Where Energy meets Facts: Empowering People to Reduce Energy Costs The average western consumer has no idea how much energy they use. It's not really their fault — the energy system was never designed to give the consumer visibility into their energy consumption. We even measure energy in many different and confusing ways. Gasoline is in gallons. Power is in kilowatt hours. Propane is in pounds.  Structurally, energy companies are not incentivized to provide their consumers with data about their energy use. Collecting the data is a huge exercise in building integrations from various data sources to build up a picture of energy use. Households have many different energy suppliers (power and gas utilities, gasoline retailers), and there are many individual buyers.  It's not clear consumers will pay for that insight.  Jotson is setting out to challenge that problem and fix it. To quote Mark Little, the CEO and co-founder, it's baffling that mankind can put people into orbit around the planet, and land astronauts on the moon, but the average household can't figure out how much they're spending on energy. By giving consumers real data about their energy use, Jotson hopes to empower people to take charge of their energy consumption and to make better personal choices to reduce their demands on the energy system.  In this interview, I speak with Mark about his start up,  Jotson, and his mission to empower Canadians to manage household energy cost and consumption.  Mark has more than 35 years of leadership experience in the Canadian energy industry, including 23 years at Imperial/Exxon, and most recently as President & CEO at Suncor Energy. During his career, Mark has led large complex organizations working on multi-billion-dollar energy projects, from the conceptual design, development, and project implementation through to operations and maintenance.  Mark has led the startup and operation of large wind, solar, and biogas projects, and is one of the founding CEOs of Pathways Alliance, an initiative that sets the six largest oil sands companies in Canada on a path to reach net-zero CO2 emissions.   He is a board member of General Fusion, and an advisor to both the Coalition for a Better Future and Cycle Capital.  Mark holds two degrees – one in computer science from the University of Calgary, and one in applied petroleum engineering technology from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. He is also a graduate of the advanced management program at Harvard Business School.  From 2003 to 2007 he served as Honorary Colonel for the 409 and 441 Tactical Fighter Squadrons at 4 Wing Airforce Base in Cold Lake, AB; a role that reflected his commitment to the relationship between the Air Force, the community and industry. Mark was also the Recipient of the Canadian Council of Aboriginal Business' Award for Excellence in Aboriginal Relations 2024. Additional Tools & Resources:

In the second special celebrity episode of Why Care? I am joined by the multi-talented, Double Olympic Champion, Dame Kelly Holmes. We dive deeper into her  journey of self-discovery, personal experiences, and traumas, which she explores in her powerful memoir Unique. Kelly shares her emotional backstory in which she concealed her true identity and sexuality from the public and lived in fear for most of her life. We discuss the discriminatory military laws and systemic mistreatment of LGBTQ+ individuals in the British army, as well as the mental health impact. As a world-class athlete, Kelly opens up about the pressure to hide her sexuality, and how she overcame her fears and revealed her authentic self publicly. Kelly then shares her experiences attending a Pride event, becoming part of a supportive community, and about her LGBTQ+ advocacy work. At 18, Kelly pursued her dream to be an HGV driver and Physical Training Instructor in the British Army. In 1998, she was awarded a MBE for her services to the British Army and in 2018 became the first individual to be appointed Honorary Colonel to a regular unit. Meanwhile, Kelly also pursued her Olympic dream and was catapulted to fame in 2004 at the Athens Olympic Games for being the first woman ever in Great Britain to win two gold medals at the same games. She continued to raise the bar as an Olympic, Commonwealth, and European champion, achieving seven Gold, eight Silver, and four Bronze medals. She also won BBC Sports Personality of the Year and European Athlete of the Year. During the episode, Kelly shares her experiences of concealing her true identity and the fear she faced in revealing her sexuality to the public. She highlights the importance of education, understanding, acceptance, and authenticity regarding LGBTQ+ issues and the need to normalise attitudes toward the LGBTQ+ community. As Kelly recounts her extraordinary life story, she uncovers her experiences in the military, the traumatic military raids, and discriminatory laws targeting LGBTQ+ individuals. She then exposes the wider systemic discrimination in the military and the psychological traumas and mental health issues it caused, which she explored in her ITV documentary, Kelly Holmes: Being Me. As she developed her