In this explosive episode of Culture of Change, Ashe in America and Abbey Blue Eyes dive headfirst into the firestorm surrounding President Trump's nomination of Dr. Casey Means as Surgeon General. What begins as a critique of the credential-obsessed backlash turns into a full-blown investigation into the deeper concerns voiced by the MAHA base, ranging from her family ties and mRNA silence to the chilling alignment with globalist rhetoric. Ashe shares her initial support, then details how a fiery debate featuring Dr. Mary Talley Bowden, Jack Kruse, and Casey's brother Calley Means shifted her entire perspective. The duo dissects the growing divide between reformers and those demanding full-scale accountability for COVID-era crimes, exploring questions of justice, depopulation, and transhumanist agendas. From monkey DNA and HIV vectors in vaccines to personal stories of vaccine regret and systemic manipulation, the episode delivers a raw, no-holds-barred conversation about trust, leadership, and what it really means to “Make America Healthy Again.” They also turn a critical eye to Greta Thunberg's transformation, from climate martyr to Gaza activist, and follow the money trail that links radical NGOs, U.S. taxpayer funds, and global regime propaganda. The episode wraps with a sobering breakdown of “guilt programming,” the inversion matrix, and the war on truth being waged through psychological warfare. Bold, emotional, and fiercely real, this episode of Culture of Change pulls no punches and demands a deeper level of discernment from its audience.

This week is mainly devoted to listener questions and feedback. First, Ralph answers some of the questions you have submitted over the past few weeks. Then we invite back last week's guest, Erica Payne, of Patriotic Millionaires, to respond to your very thoughtful comments on the interview we did with that group's plan for preserving democracy by taxing the rich. Plus, Ralph highlights the outrages of the Trump/Musk assault on government programs that help ordinary people.Erica Payne is the founder and president of Patriotic Millionaires, an organization of high-net-worth individuals that aims to restructure America's political economy to suit the needs of all Americans. Their work includes advocating for a highly progressive tax system, a livable minimum wage, and equal political representation for all citizens. She is the co-author, with Morris Pearl, of Tax the Rich: How Lies, Loopholes and Lobbyists Make the Rich Even Richer. The real reason for taxation is democracy protection.Erica PayneI think the question is not: do we need to fix the estate tax? The question is: what is the best, most defensible mechanism through which you can tax the transfer of wealth from one generation to the other in order to protect American democracy from dynastic wealth—that is sufficient that you find five generations from now Elon Musk's kid isn't spending as much money on these elections as their great great great great great granddaddy is.Erica PayneAusterity applied at a federal level to a society that is in distress does the exact opposite of what the proponents of austerity are saying it should do. The tightening of the belt actually cuts off the circulation of the society.Erica PayneNews 5/9/251. While the Catholic clergy convene in Rome for the Papal Conclave, Pope Francis graces the world with one final gift. Vatican News reports, “His popemobile, the very vehicle from which he waved and was close to millions of faithful all around the world, is being transformed into a mobile health unit for the children of Gaza.” This article states this was Francis' “final wish,” and quotes his refrain that “Children are not numbers. They are faces. Names. Stories. And each one is sacred.” The vehicle is reportedly being outfitted with equipment for “diagnosis, examination, and treatment – including rapid tests for infections, diagnostic instruments, vaccines, suture kits, and other life-saving supplies,” and it will be staffed by doctors and medics. Yet, given Israel's track record for the destruction of medical facilities in Gaza, it is unclear how long this mobile health unit itself will survive.2. In more distressing news from Gaza, CNN reports that “A Gaza-bound activist aid ship [part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition] caught fire and issued an SOS, after what its organizers claimed was an Israeli drone attack off the coast of Malta…[on] Friday.” Per CNN, the ship was due to make port in Malta and pick up “a large contingent of activists” there before departing for Gaza. These included environmental activist Greta Thunberg and retired US Army Colonel Mary Ann Wright. Thunberg said this flotilla “is one of many attempts to open up a humanitarian corridor and…[try] to break Israel's illegal siege on Gaza,” adding “for two months now, not a single bottle of water has entered Gaza…it's a systematic starvation of 2 million