Het is 45 jaar later, maar de gebeurtenissen in de wereldpolitiek van 1980 zijn verbluffend en leerzaam voor het heden. Vlak voor de cruciale NAVO-top en de daaropvolgende EU-top gaan we op bezoek in het Kremlin van toen en naar de ruige bergpassen van Afghanistan en het Vaticaan – met ook toen een nieuwe paus uit een bijzonder land. Jaap Jansen en PG Kroeger over de paranoïde, dementerende leider in het Kremlin, Leonid Brezjnev. Het dagboek wat hij bijhield werd steeds leger. In het Westen maakte 'Eurosclerose' en verdeeldheid plaats voor 'één stem' en dynamiek. En een nieuwe paus riep: "Weest niet bevreesd!" In het bijzonder tegen zijn landgenoten en alle onderdrukten in het Oosten. De inval in Afghanistan in 1979 bleek direct al een rampzalige onderneming. Het kwam tot oneindig bloedvergieten, zware materiële verliezen en enorme schade aan de reputatie van de supermacht die hier in het drijfzand van de oorlog ten onder ging. Hoe kwam het tot die militaire ramp? Waarom maakte het Kremlin zo'n grote fout en waarom durfde niemand daar ermee te kappen? Brezjnev verpestte zo niet alleen zijn grote trots, de Olympische Zomerspelen in Moskou, maar ook de relatie met Washington. Afghanistan ruïneerde de herverkiezing van de Amerikaanse president Jimmy Carter, Brezjnevs droom van wereldheerschappij samen met Amerika en de faam van technologische superioriteit van de Sovjeteconomie. Vilein sloot China's Deng Xiaoping een alliantie met Amerika, Arabische landen en islamitische strijders - gefinancierd door rijke families als Bin Laden - om Moskou verder in het verderf te storten. Zelfs vazal Saddam Hoessein in Bagdad trok zich van Brezjnev niets meer aan en begon zijn eigen oorlog. Het bewind in Moskou was in verval, wereldwijd. Al in 1968 had KGB-chef Joeri Andropov gewaarschuwd dat de economie op instorten stond. Maar Brezjnev gokte liever op het gasgeld en stopte diens memorandum in de diepste la van zijn bureau. Toen Andropov hem 1982 opvolgde was het te laat, ook de chef van de geheime dienst was zwaar aan het aftakelen. Hij promootte nog jonge protegés als Gorbatsjov, Jeltsin en Poetin, maar zijn beleid stokte in repressie. Hij stierf al snel en zijn opvolger, de bureauchef van Brezjnev Konstantin Tsjernenko, was een nog korter leiderschap beschoren. De oorlog ging voort, het bloedvergieten was vreselijk, het Russische Rode Leger bleek zwak en ouderwets. Deng opende de poorten naar het Westen en China nam een finale voorsprong als nieuwe tijger van de wereldeconomie.De nieuwe Kremlinchef, Michail Gorbatsjov, kende die poorten naar het Westen. Hij had incognito rondgereisd en in Frankrijk een paradijs voor de arbeiders, welvaart, overvloed, openheid en culturele dynamiek ontdekt, waar Moskou geen idee van had. In Londen ontdekte hij een felle discussiepartner. Maggie Thatcher, met wie hij ongeremd kon bekvechten.Maar ook hij was te laat. Een nieuwe generatie westerse leiders trad aan. Van Helmut Kohl tot Ruud Lubbers en Ronald Reagan. De Europese Gemeenschap bloeide op, terwijl Moskou en de DDR het ravijn van een bankroet zagen opdoemen. De Afghaanse oorlog bleef een bloedende wond tot Gorbatsjov de aftocht blies. De paus en de Polen zorgden voor een revolutie. De Muur viel. De analogieën met vandaag zijn adembenemend. Zelfs de obsessies van de leiders in het Kremlin en hun vernedering door China lijken op elkaar. En ook hoe Europa zichzelf hervindt en een nieuwe paus ineens zijn stempel drukt. De smoezen van Sergej Lavrov om Leo XIV buiten de deur te houden zijn bijna lachwekkend herkenbaar. En Donald Trump? Die is geen Reagan of George Bush senior. The writer of Hebrews said it this way, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever,” (Heb 13:8). This means that GOD is faithful! We can trust Him. What He says is true. What He said He will do, we know He will do. Moses spoke of how God was faithful to bring Israel through to the Promised Land (Dt 7). David said that the faithfulness of God “reaches to the skies,” (Ps 36:5). The prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah both spoke of how faithful God was to them and the nation of Israel. Hebrews Part 19 (Heb 10:24-25) There's a verse in Hebrews that scholars agree is strangely worded, and a little scary if translated correctly. They don't talk about what it might mean to follow this command in practice. Yet actually it is a key to our deep growth.

We continue reading the challenging chapters of the letter to the Hebrews. It was obviously written in the final years the Temple existed in Jerusalem before it was destroyed in AD70. Those who made the Temple and the Mosaic Law a highly important part of their lives and expectations, although accepting Jesus as their Messiah, were going to be devastated when the Temple was destroyed.Paul, whom it is generally agreed wrote Hebrews, is making a most urgent appeal to these believers to realize that although “Moses was faithful in all God's house as a servant” this was “to testify to the things that were to be spoken later” [3 v.5] by God's son. Moses was God's “servant” – “but Christ is faithful over God's house as a son.” [v.6] The Law was “the house” Moses created, it had now been superseded by the work of Christ in creating a spiritual house “not made with hands” [2 Cor. 5 v.1] that could not be destroyed.