Send us a textForget the assumption that modern neurology only thrives where resources are abundant. We sit down with Dr. Daniel Ontaneda and Dr. Nelson Maldonado—two Ecuadorian neurologists driving change across Latin America—to explore how world-class care is built on clinical craft, cultural fluency, and relentless advocacy. From bedside localization when the MRI is down to expanding stroke thrombolysis from a handful of cases to hundreds, their stories reveal a system where expertise is abundant but access can lag—and how that gap is closing. We retrace Dan's journey from Quito to leading-edge MS research, and Nelson's decision to return home to build services few believed possible. Together they unpack what training looks like across the region, including long-format medical school, rural service, and residencies that demand deep exam skills. We compare public and private systems in Ecuador, break down why patients often want clear directives rather than options, and examine how cultural beliefs and language shape adherence. The conversation digs into MS treatment in low- and middle-resource settings, the rise of highly effective disease-modifying therapies, and the pragmatic use of cost-effective options like rituximab. The episode also exposes a hidden threat: substandard medications entering through price-first procurement, undermining both acute care and chronic neurologic disease. Yet the momentum is real—regional MS registries, imaging collaborations that move faster than heavily regulated systems, and conferences that bring neurocritical care and MS experts under one roof. Even subspecialists practice broadly, treating Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, headache, and ICU cases in the same week, sharpening an exam-first mindset that delivers results. If you care about global neurology, stroke systems of care, MS access, and the practical ethics of delivering evidence-based treatment under constraints, this conversation will challenge assumptions and spark ideas. Juliana Garcia started climbing the mountains of Ecuador at fifteen years old. Since then, she has climbed and guided many mountains and big walls throughout the Andes, Peru,Bolivia, Colombia, as well as in Pakistan, Alaska, United States and the Alps. She became the first female Latin American certified IFMGA mountain guide and served as the President of the Ecuadorian Association of guides for 6 years. She is currently one of the instructors of the Ecuadorian guiding school ESGUIM. Juliana is also a Patagonia Brand Ambassador and an AIARE Avalanche Education Instructor and POW ambassador. She served as “board member” at the IFMGA for six years and became the first female and non-European to occupy that position. Recently she was recognized by the IFMGA as an “honorary member”. Juliana got her “ski guide” diploma this spring 2025 in U.S by the AMGA. She became the first female Latin American to obtain this status as a full IFMGA. She is passionate aboutlearning and sharing.Episode Intro:Dear listeners of the Female Guides Requested Podcast, welcome back! I am your host, Ting Ting, from Las Vegas. Today's guest is a true trailblazer in the international guiding community: Juliana Garcia. Juliana is an Ecuadorian mountain guide whose career is a series of "firsts". She was the first woman to pass the rigorous aspirant exams in the Bolivian system and became the first female IFMGA-certified guide in all of Latin America. Juliana's influence extends far beyond the technical terrain of the Andes. She served two terms as the president of the Ecuadorian Mountain Guides Association, where she was instrumental in bringing their national school up to international standards. She also shattered glass ceilings at the highest level of the profession as the first woman ever to sit on the board of the IFMGA. At the time of this interview, Juliana was based in Washington state and was in the final stages of a multi-year journey to become a certified ski guide—a discipline she picked upas an adult to bring high-level snow science and safety back to her home community in Ecuador. (And to no one's surprise, she passed!) Now, let's dive into Juliana's inspiring life journey—her transition from volcanoes to the Cascades, the power of mentorship, and why she believes the most important tool a guide can have is the ability to listen.Links:Her Place in the Mountains – Patagonia StoriesJuliana's Instagram page – julianagarciaguideQuotes:I'm just a person that loves to be outside, loves to be in the mountains. yeah, that's it, I think. When I became part of the board… I became the first female to sit at that board ever. That blew my mind. I was like, ‘You kidding me?I knew that that discipline exist… and I was like, what? I'm going to learn how to ski as an adult. I'm going to learn a lot of our snow science and I'm going to do it.I love sharing how people put themselves outside of their limits, sometimes and they do it and they found joy doing it. I love to be part of that journey of other people.I think we are really good on listening. I think we are really good on perceiving what is going on in our surroundings when we are guiding… and I think we're really good on not being ashamed to turn around.I don't care anymore. I don't need to prove anything to anybody… I realized… I was pushing myself for no reason… no one is going to pushing me… I'm doing my own path. What we can do to help is just to choose to be uncomfortable for a moment in our daily life… We need to choose in our daily life things that we can do that support the energy overall.

