someone you trust? Consider the Other Perspective: What was the other person's viewpoint? Can you understand why they might see things differently? Assess Your Openness: During the discussion, were you genuinely open to hearing the other side, or were you more focused on proving your point? Reflect on the Outcome: How did the conversation end? Did you learn something new, or did it reinforce your original belief? By engaging in this exercise, you may uncover patterns in your thinking and identify areas where you can be more receptive to differing viewpoints. Dr. David W. Johnson with “The Importance of Taking the Perspective of Others.” Found at Psychology Today Certainty Is a Psychological Trap and It's Time to Escape also found at Psychology Today Let's go to the well….Annie Duke explains why being uncertain is a hidden strength CHALLENGE: Identify one belief or opinion you hold with absolute certainty and actively seek out information or perspectives that challenge it. Embrace the discomfort of uncertainty, and observe how this openness can lead to deeper understanding and personal growth. Remember, true wisdom often begins with the acknowledgment of what we don't know. I Know YOU Can Do It!
SHOW NOTES: On this show… we are going beyond comfort as we step outside of our comfort zones and embrace growth. We've all been there—nestled comfortably in our routines, sipping the same coffee, walking the same paths, and binge-watching that favorite series for the umpteenth time. It's cozy, predictable, and safe. But have you ever wondered what lies beyond that snug bubble? What adventures, opportunities, and personal growth await when you dare to venture into the unknown? Stepping outside your comfort zone isn't just a catchy phrase; it's a transformative journey that challenges your fears, bolsters your confidence, and shatters those pesky limiting beliefs. In this episode, we'll explore the exhilarating (and sometimes nerve-wracking) world beyond our comfort zones. From understanding the psychology behind our fears to uncovering the hidden costs of staying stagnant, we'll navigate this path together to discover how embracing discomfort can lead to unparalleled personal growth. Let's start at the beginning—what exactly is a “comfort zone”? Sounds cozy, right? Like fuzzy socks, predictable routines, and your favorite Netflix binge. But in psychological terms, your comfort zone is more than just what feels familiar. It's a behavioral space where your activities and decisions fit a routine and pattern that minimizes stress and risk. Inside it, you're cruising—things feel manageable, safe, and under control. But spoiler alert: not much growth happens there. Now, stepping outside of that bubble? That's where things get interesting. Psychologists have mapped this out into zones: beyond the comfort zone lies the learning zone, where you face new challenges, gain skills, and build resilience. Keep going and you'll hit the growth zone—this is where purpose, confidence, and real transformation happen. It's the place where you say yes to the things that scare you a little but excite you a lot. The catch? It's also where the uncertainty lives. The fear. The doubt. That tiny inner voice that says, “Yeah but… what if I fail?” And hey, that voice has a point—there is risk involved. But there's also risk in staying stuck. The longer we stay in our bubble, the more we reinforce limiting beliefs—like “I'm not good at that,” or “That's just not who I am.” These beliefs become like padded walls, keeping us “safe,” but also keeping us small. And here's the wild part: you might not even realize you're stuck. You might just feel low-grade frustration, boredom, or restlessness—like something's missing but you can't quite name it. That's often your potential, knocking on the door, wondering when you're going to invite it in. Is It Time to Leave Your Comfort Zone? How Leaving Can Spark Positive Change Michael Hyatt asks and answers; Are Your Beliefs Keeping You Stuck? Found on Full Focus Joey Schweitzer on How the comfort zone is ruining your life Here are five powerful ways to challenge limiting beliefs Talk Back to the Voice in Your Head You know the one. That inner critic that says, “You're not good at this,” or “Who do you think you are?” Call it out! Literally question it like a nosy neighbor: Says who?” “Is that actually true or just something I picked up along the way?” When you start treating those beliefs like suggestions instead of facts, you regain control of the narrative. Look for the Evidence (and the Holes) Take your limiting belief and pretend you're a lawyer trying to prove or disprove it. Belief: “I'm not creative.” Evidence: Have you ever solved a problem in a new way? Cooked without a recipe? Decorated a space? Boom—creative. Most limiting beliefs fall apart under even the gentlest cross-examination. Reframe the Story Instead of saying “I always mess this up,” try “I'm still learning, and each attempt gets me closer.” Reframing isn't lying to yourself—it's choosing a perspective that empowers instead of paralyzes you. Think of it like adjusting the lens on your camera: same scene, better focus. Take Micro-Actions That Prove It Wrong One of the fastest ways to challenge a belief is to act in spite of it. If you believe, “I'm not confident speaking up,” try asking a question in a meeting. Tiny actions stack up. And each time you do the thing you thought you couldn't, that belief loses its power. Borrow Someone Else's Belief When your self-belief is shaky, lean on someone who sees you clearly. A coach, friend, mentor—someone who's rooting for you. Ask, “What do you see in me that I'm missing?” Sometimes we need to borrow confidence until we build our own. CHALLENGE: Identify one area in your life where fear or complacency has kept you confined. Take a deliberate step this week to push beyond that boundary, no matter how small, and embrace the growth that awaits on the other side. Remember, life begins at the end of your comfort zone. I Know YOU Can Do It!