“And we are his house if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting (rejoicing –AV) in our hope” [Heb 3 v.6] Note that word “if” and that Psalm 95 is quoted twice, [3 v.7; 4 v.5] “Today, IF you will hear his voice”Today – in 2025 – let us “hold fast” to what we hear – and read. If we are not really listening and taking the message into our hearts and acting on it – then the message is no benefit to us. We noted verses 2 and 4 in ch. 4, “For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened.”Could this be true of us also? Are you united with others in the original faith? Note how the word “if” occurs in ch. 3 v.13,14; “But exhort one another every day as long as it is called ‘today' that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. For we share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.” May “the message … benefit' us as ”every day” we seek exhortations as we read God's word.

Vandaag: Frankrijk-correspondent Frank Renout. Frank woont al meer dan 20 jaar net buiten Parijs. Tussen de vogeltjes vindt hij de rust die nodig is om de hectische nieuwsdagen aan te kunnen in de stad. Want Frankrijk zit niet stil: zeker politiek is het tumultueus de afgelopen tijd. De Franse samenleving is heel erg verdeeld in een driedeling tussen de stad, de voorsteden die banlieues heten en het platteland. De gevolgen daarvan kan Frank scherp analyseren na al die jaren in het land. En de vele gebruiken en cultuurverschillen blijken toch groter dan we denken van een land zo dichtbij huis waar veel Nederlanders vaak komen om vakantie te vieren. De jonge Frank Renout draaide z'n hoofd razendsnel bij het horen van sirenes en wil altijd al overal vooraan staan. Journalist worden was dus een logische stap. Eigenlijk dacht hij als twintiger aan een heel ander werelddeel, maar z'n vrouw spoorde hem in 2004 aan om de stap te wagen en te emigreren naar Frankrijk. Nu vormen ze samen een team om verslag te doen van al die grote nieuwsgebeurtenissen van de afgelopen jaren: aanslagen, de brand in de Notre Dame, vele presidenten, maar ook waarom baguettes nou zo lekker zijn. Maar niet elke week in het leven van een correspondent zit vol joie de vivre: Frank stond dinsdag nog langs de weg met een kapotte auto. De cultuurtip van Frank: De serie Dix pour cent op Netflix. Ondanks de nog recente inzet van Johan Remkes lukt het Schoofs kabinet niet het probleem aan te pakken. BBB poogde eerder al de verantwoordelijkheid in de schoenen van 'Brussel' te schuiven, maar toenmalig Eurocommissaris Frans Timmermans zette Caroline van der Plas handig klem. Daarna hebben we niets meer gehoord over de aangekondigde BBB-stikstofwet samen met JA21. Het probleem bleef levensgroot aanwezig. Daarom werd iemand anders eigenaar gemaakt van dit hoofdpijndossier: Dick Schoof.Behendig heeft Van der Plas de premier en zo'n beetje het halve kabinet coproducent gemaakt van het onvermogen van haar Landbouwminister minister Femke Wiersma. Resultaten blijven uit en de schuld wijd gespreid. Slachtoffer daarvan is overigens de politieke reputatie van vicepremier Mona Keijzer – óók BBB. De premier erkende in de Kamer dat hij geen idee had gehad hoe complex dit vraagstuk was. Daarmee toonde hij onbedoeld dat zijn vermogen tot teambuilding zeer beperkt is. Het stikstofdossier verlamt zo niet alleen de natuur, woningbouw, infra, defensie en agrarisch beleid, maar ook het kabinet zelf. Hoe krijgt gastheer Schoof op de NAVO-top uitgelegd dat Nederland de noodzakelijke defensie-infrastructuur niet kan realiseren?PVV-leider Geert Wilders had zijn beleid geëvalueerd en concludeerde dat alles over moest. Zijn nieuwe tienpuntenplan is de erkenning van een bankroet. Wilders maakte zichzelf verwijten, maar ook Schoof als Rutte-kloon, de VVD en vooral NSC. Niet zijn PVV-minister Marjolein Faber.Opvallend is hoe de PVV haar eisen legitimeert met een beroep op juist het Europees Verdrag dat Wilders al in 2005 virulent bestreed. Het feit dat bondskanselier Friedrich Merz bereikt wat de PVV niet lukt, zou bewijzen dat het wel kan. PG Kroeger vermoedt iets anders: Wilders krijgt in Europa's radicaalrechtse kringen blijkbaar zélf verwijten van onvermogen en slapte omwille van het overleven van Schoofs kabinet. Hij toetert wel, maar levert ook naar het oordeel van Viktor Orbán, de AfD en Jordan Bardella niets. Zelfanalyse was er ook bij Pieter Omtzigt. Conclusie was dat hij na de zomer weer actief wordt en zelfs een internationaal congres gaat organiseren. "Regeren over je graf is best leuk." De deconfiture van NSC was ieders schuld, behalve van hemzelf. Opvolger Nicolien van Vroonhoven - bij acclamatie en zonder 'goed bestuur' procedure op het schild gehesen - zette prompt een ander thema in als kern van NSC. Een 'culture wars' betoog dat ontsproten lijkt aan het grondslagdocument van NSC uit augustus 2023.Hoe moet het nu verder in de coalitie? Heeft Schoof nog gezag na de schimpscheuten van Wilders, het negeren door Omtzigt bij zijn vaarwel en zijn eigen erkenning complexe vraagstukken te onderschatten? De leider van de grootste regeringspartij heeft vooral spijt van zijn ‘redelijkheid'; zijn begrip voor Omtzigts teer gemoed en zijn luisterend oor. Het is het verdriet