people.” The United Nations World Food Programme said this week “its warehouses are…empty; soup kitchens that are still running are severely rationing their last stocks; and what little food remains in Gaza's markets is being sold for exorbitant prices that most cannot afford.”3. Pro-Palestine activists scored a major victory in Michigan this week. The Guardian reports, “Michigan's attorney general, Dana Nessel, announced on Monday that she was dropping all charges against seven pro-[Palestine] demonstrators arrested last May at a University of Michigan encampment.” As this report notes, “The announcement came just moments before the judge was to decide on a defense motion to disqualify Nessel's office over alleged bias.” The Guardian itself published a major report “detailing Nessel's extensive personal, financial and political connections to university regents calling for the activists to be prosecuted,” last October. Defense attorney Amir Makled is quoted saying “This was a case of selective prosecution…rooted in bias, not in public safety issues…We're hoping this sends a message to other institutions locally and nationally that protest is not a crime, and dissent is not disorder.”4. In another legal victory, Prem Thakker reported on May 6th that “A federal court has [denied] the Trump administration's attempt to move Mahmoud Khalil's case…out of New Jersey.” The government attempted to move the venue to Louisiana, where they have Khalil detained. A press release by the ACLU, their New York and New Jersey affiliates, and the Center for Constitutional Rights states, “It is the fundamental job of the judiciary to stand up to…government manipulation of our basic rights. We hope the court's order sends a strong message to other courts around the country facing government attempts to shop for favorable jurisdictions by moving people detained on unconstitutional immigration charges around and making it difficult or impossible for their lawyers to know where to seek their immediate release.”5. Trump has released his budget for Fiscal Year 2026. This budget cuts nondefense spending by 23%, per Reuters, while allocating 75% of discretionary spending to military and police, per Stephen Semler of the Cost of War Project. This includes a 13% increase in military spending that tips the Pentagon budget over $1 trillion for the first time. So much for increasing government efficiency.6. At the same time, this country's infrastructure and transportation safety agencies continue to crumble. Just this week, NPR reported “Hundreds of flight delays and cancellations…[hit]… Newark Liberty International Airport at once: [due to] air traffic controller staffing shortages, aging technology, bad weather and the closure of one of the airport's busiest runways.” The air traffic controller staffing shortages, a chronic issue, has been compounded in recent months by the mass layoffs initiated by the Trump administration. NBC News reports that one air traffic controller handling Newark airspace said, “Don't fly into Newark. Avoid Newark at all costs.”7. It might be nice to have competent, energetic leadership among the Democrats on the House Oversight Committee right about now. Unfortunately, the party opted to install 75-year-old, cancer-ridden Gerry Connolly to serve as Ranking Member on that committee instead of AOC. Now, Axios reports Connolly is stepping down from this position after just four months and will not seek reelection to his seat in Congress, citing his declining health. AOC, once-bitten, has opted not to seek the position a second time, the Hill reports. Instead, the top contenders emerging to fill Conolly's seat are Stephen Lynch, a 70-year-old Congressman who won his seat in 2001 and is currently filling Conolly's role on an interim basis, and Eleanor Holmes-Norton, the non-voting delegate representing Washington D.C. Norton is the most senior Democrat on the committee at 87-years-old, having assumed office in 1991.8. Another ghost is coming back to haunt the Democrats: former Senator Bob Menendez. The New Jersey Globe reports, “The New Jersey Attorney General's office will seek a court order to permanently bar…Menendez from ever holding public employment in the state following his conviction on federal corruption charges last year.” Critically if a Superior Court judge approves the action, Menendez could lose his state pension. Menendez still draws over $1,000 per month from his New Jersey public employee pension, even after being sentenced to 11 years in prison for corruption last July. More recently, Menendez has sought to cozy up to Trump in an effort to obtain a pardon. So far, no dice.9. In some positive news, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum continues an unbelievable run. Back in April, KJZZ reported that Mexico will invest nearly $3 billion in “food sovereignty,” to “produce more staples like corn, beans and rice in Mexico over the next five years.” This