77. Pele: Coming to America

Past Our Prime

Growing up in the 70's, soccer was barely a footnote when it came to the sports culture here in the States. The North American Soccer League was trying to compete with the other leagues, but the game just didn't have the appeal that it does in much of the world. It lacked the star power that other sports had. Until…   In 1975, the New York Cosmos signed Edson Arantes do Nascimento, the Brazilian superstar known across the globe simply as… Pele. That's right, Pele was coming to America… North America, NYC, The Big Apple… and with it, soccer was about to experience a boom in the U.S. Michael Lewis was just a young sports reporter looking to get a beat covering one of the four sports he grew up loving… Baseball, football, basketball, and hockey… Soccer wasn't on that list. Not even close. But the young scribe was given a shot to cover the Rochester Lancers of the NASL… and his career and life were never the same. Over 50 years later, he's written 9 books on the sport, including Soccer for Dummies and Alive and Kicking: The incredible but true story of the Rochester Lancers.  That opportunity to cover the NASL allowed Michael to get a firsthand look at what he calls the biggest “BANG” for soccer in the United States: the arrival of Pele. He tells us how the global sensation arrived with no ego as an ambassador to the sport that saw him win 3 World Cups for Brazil in 1958, 1962, and 1970. He went from the pinnacle of the sport to a fledgling league, and did everything he could to bring attention to the sport he was famous for playing… Famous everywhere except maybe in the States…. But that was about to change. Pele was a man of the people, and that was apparent everywhere he went. He would talk with the guys in the kitchen of the restaurant as he was about to be introduced at his inaugural press conference in America. He would sign autographs for hours and give the jersey off his back to fellow players. In 1977, he led the Cosmos to the Soccer Bowl, winning in the quarterfinals in front of almost 78,000 fans at Giants Stadium before winning the Soccer Bowl in Oregon three weeks later. After the match, Brazilian journalists on hand to cover their famous countrymen carried him on their shoulders and paraded him around the locker room in jubilation at the conclusion of the superstar's incredible career. Michael Lewis was in that locker room and says almost 50 years later it's still the most amazing postgame celebration he's ever witnessed. Next summer, Lewis will cover his 14th World Cup… and when the finals of that tournament are played at Met Life Stadium, right where Giants Stadium used to stand, his career will have come full circle to when a young reporter was given a beat he didn't really want… and set him on a course that changed his life and gave him the opportunity to cover the greatest player and ambassador the sport has ever known… Pele. In the kickoff message of the Wisdom for Dummies series, Pastor Bronson Stewart unpacks the key difference between wisdom and knowledge. While knowledge is about information and facts, wisdom is about how we live—making decisions that reflect God's heart and truth. Pastor Bronson emphasizes that true wisdom doesn't come from books or intellect, but from a relationship with God. He explores how the Bible invites us to seek wisdom like treasure, reminding us that God generously gives it to those who ask. This message challenges us to pursue wisdom that transforms our lives, not just knowledge that fills our minds.

Today, we're talking about Iran, Israel, America, and whether World War III is actually happening- like, for real this time.Topics include:• Why the CIA fumbled the geopolitical bag in 1953• Why Iran went from miniskirts to mandatory hijabs overnight• What Hezbollah actually is• How Israel and Saudi Arabia are basically sneaky-linking• What a “proxy war” is and why America won't log off• Why every time we say “stability,” we really mean “oil”• And how this whole mess is lowkey sponsored by Lockheed MartinAlso: underground raves in Tehran, religious trauma, and the fact that yes- Iran and Israel are basically sending each other nukes in the group chat.By the end of this episode, you'll know who hates who, who funds who, and who's probably going to start WW3 - and you won't even need a PhD or a Pentagon badge to understand it.Thanks so much for listening and supporting the show! 285. Creating a Multi-Million Dollar Franchise Business Out of Joy with Rhea Lana Riner

The Game On Girlfriend Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 17, 2025 34:56