Artist Joaquin Stacey joins Javier Proenza for a conversation on art, identity, and cultural formation shaped by migration. Born in Ecuador and raised in Miami before relocating to Los Angeles for his MFA at Otis College of Art and Design, Stacey reflects on how geography, language, and institutional training inform his practice. The discussion moves through painting, performance, and installation, with particular attention to Catholic iconography, mestizaje, diaspora, and the contradictions of living in the United States while remaining connected to Ecuador. Stacey also describes his use of fermentation and sourdough as both material and conceptual frameworks, challenging linear notions of time, labor, and artistic process.

Episode 216 of The Adventure Podcast is Part Two of the conversation with Charlie Reynolds. If you've not listened to the first half, go back to episode 215. We start this episode where left off, on a canoe in the waves after a brutal storm. Matt and Charlie continue unpacking his extraordinary journey, and several near misses, through South America. They dig into what those moments taught Charlie about instinct, trust, risk, and why some of his most meaningful insights came from silence rather than adrenaline. Charlie speaks openly about the emotional crash that followed his expedition. The hollow feeling of coming home, how identity becomes intertwined with extreme experiences, and why the aftermath can sometimes be the hardest to navigate. It's an episode packed full of adventure - from crossing an abandoned railway bridge with a no-fall zone, to accidentally befriending illegal gold miners, being robbed at knifepoint while camped in the mountains, and spending hours stuck in volcanic mud between two enormous Ecuadorian volcanoes - its a ride and a half. If Part 1 was about the catalyst that launched him, Part 2 is the proof that once Charlie started chasing uncertainty, the world kept handing him more.Chapter Breakdown00:00:00-00:05:00: Charlie arrives exhausted in Bogotá, sleeps for days, and rebuilds his bike setup before launching into the second half of the journey.00:12:50-00:15:25: He describes arriving in Colombia soaked, gear ruined.00:22:07-00:24:50: Charlie tells Matt about riding across a terrifying abandoned railway viaduct - narrow, unsupported, rattling, and suspended high above a Colombian river.00:31:04-00:33:51: He recounts being approached by armed miners who ended up asking for drone shots, following him on Instagram, and turning what could have been a dangerous situation into a strangely wholesome encounter.00:34:14-00:36:35: Riding south, he meets Diego, who gives him a list of spicy routes, including one that would become one of his biggest “struggle-fests” of the whole expedition.00:36:35-00:38:35: Charlie explains the notorious volcanic mud route.00:40:15-00:42:33: He describes camping in freezing marshland beneath Chimborazo, eating frozen tuna-rice for breakfast, and spending hours trying to haul his 200kg bike up a slope.00:46:04-00:48:28: With an injured leg and almost no energy, Charlie sends a single InReach message home.00:49:52-00:52:14: He recounts being robbed by men who spent hours at his tent demanding money.00:59:38-01:01:32: A detour with a friend ends in them burying a rental car deep in a canyon01:07:16-01:08:24: As he reaches southern South America, the adventure becomes less intense, but not less meaningful.01:08:42-01:11:47: Worried about losing momentum and returning to rent-paying normality, Charlie impulsively buys an old expedition truck in Quebec and limps it across North America with almost no money.01:11:47-End; Charlie reflects on how the journey has rewired him.For extra insights from the worlds of adventure, exploration and the natural world, you can find The Adventure Podcast+ community on Substack. In particular a recent 38 day general strike, and the popular rejection of a recent referendum  including measures which would have allowed the US to build military bases in Ecuador and cut public funding for political parties. Our guest contextualizes the current US-backed narco-military regime lead by Daniel Noboa. And she talks about the broader revenge campaign against former Pink Tide governments like Ecuador and Bolivia, now led by right wing forces. She discusses how the tactics we're seeing across Latin America against left-leaning governments, and the disappearances and assassinations of organizers, mark a return of the CIA's Operation Condor tactics. Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"Right from the first listen, I was struck by the sheer variety and strangeness of the natural sounds of the Ecuadorian forest. Some of them already seemed like electronic sounds in their own right. " I therefore approached my processing by keeping the original recording unaltered and superimposing layers of electronic material that respectfully sought to integrate and blend in as much as possible with the original soundscape. "In short, they were minimal, liminal, and camouflaged contributions, disguised as natural sounds." Yasuni biosphere reserve, Ecuador reimagined by David Rossato.