van Milders dat getroost moet worden. De coalitie nu opblazen zou de erkenning zijn van de combinatie van onkunde, onwil en onvermogen die alles beheerst. Dat dringt inmiddels ook door tot de kiezers. Als je een gast uitnodigt die afwisselend in Hongkong en Nederland woont, dan kan het even duren, maar uiteindelijk lukte het om Chang Ju Cheung bij ons aan te laten schuiven! Chang is op beide plekken journalist, programmamaker en presentator. Volkszanger en presentator Frans Bauer gaat vanaf oktober weer op tour en komt binnenkort met een nieuw programma op televisie. In de jaren negentig verwierf Bauer bekendheid met hits als ‘Als sterren aan de hemel staan' en ‘Heb je even voor mij', en geldt als een van de succesvolste artiesten van Nederland. Hoe voorkomt hij explosies of irritaties van een president die zich verveelt of door vage compromissen de kont tegen de krib gooit? Let daarbij op hoe andere fluisteraars ingezet worden. Met name de Fin Alexander Stubb. En laat Friedrich Merz zich meteen gelden met zijn €1000 miljard aan investeringen? Rutte is blij als de 'Pledge' kort en bondig op papier staat. En als de lidstaten voldoende comfort krijgen voor hun concrete uitwerking van de nieuwe plannen. Als Trump bij de slotverklaring dan maar niet onverhoeds met oude frustraties en nieuwe obsessies de zaak laat ontploffen, klinkt het onder diplomaten.Want de president is onvoorspelbaar en het beleid van zijn regering incoherent. Terwijl de Europese Unie een nieuwe, nu al historisch te noemen aanpak van defensie-inspanningen en voor de defensie-industrie in gang zet, hangen Trumps heffingen nog steeds boven de markt. NAVO-planners vrezen dat hij daarmee ook nog de inflatie aanwakkert en voor meer geld minder mogelijk maakt. Houdt hij zich met zijn handelsoorlog eigenlijk wel aan artikel 2 van het NAVO-handvest?Tegelijkertijd komt hij met een ultiem 'America First' plan: de 'Golden Dome' die zijn bondgenoten in de kou laat staan bij de bescherming tegen raketaanvallen. Om over de dreigementen naar Groenland en Canada nog maar te zwijgen. Deze Haagse top kon daarom weleens de eerste zijn van een NAVO met een 'Europese pijler' die bovendien verder strekt dan alleen de EU. Ursula von der Leyen staat in de startblokken. Meteen na de Top al komt in Brussel de Europese Raad bijeen.Op de Haagse top dreigen gastheer Dick Schoof en zijn ministers met lege handen te verschijnen. Rutte waarschuwde al nadrukkelijk dat zij duidelijkheid moeten verschaffen. Een ‘Haagse Belofte' zonder Den Haag zou ridicuul zijn.Brekelmans maakte een berekening wat Nederland kan bijdragen aan de NAVO-investeringen en kwam precies uit op Ruttes percentage: voor harde defensie-investeringen 3,5 procent van het bnp. Maar PVV en BBB willen zulke nieuwe uitgaven niet. Schoof zit bovendien vast met de stikstofperikelen en hun impact op Defensie en de benodigde infrastructuur. En het begrotingstekort is minstens zo'n pijnlijke klem. Moet het kabinet straks bij de Europese Commissie smeken om een uitzondering op de begrotingsregels voor de 19 miljard euro extra defensieschulden? "Liever niet," mompelt de premier. Tijdens een practicum op haar studie ontdekt de docent van Roos Vliegen (26) een hartafwijking. Eerst neemt ze haar klachten niet zo serieus, totdat ze tijdens een filmavond besluit naar de eerste hulp te gaan. Uiteindelijk blijkt dat ze haar studentenleven om moet gooien, waar ze uiteindelijk erg mee worstelde.  De studententijd is voor iedereen anders. Voor de één is het feesten, voor de ander keihard werken. Sommigen hebben de tijd van hun leven, anderen worstelen zich erdoorheen. Eternal life is the free, irrevocable gift of God granted to anyone who believes in Jesus Christ as Savior (John 3:16; Rom 6:23; Eph 2:8-9). It is not earned, maintained, or forfeited by works or behavior—it rests solely on Christ's finished work and is received by faith alone (Rom 4:5; John 5:24). Discipleship, on the other hand, is the lifelong call to follow Christ through obedience, service, sacrifice, and spiritual growth (Luke 9:23; Rom 12:1-2). A believer who turns away from that call and embraces a life of sin does not lose eternal life, but they do lose fellowship with God (1 John 1:6), damage their Christian testimony (1 Cor 3:1-3), forfeit eternal rewards (1 Cor 3:15), and place themselves under divine discipline, which can be both painful and severe—even to the point of physical death (1 Cor 11:30; Heb 12:6). De derde woensdag in mei is Verantwoordingsdag. President Pieter Duisenberg van de Algemene Rekenkamer presenteert dan zijn onderzoek naar het regeringsbeleid van het afgelopen jaar. "Ja, dat is dus ook de dag van de belastingbetalers, omdat die dan inzicht krijgen wat ministers doen met hun geld”, zegt hij. In gesprek met Jaap Jansen en PG Kroeger kraakt hij een reeks harde noten. Veel gaat naar behoren, de financiën en hun beheer zijn snel hersteld van de klappen uit de coronajaren. Stel duidelijke doelen. Beloof niet wat je niet aankunt. Wees duidelijk en eerlijk over de resultaten.Duisenberg noemt het regeerprogramma van het kabinet-Schoof wat betreft zulke beginselen van goed bestuur ‘teleurstellend'. Doelen, resultaten en instrumenten zijn vaag of ontbreken soms geheel. Zo zijn de ramingen voor het beleid