Even before last weekend's race, several of my friends and athletes that I coach knew I was going to participate in my first winter triathlon. There was a lot of curiosity before and since the post I've received a lot of continued curiosity and questions about what this event was all about and how to train for one. When I first proposed the idea for doing the Breckebeiner USAT National Championship for Winter Triathlon, I really didn't know what to expect. I know I had my own reasons for being on the fence initially, but I got swept up in the excitement and fun from the interview we did with Vic Brumfield and Liz Kollar from USAT. Just as I was on the fence, I know this was not a “no brainer” “all in” decision for you initially and for the purpose of this discussion, you and I can unpack what our reservations may have been and contrast it with how we actually experienced this winter triathlon and share some recommendations for others, so they can experience it for themselves. Get Gritty Tip: Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway Fear isn't a stop sign—it's a signal that you're stepping into something meaningful. The fear of failure, judgment, or the unknown is what keeps most people stuck in the comfort zone. But here's the truth: waiting to feel "ready" is the fastest way to stay exactly where you are. Courage isn't about eliminating fear. It's about moving forward despite it. That first open-water swim? That first race? That business move you've been avoiding? The fear won't disappear before you start—you must start *with it*. And once you do, fear loses its grip. Challenge: Identify one thing you've been avoiding because of fear. Commit to taking one action toward it today. Don't wait for the fear to subside—prove to yourself that you can move through it. Grit isn't about never feeling afraid. It's about showing up anyway. The Art Of Subtraction #RTTBROS #Nightlight The Art of Subtraction: Finding Life's Sweet Spot "Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away." - Proverbs 4:14-15 KJV Recently, I heard about a gardener who was asked the secret to growing such beautiful plants. His answer struck me with its profound simplicity: "I just remove anything that stops them from growing." This wisdom resonated deeply with my own journey of growth and purpose. Then I recalled my pastor mentor's practical insight: "You can have a good life and a good ministry if you just don't do dumb stuff." His words, though humorous, carry the same truth as the gardener's - sometimes the path to success is more about what we avoid than what we pursue. Like Solomon in Ecclesiastes, I've learned that life's greatest wisdom often lies in recognizing and avoiding dead-end streets. I've discovered that my most significant growth hasn't come from adding more activities or pursuits, but from intentionally eliminating those things that hinder my progress. Just as a gardener doesn't need to teach a plant how to grow - it knows inherently - I've realized that my role is often simply to remove the obstacles that block my natural development in God's plan. Whether it's unhealthy relationships, time-wasting habits, or draining commitments, each "pruning" creates space for new growth. Prayer: Father, give me discernment to recognize and courage to remove those things in my life that obstruct my growth toward Your purposes. Help me see clearly which paths to avoid and which to pursue. Amen. Today's Challenge: Identify one "dead-end street" in your life that's consuming resources without producing growth. What specific step can you take today to begin removing this obstacle? Be sure to Like, Share, Follow and subscribe it helps get the word out. https://linktr.ee/rttbros
The Deliberate Leaders Podcast challenges conventional thinking and inspires action. The episode addresses The Leadership Blind Spot around the concept that knowing and not doing is equivalent to not knowing at all. Many leaders pride themselves on being informed, but the information is useless without action. The Problem:• Knowing doesn't mean anything without action.• Leaders often know what they should do but fail to act.• Example: Leaders know they need to delegate more but continue to hoard tasks.Knowing without doing leads to burnout.• Many business owners know they should manage their finances but avoid it.• Leaders know their team needs constructive feedback but avoid tough conversations.• Many know personal growth is important but put off coaching and development.• Hesitation to act stems from fear of failure, lack of accountability, and comfort in the status quo.• Being unwilling to risk doing the wrong thing may mean you're already doing the wrong thing by staying still.Solutions:• Start small: Choose one thing to act on this week.• Find an accountability partner.• Measure progress, not perfection: Celebrate action, even if the outcome isn't perfect."Clarity comes from engagement, not thought".Challenge:• Identify something you know you should be doing but aren't.• Write it down and commit to taking action.• The only thing worse than not knowing is knowing and doing nothing.• Your edge in business is doing better, not just knowing more.Call to Action:• Share the episode with other leaders.• Consider coaching to help close the gap between knowing and doingAbout the Host:Allison Dunn• Host of the Deliberate Leaders Podcast• Business Coach• Founder of Deliberate DirectionsConnect:• Website: Deliberate Directions• Podcast: Deliberate Leaders PodcastReminder: Subscribe and leave a review to support the podcast!

