As an artist, DJ and producer hailing from Chicago's notorious South Side community, Elektrohorse is no stranger to the struggles of the common man and woman. Despite his humble beginnings, he has always been driven by the ideal that in America, hard work and dedication are the keys to success. This dedication to achievement has created a multitude of opportunities for Elektrohorse, including collaborations with some of the industry's top talent (Will.I.Am, Nicki Minaj, Cowboy Troy, Willie jones and Timbaland among others). Although he's been blessed with continuous success throughout his career, Elektrohorse has never forgotten his humble, Midwestern roots. As a result, he formed his own movement, “The Party Don't Care”. As founder of TPDC, he has always been deeply committed to promoting messages of love, unity and peace. It was this commitment to the aforementioned principles that fostered the inspiration for his most heartfelt record to date, S.T.O.M.P. He is the primary practitioner of a hybrid sound he calls CDM — country dance music. The style seamlessly fuses country instrumentation with funk, hip-hop and electronic dance beats — a combination that has fueled mainstream country hits for years. It's topflight entertainment, whose purpose mostly seems to be sheer enjoyment. Still, despite the fun and frolic in his songs and videos, there's a serious side to Elektrohorse. “I really see music as a way of bringing people together, of being a source of unity,” Elektrohorse tells the Scene. “When I came to Nashville, I found the right atmosphere of cooperation and musical interest, and it's proven the right move.” Click HERE to read the bio in its entirety.
Texas rapper chats about career and new music In the mid 2000's, Cowboy Troy defined a new era in country music with country rap -- or hick hop, as he has coined it. The Texas born rapper released Loco Motive in 2005 with "I Play Chicken With The Train" landing in the Top 50 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart. It paved the way for a genre that some may argue is unrecognizable today with its hip hop and R&B loops. Cowboy Troy was a member of the MuzikMafia (Musically Artistic Friends In Alliance) which was founded by Big & Rich's John Rich and Big Kenny Alphin in 2001. The collective contained a variety of outliers in the Nashville community who mixed styles and genres. MuzikMafia grew a vast fanbase as they often hosted late night jam sessions around Nashville that included a variety of guest performers like Jon Bon Jovi, Kid Rock, Jewel, and others, to name a few. We spoke with Cowboy Troy after the 2022 CMA Fest to chat about his career, new music and what's ahead. Full audio is streaming above. This week things get oddly country as Branden and Jodie go through some hick hop to see what is more infuriating; a song with a depressing rhythm, out of place solos and virtually every stereotype in the lyrics. Or a song that really has no substance to it and may be on the show just to piss people off. Frank starts off the show with a crick in his neck. You know who can relate!? COWBOY TROY!!! Also, Frank made the mistake of saying we needed more friends on the show, and that brought out the crazies like Laughing John, Eagle, and Pirate Willie to name a few and add to the bad jokes and rim shots. Aaaand breaking news! Crazy chicks are better in bed according to the latest obvious study. A great talk with country music star Cowboy Troy Coleman about his life on the road, balancing work/life commitments, family life and diversification in the music/entertainment business. “It’s kind of that gypsy lifestyle” A six-foot five-inch, hick-hop artist is going to get a response, and Cowboy Troy is okay with the strong reactions and endless questions. “I have crazy intentions,” he says with a grin. But anyone who thinks that the Cowboy Troy experience ends there, doubts his country credentials, or is inclined to dismiss him as a novelty, is in for quite a surprise. “People have different paths,” Troy says. “I’m not going to apologize for my music, because this is who I am. I didn’t just wake up one morning, put on a cowboy hat, and get a gig rapping on a country album. You don’t do something for 15 years on a lark.” Cowboy Troy rapped his way into the country mainstream on the first cut of Big & Rich’s 2004 debut Horse Of A Different Color. And while his admonition to “let go of all your preconceived notions” certainly wasn’t the first time elements of rap had been incorporated into country, it was the boldest statement yet. Explaining the journey that placed Troy Coleman at this unlikely intersection is as complicated as explaining the evolution of American