In this episode of Ojai Talk of the Town, we sit down with Kristen McGuinness — author, writing coach, and the fearless organizer behind the upcoming TEDx Ojai event on Sunday, February 2nd. From 10 am to 4 pm, an impressive lineup of speakers will take the stage to share thought-provoking ideas, fascinating stories, and maybe a few surprises, all with the stunning Ojai backdrop. But this conversation is much more than just a preview of the event. Kristen shares wild tales from her time in the publishing world, including working with the infamous Judith Regan during her tabloid-dominating romance with Bernie Kerik, and Kristen's role in shaping O.J. Simpson's controversial book, If I Did It. Along the way, we explore how these eyebrow-raising experiences informed Kristen's career, her perspective on storytelling, and her passion for helping others find their voice. Kristen also talks about her father's notorious career as one of America's biggest marijuana smugglers and repeat escapes from prison. Tune in for laughs, insights, and a behind-the-scenes look at both the world of TEDx and the publishing industry's most scandalous moments! We did not talk about Sacramento Delta smelt runs, the Pacific Palisades on fire or the IPO of fast fashion giant Shein. Check out more of Kristen's work at https://www.kristenmcguiness.com/

You know the Bronco chase, the trial and the glove, but do you know …the book? In 2006, O.J. Simpson teamed up with prominent publisher, Judith Regan, to make a killing from his controversial life story. With the help of a ghostwriter, they created a “hypothetical” tell-all book about the actual murders O.J. stood trial for. Thousands of copies were printed and a companion TV special was filmed. But, when news of the unsavory book surfaced, there was an uproar, leading to the cancellation of the project and a grizzly amount of lawsuits. However the story takes a surprising turn when the family of one of the victims earns the right to release the book themselves.Ericka Bozeman aka Boze (Boze vs the World) and Carl Tart (Comedy Bang! OJ Simpson died on April 10 of 2024. Many media outlets celebrated him as an American football legend, actor, sportscaster, and more. I see him as the perpetrator of the deaths of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman (allegedly, because he was tried and found not guilty). To mark OJ's death, I decided to share how the crime unfolded per OJ in his crazy book "If I Did It." To me, OJ didn't have that amazing an imagination to conjure up what he describes. To me, this is likely the truth, or perhaps 90 percent of the truth. SERIES 2 EPISODE 157: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: In the SportsCenter computer I read something that made my blood run cold. It was one line in a preliminary script for the 6:30 PM SportsCenter for Monday, June 14, 1994. O.J. Simpson's wife and a man with her had been murdered. The script noted “Simpson is NOT a suspect.” What made my blood run cold was not the news of the murders. It was that phrase. It might as well have been “of COURSE Simpson is not a suspect.” The problem was, I knew Simpson was a suspect because I had not a doubt in my mind that Simpson had butchered them because I knew what all of us who worked – or had worked – in L.A. media knew – that the O.J. Simpson known to the public, to TV audiences, movie audiences, sports audiences, was an utter fabrication. I knew he had hit his wife. I knew the authorities in Los Angeles had done nothing about it. I knew the sportscasters in Los Angeles – including me – had done nothing about it, though I wondered then and have known since that there was almost nothing WE could have done about it, legally. I called police source in L.A. and he was emphatic:: “whatever you do, DON'T say he's a suspect. We're terrified he's going to run. This guy has make-for-the-border written all over him. Or off himself maybe. But yeah, maybe…” and he had had to stop himself from laughing… “maybe you want to drop that part about NOT a suspect. Jesus. Not a suspect? HE'S OUR ONLY SUSPECT." I then had to explain it to executives - representative of the America of 1994 - who were still saying aloud "Poor O.J." There is no comparison to Simpson's fall in American history. And the system of the time was designed to protect him, the way the system of today protects similar scumbags. ALSO: The Johnson-Trump conference today was Johnson's idea and Trump is not in favor of getting rid of the Speaker. And RFK Jr gets rid of the New York staffer who admitted the campaign is about getting Trump, not Kennedy, elected. But it turns out he's got at least one more saying essentially the same thing. B-Block (26:30) IN SPORTS: It's amazing that Shohei Ohtani could have so relied on his interpreter Ippei Mizuhara that basically nobody else could talk to Ohtani, and Mizuhara could exploit that reality to secretly steal millions from him. But the FIGURES involved are twice as amazing: $16,000,000 embezzled? 