van Asiel en Migratie al zo'n twintig jaar een rommelpot. Voortdurend moet met noodmaatregelen bijgesprongen worden en dat is erg duur, inefficiënt en zet mensen soms letterlijk in de kou. Als het kabinet dit terrein zo belangrijk acht, zou juist hier realistisch ramen en plannen voorop moeten staan. Ook de enorme bezuiniging van 22% op de uitgaven voor rijksambtenaren is wel erg ondoorzichtig. Duisenberg constateert dat het aantal ambtenaren alleen maar stijgt, ook de inhuur van externen, en dat een fundamentele aanpak alleen lukt als overheidstaken veel eenvoudiger ingericht worden. "Begin dan meteen met de WIA." Hiermee dreigen miljarden aan gaten in de kabinetsplannen. "Dat zijn uitgestelde teleurstellingen die je nu al ziet aankomen. Dan moet je bijsturen en corrigeren." Zo stelt het kabinet dat Nederland ‘de top van de mobiliteit wil zijn'. Duisenberg: "Wat is dat, de top? Als je dat niet concreet maakt en de plannen niet kunt financieren, is dat geen serieus beleidsdoel." Zeker niet als tegelijkertijd bruggen op instorten staan. Bovendien blijven zaken liggen die juist veel kunnen opleveren. Het saneren van ondoelmatige fiscale regelingen kan 30 miljard euro besparen. "Stoppen tenzij. Dat is dan de stelregel voor effectief beleid." Duisenberg stelt vast dat het kabinet hier aanvankelijk slechts 250 miljoen wilde besparen en inmiddels nog minder. “Dat schiet niet op.”Bij Defensie zijn de uitdagingen enorm. "Kwetsbaar" zegt Duisenberg eufemistisch. Niet alleen blijkt de beveiliging er nog steeds volstrekt niet op orde - zelfs bij de cruciale kabels voor cyberverkeer - ook blijft veel op de plank liggen of onuitgevoerd. De aangekondigde expansie van uitgaven roept vooral kopzorgen op. Duisenberg maant dat men hier ‘écht realistisch ramen moet'; ook met de NAVO-partners samen zodat niet ieder land voor zich maar aanrommelt. Beloven wat je helemaal niet aan kunt, is - zeker hier - funest. En dan blijkt ook nog dat Nederland de afspraak om 2 procent van het bnp aan defensie te besteden alleen op papier blijkt te halen. De Rekenkamer ontdekte verschil tussen de veel te positieve raming bij Financiën vergeleken met het behaalde resultaat op Defensie. Dit wegmoffelen wekt weinig vertrouwen in aanloop naar de NAVO-top in Den Haag. Geen wonder dat de Rekenkamer in NAVO en in EU-verband nadrukkelijk actief wordt. Duisenberg vertelt over een alliantie met de Duitsers, Tsjechen en Slovenen om verantwoording van defensie-uitgaven beter te borgen.Ook vertelt hij over een fors conflict met minister Eelco Heinen (Financiën) over hoe Nederland zijn nationale balans formuleert en daar toezicht op houdt. Nederland is hier 'een Asterix-dorpje' in Europa.Juist omdat na de bankencrisis, de coronacrisis en de energiecrisis de situatie weer meer op orde is gekomen, is de Rekenkamer streng. Ook naar de Tweede Kamer. Zij moet haar budgetrecht actiever hanteren, bijvoorbeeld door de speciale controle-aanpak bij 'grote projecten' veel vaker en stevig in te zetten. The Bible begins with a garden, and it ends with a garden. In the first garden, Adam and Eve sinned and what they received and what we inherited was a curse. To Eve and all her daughters, God said: I will greatly multiply your pain in childbirth, in pain you shall deliver children; yet your desire will be for your husband, and he shall rule over you (Gen. 3:16). To Adam and all his sons, God said: Cursed is the ground because of you; with hard labor you shall eat from it all the days of your life. Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; yet you shall eat the plants of the field; by the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, until you return to the ground, because from it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return (Gen. 3:1719). Essentially, what the curse would produce for them was the kind of suffering that sticks. What do I mean by characterizing the curse with the kind of pain that sticks with you? If you have ever suffered from nerve pain, you know from experience the kind of pain I am talking about. There are some prescription medications that can help numb you to the pain, but nerve pain is very difficult to treat. If you have had sciatica, any form of back pain, a pinched nerve, or anything of that nature, you have experienced the kind of pain that sticks. Sometime ago I read a quote from someone who said, Our first parents bit into the forbidden fruit and our teeth have ached ever since. That person was not referring to the kind of ache you might experience when you bit into something cold or hard, no... the kind of ache is the one I experienced after having all four impacted wisdom teeth taken out of my jaw in my late 20s. The curse has left us with a kind of aching that sticks and is with us until our final breath, and it is this ache that leaves us with tears. Tears over our broken world, tears over a relationship, tears over wayward children, tears over the hurt and damage caused by parents, tears over the problems sin causes in our world and to our own selves. The House that Adam and Eve Had Adam and Eve enjoyed the presence of God in a Garden that was not at all dissimilar to the tabernacle the Israelites set up and tore down as they journeyed in the wilderness, nor was it unlike the temple Solomon built after Davids death. The tabernacle and temple were designed as a model to reflect Eden as the house of the Lord. What Adam and Eve had in the garden was a gift from God that included the presence of God; In his excellent book, The Warrior Savior, Owen Strachan wrote of Eden, From the start, God sought faithfulness on the part of his people through testing. He gave them a forest-garden overflowing with beauty and gladness, trees spilling unblemished fruit, but he also gave them a prohibitionone delivered under the starkest terms: death from disobedience.