When I tell you you can start a business out of anything, do you have like an internal eye roll? Today's guest started a business out of her living room. You can start a company simply because you want to help others. It really is that simple, but simple doesn't mean easy. Rhea Lana Riner is the CEO and founder of Rhea Lana's Children Consignment Events, a national franchise with 120 locations in 26 states. What started as a simple clothing swap in her living room has evolved into a multi-million-dollar business. Listen for the moments of courage – we're talking about the courage to start small and try again when something doesn't work exactly as planned the first time. It takes courage to keep going when you're not sure what the next step will look like. Rhea Lana was a stay-at-home mom who grew up in a military family. She was an introvert and, according to her, not someone you'd call a leader. “There was a season in our life where my husband left the corporate world and went into nonprofit work. We moved to another state, and I had these three small children under the age of five,” says Rhea Lana. She loved the hunt for secondhand shopping. However, the experiences with secondhand shopping weren't great at that time, ranging from garage sales to consignment stores – Rhea Lana felt there had to be a better way with more accountability. She got 11 women to sign up as consignors. It was a win. But no shoppers came to her first sale. She asked for a second chance and got to work on grassroots invitations. She printed flyers and made yard signs. “I wanted each mom that was selling her things with me; I wanted her to be able to see exactly what sold and exactly how much so that there would be no questions of just integrity of what happened.” You really can start with nothing and turn it into something. As women we're so creative; we generate idea after idea. It's essential that we find joy in what we do in business, and we don't have to undertake huge, risky ventures. It can be moment by moment. Rhea Lana says for that first sale, expectations were low. She remembers when she made $200; it was a win. She went out and bought a fancy purse – the first new thing she'd bought for herself in a long time. “Because all the money that came in, it went for the kids, or the bills, or the house payment. And I do think that's what women do experience,” says Rhea Lana. “We tend to put ourselves last. And so when I did this little business, all of a sudden, Of course, there was some tension.” She had to spend money but also felt the freedom to buy for herself, which was motivating. She says that the push for growth helped her narrow her focus to grow and increase her earnings. Her business grew gradually with each event. After working for a few years, Rhea Lana realized she was making in one event what a friend made in a year. “It was just part of the journey of probably giving me the push I needed to kind of take that next step towards franchising.” She didn't have the money to hire a consultant; instead, her sister helped her test an event in another community. She read "Franchising for Dummies". “It just kind of felt manageable. And, sure, there's a level of risk, but just a small amount. And we didn't know if anybody would buy it. I had no idea.” For some women, chasing their dreams or finding their purpose in life is about being good at what they do. Success isn't cookie-cutter. Expanding into your joy and what truly makes you happy and trusting yourself to have the courage to take step after step -- that's a little bit different for everybody. As we arrive at Episode 423, we're celebrating 9 years of the Mom & Mind Podcast! I never imagined this possibility, but I'm so honored to share these profound stories and feature these helpful experts. I'm thankful to the real rockstars, every single listener. We continue to address every aspect of perinatal mental health, raising awareness and spreading a message of hope. Each person's journey of vulnerability, difficulty, and healing is important, and we hope that the insights and resources we share can help others. I'm excited to bring you another episode with Dr. Shoshana Bennett, the very first expert guest to appear on the podcast way back in 2016.  After two life-threatening bouts of postpartum illness, Dr. Shoshana Bennett helped pioneer the field of maternal mental health in the US. She founded Postpartum Assistance for Mothers in 1987, became president of California's Postpartum Health Alliance, and served as president of Postpartum Support International. Dr. Shosh is the author of Children of the Depressed, Postpartum Depression for Dummies, and Pregnant on Prozac. She co-authored Beyond the Blues: A Guide to Understanding and Treating Prenatal and Postpartum Depression. She created the first app for postpartum depression and is an executive producer of the documentary, Dark Side of the Full Moon. Dr. Shosh co-founded the Postpartum Action Institute, which is committed to promoting parental health. To date, she has helped over 20,000 new parents around the world through private consultations, teleclasses, conferences, webinars, and support groups.  Show Highlights: Intimacy is SO much more than “just sex.” Examples of intimacy and connection Barriers to intimacy include assumptions, lack of communication, taking each other for granted, and not showing love in various ways. A lack of appreciation leads to a battle over who's working harder and resentment. Dr. Shosh's advice to couples to “get more of what you need.” The importance of being respectful instead of snappy, critical, and nasty (“YOU are responsible for what comes out of your mouth, whether you are sleep-deprived or not.”) Dates are important and should not be “back-burnered.” (Hear Dr. Shosh's rules for dating when there is a new baby at home!) Anticipation of the next date is important! Get creative with physical intimacy! The key to intimacy is to approach a partner without complaining; we have to re-educate ourselves. Be intentional in your relationship. “Humor is golden and can help in difficult times.” (Laughing together adds to intimacy!) Resources: Connect with Dr. Shoshana Bennett:  Website Dr. Shosh's past Mom & Mind episodes: 2, 3, and 154 Books and the documentary: Children of the Depressed, Postpartum Depression for Dummies, Pregnant on Prozac, Beyond the Blues: A Guide to Understanding and Treating Prenatal and Postpartum Depression, and Dark Side of the Full Moon. Dive into a no-holds-barred conversation that shatters common myths about self-harm. Join host Gabe Howard and renowned psychologist and ADAA member expert Dr. Gillian C. Galen as they explore the intricate world of self-harm and emotional regulation. Delving into the neuroscience behind adolescent