Shares in Taiwan shed more than 500 points Friday as a sell-off was sparked by a plunge on U.S. markets overnight amid renewed worries that the U.S. Federal Reserve has turned hawkish toward its rate-cut cycle. Shakira BioSnap a weekly updated Biography.Shakira's week has been a whirlwind of headlines spanning family drama, international touring, business innovation, and high-profile entertainment, crystallizing her status as both global pop icon and relentless entrepreneur. The rumor mill spun into overdrive when Catalan outlets claimed Shakira's 94-year-old father, William Mebarak, took a severe turn for the worse, alarming fans and sending social media buzzing with concern. Yet sources close to Shakira assured ¡HOLA! Magazine that these claims were exaggerated. Mebarak is not hospitalized but is instead comfortably resting at his Miami home, under attentive care. Shakira's calm is reflected in her decision to press on with her wildly successful Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran world tour across Latin America, suggesting the family situation, while delicate, is under control.Touring, however, has delivered its own mix of triumph and turbulence. Just days ago in Quito, Shakira wrapped up her Ecuador tour with what ISNA News called a “modest and subdued” concert, noting many fans left disappointed by the low energy and scaled-back production. This performance, according to ISNA and 24TV, highlights a trend of waning demand in certain markets: Ecuadorian authorities even canceled some planned shows citing tepid ticket sales and safety concerns, a rare hiccup for an artist accustomed to sold-out arenas. Concert industry analysts, including The Nation, nevertheless underscore her overall global dominance, noting she was just crowned Billboard's Global Touring Icon after her tour grossed historic numbers this year. Her next major stop is Estadio Nacional in Lima, Peru, scheduled for November 15.Balancing artistry with business savvy, Shakira is making headlines for teaming up with AIR Shop, a Moca Network project backed by Animoca Brands, to put Shakira concert ticketing on blockchain rails. According to a release via PRNewswire, this move lets fans buy tickets worldwide and earn digital rewards, marking a new era in real-world blockchain entertainment transactions and potentially reshaping ticketing industry standards. On the entertainment front, Shakira is captivating younger audiences as Disney just unveiled her new music video “Zoo” for Zootopia 2, where she also reprises her vocal role as Gazelle. The song, co-written with Ed Sheeran, is poised for a Disney+ and theatrical push, likely boosting her cross-generational appeal.Meanwhile, gossip sites like The Auto Wire report on Shakira's splashy Miami lifestyle upgrade: she reportedly spent around $15 million relocating her collection of luxury cars from Spain post-divorce, a story eagerly devoured by fans online. All told, even as one of her shows underwhelmed in Ecuador, Shakira remains firmly in the global spotlight, mixing music, business moves, family loyalty, and pure celebrity spectacle—her recent trajectory revealing both the risks and rewards of operating at the pinnacle of fame.Get the best deals https://amzn.to/3ODvOtaThis content was created in partnership and with the help of Artificial Intelligence AI

Song: Estrellitas Music by: Ana Lucia Divins   Notes: Singing this song of grief and the lifting of grief connected deeply with my heart this week. No matter what grief is in my heart at the moment, the wordless "O", followed by the shaping of Spanish words for sorrow, doubt, and fear as well as let go and little stars -- letting all the grief light the fire and then the sparks carry it away -- oh, it felt good to sing this. Soft and strong, velvet and spark, ache and motion. I'm grateful Ana Lucia gifted us this song to sing, and excited that once you've learned the core of the song with me, you get to sing all of it with her if you follow the Bandcamp link!    Songwriter Info: Music has been a lifelong companion for Ana Lucia Divins, who has witnessed its healing power and the strength of community connections. This journey led her to explore sound and therapeutic music studies. She is a Certified Music Practitioner by MHTP and a Holistic Voice Therapist with the British Academy of Sound Therapy. Since 2022, she has integrated healing music into her offerings, singing by patients' bedsides and sharing therapeutic music in the community for restoration and relaxation. In 2023, she received the Arts and Science Council Creative Renewal Fellowship and in 2024, the Arts and Science Council Artist Support Grant, enabling her to delve deeper into music's healing potential and produce new works. Ana Lucia's exploration of her voice has taken her to national and international workshops and retreats in Greece, Spain, the UK, and Colombia.  In the summer of 2024, Ana Lucia and Carlos Crespo, an Ecuadorian guitarist, released their debut healing music album, “Emerging,” in collaboration with other talented musicians. Available on all digital platforms, "Emerging" offers a deeply relaxing and uplifting sound bath of original new-age world music. A Word With You
Jesus In Their Language - #10093