[1] The tabernacle and the temple served to remind Gods people not only of the beauty of Eden but the promise that His people would one day be where He is... in His presence. So, when David wrote the last line in Psalm 23, it was the promise of God to restore what was lost in Eden that he had his heart and eyes set upon. To be in the house of the Lord is to be with the Lord. David does not have a building in mind here, but to be in the presence of God. The house of the Lord is not a structure but wherever it is that He dwells. What made the loss of Eden so devastating and catastrophic was not Adam and Eves expulsion from the garden, but that they were driven away from the presence of God. In other words, what made Eden home was the presence of God not the other things that were a part of Edens beauty. Before Adam and Eve were driven outside of the garden, God cursed the snake and promised the first couple that things would not stay cursed because He would send a Deliverer to reverse the curse of sin. The serpent entered Gods house (the Garden) and enticed Eve and her husband to doubt God and question both His goodness and faithfulness! In the garden the crafty and cunning snake spoke: Has God really said, You shall not eat from any tree of the garden? Eve replied: From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die (Gen. 3:23). The serpent then went in for the strike: You certainly will not die! For God knows that on the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will become like God, knowing good and evil (Gen. 3:45). Adam and Eve succumbed to Satans temptation and bit into the forbidden fruit, but that is not how the story ends! God found the couple and He spoke to the great serpent what is a promise to all mankind: And I will make enemies of you and the woman, and of your offspring and her Descendant; He shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise Him on the heel (Gen. 3:15). Strachan observes: In Genesis 3, the snake spoke first. But the snake did not have the last word in Eden, just as the devil will not have the last word in history. Strachan continues: When God shows up, the hiding stops, and justice rolls down.... the God who comes to earth is not only pursuing a mission of justice. This God is, even more, about to unleash a great rolling flood of mercy.[2] It is the promise of a better Eden through the promise of a snake-stomping redeemer that David had in mind when he wrote: Certainly goodness and faithfulness will follow me all the days of my life, and my dwelling will be in the house of the Lord forever (v. 6). Who can guide me, who can restore me, who will keep me, who will bless me, and who is it that loves me? It is the Lord of the 23rd Psalm and He will lead me to the place where I will be able to see Him face-to-face in His house forever. The House that We are Promised We have seen over and over again throughout this series that the Lord of the 23rd Psalm is Jesus the Good Shepherd, for He said of Himself: I am the good shepherd, and I know My own, and My own know Me, just as the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep (John 10:14-15). The serpent is a thief, and Jesus said of him: The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came so that they would have life, and have it abundantly (John 10:10). The 23rd Psalm is the promise of the abundant life that can only be experienced through the good shepherd. The abundant life includes the table He has prepared before me in the presence of my enemies (v. 5a). The abundant life is to have His favor in the form of the oil He has anointed my head with and the cup he has placed in my hand that is overflowing with His blessing! This is what Paul meant when he wrote Ephesians 1:3, Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ... The cup of Gods favor is Ephesians 1:7, In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our wrongdoings, according to the riches of His grace. Now, think again what it is that the 23rd Psalm is saying to those of us who have been found by the good shepherd. The good shepherd leads me: The Lord is my shepherd, I will not be in need. He lets me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. The good shepherd restores me: He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for the sake of His name. The good shepherd keeps me: Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. The good shepherd blesses me: You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; my cup overflows. The good shepherd loves me: Certainly goodness and faithfulness will follow me all the days of my life, and my dwelling will be in the house of the Lord forever. What