Adapt and Overcome #RTTBROS #Nightlight Adapt and Overcome: God's Call to Holy Resilience "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." - Philippians 4:13 #FaithfulStrength #AdaptAndOvercome #SpiritualResilience In military training, soldiers learn a powerful mantra: "Adapt and overcome." This principle, born in battlefield necessity, carries profound spiritual truth. Just as soldiers must adjust their strategies while maintaining their mission, believers must adapt to life's challenges while holding fast to their faith. Consider Joseph, who adapted to life as a slave, a prisoner, and finally a ruler - all while overcoming through unwavering faith. "But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good" (Genesis 50:20). His circumstances changed dramatically, but his character remained steadfast. The Apostle Paul exemplified this principle perfectly: "I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need" (Philippians 4:12). Paul adapted to every situation while overcoming through Christ's strength. Biblical Principles for Adapting and Overcoming: - "Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed" (Romans 12:2) - "And we know that all things work together for good" (Romans 8:28) - "Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong" (1 Corinthians 16:13) Prayer Point: Lord, grant me the wisdom to adapt to changing circumstances without compromising my faith. Help me see obstacles as opportunities for Your power to be displayed. Like Joseph and Paul, let me overcome through Your strength, not my own. In Jesus' name, Amen. Today's Challenge: Identify one current challenge in your life. Write down: 1. What needs to adapt (your approach, not your values) 2. What needs to remain unchanging (your faith principles) 3. One specific action step toward overcoming Remember: God's principles are unchanging, but His methods are infinitely creative. True spiritual resilience isn't about avoiding change - it's about staying anchored to Christ while adapting to life's storms. NOTES: Stress is when PRESSURE is GREATER than our CAPACITY to handle the situation. As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord's feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn't it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.” But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:38–42 (NLT) HOW TO MANAGE STRESS 1. REMEMBER WHO GOD IS. Worship reminds me how God is BIGGER than my STRESS. 2. REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE. Avoid COMPARISON. 3. REMEMBER WHAT YOU REALLY NEED What do I really NEED? 4. REMEMBER TO SIT. Your INPUT must exceed your OUTPUT. BOTTOM LINE: I can't control WHAT happens to me, but with God's help, I can choose my RESPONSE. CHALLENGE: Identify one thing to help REDUCE your stress.
NOTES: Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy life, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord. Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many. Hebrews 12:14–15 (NLT) Bitterness is the result of unresolved, unforgiven anger and resentment built up over time. It's an INVISIBLE root that produces VISIBLE fruit. THREE SIGNS OF UNRESOLVED ANGER SIGN #1: FUME and SPEW. SIGN #2: PAYBACK. SIGN #3: SILENT attack. HOW DO WE KILL THE ROOT OF BITTERNESS? EXPOSE the OBJECTS of your bitterness. Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them. Ephesians 5:11 (NLT) Give up your claim to REVENGE and BLAME. Get to the ROOT of the PROBLEM. BOTTOM LINE: A bitter ROOT produces bitter FRUIT. THE CHALLENGE: Identify the ROOT.