culture. At the same time it’s as simple as the story of a kid from Texas who did what all kids do–he soaked up the world around him. Troy spent his childhood in Ft. Worth, where his dad took him to rodeos and stock shows. “We’d listen to Willie Nelson, Jerry Reed, Charlie Daniels, Kenny Rogers, and other artists who were getting airplay on the adult contemporary stations at that time,” Troy says. “I didn’t realize it was country music, I just knew it was what my parents listened to before they went to work in the morning.” Troy spent his high school years in Dallas and collegiate years in Austin, Texas at the University of Texas. In addition to solo releases [Loco Motive (2005), Black in the Saddle (2007), and Demolition Mission (2009)], Troy has spent time on TV. He’s been a part of the ESPN College Gameday video intro along with Big & Rich since the 2006 football season. He also served as co-host for USA Network’s Nashville Star in 2006 and 2007. Most recently Troy performed on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars on the final episode of 2012 Spring season. His appearance in Big & Rich’s Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy video, as well as his own I Play Chicken With the Train and Hick Chick videos remind viewers of his “party starter” nature. Troy knows he’s challenging conventional thinking about what country music is, but expects that his music will find its place. “I’ve never been like everybody else and it wouldn’t do me any good to try,” he says. “Some people are going to love it and some are going to hate it, which is probably how it should be because it means they’re talking.” The way Troy sees it, “innovation is a tradition, not a trend or secondary option…authenticity comes in the commitment.” Troy calls Warner Music Nashville his recording home. His latest installment of music, “King of Clubs” was released March 11, 2014. He released his 7th studio album this year called “Laugh With Me”. Troy speaks extensively about his calculated plan to diversify, as the industry constantly changes. Troy also talks about the work/life balances of traveling while being a husband and father of triplets. Troy is one of the good guys and I know he appreciates your follows, comments and likes on his various social media pages.

Barely escaping from ACM week 2016 in Las Vegas, the guides caught up with Shawn Pennington. Shawn has a career that spans all walks of vocations in the music business. Shawn's intro in the world of music and even what pushed him in that direction was encouraged from the most unlikely of places. Much like how this podcast was formed (musicians complaining about their lives on the back of a cruise ship), Shawn made the decision to move to Nashville to pursue a career of playing country music. Shawn spent his early country music career playing for top female vocalist, Sara Evans. Like most players in a band, his position also led to management positions. After realizing for himself that playing music wasn’t where the money was at he jumped on the artist management side of things. While at Dale Morris & Associates, Shawn used his talents and knowledge as a musician, producer, production manager, and artist manager to successfully develop the careers and brands of Gretchen Wilson, Big & Rich, John Rich, Cowboy Troy, the MuzikMafia, Kellie Coffey, and Julio Iglesias Jr. Shawn soon joined the management team of Broken Bow Records Management as the Senior Vice President of Artist Development. Shawn then took the platinum selling band Parmalee and the Grammy-nominated duo Thompson Square to new heights. The music industry is all about taking risks, and in 2016 after vacating his position at Broken Bow Shawn jumped head first in his newest entrepreneurial venture, Pennington Entertainment. Brandon and Jason really go dumpster diving in this conversation of the gritty details of the music business. Shawn is a great resource of all things business and your guides took advantage of Shawn’s life story. Topics discussed? The change in the climate of marketing an artist, where should the money come from if not royalties, and saving songwriters and publishers in a streaming world. This episode is for the day dreamer that knows how to hustle, but maybe doesn’t know where to start. For the player wondering if there is something else they could do in the industry. For the titan of industry that is planning world domination. Shawn’s story is full of ups and downs, twists and turns, and great music industry stories from even today’s biggest country music names. Jason’s only question for Shawn was…How Can I Meet Sara?!?! Thanks to Fat Bottom Brewing for taking the lead in supplying a good time.