public persona as an international Olympic champion and world-class athlete, Kelly opens up about her fear of not being accepted for her sexuality and her anxiety about how this could impact her achievements. As she juggled her dual identity, she used defensive methods and was careful about how she projected herself to avoid judgment. Kelly then went on a journey of self-discovery, and at the age of 50, she finally accepted herself and came out about her sexuality. She embraced her true identity publicly the 2022 London Pride event, which was a powerful moment for her. Kelly acknowledges the pressures, challenges, and complexities of the coming out process, and uses her platform as an opportunity to combat stereotypes and to be an advocate for change. As a motivational speaker, Kelly shares how she connects with and inspires people through her personal experiences, but realises that her sexuality is just one aspect of her life. Now she has found happiness and inner peace, she focuses on her work and achievements and recognises the freedom of living authentically in a world where she can be proud to be herself, without the need for validation. That is to say, Canada's Largest Ribfest begins today! Canadian Conservative Member of Parliament Michael Chong, who was earlier in the year a subject of China's pressure campaigns, will speak to the United States' Congressional-Executive Commission on China. The New StatCan report say that Canada's economy stalled in this year's second quarter. Michael Chong is set to talk with the U.S. Congressional-Executive Commission on China. The fact that the U.S. is taking these steps is likely to irk Xi Jinping's government, and to see Canada combined is certainly eyebrow-raising: what sort of reaction can we expect to come out of this? As the conversation around the Greenbelt continues, and rightfully raises eyebrows in some cases, we can't lose sight of the fact that we still are in a housing crisis and need to be able to build our way out of it. With some rough poll numbers in the news, multiple crises and unresolved issues, as well as the associated grumblings from (anonymous) Liberal MP's all in mind… we ask, could the Liberal party soon send someone to try to convince Justin Trudeau to step aside? Dame Kelly Holmes MBE is one of the most respected and recognisable athletes the UK has ever produced. Many will remember when she triumphed at the 2004 Olympics in Athens to bring home two gold medals, and scenes of sheer joy following her incredible achievement. Kelly has won an array of medals during her sporting career, making her an Olympic, Commonwealth and European Champion and she continues to hold British records in the 800m and 1000m. Undoubtedly, to reach such sporting heights Kelly needed to have a great deal of determination and discipline. In many ways, that discipline came from her military career, when she joined the British Army aged 18. Whilst serving, she became a HGV driver and then a Physical Training Instructor and in 1998 she was awarded an MBE for her services to the British Army. It was in 2018 that she was made Honorary Colonel of the Royal Armoured Corps. Despite all her sporting and military success though, Kelly was having to hide a very important part of her life. Before the year 2000, LGBTQ+ people were banned from serving in the British Armed Forces - a rule that existed even after homosexuality had been decriminalised in the UK in 1967. Those who were found out or assumed to be LGBTQ+ in the military, were ‘discharged with disgrace', losing all their medals and their pension. Living in fear that someone might find out that she's a gay woman, Kelly kept part of her life secret and only her closest friends and family knew her story. However this year, Kelly decided to let the world in. In a documentary on ITV called Kelly Holmes: Being Me, Kelly came out and discussed her struggle in telling people about who she is and her deep concerns about being found out in the military. Now she is working tirelessly to support ex-service people who may have been discharged from the military, just because they're LGBTQ+. The UK Government is currently gathering evidence from people who may have served up until 2000, for the LGBT Veterans Independent Review. The aim is for the government to understand, acknowledge and, where appropriate, address the impact the ban has had on veterans today, which Kelly is a massive champion of.Following her documentary, the ITV Embrace, Pride, and Women's Network came together to chat with Kelly about her story and how she has become so much more aware of her own intersectionality. The event which was held early in October, was also a celebration of Black History Month and a chance to find out how race has impacted on Kelly's life as well. The talk was also recorded as an episode for the ITV Pridecast and alongside Liam McConkey to host it was Simmone Gardiner, from the Women's Network and Sonny Hanley from the Embrace Network. Kelly Holmes's documentary, Kelly Holmes: Being Me, is still available to watch on the ITV Hub. More information on the LGBT Veterans Independent Review, can be found on the UK Government website.