NOTES: Pilate said, “So you are a king?” Jesus responded, “You say I am a king. Actually, I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true.” “What is truth?” Pilate asked. Then he went out again to the people and told them, “He is not guilty of any crime. But you have a custom of asking me to release one prisoner each year at Passover. Would you like me to release this ‘King of the Jews'?” But they shouted back, “No! Not this man. We want Barabbas!” (Barabbas was a revolutionary.)… John 18:37-40 “What? Crucify your king?” Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” the leading priests shouted back. Then Pilate turned Jesus over to them to be crucified. John 19:15-16 What is keeping you from following Jesus? PRIDE: You don't see your NEED for a SAVIOR because you don't think you need SAVING. FEAR: Jesus might ask you to DO SOMETHING you DON'T want to do. COMPROMISE: You walk in YOUR WAY instead of His. BOTTOM LINE: What will you DO with JESUS? CHALLENGE: IDENTIFY your HURDLE

4 CATEGORIES of JESUS'S Miracles: Miracles of HEALING. Miracles of protection. Miracles of provision. Miracles of deliverance. The greatest TRICK the devil ever pulled: Convincing world he didn't EXIST. MARK 5:1-20 For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12 (NLT) TWO WARNINGS: Never OVER-emphasize the power of Satan. Never UNDER-emphasize the power of Satan. Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are. 1 Peter 5:8–9 (NLT) THE GOOD NEWS: We don't fight with OUR power. We fight with CHRIST'S power. Do what's natural and ask God for the supernatural. BOTTOM LINE: Our enemy is STRONG. Jesus is STRONGER. THE CHALLENGE: Identify your battle. Do what's natural. Pray for the supernatural.
#064 – The Way Other People Treat You Gives You Information When you feel mistreated by another person, it is easy to become very reactive, to feel victimized, angry, and justified in your reactions. But that doesn't have to happen. The way another person acts towards you gives you information about them and what is going on inside of them. The way you react to them tells you and them what is going on inside of you. Takeaways: #1: What another person does and says to you gives you information about them.#2: What you say or do to the other person gives you information about you. Challenge:Identify a person you are not getting along with. Write down all the thoughts you have about this person. Take a look at those thoughts. They are creating the feelings you are having about them. Is this the way you want to feel? Want to become less reactive, more peace and greater resilience? I read the story of a mother and her four-year-old daughter were preparing to retire for the night. The child was afraid of the dark, and the mother, on this occasion alone with the child, felt fearful also. When the light was out, the child caught a glimpse of the moon outside the window. “Mother,” she asked, “is the moon God's light?”“Yes,” said the mother. The next question was, “Will God put out His light and go to sleep?”The mother replied, “No, my child, God never goes to sleep.”Then out of the simplicity of a child's faith, she said that which gave reassurance to the fearful mother, “Well, as long as God is awake, there is no sense both of us staying awake.”There is so much that causes us to be afraid. We fear for our future, fear for our families, fear for our safety, fear for our health, and so much more.A few nights ago, I was reading my Bible before turning out the light. I was in Mark chapter 5 and read a simple but assuring word given by Jesus.Mark 5:22-24 - “Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.” So Jesus went with him.”Vs. 35-36 - “While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?” 36 Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, “Don't be afraid; just believe.”As we read on in the story we see Jesus goes to their home and heal's the 12 year old girl. But what stands out to me in this story is the journey. In desperation, Jarius finds Jesus and pleads with him earnestly to come to his house and heal his dying daughter. He expresses his faith by saying that he believed Jesus could heal her.So, they are walking and on their way to his house, someone comes and reports to them that the little girl has died. Put yourself in Jarius' position. He is devastated. His sweet little girl passed away. He didn't get Jesus there soon enough. But notice Jesus' response… Jesus says, “Don't be afraid, just believe.”Like Jarius, you probably have an urgent need that you desire God to meet. Doubt creeps in and says Jesus won't get there soon enough, but I hope today you can hear the voice of our savior saying “don't be afraid, just believe.”Today you don't need a sermon. You don't need a deep theological truth. You just need the simple, reassuring words of Jesus, “Don't be afraid, just believe.”There are times in our lives when things happen that press us to our limits and beyond. When that happens, we have a choice. We can pull the covers over our heads, isolate ourselves, and try to escape from it all. Or we can embrace what we're feeling and move forward in faith that God has a future for us.Do not be afraid; only believe: Jesus told Jairus to do two things. First, to stop being afraid. It sounds almost cruel for Jesus to say this to a man who just lost his daughter, but Jesus knew that fear and faith don't go together. Before Jairus could really trust Jesus, he had to decide to put away fear. Second, Jesus told Jairus to only believe. Don't try to believe and be afraid at the same time. Don't try to believe and figure it all out. Don't try to believe and make sense of the delay. Instead, only believe.Today's Challenge: Identify what is causing you to be afraid and bring it to Jesus. I'm confident you'll hear his calming words: Don't be afraid, just believe. As you put your trust in him, allow his peace to fill your heart and mind.