A Word With You

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 17, 2025

My life was profoundly affected by the example of five American missionaries who died trying to get the Gospel to a Stone Age tribe in Ecuador who had never heard the name of Jesus. They were actually murdered by the tribe that was then known as the Aucas. We now know them as the Waoranis. Amazingly, the wife of one of those missionaries and the sister of another actually went to the tribe that had killed their loved ones to tell them about Jesus. Today, some of the murderers of the missionaries are pastors of the Waorani church. It's an amazing story. I had the unforgettable privilege a few years ago of going to the Ecuadorian jungle to tape a radio program about what happened there. And I met Mincaye, one of the killers, one of the pastors. I learned that those missionary women had difficulty translating the Bible into the native language because this tribe literally had no word for or even concept for "forgive." But the message somehow had gotten through to Mincaye. Here's what he said: "What we did to those missionaries was a terrible thing. But one day soon I will see them in heaven because Jesus has washed our hearts." I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Jesus In Their Language." A spiritual rescuer had come to people to whom the word "forgive" meant nothing. But God's messenger to them did what effective missionaries have always done. She found a way to say it in words the people could understand. You know, we can do no less for the spiritually dying people around us. Obviously, the need to translate Christ's message is hard to miss in a foreign setting where there is a clearly different linguistic language. But the need to translate the Jesus-story is easy to miss when our neighbors and friends speak that same linguistic language we do, but they speak a different cultural language. The words of our Christian "tribe" simply have no meaning, or the wrong meaning, to the lost "tribe" next to us. Many lost people assigned to us by God have no better understanding of "born again," or "saved," or "accepting Christ," or "sin" than Mincaye did of "forgive." In our word for today from the Word of God, we discover one big reason thousands of people from all over the world came to Jesus in the first outreach ever held by the Christian Church. It was Jerusalem, it was Pentecost, and according to Acts 2:6, "Each one heard them (that is the apostles) speaking in his own language." Now that was a special miracle from God, but it underscores that people must hear Christ's message in a language they can understand, which our church language - which I call Christianese - is not. Maybe you've been transmitting the Good News about Jesus and getting little or no response. Could it be they're stumbling over your vocabulary? You can't just transmit the Good News; you have to translate it into everyday, non-religious words. In Jesus' parable of the four soils, three of which produced little or no good harvest, we see the major difference between those three soils and the soil that produced great fruit. In each case, Jesus explains that "this is the man who hears the word." But where there was a great harvest, Jesus said, "This is the man who hears the word (and here's the one difference) and understands it" (Matthew 13:23). We've got life-or-death information we have to deliver. We cannot afford to have our lost family and friends miss it because we said it in words they don't understand. It's time to move beyond the comfort of our Christianese to communicate the message people cannot afford to miss. The words we use could be decisive for each of us in our personal rescue mission for Jesus. You're God's missionary where you are. If you make the effort to translate the Good News into the language of the person who needs it, you could be part of a life-giving miracle!

Her father, a doctor in the jungle, would return with stories from indigenous peoples that sparked her lifelong fascination with health, spirituality, and tradition. She went on to explore African-influenced practices like Candomblé in Brazil, connect with northern indigenous communities in Canada, and reflect on the Russian superstitions and esotericism that shaped her upbringing. We talk about the renaissance of indigenous wisdom and psychedelics. For Natalia, true healing comes through inner work, supported by the role of community, something all spiritual traditions share, and something she finds sorely lacking in Western culture, where people often suffer in isolation. Our conversation also explores her journey as an entrepreneur navigating political risk, the tension between intuition and control, and the resilience she forged through personal loss and reinvention.Recorded on 13 August 2025.Connect with Natalia on LinkedIn at linkedin.com/in/natalianavarre/.Instagram: @at.the.coalfaceAnd don't forget to subscribe to At the Coalface for new episodes every two weeks.Help us produce more episodes by becoming a supporter. In this raw and unforgettable episode, we sit down with Renzo, a man whose story takes us from the halls of an Ecuadorian naval academy to the darkest corners of addiction — and finally, to redemption and love. Sent away as a teen in hopes of “straightening out,” he returned with more of taste for alcohol than ever. By 21, he was smoking meth. A move to the East Coast meant a fresh start… until heroin took over. His desperation ran so deep he once faked appendicitis — and had a perfectly healthy organ removed — just to score pain meds. After countless relapses, he finally got sober in his forties. The same day we recorded this episode, Renzo proposed to his girlfriend and they are now engaged — a full-circle moment for someone who never thought love or freedom was possible. Now, he works in treatment and shares his story to prove that no matter how far gone you feel, it's never too late to come back. This one's wild, honest, and packed with hope. You don't want to miss it.Can't wait to hear what you guys think!DM me on InstagramMessage me on FacebookListen AD FREE & workout with me on Patreon Connect with me on TikTokEmail me chasingheroine@gmail.comSee you next week!

What if the key to healing decades of chronic pain lies not in your conscious mind, but in the 95% of consciousness you're not even accessing? In this transformative episode of Why Isn't Everyone Doing This?, Emily dives deep with Jim Curtis, a transformational coach, master hypnotherapist, and author. Jim's story reads like a spiritual adventure novel: from getting hypnotized on national TV with Dr. Brian Weiss, to seeking healing from Ecuadorian shamans in the East Village, to finally accessing a quantum healing session that eliminated his pain completely and allowed him to stop taking 40mg of nicotine gum daily.