The partnership, which kicks off October 26 as Holland America Line completes the recreation of the brand's first-ever sailing from Rotterdam to New York City, features on-board video content across Holland America's entire fleet produced by an Ellis Island researcher, as well as a curated exhibit launching in 2023 at Ellis Island detailing the brand's historical prominence in bringing 1 in 10 immigrants from Europe to the United States. The collaboration will launch with a joint talk between Stephen Lean, director of The American Family Immigration History Center at Ellis Island and Bill Miller, noted cruise historian, detailing the immigrant experience in the late 1800s; the presentation will be available on-demand across all ships within the fleet. Noting the cruise industry's – and particularly Holland America Line's – importance in the immigrant journey from Europe to US, the Foundation will curate an exhibit in its History Center available for visitors from February to April 2023.The cruise line, which was founded in the Netherlands in 1873 as the Netherlands-American Steamship Company, was primarily a carrier of immigrants from Europe to the United States until well after the turn of the century, carrying nearly 2 million passengers to new lives in the New World. Holland America Line was the first to do away with “Steerage class” altogether, renaming it “Emigrants Class” where unlike the competition, guests were served three square meals. It is this level of care and attention to detail – a tradition and hallmark of the brand that has continued to this day – that was the impetus for its nickname at the time: “The Spotless Fleet.” Holland America Line provided everything from doctors and a pre-departure hotel complete with English lessons and classes on American civics to ensure passengers a safe journey to New York; and in fact, 99% of the immigrants carried on the fleet were cleared for entry through Ellis Island, a tremendous feat at the time.Holland America Line began the recreation of its first voyage with a sendoff October 15 from the Netherlands. The ship will sail past the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island as it arrives in New York City around 7am October 26.Windstar Cruises Partners with Coral Gardeners in TahitiWindstar Cruises has partnered with the Coral Gardeners, a Mo'orea (French Polynesia)-based organization determined to revolutionize ocean conservation and create a global movement to save the coral reefs through reef restoration, awareness activities, and innovative solutions. The team works to grow, plant, and monitor thousands of heat-resilient corals with the goal of bringing life back to the ocean. The three-year partnership begins this month with Windstar's $35,000 donation to Coral Gardeners to adopt coral for all guests sailing with Windstar in French Polynesia for the remainder of 2022.2022 is Windstar's 35th anniversary of sailing in Tahiti/French Polynesia – the longest of any operator in the region. (It's also the only destination where the U.S.-based cruise line sails year-round, giving guests ample opportunity to plan a once-in-a-lifetime visit in any season.) With two ships sailing French Polynesia throughout October, Windstar has been celebrating its 35th season all month long with special events, integration with local dignitaries and artists, and a heightened infusion of local culture both on board and ashore.Guests on the remaining 2022 sailings will receive a small card in their guest room, alerting them to the adoption of coral in their name. In 2023 and 2024, each guest booked on a Windstar cruise in French Polynesia will be presented with the option to adopt a coral for a donation of $35 per person. Unique coral adoption cards for those participating will be placed in their guest room on board.Windstar is confident the majority of guests will choose to donate to help save the reef they are enjoying on their Tahiti cruise.A decade of FUN down under It's been just over two weeks after returning to Australian shores and yesterday Carnival Cruise Line celebrated an incredible 10 years of providing Australians with fun-filled holidays at great value.Kicking off celebrations at Tangalooma, Moreton Island, passengers aboard Carnival Splendor were treated to the party of a lifetime with beach games on the sand, Carnival cupcakes and a giant ‘10 Years in Aus' sandcastle before returning to the ship for her journey home to Sydney.First arriving down under in October 2012, over one million guests have since experienced the fun of a Carnival cruise. The Hamilton Today Podcast with Scott Thompson... As the convoy and its supporters converge in Ottawa, we speak with Phil Gurski to get his read on the security concerns at play. The Fox 40 Whistle has many uses, and Burlington, Ontario's Animal Control has bought 1,200 of them, to help scare off coyotes! To tell us how this came about, is the legend himself, Ron Foxcroft! Gas prices aren't far from the minds of Canadians nowadays especially as it slowly creeps ever higher but are we going to get a new record high? What sort of political reaction could we see in response to the protests from the provinces that are watching Ottawa take the heat for issues that fall under the purview of the provinces, not the federal government? Monday sees a loosening that includes the return of surgeries deemed non-essential, and popcorn being sold in the newly reopened movie theatres, among other things. Dr. Kieran Moore has said that it is time to start looking at learning to live with COVID-19 – is this the way to go about that? With Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in isolation for COVID-19 exposure as part of protocol, and Erin O'Toole saying he will meet with truckers. What does it mean for the celebrities who are commenting on the convoy heading to Ottawa? This includes her double win in the 800m and 1500m at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, becoming the first Briton in over 80 years to do so. After her Olympic success, she won BBC Sports Personality of the Year, European Athlete of the Year and was honoured with a Damehood from the Queen.Kelly was raised by her mum on a council estate in Kent. She attended the local secondary school where, due to the belief and support of her PE teacher, she pursued her talent at running. Ferried to race meetings up and down the country by her family, she knows the importance of having a supportive team.At 18, Kelly left professional running to pursue her first dream, to be in the British army. She became an HGV driver and then a Physical Training Instructor, before being awarded an MBE for services to the British Army in 1998. In 2018, Kelly was appointed Honorary Colonel of the Royal Armoured Corps, marking her return to the army. The accolade was approved by Her Majesty the Queen, making it the first time an individual has been appointed Honorary Colonel to a regular unit.Kelly could never shift the dream of Olympic gold that she had since a child, but it was a very tough journey there. Her running career was overshadowed with repeated injury and disappointment. Recurring physical injuries contributed to periods of clinical depression and self-harm that continued to affect her just one year before her Olympic double win.Soon after this win, Kelly set up the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust.