When I think about doubt, my mind wanders to one of the disciples of Jesus. His name was Thomas. For 2,000 years he has been nicknamed “Doubting Thomas.” We find the story in John 20. Jesus has been crucified. His 12 disciples are in hiding. The doors are locked. The resurrected Jesus had already appeared to his disciples. But, you know, it doesn't hurt to lock the doors! We learn something interesting about Thomas. He wasn't with the disciples the first time Jesus appeared to them proving his resurrection. They tell Thomas what had happened and he makes his famous statement, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it.”A week later Jesus appeared to the disciples again and this time Thomas was with them. Jesus said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side, Stop doubting and believe.” Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God.”Like Thomas, all of us have times when we doubt God in some way. •Some of us question whether God would love and accept us.•Some of us question whether the Bible can be completely trusted•Sometimes we doubt because we can't reconcile the world's suffering with a loving God.•Some struggle because in all of our difficulty and discouragement we can't see God.Here's what we need to understand:•Our faith is stronger because we have dealt with our doubts.•Tested faith is the strongest kind of faith•You will go through periods in your life where you will ask, “God, are you there?” “God, are you going to answer my prayer?” “God why is this happening in my life?”•But as you sort through these things, as you investigate, your faith becomes stronger. So, what should we do with our doubts?1. Identify your doubts - When we get specific about our doubts that's when God will help us work through them. When I get specific about my doubts, I can look for answers in God's Word. I can talk with trusted friends. I can read helpful books. And most of my questions are answered.C.S Lewis once wrote, “If ours is an examined faith, we should be unafraid to doubt. If doubt is eventually justified, we were believing what clearly was not worth believing. But if doubt is answered, our faith has grown stronger. It knows God more certainly and it can enjoy God more deeply.2. Discover the root of your doubtsWhere are they coming from?•Is it fear?•Is it an incomplete understanding of God?•Is it because we have based our faith on our feelings?3. Don't give up searching for answersJeremiah 29:13 – “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all of your heart.” 4. Ask God to reveal himself to you“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” (Matthew 7:7 NIV)If you are struggling with doubt, you can pray, you can study, you can ask God to reveal himself to you, you can read. The answers are there. God will use your doubts to deepen your faith.Today's Challenge: Identify your doubts and bring them to God. Ask for His reassurance. Study his Word. Look for the answers. Hold onto your faith in God. You may be in a difficult season, but you are not alone.Visit the website: 5MinuteDiscipleship.comFollow on social:Facebook.com/5minutediscipleshipInstagram.com/5minutediscipleship
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is —his good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:1-2)Paul is describing God's change process that occurs in the lives of believers. This is what occurs after salvation. Many people think it happens the other way around! As we grow in Christ, bible knowledge is not enough. Jesus is concerned about transformation. Here's how it happens…Change begins on the inside. The word “transformed” is related to the word “metamorphosis.” We all remember being in school and learning the process of metamorphosis that occurs when a caterpillar becomes a butterfly or a tadpole becomes a frog. It's a gradual change on the inside that produces a todal transformation on the outside. When a caterpillar has been changed into a butterfly, it becomes what God always intended it to be.1 John 3:2 – “Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known…” John is talking about our future when we are with the Lord in Heaven, but it is also true in this life. God is in the transformation business!Change is a process. All of us tonight are works-in-progress. We are not finished. We are not glorified. We are not perfect. We are not completed. We are all under construction. Construction sites are noisy and messy. Is your life noisy and messy? Sometimes it's hard to image what the final outcome will be. We are responsible though, to cooperate with the Holy Spirit. God's work in our lives is usually a steady, lifelong progress toward godliness. But we are responsible to discipline ourselves for the purpose of godliness.Change happens as our minds are renewed with the Word of God. It's only here that our thinking begins to changeToday's Challenge: Identify an area of your life God is wanting to change. The Holy Spirit is so faithful, I'm sure you already know which area he wants to work in. Surrender, cooperate, allow God to do his work. All we need is on the other side of surrounding our lives to God.Discussion Questions:Why does God change us from the inside out? What area of your life is God working to change?Do you have a story of how God has changed you?Recommended Resource: The Me I Want to Be: Becoming God's Best Version of You by John OrtbergVisit the website: 5MinuteDiscipleship.comFollow on social:Facebook.com/5minutediscipleshipInstagram.com/5minutediscipleshipClick here to learn how you can start your own podcast.