money will be directed at small and medium sized farms in Mexico and is intended to anchor both the rural economy and the nation's food supply amidst the growing uncertainty of trade with the United States vis a vis Trump's erratic trade policy. Then, after May Day, Labor Minister Marath Bolaños said that “before the end of President Claudia Sheinbaum's term…the government would gradually install a…40-hour workweek,” Mexico News Daily reports. The standard workweek in Mexico currently sits at 48 hours. As this report notes, the 40-hour workweek is Number 60 on Sheinbaum's list of 100 promises. Americans can only dream of having a government that even makes that many promises, let alone keeps them. Perhaps the most impressive of Sheinbaum's recent actions however is her recent rejection of Trump's attempt to strongarm her into allowing American troops to enter Mexico. Democracy Now! reports Sheinbaum told the American president, “The territory is sacrosanct. Sovereignty is sacrosanct. Sovereignty is not for sale.”10. Finally, on the other end of the presidential spectrum, there's Trump furiously posting on Truth Social about the “Movie Industry in America…DYING a very fast death,” deeming that this is “a concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a National Security threat,” and threatening a “100% Tariff on any and all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in Foreign Lands.” Obviously, this screed is basically nonsensical and it remains to be seen what will actually come of this threat, but what is notable is the response from organized labor. The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) issued a statement threading the needle between supporting Trump's effort to “return and maintain U.S. film and television jobs, while not…harming the industry overall.” On the other hand, the Teamsters – led by Sean O'Brien who has tied himself to Trump more and more since he spoke at the 2024 RNC – issued a statement “thank[ing] President Trump for boldly supporting good union jobs when others have turned their heads.” Would such a policy truly revitalize the workforce of the American entertainment industry? We'll have to wait for the sequel to find out. This has been Francesco DeSantis, with In Case You Haven't Heard. Get full access to Ralph Nader Radio Hour at www.ralphnaderradiohour.com/subscribe

Jess & Jamal discuss the drone attack on "Conscience," the Freedom Flotilla Coalition's civilian ship, anchored in international waters 14 miles off the coast of Malta. The ship was scheduled to take on board humanitarian activists from over 21 countries, then cut a humanitarian corridor to Gaza to deliver food, water and other life essentials to Palestinians in Gaza, among them Greta Thunberg and retired U.S. Army Colonel Ann Wright. Israel has imposed a complete siege on Gaza since March 2, not allowing an ounce of food or water in, and the 2.3 million Palestinians there are in imminent danger of starving to death.

Hype oder Revolution? – Das Neurodiversitäts-Konzept Prominent, erfolgreich, neurodivers: Stars wie Billie Eilish oder Greta Thunberg leben es vor. HECTIC AI SHOWNOTES CAUSE WE ARE LAZY, GOBBLESS. Enjoy! The Two Jacks - Episode 109: Election Update, Tariff Tremors & Online PolicingHosted by: Hong Kong Jack & Jack the InsiderWelcome to Episode 109 of The Two Jacks! This week, Jack and Jackdive into the thick of the Australian federal election, dissect President Trump's latest tariff moves, debate the policing of online speech, and touch on French politics, climate action, and sports.Key Topics Discussed:Australian Federal Election (00:00:20)Campaign Update: Entering the second week.Polling: Labor showing potential for a majority (News Poll 52-48), similar to other polls (51-49 to 52-48), despite a low primary vote (~32.5%). Recalls Labor's 2022 win with a similar primary vote.Leaders' Debate: Discussion of the Sky News debate between Peter Dutton and Anthony Albanese. Joel views it as a draw, though Albanese was declared the winner by audience vote (approx. 44-35).Campaign Weaknesses (00:17:45): Both Jacks agree the campaign lacks substance, particularly on crucial issues like productivity and housing affordability. They note the difficulty for citizens needing to live far from CBDs (e.g., South Morang vs. Fitzroy historically) and criticize the parties for avoiding hard decisions.US Tariffs & Global Economy (00:28:00 & 00:48:04)Trump's Tariff Policy: Discussion on the imposition and subsequent 90-day delay of new tariffs on countries like Vietnam (47%), the Philippines (17%), and others. Standard 10% tariff remains elsewhere.Negotiations: Reports of Vietnam, Thailand, and Japan engaging or preparing to negotiate, though Trump's claims about eagerness are questioned. Japan plans a "comprehensive response."Market Impact (00:30:08): Initial $9 trillion market loss, followed by a significant S&P 500 recovery (largest since 2008, but still below