brain development and its impact on behavior, Dr. Galen explains why self-injurious behaviors are more prevalent during youth and how they evolve — or sometimes subside — in adulthood. They discuss the common reasons behind self-injury and why it's far more complex than the stereotypes we see in movies and media. They explore the surprising ways self-harm can signal deep emotional distress, reveal underlying trauma, and even affect relationships. Whether you've been directly affected or want to better understand the struggles of those you care about, this conversation is a must-listen. Special thanks to McLean Hospital for providing funding for today's episode. “If you see that somebody is self-injuring, it really means, like the level of distress that they are in and the difficulty, like the deficits in coping skills, like they're missing a set of coping skills is pretty profound, right. And you know, the consequences are pretty high. They don't have another skill. We're basically saying, stop self-injuring. What are they going to do with those emotions? What are they going to do with them? Clearly, if they had another way to manage them, they would. I've never met somebody that started self-injuring that has said I had other coping skills, but I chose this instead. Usually when they start self-injuring, it's because they don't know what else to do.” ~Gillian C. Galen, PsyD Our guest, Gillian C. Galen, PsyD, is a senior child and adolescent psychologist specializing in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). She is the director of training for the 3East continuum, an array of programs for teens that use DBT to target self-endangering behaviors and symptoms of borderline personality disorder. She has extensive experience diagnosing and treating adolescents and young adults who struggle with emotion dysregulation, anxiety, depression, trauma, and self-endangering behaviors, such as self-injury and suicidal behaviors. Dr. Galen has a particular interest in the use of mindfulness in the treatment of borderline personality disorder and psychiatric illnesses. She is the co-author of the books “Mindfulness for Borderline Personality Disorder: Relieve Your Suffering Using the Core Skill of Dialectical Behavior Therapy”, “Coping With BPD: DBT and CBT Skills to Soothe the Symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder”, and “DBT for Dummies.” Our host, Gabe Howard, is an award-winning writer and speaker who lives with bipolar disorder. He is the author of the popular book, "Mental Illness is an Asshole and other Observations," available from Amazon; signed copies are also available directly from the author. Gabe is also the host of the "Inside Bipolar" podcast with Dr. Nicole Washington. Gabe makes his home in the suburbs of Columbus, Ohio. Tax talk without the snooze-fest! Jackie rewinds to her own FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) journey: the divorce-day "401(k) gap" that lit her savings rocket, supersizing her HSA past $200,000, and hitting FI at 49 with a 40% savings rate. Expect plain-English breakdowns, plenty of ‘there are no dumb questions' crowd chat, and Jackie's trademark mix of CFP level and girlfriend realness. Topics for the series include: Age-band tax checklist (pre-55, 55-65, 65-75, 75+) Separating "macro" worry (markets, policy) from micro action (what you control) Early withdrawal strategies  (Rule of 55/50, 72(t) / Equal Payments, HSAs, Affordable Care Act/Tax Credits, Brokerage Accounts, ect) Tax Minimizing tips during normal retirement (Social Security, Medicare Surcharge, Increased Standard Deduction, Balancing account types) Later in life considerations (RMDs, Qualified Charitable Distribution, Inheritances, ect) This is part one of a two-part series and the second part will be aired next Wednesday (6/18/25). Kennedy has removed the COVID shots from the CDC recommendations for children and pregnant women aren't telling the full story.First and foremost, at the writing of this newsletter, according to the CDC Website - the recommendations ARE STILL UP. So they even technically removed them yet. Moreover, the wording of their announcement states that the CDC is removing the recommendation for ‘healthy children and healthy pregnant women'. This is NOT a full removal and it could result in worse outcomes. Recommending the poison shots for ‘unhealthy' or high risk pregnant women and children is reckless and dangerous because the immune compromised are at FAR GREATER risk for severe vaccine injury and death. And lastly, over 170 million Americans would fit the CDC's official definition of ‘high risk' (aka (unhealthy) making the change inapplicable to a vast population and what's worse is that pregnancy itself is listed as a ‘high risk' condition … meaning the recommendation stands for ALL pregnant women as they ALL fit the definition of high risk.Today we welcome Dr. Naomi Wolf on the show to discuss this topic and last weeks bombshell testimony on the devastating toxicity of the COVID mRNA shot delivered at the Unites States Senate. Many of the shocking revelations were discovered by Daily Clout's volunteer team in 2021 and 2022 and were compiled in the seminal publication ‘The Pfizer Papers', yet surprisingly most of the speakers did not attribute their testimony to the team of researchers! It is also unfathomable that the hearing wasn't attended, promoted or even mentioned by leadership in HHS or the majority of the MAHA movement and even more devastating that the shots remain on the market in the USA for ANY human.LOTS to talk about today with Naomi! A lot of technically skilled professionals hit a wall when the job becomes less about solving problems and more about leading people. It's not always about what you know, but how you show up. Communication, emotional awareness, and the ability to navigate team dynamics often feel like foreign territory after years of focusing on logic and precision. But without that shift, growth tends to stall—no matter how good you are at the work itself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XnazHK1dUc Leo MacLeod is a leadership coach who helps technical pros build emotional intelligence and lead with empathy. He's the author of Coaching and Mentoring for Dummies and From the Ground Up, drawing on decades of experience. Through his business, Training Coaching Pie, he designs practical, people-first training that actually sticks. Today, he speaks about the role of emotional clarity in leadership, setting real goals, and why listening well is more important than knowing all the answers. He believes that strong leadership starts with understanding yourself and genuinely connecting with others. Stay tuned! Resources: Leo MacLeod Website Connect with Leo MacLeod on LinkedIn