“Catch the foxes for us, the little foxes that spoil the vineyards” (Song of Solomon 2:15)Why do we compromise our beliefs, values, and convictions? We compromise because of comfort and convenience. We give into vices and weaknesses in our life. Others compromise because they're in conflict. They think they “deserve” something because of the pain they're in. Whether we realize it or not, areas of compromise will always become a decision of our character.King Solomon is a great example of this. (Have you read Proverbs?) Wise Solomon fell victim to the same temptation that the rest of us so often face: to compromise in what we think are small concerns or the "gray" areas. The danger in this kind of reasoning is that small compromises weaken character and over time, lead to major sins. Just as we can grow in character little by little, so we can drift away from God in the same way.Luke 16:10 – “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.”The power and ability to take a big stand happens because we have chosen to serve God in the little decisions we make every day. Your beliefs, values, and convictions will be tested. They may be tested even today. How do we prepare for this test?• Know your beliefs and convictionsExercise for your quiet time: What do I believe in? What do you stand for? What life decisions have you made as you have grown in your faith? What firmly held beliefs do you have based on the authority of God's Word. • Determine to honor God in the momentIt would be great to say, “I am going to honor God with this day.” How many have started a day that way, only to disappoint yourself later in the day. My prayer has shifted to, “God help me to honor you in the moment.”Let's purpose not to defile ourselves with ungodly choices and behaviors. Ask God to give you the desire and courage to live by your convictions. What I watch, what I listen to, what I put into my mind. I will not participate in this conversation. I don't like who I am when I am around that person.I've noticed that fear is often the cause of our compromise: fear of criticism, fear of rejection, or maybe the fear of loss. Remember, anything we may lose in this life because of our faith in Jesus, will be blessed abundantly by God.James 1:12 - Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.Today's Challenge: Identify an area of your life in which you have been tempted to compromise your beliefs, values, or convictions. Reaffirm you commitment to your beliefs. Ask God for strength to remain strong in Him.Discussion Questions:Name a few of your beliefs, values, or convictions? What threats our convictions and tempts us to compromise? What role does fear play in our temptation to compromise?Recommended Resource: The Daniel Dilemma: How to Stand Firm and Love Well in a Culture of Compromise by Chris HodgesVisit the website: 5MinuteDiscipleship.comFollow on social:Facebook.com/5minutediscipleshipInstagram.com/5minutediscipleshipClick here to learn how you can start your own podcast.
This principle runs throughout scripture: If you honor God, God will honor you. We often want to negotiate with God and say, “God if you'll do this for me, I'll do this for you, but it simply doesn't work that way.Daniel 1:8 - ““But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way.”Convictions guide our decisions and determine our character. To live a life that pleases God, we need strong biblical values. If you and I have a firm foundation on God's Word then we will be ready to face whatever challenges come your way.The temptation to compromise our biblical values is all around us. If you haven't faced it, you will. It often comes when we least expect it, so it's necessary for us to establish our convictions before the temptation arrives. Changing Daniel's name was insulting. Putting him through the Babylonian educational system was something that required Daniel to think clearly and to remember his convictions. However, changing the diet would actually defile Daniel. It would cause him to disobey God's Word. It was time to take a stand.I believe there is a battle going on for the minds and hearts of each one of us. There is a gradual conditioning that is taking place. We have to stand against this and the only way to do that is with God's Word.“Daniel resolved in his heart not to defile himself.” Verse 8 is the hinge point for the entire book of Daniel. It's a decision that impacted the rest of his life. The Babylonians were attempting to determine everything in his life. His name, his training, his culture, his identity, his food, and his occupation. But Daniel determined to honor God. Likewise, we live in a world that attempts to tell us what to believe, how to live, what is acceptable. We must gather the courage to decide to follow God's Word.Like Daniel we live in a perverse culture. We can follow his example. We do not have to compromise. We do not have to go with the flow. Challenge: Identify small compromises and surrender them to Jesus. Develop your own personal convictions based on the truth of God's WordDiscussion Questions:What is a biblical conviction? Why is it important to identify your convictions before you are tempted?Do small things really matter to God?Visit the website: 5MinuteDiscipleship.comFollow on social:Facebook.com/5minutediscipleshipInstagram.com/5minutediscipleshipClick here to learn how you can start your own podcast.