January levels). Oil prices jumped, and US bond yields fell, raising debt crisis concerns. Jack emphasizes the importance of bond yields (cost of borrowing for the US government).Motivations & Consequences (00:40:07): Is it an assertion of US economic muscle? Jack notes bipartisan support for the idea (feeling the US gets the short end), but the hosts critique the erratic rollout. Potential consequences include US inflation, slowed GDP growth, and job losses.Listener Feedback (Lawrence) (00:48:04): Criticizes the "schizophrenic" messaging (tariffs fixing jobs and deficits simultaneously) and the floated (but unconfirmed by Trump admin) idea of abolishing income tax.Outlook: Potential shift towards multilateral trade negotiations among other countries.Listener Feedback: ABC Radio (00:45:51)Listener Lawrence reflects on the Jacks' previous comments about changes at ABC Radio, noting a perceived shift in their stance from wanting "new blood" to "bemoaning changes."Joel's Clarification: Concern is about management bringing in people with FM radio backgrounds lacking national broadcaster experience, not against new faces generally.Jack's Clarification: Agrees on needing turnover ("new voices") but questions the strategy of chasing a youth demographic on ABC Radio, suggesting consolidation of the existing audience is better.Social Media Censorship & Online Dangers (UK Focus) (00:51:20)UK Arrests: Report from The Times: British police making ~33 arrests daily in 2023/24 for "offensive" online posts causing "annoyance, inconvenience or anxiety" (12,183 arrests total), a 58% rise since 2019.Policing Concerns: Many arrests lead to questioning and release without charge, raising questions about efficient use of police resources. Jack mentions the decriminalization of burglary adding context.Historical Context (00:54:31): Jack traces the issue back to the late 1990s and the concept of "non-crime hate incidents" arising from the Stephen Lawrence inquiry, arguing it introduced subjectivity and inconsistency compared to investigating objective crimes. He critiques arresting people before establishing if a crime occurred.Nuance & Online Harms (00:56:40): Joel notes arrests might relate to other offenses alongside "malicious communications." While agreeing trivial cases waste resources, he highlights the dark side of social media, including severe online bullying (mentions group "764-JAC") and stalking, arguing police surveillance is needed for serious threats.Under-16 Social Media Ban (01:02:37): Joel reflects on the Albanese government's ban, admitting he initially opposed it but is reconsidering due to the severity of online harms affecting children.French Politics Update (01:03:47)Far-right leader Marine Le Pen vows presidential run, controversially comparing herself to Martin Luther King Jr. and Alexei Navalny.Jordan Bardella (29 y.o. National Rally Chairman) emerges as a potential alternative, stating he could run if Le Pen is unable. Both Jacks see this as a likely and possibly strategically better outcome for the party.Climate Action & Protests (01:06:00)Discussion on Extinction Rebellion protests (e.g., Sydney Harbour Bridge closure) and their effectiveness versus public disruption.Critique of proposed policies like banning private jets or frequent flyer taxes as unworkable and unhelpful grandstanding.Jack jokes he's the "Greta Thunberg of Hong Kong" due to his low carbon footprint (no car, little travel).Sporting RoundupCricket (01:10:00): Sheffield Shield Final recap (Victoria vs WA), WA wins due to finishing top after a draw. Historical anecdote about Bill Ponsford's marathon innings in the 1948 final. Marcus Harris's recent form (161 in Shield, 138 for Lancashire).AFL (01:19:30): Discussion on Tasmania's potential AFL team, stadium funding debates, and the Gather Round concept's success in South Australia and potential future locations.Final Listener Note & Sign Off (01:29:46)Listener CD provides follow-up on a previous discussion about Basil Zempilis, noting his uncle (Con Zempilis) was the Chief Stipendiary Magistrate for Western Australia. The Jacks wrap up Episode 109.

Friday April 11 was the Global Climate Strike called by Fridays For Future, the group started by Swedish teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg. More than 50 people, mainly students, demonstrated at the State Capitol in Albany. We hear music by Terri Roben; Ryan, the local FFF organizer; Mark Dunlea of PAUSE/350 Albany and GELF (Green Education and Legal Fund); Kelsey from UAlbany; Vena; Matt Oill from XR and Socialist Alternative; and Hannah and RPI Sunrise. With President Trump having declared war on the transition to clean, renewable energy, it is critical that state lawmakers and Governor Hochul reverse course and include major climate measures in the state budget, starting with NY Heat, GAP, and the Renewable Capitol Act. Many spoke about the need to oppose capitalism and colonialism.