19,000 bets on sporting events in three years? Gambling wins and losses totaling $325,000,000? Also America's hottest new team is the Indiana Fever, and no, there aren't more baseball pitchers being injured this year than the last ten years. C-Block (41:05) FRIDAYS WITH THURBER: A first-time story, which reads as if it was ripped from today's headlines. In his profile of his boss, discoverer, and the founder of The New Yorker Harold Ross, Thurber told of Ross's assisting, who took advantage of his boss's inattentiveness to money to embezzle the equivalent of one and a half million from him and bet most of it on sporting events. There are so many similarities it sounds as if Ohtani's interpreter used the story as an instruction manual: "The Secret Life Of Harold Winney."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Simpson's early life and meteoric rise to stardom. Examine his remarkable football career, where he became a household name, winning accolades and capturing the hearts of fans nationwide. From his record-breaking achievements on the field to his magnetic presence off it, Simpson's charisma and charm seemed to make him invincible. However, beneath the surface of his public image, darker elements would come to light. Explore the complex dynamics of O.J. Simpson's personal relationships, particularly his tumultuous marriage to Nicole Brown. Shedding light on the allegations of domestic violence that plagued their union, offering insights into the struggles and pain that Nicole endured. Examining the social climate of the time, we discuss the challenges faced by victims of domestic abuse and the prevailing attitudes that often hindered justice. Recount the events of June 12, 1994, the night that forever altered the lives of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown. The boys reconstruct the timeline leading up to the murders. The brutal and senseless nature of the crimes shocked the nation, igniting a media frenzy. Part Two of The OJ Simpson Saga. Beyond a Reasonable Doubt. The unforgettable Bronco chase, followed by the infamous murder trial, left an indelible mark on popular culture. they explore the prosecution's missteps and the defense's strategic use of the race card, shaping one of the most watched trials of all time. June 17, 1994, With news helicopters trailing O.J. Simpson's white Ford Bronco along Los Angeles freeways, the world watched in suspense. This surreal scene foreshadowed the drama that would unfold in the courtroom. The prosecution faced the challenge of proving O.J. Simpson's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. However, several missteps marred their efforts. Mishandling crucial evidence, like the ill-fitting glove Simpson tried on in court, weakened their case. The mishandling of blood samples and issues with evidence collection raised doubts about its integrity, casting doubt on the entire case. The defense, led by Johnnie Cochran, played the race card effectively, transforming the trial into a racial flashpoint. Alleging racial bias and misconduct within the police force, Cochran created doubt among jurors. The memorable line, "If the glove doesn't fit, you must acquit," tapped into societal grievances and questioned the credibility of the prosecution's case. The televised trial became a global sensation. Media coverage dissected every aspect, blurring the line between journalism and entertainment. Public opinion became deeply divided, often along racial lines. The trial symbolized broader issues of race, wealth, and privilege. Supporters believed in Simpson's innocence, while others viewed him as a guilty celebrity evading justice. Part three of "The O.J. Simpson Saga," the boys get into the aftermath of the infamous criminal trial as the focus shifts to the civil trial and a shocking robbery that further entangles O.J. Simpson in a web of controversy and legal battles. Also in this episode goes over the weird and eerie book written by OJ Simpson called "If I Did It". Including the great lengths that OJ went to divert the funds and not fulfill the judgement against him. After reports emerged that Donald Trump has spent $40 million from his campaign funds to fight his legal battles - money that came mostly from small donors - it was assumed that many of the people giving him money would be upset. Apparently not. Even small donors on fixed incomes say that they have no problem with Trump using their dollars to fight his legal battles, even if he is a billionaire that could easily afford to pay his own bills. Also,  the judges that are overseeing Donald Trump's (many) criminal trials are getting inundated with threats of violence, and unfortunately it is coming from both sides. While Trump supporters are directing most of their anger towards prosecutors and judges in New York and Georgia, some on the Left are directing threats of violence against Judge Cannon in Florida. These threats - no matter where they come from - are unacceptable. And finally, Alina Habba needs to realize that she isn't doing Donald Trump any favors when she agrees to go on TV to talk about his legal problems. On Sunday, Habba went on Fox News where she proudly proclaimed that Trump absolutely had the right to delete video footage from Mar-a-Lago, even though she says it never even happened. We've now entered the OJ Simpson "If I Did It" phase of defending Trump, and Habba is making everything so much worse for her boss.