does this all mean? There are no green pastures or quiet waters without Jesus leading you. There is no restoration for your soul or the righteousness you need apart from Jesus as your guide. There is no walking THROUGH the valley of deep darkness apart from Jesus keeping and guarding you. There is no blessing and treasuring of God upon you without Jesus. Finally, there is no goodness, faithfulness, and a better Eden apart from the God who loved you so much that He sent His one and only Son! Why did David long to dwell in the house of the Lord? What is it that makes heaven great? For what reasons does the promise of a better Eden outweigh all the sorrows of this world? These questions have nothing to do with the place and location of the house of the Lord, heaven, a new and better Eden, but everything to do with the One who is in the House David longed to dwell, heaven, and the new and better Eden. When Jesus prayed hours before His crucifixion, He prayed this: Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world (John 17:24). This is one of the reasons Jesus assured His disciples: In My Fathers house are many rooms; if that were not so, I would have told you, because I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I am coming again and will take you to Myself, so that where I am, there you also will be (John 14:23). For David, the blessing of being in the house of the Lord forever was that he would be with the Good Shepherd forever. In his commentary on Psalm 23, James Johnston commented on this very point: Take away the people and a house becomes a sad and empty place. The joy of Heaven is not mansions or streets of gold. Jesus is the joy of Heaven. It will be home because he is there.[3] The Better House that David Longed For For starters, what we know from verse six is that it is certainly ours, which means that without any doubt, for those of us whose shepherd is Jesus, our dwelling will be with him. How long will our dwelling be with Him? The answer is simple: Forever. What is the House that we will dwell in forever, besides the fact that it is the Lords house? It is the restoration of what was lost in the first Eden, but better! It is the city that Davids great, great, great grandfather longed to receive, for we are told from the book of Hebrews: By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he left, not knowing where he was going. By faith he lived as a stranger in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, fellow heirs of the same promise; for he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God (Heb. 11:810). Abraham was looking for a city not made with human hands because he longed for the same thing David longed for in Psalm 23:6. The house of the Lord is the city that belongs to the Christian: For here we do not have a lasting city, but we are seeking the city which is to come (Heb. 13:14). We will receive the city we are looking and longing for when God makes all things new once and for all. It is the thing that Paul wrote about in Romans eight, For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the eagerly awaiting creation waits for the revealing of the sons and daughters of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. (Rom. 8:1821) The house of the Lord that David was looking forward to spending forever in is a resurrected and redeemed earth free from the curse of sin. The Bible is full of images describing what it will be like to live in a resurrected earth free of the curse of sin. In Revelation 21, we are told that when God does make all things new and we inherit the city He has promised us, He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away (Rev. 21:4). On that day, we will see God face to face in the same way that Adam and Eve did; here is what we are told in Revelation 21:3, Behold, the tabernacle of God is among the people, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them... God will wipe away our tears because there will be no curse to cause them ever again. The new earth will be like the Garden of Eden but better; it will also be like heaven today, but better. We will enjoy physical bodies and a physical planet where the veil that shields our complete interaction of all that is spiritual will be pulled back. We will walk with angels; enjoy a full and perfect creation that will include trees, mountains, and rivers. There will be one City the City of God where we will be able to go in and out. We will run through the forests, climb mountains, eat amazing food, run barefoot through the prairies, enjoy the light of something more powerful and radiant than the sun. We will dwell on a new earth that will never again know the cold of night, but the light of a day illuminated by the Glory of God. But understand this: none of it will be worth it if our Triune God is not there! Listen, we will dwell in the house of the Lord forever because of the certainty of His goodness and faithfulness that pursues His sheep.      