An overview of the first week of the federal election, and news about some Manitoba MPs facing a fight to retain their seats, is the focus of Episode 15.Part 1- Our Sunday column in the Winnipeg Sun struck a nerve after providing on-the-scene accounts of a March of crime.Crime wave in Winnipeg: Businesses and residents left to fend for themselvesBrazen thefts and organized shoplifting crews are beseiging convenience and drug stores. When the cops don't even show up to a break-in at a funeral home with corpses inside, you know the living like security guards and 7-Eleven clerks aren't a priority either- uunless their car windows have dark tint. From a reader- "I"m now wondering why we even fund the WPS any more. They do not serve us. They target us with ticketing. Thats it."12.40 Part 2- If you've been wondering how Mark Carney has been able to say he's making decisions about foreign policy without the confidence of the House of Commons, it's because on March 24th the Liberals secretly changed the Caretaker Convention Guidelines. Hear how this created " a legal and ethical gray zone." https://canada.ca/en/privy-council/services/publications/guidelines-conduct-ministers-state-exempt-staff-public-servants-election.htmlHow convenient. 19.00- You'll hear the outrageous descriptions of Pierre Poilievre by an Angus Reid Institute push poll to inflate support for Mark Carney. It's beyond outrageous.22.30- It's no wonder MSM election coverage avoids an analysis of the immigration crisis. We have a commentary from someone who knows who declared,"I've probably met a few dozen real, true refugees.... The rest are bogus. People gaming the system. People coached by consultants, lawyers, ghost agents. People using the refugee claim process to buy time. People using it to get work permits. That's how the system is built now."27.00- In his book Value(s), Mark Carney showered praise on the eco-alarmist Greta Thunberg. This of course doesn't square with his sudden support for the Canadian energy sector. The Liberal hypocrisy isn't limited to their leader. We play audio from January of one of his Ontario candidates insisting just two months ago that Canada needs even MORE carbon taxes.32.30 Part 3- Listeners and sources have provided assessments from the campaigns on the ground. After Jagmeet Singh ran the NDP out of money while propping up Justin Trudeau and accruing his pension, his MPs are facing annihilation at the ballot box. Among those in a dogfight- Leah Gazan, Niki Ashton, and the rookie MP Leila Dance. Meanwhile, in west Winnipeg, CPC incumbent Marty Morantz is facing voters with investments in the import-export markets who think his leader needs to make the fight against US tariffs the daily plank of the national campaign - "It's an epic battle."While claims fly that the Tory campaign is disorganized, crowds in the thousands continue to show up at rallies showing their support for a change in Ottawa. The 'mushy middle' - voters who swing from left to right - are targeted by media campaigns that highlight a narrative that the election is not about domestic concerns like affordability, public safety and foreign influence in our media and elections. That leaves longstanding questions unansswered- like what happened with those Chinese spies at the downtown Winnipeg lab? Maybe Mark Carney can tell us.******** The Funding campaign for Season Six is now underway - the target is $10,000 with the first contributions already in. * We provide unmatched content in the public affairs realm in Winnipeg! * You can support this work by using the PayPal link and other information on our Donate Page- or you can email us via martygoldlive@gmail.com

A version of this essay was published by firstpost.com at https://www.firstpost.com/opinion/shadow-warrior-what-zelenskys-debacle-says-about-us-newfound-clarity-13867967.htmlThe tongue-lashing received by Vladimir Zelensky in the Oval Office, in full view of the media, was a point of inflection. It highlighted something that we had suspected: the end of the ‘European Century' (or two or three), wherein they had risen to be the Masters of the Universe. Trump is emphasizing that the Atlantic was a 19th century story; with the rise of the US, the Pacific was the story of the 20th century; and the 21st finds the Indian Ocean rising.Zelensky's debacle was not the only pointer: Keir Starmer of the UK, despite some polite talk about the mythical ‘special relationship', was told sharply by Vance that there is no more free speech in the UK, and that it affects American technology companies and citizens. Let us remember also how Elon Musk lambasted the UK for its Pakistani rape gangs, and the limp-wristed reaction of its authorities. Trump also told Starmer “That's enough!”JD Vance, again, spoke some home truths to the Europeans at the Munich Security Conference, telling them