Some of you may know me as Ron Goldman’s sister. I am. And very proud of that fact. But I am also an advocate … a writer … a mother … a friend… a daughter … a hockey, basketball and football fan …a radio show host … a shoe enthusiast … and sometimes a philanthropist. I live a very full life, despite the painful road I traveled to get here. Before my brother was brutally killed in 1994, I was studying to be a child psychologist. After his death and subsequent trials, I left that goal behind and just did what I could to make it through each day and to slowly begin to rebuild my shattered life.I worked in television for a while but then found my happy place working in the non-profit sector; where I have stayed for more than a decade. I have a passion and commitment for assisting the under-served, which has provided me with so many different opportunities. I was the Marketing Manager for Pallotta TeamWorks, which produced multi-day fundraising events such as the AVON 3Day Walks and the AIDS Rides. I was the Communications Manager for Cure Autism Now, (currently Autism Speaks) which focussed on autism research and launched the first Walk Now event in Los Angeles. I also served as the State Director for Best Buddies California, which is a non-profit organization founded by Anthony K. Shriver, dedicated to forming friendships between developmentally disabled people and non-disabled peers.Currently, I am the Executive Director of the Santa Clarita Valley Youth Project; a non-profit organization that provides free mental health, crisis intervention, support groups and education and outreach to teenagers in the Santa Clarita Valley dealing with depression, suicide, domestic violence, substance abuse, neglect, sexual assault, bullying, etc. Finally, after all of these years, I found my way back to those long-ago dreams of counseling and therapy. In my spare time, I am a victims’ advocate and have had the privilege of being a speaker at some amazing conferences; a few highlights include (1995 – 2016): Keynote Speaker for numerous National Victims Rights Week events, Parents of Murdered Children Victims Conferences, Trainer/Speaker for The Department of Justice workshops, The FBI National Academy Annual Conference, Speaker at Governor Wilson’s Conference for Women, and a guest speaker/panelist at a number of universities, media and law enforcement events across the country.Oh, and I am an accomplished writer too! I was a contributing author to the NY Times Bestseller; His Name is Ron, Our Search for Justice (1998, William Morrow & Co.) In 2007, I authored two chapters for the NY Times Bestseller; If I Did It, Confessions of the Killer. (2007, Beaufort Books). I contributed to The Ricki Lake Show, have a little corner of Huffington Post I can call my own, I’ve written articles for various newsletters and magazines, including Glamour Magazine, in 2007. I finished my memoir, Can’t Forgive in 2014 and my latest book, Media Circus, a Look at Private Tragedy in the Private Eye was released in September 2015. Both books published by BenBella Books.I am the founding Co-Chair of The Ron Goldman Foundation for Justice as well as a member of the California District Attorney’s Association, Victims Rights Committee and served on the Advisory Committee for Crime Survivors, Inc. I participated in a project called Vision 21, which is in place to revamp the victims movement, funded by the National Center for Victims of Crime (NCVC). And am now a Board Member for NCVC and an Advisory Board member for Habitat for Heroes. And most recently, I helped launch the National Compassion Fund, which helps families in mass tragedies receive donations from supporters all across the globe. In the last handful of years, I have been a guest on various media outlets, including FOX News Channel, MSNBC, CourtTV, CNN, ABC, NBC, and CBS and on programs such as Oprah, 20/20, The Today Show, Good Morning America, CBS Early Show, Dateline, Primetime Live, Dr. Phil and Larry King. I have been interviewed in multiple national magazines and newspapers such as Time, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, People, Newsweek, The Washington Post, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, and The Boston Herald.I work hard in my community, and was recognized by