Are there particular emotions that trigger you? How can you combat those triggers when you are faced by them? Create a list of actions that will help you combat those emotional issues A lot of people struggle with weight. According to Health Data, some 160 million Americans are overweight or obese. According to the Centers For Disease Control, 2/3 of American adults are overweight or obese. Those numbers are depressing. We all gain weight in different ways. Some of us pack on the pounds as we get older, some people gain weight due to a health issue or an injury, while others eat the wrong things. Typically, we diet by eating less. We may exercise more as well, but our weight loss journey revolves entirely around diet and exercise. While that is a big part of weight loss, there is one aspect of it that we overlook. Our thoughts and behaviors play a major role in the challenge. Typically, we fall into a pattern of yo-yo dieting. We lose the weight, drop the diet, gain it back, and the cycle repeats itself ad nauseam. All of these common and unhealthy habits are acts of sabotage and they all come down to your mindset. A positive mindset, one that is pro weight loss will prompt you to make the right decisions, to make healthy choices. A positive mindset will help gear you toward success. Love them or hate them, screens are here to stay. But when it comes to our kids, how much screen time is too much? How do we know? What do the experts say? Are all children the same? There’s no doubt. Screen time is a hot topic. While many schools are handing out free laptops, parents worry that kids are missing out on all the benefits of analog learning and outdoor play. Are we being over-protective? Or is there legitimate cause for concern? Realistically, the answer is both YES and NO. We need to stop thinking about screen time as “good” or “bad” and start thinking about our family time in terms of priorities. Remember the jar analogy? If we try to shove a bunch of big rocks, small stones and sand into a jar all at once, it won’t work. Instead, we need to identify the big rocks, put them in place first, and then fit the small stuff in around them. It’s the same way with our time. What are the “big rocks” in your family? Sleep? Exercise? Work? Together time? We need to ask ourselves: Is screen time taking up too much space and replacing some of these big rocks in our family jar? Or is screen time just part of the sand, filling up the cracks around our most important priorities? This is the key to establishing healthy screen time habits in our homes. Today we will be discussing: 1. The impact of screens on children and families 2. The links between screen time and pornography 3. Screen time solutions we like I. SCREEN TIME AND THE FAMILY -We’re not against screens; we’re for smart screen use and pro-human connection -American Academy of Pediatrics & World Health Org recommendations: -Infants under 1 yr/18 mo): no screens -Ages 2 to 5: max 1 hour of high-quality programming -Ages 6+: consistent limits (shouldn’t replace sleep, physical activity and other healthy behaviors) -The upcoming generation, deemed the Glass Generation, is losing various skills because they are using screens rather than interacting in real life. Here are some examples: -Painting in real life vs. “painting” on a tablet: Screens actually do not develop fine motor, sensory, and interpersonal skills in the same way. -Playing dress-up in real life vs. digital avatars on a device: Digital dress-up is not the same as walking in heels, putting on clothes that are too big for you, talking with accents, and the pretend play the results from dressing like an imaginary character. -Talking vs. Texting: With text, we lose the subtleties of communication, like body language, facial expressions, eye contact, and vocal inflections. -An embarrassing photo captured by Melody’s toddler reveals the reality of a child growing up in the digital age: Mom on her laptop, toddler taking pictures with the iPhone, and a messy room where a child is entertaining himself while mom is busy. We are not too big to admit this is our reality too! And we know it’s not this way all the time. But we need to be aware of it. Let’s be sure to unplug and enjoy our kids! -Sociological effect vs psychological effect — The Big Disconnect by Catherine Steiner Adair -“… Nothing can match the power of our attention and our capacity to connect in affirming, loving, nourishing ways. Screens and tech cannot match it, but they can replace it—if we let it happen.” -Guidelines above focus on the formative years. Let’s consider what applies to tweens and teens. During these years, it’s more subjective. Are your teens mastering technology or becoming a slave to their phones/screens? Sleep! This is a BIG DEAL for teens. Don’t let screens replace sleep! (More in solutions.) -“‘We’re in the wild, wild, west era of the world wide web.’ This generation will lead us through it, help us become more settled and civilized in it.” II. SCREEN TIME AND PORNOGRAPHY -Simple math: More time on screens = more chance of exposure to inappropriate content -Too much time on screens sets us up for sex on screens -Screens in the middle of the night = risky behavior (nudes) -The Cardboard Butterfly Study: Porn is created to be more tantalizing and addictive than real people. The problem is, we can’t create real connections and healthy bonds with pixels and computers. -Pornography has to be part of the conversation from Day 1. Get Off the Fence, and talk to your kids! -What are we NOT doing/learning if we’re absorbed in our screens: Human Interaction, body language, listening skills. These skills are essential to thrive and should be mastered in adolescence. Communication via screens can make this task more challenging. Relationships are happening online … Do love and trust truly exist online? III. SCREEN TIME SOLUTIONS Replace Unhealthy Habits -Are you and your kids using tech like a big kid/adult pacifier? Is a screen your first choice to help you unwind when you’re