their problems are home-grown: excessive migration, lack of democratic values, and censorship. All this is shocking to the supercilious elites of Europe, who are now seeing their cozy world collapse in front of their eyes: no more free-loading, no more Uncle Sam to the rescue. Suddenly, NATO is meaningless, and decades of Greta Thunberg and V-dem style lecturing, virtue-mongering and pontification are coming back to bite them on the backside. They must be recalling William Blake's apocalyptic vision in The Second Coming. Their world is indeed falling apart.Turning and turning in the widening gyreThe falcon cannot hear the falconer;Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhereThe ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worstAre full of passionate intensity. It's hard to blame the Europeans. They have forgotten how it was only yesterday, as it were, that they were being hounded by the Barbary pirates, enslaved and turned into janissaries by the Turks. I read how the author of Don Quixote had been himself captured, enslaved for five years, and ransomed in 1580 for 300 gold coins, worth some $40,000 today. The European Century has made Europeans, and us, Fourth Worlders or those formerly colonized by them (as V S Naipaul put it), forget that Europe is just a backwater, a mere peninsula, an appendage, to Asia. It is now reverting to just “Northwest Asia”. For most of recorded history, Europe was an uncivilized land of savages; it was only the lucky accident of the Industrial Revolution that gave it the wherewithal to dominate the world. But that is in the past: the economic center of gravity of the world has indeed moved from the Atlantic to Asia.Source: The Economist.comThe illusion that America is obligated to support Europe, and also to fight Russia to the bitter end as part of the Cold War, was nurtured by Atlanticist Eastern Europeans exercised by an age-old blood feud: that between the Russian Orthodox Church on the one hand, and Catholics and other Protestant churches on the other hand. Those certainties are now falling by the wayside, as Trump pivots to the Pacific and Indian Oceans, as well as back to isolationist Fortress America. As Zelensky did mention in his tirade, America has the good fortune to have two oceans around it, a serious moat. The US has been gaslighted for a long time by nose-in-the-air Europeans, most especially the mischief-makers at the UK's Whitehall (who are the real Deep State). But that's wearing off, and the blinkers are falling from their eyes. Sadly for Zelensky, he will be the first one affected by this new-found clarity.Zelensky also made several rookie mistakes. First, you don't go to your benefactor's lair (ie. the US Oval Office) dressed in a sweatshirt. Second, you don't talk over Trump. Third, you don't get into a shouting match in English with native speakers when English is your second language: you might miss the nuances of “you don't hold any cards”, for instance. Fourth, and most importantly, you don't trust Starmer, Macron, etc. and take up cudgels with Trump. The near-simultaneous “toolkit” tweets from a lot of EU grandees suggests they gaslighted Zelensky into his suicidal bit of bravado against Trump in the Oval Office. They used the exact same words! And Trump doesn't take slights lightly. The implications are dire. The Ukraine War is as good as over, because the Europeans alone cannot (or will not) supply Zelensky with enough weaponry to hold off Russia indefinitely. The most likely outcome is a ceasefire followed by a standstill agreement: what Ukrainian territory Russia currently holds it will continue to hold; Ukraine will be de jure partitioned. The rest is negotiable. If the Europeans had any sense, they would patch up with Russia. NATO as we know it will come to an end, and EU+Russia is a pretty powerful force, and neither will have to kowtow to China. With the US out of the picture, divided EU and Russia will both fall into the dhritarashtra alinganam of sweet-talking China. To their ultimate detriment, of course. It is good to contrast Trump's treatment of all these Europeans with his much gentler treatment of the Japanese PM Shigeru Ishiba, and the Indian PM Narendra Modi, both Quad partners. He was polite and businesslike with them. Also, when a reporter asked about AUKUS, the brain-dead partnership with the UK that Biden dragged another Quad partner, Australia, into, his response was: “What's that?”There were early glimpses of a Trump foreign policy taking shape, as I mentioned in two prior columns: Chronicles of a Foreign Policy Foretold and Trump's America and Modi's India. Now things are clearer: there's a new Sheriff in town, and things are going to be different. But, William Blake notwithstanding, it's not the end of the world. We will all carry on.1000 words, 1 Mar 2025 This is a public episode. Today