the Soroptimist International of Santa Clarita Valley with the Making a Difference for Women award in 2008, was honored as one of 40 under 40 Leaders by the Santa Clarita Valley Business Journal, was recognized as a Non-Profit Leader in 2014 and one of the 50 Most Influential People in 2015.And if that wasn’t enough, I launched a radio show, Broadscast with my dear friend Jackie MacDougall …which is a ton of fun!But my most important job is being a kick ass mom to a really cool kid!I hope you come back again, because I am really going to try and keep this site updated! The Goldmans didn’t get justice during the criminal trial, but the family had a second chance by filing a civil case against Simpson for the wrongful death of Ron. This time, it wouldn’t be “the People vs. Orenthal James Simpson”, it would be the Goldman’s name on the lawsuit. Kim speaks with Dan Petrocelli, the Goldman’s attorney for the lesser-known civil trial. Dan reflects on everything from his strategy in the courtroom, to the pressure he felt to win the case. Kim also speaks with Pablo Fenjves, a witness during the criminal trial who was later hired to ghostwrite Simpson’s book, If I Did It – a hypothetical account of the night of the murders. Pablo and Kim discuss how this book came to be and Pablo expresses what he learned as he wrote what was essentially a pseudo admission of guilt with Simpson.

Today, I am sitting in the St. Petersburg, Florida, dining room of popular sports writer, Peter Golenbock. Peter, who’s written many books about and with members of the New York Yankees, including: Dynasty; The Bronx Zoo, which he wrote with Sparky Lyle; Balls, written with Craig Nettles; Guidry, with Ron Guidry; Number One, written with Billy Martin; and Wild, High, and Tight, written about Billy Martin. He also co-wrote Idiot with then-Boston Red Sox player Johnny Damon; Bats, with former Mets manager Davey Johnson; Thunder and Lightning, with hockey all-star Phil Esposito; and several racing books, including NASCAR Confidential and American Zoom. You can see an entire list of Golenbock’s books at his Web site, www.GolenbockBooks.com. He has also started writing a blog at http://petergolenbock.blogspot.com/. Despite his impeccable credentials, Golenbock recently found himself in the news on the heels of a book he did not write, O. J. Simpson’s quasi-confessional, If I Did It. By coincidence. Golenbock’s latest book, 7: The Mickey Mantle Novel, a story that takes liberties with the real life of his old friend and former Bronx bomber/slugger, Mickey Mantle, was also due to be put out by Simpson’s publisher, Judith Regan. Here’s an excerpt from the book that appeared in Publisher’s Weekly - it describes a fictional encounter between Mantle and actress Marilyn Monroe: “Mickey enters her, going in nice and easy. The look on his face changes from excitement and pleasure to surprise and then disappointment. He waits for the yelling and screaming, waits for her to tell him how good it was, waits for an ‘ooh’ or an ‘ahh,’ any reaction at all, but no. While he works away at it, Marilyn just lies there staring at him with cold, accusing eyes.” In the storm that followed cancellation of Simpson’s book and Regan’s firing, Golenbock’s book was cancelled, too. But Golenbock’s book didn’t stay cancelled for long. It will be published on April 3, 2007, by Lions Press. I have asked Peter, who has been an acquaintance for many years, to join us today and talk about his controversial new book and his long career. The result is in. Judge Welch has ruled Adnan's Sixth Amendment rights were violated and he'll get a new trial...if it ever gets that far. The Crime Writers pull apart the decision and discuss where the case may go from here. Does the state have any evidence left? How would 12 Baltimore jurors (who'd never listened to a podcast) size up Adnan? And why could it be years before he gets out of jail? The panel is joined by super-professor Colin Miller, who answers questions about the legal ins-and-outs of the ruling. Then the Crime Writers take your questions and voice memos. They also discuss the dilemma of the Alford plea: would you admit your guilt to a crime you didn't commit if it gets you out of prison? Also, WTF is a jury view like at the scene of a lumber theft?