By promoting the gospel and biblical teaching, the church disrupts Satan's domain of darkness by calling out of it a people for God. By learning God's Word, Christians can identify worldly conversations and activities and either avoid them or seek to redirect them by interjecting biblical truth, which should never be done in hostility. When sharing God's Word with others it's proper to know that not everyone wants to hear God's truth, and even though we may not agree with them, their personal choices should be respected (Matt 10:14; Acts 13:50-51). We should never try to force the gospel or Bible teaching on anyone, but be willing to share when opportunity presents itself. At times this will bring peace, and other times cause disruption and may even offend. In this interaction, the growing Christian must be careful not to fall into the exclusion trap, in which the worldly person (whether saved or lost) controls the content of every conversation, demanding the Christian only talk about worldly issues, as Scripture threatens his pagan presuppositions. Having the biblical worldview, the Christian should insert himself into daily conversations with others, and in so doing, be a light in a dark place. He should always be respectful, conversational, and never have a fist-in-your-face attitude, as arrogance never helps advance biblical truth (2 Tim 2:24-26). The worldly-minded person may not want to hear what the Christian has to say, but he should never be under the false impression that he has the right to quiet the Christian and thereby exclude him from the conversation.      As we grow spiritually and walk with God, learning and living His Word (2 Tim 2:15; 3:16-17), we stand in opposition to Satan's world-system and sow the seeds of spiritual insurrection in the lives of those who live and walk in his kingdom of darkness. We disrupt Satan's kingdom when we share the gospel, “that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures” (1 Cor 15:3-4). When anyone places their faith in Christ, trusting solely in Him as Savior, they are forgiven all their sins (Acts 10:43; Eph 1:7), gifted with eternal life (John 3:16; 10:28), and the righteousness of God (Rom 4:1-5; 5:17; 2 Cor 5:21; Phil 3:9). They are rescued from Satan's enslaving power, as God liberates them from the “domain of darkness” and transfers them into “the kingdom of His beloved Son” (Col 1:13). The gospel is the only way a person can be delivered from spiritual slavery; “for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes” (Rom 1:16). Once saved, we seek to influence the thoughts and lives of other Christians through fellowship (Heb 10:23-25), prayer (Jam 5:16), edification (Eph 4:29), encouragement (1 Th 5:11), love (1 Th 4:9; cf. Eph 4:14-15), and words of grace (Col 4:6). The Sin Nature Within Us      If the devil were a broadcaster sending out his signal through the world, the sin nature in every person is that internal receiver that is always tuned to welcome his message. The sin nature, sometimes called “the flesh” (Gal 5:17, 19) or “old self” (Rom 6:6; Col 3:9), has a natural affinity for Satan's values and his world-system. More so, the sin nature is not eradicated from the believer during his time on earth, nor is it ever reformed, as though it can be made to love God.       Everyone knows what it's like to walk in the flesh, according to the sin nature, but only the Christian knows what it's like to walk in the Spirit, assuming he's growing in his walk with the Lord. Paul wrote, “For the flesh [sin nature] sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you [the Christian] may not do the things that you please”  (Gal 5:17). Concerning Galatians 5:17, MacDonald writes: "The Spirit and the flesh are in constant conflict. God could have removed the fleshly nature from believers at the time of their conversion, but He did not choose to do so. Why? He wanted to keep them continually reminded of their own weakness; to keep them continually dependent on Christ, their Priest and Advocate; and to cause them to praise unceasingly the One who saved such worms. Instead of removing the old nature, God gave us His own Holy Spirit to indwell us. God's Spirit and our flesh are perpetually at war, and will continue to be at war until we are taken home to heaven. The believer's part in the conflict is to yield to the Spirit."[1]      The sin nature is resident in every person; both saved and unsaved, and is the source of internal temptation. According to Wiersbe, “The flesh refers to that fallen nature that we were born with, that wants to control the body and the mind and make us disobey God.”[2] Since the fall of Adam, every person is born with a sin nature, and it is this nature that internally motivates men to rebel against all legitimate forms of authority, both human and divine. At the moment of salvation, God the Holy Spirit indwells us and gives us a new nature that, for the first time in our lives, has the capacity and desire to obey God. Because the sin nature is not removed from the believer after salvation, the believer begins to experience conflict within (Gal 5:17; Rom 7:14-23). Chafer states, “The presence of two opposing natures (not two personalities) in one individual results in conflict.”[3] Wiersbe adds: "The old nature (which has its origin in our physical birth) fights against the new nature which we receive when we are born again (Gal 5:16–26). No amount of self-discipline, no set of man-made rules and regulations, can control this old nature. Only the Holy Spirit of God can enable us to “put to death” the old nature (Rom 8:12–13) and produce the Spirit's fruit (Gal 5:22–23) in us through the new nature."