on ParentData, we're airing an episode from Raising Parents, Emily's limited series podcast in partnership with The Free Press. The episode is the last in the series, but the first question we all need to grapple with before engaging with all the others: should you have kids? For most of human history, having kids wasn't much of a choice. Social expectations, lack of birth control, and limited autonomy for women presented a couple of options: Have children, or join a convent. But the 1960s ushered in a big change. With better options for birth control and expanded career opportunities for women, many people for the first time could choose how many children to have, and whether they should have any at all. Fast-forward to today: More people are choosing not to have children for a wide range of reasons. Having children, of course, is a personal choice. But it's a choice that has broader implications. Everywhere across the globe—the U.S., Europe, Asia, Africa—fewer children are being born. And strangely enough, having kids has become part of the culture wars. There are pro-natalist public figures like Elon Musk on one side saying everyone needs to have more kids now in order to save humanity. And on the other side, people like climate activist Greta Thunberg say rising sea levels are so catastrophic that having kids in this era is akin to genocide. But there's no debate that the fertility rate is plummeting in America and around the world. Presently, American women, on average, have 1.8 kids. In the 1950s, it was 3. The replacement rate in the United States, which is the fertility rate needed for a generation to replace itself without considering immigration, is approximately 2.1 births per woman. Around the world, the fertility rate fell by more than half between 1950 and 2021, as many countries became wealthier and women chose to have fewer children. For economists like Emily, the speed with which the fertility rate is falling is cause for alarm. Economic growth depends, at least in part, on population growth. Retired people rely on generations of younger workers for support, through contributions to Social Security and taxes. With fertility rates in free fall, the math doesn't add up.That's the big picture. Now back to our own families, and a fundamental question: Should we even have kids in the first place, and what happens if we don't?Resources from this episode: • Bryan Caplan: Selfish Reasons To Have More Kids (Bookshop) • Gina Rushton The Parenthood Dilemma: Procreation in the Age of Uncertainty (Bookshop) • Leah Libresco Sargeant • Helena de Groot • Ross Douthat

Then, she speaks with comedian Francesca Fiorentini, host of the Bitchuation Room! First, Emma runs through updates on Israel's bombing of dense residential areas of Beirut and continuing war crimes at home and in Gaza, Harris' attempt to court Latino voters, Obama's attempt to court young black men, Trump's legal woes, Florida's power issues, voter registration in Florida and Georgia, Boeing's anti-labor action, and TD Bank's record-breaking money laundering fine, before parsing a little deeper into Trump decision to shit on the biggest city in a major swing state over… NATO tax rates? Dave Weigel then joins, diving right into the state of the US presidential race in major swing states like Arizona, highlighting Harris' recent pivot away from emphasizing a populist agenda towards vague bipartisan grandstanding with the few anti-Trump Republicans left while unpacking the positives (and negatives) of this approach electorally. Expanding on this, Dave and Emma parse through the polling numbers on high- and low-/mid-propensity voters – touching on Trump's particular ability to turn out that ladder group – and why Harris' strong numbers with newly registered voters is a major plus, before turning to the comparisons between the Dem's 2024 campaign and those in 2012 and 2016, and why the former – thankfully – might be the more accurate one. After touching on the evolution of Harris' messaging game post-convention, Weigel dives deep into the GOP's own insane choices for their messaging campaign – including a reliance on the ever-inconsistent Elon Musk and Turning Points – and what to make of their ongoing push for an anti-trans agenda despite its lack of electoral salience in the past, wrapping up the interview by assessing the dearth of a direct response to Republican narratives on crime, immigration, and trans rights, and what that vacuum in the Democratic messaging campaign might mean come November. And in the Fun Half: Emma and Bradley watch Jesse Watters put on an enchanting display of toxic masculinity with Stephen Miller, dive a little deeper into the absurdity of the Trump messaging campaign (with some help from JD Vance), and highlight the continued strength of Greta Thunberg's unapologetic anti-colonial activism.