stressed, to soothe you when you are angry or frustrated, or to entertain you when you’re bored? -Try to be purposeful about your screen time. Use it as a tool, rather than a coping mechanism. Don’t become a slave to your screens. Try to utilize them for practical needs--not psychological ones. -Identify patterns in your day where you turn to screens to fill a psychological need and try to replace those habits with healthier ones. For instance, if you usually go straight to your phone or TV to unwind after work or school, breaking that habit. Postpone your need for a screen for 20 minutes or so. Have a snack, read a book, take a walk, or talk to a family member about your day. Take control of your schedule. Don’t let your cravings for your tech take control of you! -Try to create some times or spaces in your home where devices are off limits. (Have you seen this PSA from #DeviceFreeDinner starring Will Ferrell?) -Get the screens out of the bedroom: video games, phones (This is not an attack on them or a punishment-- it’s protection) Put People First -Remember to put your priorities in order, and put people first: “People, Passions, Purpose” -This is not just a kid issue. -When your kids get home, acknowledge them, try to make eye contact or shout hello Create a Screen Time Plan with Your Family -Have a family meeting to set boundaries regarding screen time. Meet with your family regularly to keep your guidelines up to date, and to follow up with each other. (This might be monthly or quarterly for some families, or every six months for others--whatever works for you!) -Write down your goals and guidelines. Do an online search and you will find several templates to create a plan or contract. (See link list below.) -Here are some tips to consider as you meet together to create your family plan: -Don’t just focus on rules and regulations. This is not a smack down--it’s a team effort. Focus on the positive, and have fun together! -In Melody’s family, they begin the process by listing fun things they like to do as a family--both on and off screens -INVOLVE THE KIDS! We can’t stress this enough! Challenge: Identify one unhealthy pattern in your family regarding screen time and replace it with a healthy one. Happy Tuesday! Today we talk about researching your customer traits. By identifying 4 or 5 customer demographics and determining other businesses that cater to them, you can go to some of these businesses and find out some of the things that they are doing to build relationships with them and keep them coming back. Identifying different groups that you would like to focus on is only the first step. Determining how you can appeal to their needs is where the relationship can grow. THE CHALLENGE: Identify 4-5 groups of people that you would like to better connect with. Find 3-4 businesses that cater to each of these groups. Pick 2 businesses from each group and go to them and experience what the business has to offer. (Chucky Cheese can be one!) Notice how they use their experience to build the relationship and continue it over a long period of time. (Lifetime Value of the Customer) Apply some of these things to your golf facility. Then email your results at jrockhold@pga.com I can't wait to hear some of the results! Also, check out the FIND THE GREEN BLOG!(

It’s that time of the week again - time for another episode of The Retirement Answer Man featuring your very own Retirement Answer Man, Roger Whitney (that’s me). On this episode I’m going to introduce you to the concept of what is being called the “sharing economy” (in case you didn’t know what it was already), and give you some tips about how you can take the steps to utilize the various aspects of the sharing economy in your retirement years. I think you’re going to find this episode to be chock full of great, actionable stuff that you can use. So be sure you take the time to listen. The sharing economy is here. Are you willing to be a part of it? Do you know what the sharing economy is? It’s the idea that people with excess resources (like a spare room, an empty garage, or even an extra seat in your car) make those resources available to others who have a need for that resource on a temporary basis. I believe that there are many, many opportunities for those moving into their retirement years to supplement their retirement income and build a better life. If you’re curious what’s possible in your situation, you’ll be surprised by the things I chat about with my friend Glenn, from the Casual Capitalist. You could get income from things you already have that you’re not using. One of the big concerns for those who are moving into retirement is whether they will have adequate income for the expenses it will take to live a comfortable and happy life. Today’s episode is focused on ways that retirees can utilize the sharing economy to build new avenues of income using things they already own or possess. You could rent out your car, a spare room in your home, extra storage space, or even drive people around your area for a fee. You can find out about many of the opportunities out there on this episode of The Retirement Answer Man. The sharing economy could help you stay connected to people during retirement. While more and more Baby Boomers are working within the sharing economy to build their income, many of them are finding an unexpected benefit: they are enjoying the relationships they are having with people they serve. It’s a surprising way that many are keeping themselves engaged in society and out of their homes, avoiding the danger of becoming isolated and lonely. Today’s guest on The Retirement Answer Man is Glenn, from the Casual Capitalist and he’s got loads of great information to share about what the sharing economy is, how it works, and what you can do to get involved for the sake of increasing your income and even building new relationships during your retirement years. Interested? Be sure you listen. Would you like some simple, actionable retirement tips sent to your inbox every Saturday?