[4] Lightner states: "Torn inside with desires to do that which we know is evil and new desires to please God, we experience the rage of the battle. The internal conflict manifests itself in everyday life as the believer is tempted to sin. The source of this conflict is the old sin nature, which is the root cause of the deeds of sin. In the conflict the believer is not passive. He has a vital role in determining to whom he will give allegiance—the old nature or the new nature. From the moment a sinner trusts Christ, there is a conflict in his very being between the powers of darkness and those of light. The one who has become a member of the family of God now faces conflicts and problems that he did not have before."[5]      As Christians, we are directed to “lay aside the old self…and put on the new self which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth” (Eph 4:22, 24). Since we have been “born again” and given new life (1 Pet 1:3, 23), the sin nature no longer has domineering power over us, and we can choose a life of righteousness (Rom 6:5-13). As we grow spiritually, we will be transformed from the inside out and gradually become more and more righteous as we walk with God. Sinless perfection will not be attained until we leave this world, by death or by Rapture, and are “conformed to the image of His Son” (Rom 8:29), who will “transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory” (Phil 3:21). Until then, we are commanded to “put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts” (Rom 13:14). We do this by choosing to live according to the Spirit's guiding, and starving the monster that is our sin nature. To “make no provision for the flesh” means we stop exposing ourselves to the things of the world that excite the flesh and lead to sinful behavior. The positive action is to grow spiritually with biblical teaching (2 Tim 2:15; 3:16-17; 1 Pet 2:2; 2 Pet 3:18), Christian fellowship (Heb 10:23-25), selfless living (Phil 2:3-4), prayer (1 Th 5:17), worship (Heb 13:15), and doing good (Gal 6:10; Heb 13:16). It is only by spiritual growth and drawing closer to God that we learn to glorify the Lord and live in righteousness.      Though the Christian will struggle all his life with his two natures, he also knows the victory is already won. The sin nature has been defeated and its strength diminished because of the believer's union with Christ (Rom 6:6, 11). At his resurrection, the Christian is guaranteed a new body in heaven that is free from the sin nature as it will be just the like body of our Lord Jesus (Phil 3:20-21), for “We know that when He appears, we will be like Him” (1 John 3:2), and “in Him there is no sin” (1 John 3:5).      The believer's focus must be on daily—moment-by-moment—spiritual growth, allowing the Holy Spirit to produce His fruit in their life (Gal 5:22-23) while resisting the flesh by making no provision for it (Rom 13:14). This includes guarding against worldly influences that stimulate the sin nature and choosing instead to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord (2 Pet 3:18). While sinless perfection will not be attained until the believer is glorified, we are called to continually pursue righteousness (2 Tim 3:16-17; Tit 2:11-14), relying on the Holy Spirit (Eph 5:18; Gal 5:16), who supplies the power to overcome the flesh. Ultimately, the Christian's victory is secured through ongoing dependence on the Holy Spirit, a willing heart, and a steady focus on spiritual growth.      In conclusion, though the battle with the flesh rages on, we do not fight alone or without hope. God has equipped us with everything necessary for life and godliness (2 Pet 1:3). We have His indwelling Spirit (Eph 1:13), His inspired Word (2 Tim 2:16-17), the intercession of Christ (1 John 2:1), and the support of fellow believers to help us stand firm. Our sin nature, though still present, no longer reigns; we are no longer its slaves (Rom 6:6, 14). Each step of faith, each moment of obedience, each act of love, reflects the power of God at work within us. The war may be lifelong, but the outcome is certain. So we press on—not in fear or defeat—but in confident expectation of the day when the struggle will end and we shall see our Savior face to face, fully conformed to His image (1 John 3:2). Until then, let us walk by the Spirit (Eph 5:18; Gal 5:16), live by faith (2 Cor 5:7; Heb 10:38), and abound in the good works prepared for us by our gracious God (Gal 6:10; Eph 2:10). Dr. Steven R. This can refer to feelings of resentment, anger, or harshness that can take root in a person's heart. The New Testament warns against allowing such bitterness to grow, as it can lead to division and strife within the community of believers.         How do we deal with Bitterness?     - 1 Get rid of it. Eph. 4:32 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. 32 Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.   Get rid of GK - to raise up your voice to deal with it.    YOU HAVE THE POWER OF YOUR OWN VOICE.  SPEAK IT OUT!       - 2 GO TO THE PERSON: Aaron stood before Moses.
