"Are You Being Mindful – Or Is Your Mind Just Full?" In this episode, Smith & Mayhew dive headfirst into the world of mindfulness, meditation, and mental resilience — but don't worry, it's not all incense and chanting. The lads discuss how mindfulness has shaped their daily routines, the difference between healthy standards and obsessive habits, and why it's actually powerful to just sit still with your own thoughts (even if it's bloody uncomfortable). Mayhew shares insights from his recent meditation teacher training, including the teachings of Jon Kabat-Zinn, silent Zoom sessions, and the unexpected power of wiggling your fingers in a Yorkshire accent. From ADHD to mobile phone dependency, they explore how men can start taking back control of their attention and inner calm — one deep breath at a time. Warning: contains unsolicited bush trimming, poo parties, and a few spiritual epiphanies! Humanity balances between two paths: self-destruction or self-revelation. In this rebroadcast from a popular episode from April 2024, Christine Barrington describes this critical inflection point and argues that dreams awaken us to the realm of purpose and meaning, arguing that every one of us has much to contribute to the path of humanity. Christine begins with James Braid then outlines the complicated history of science and consciousness including how they got separated in the first place, culminating with the philosophy of positivism which is the belief nothing exists that cannot be verified. She notes in contrast that most of the giants of quantum theory were also mystics including Planck (mentioning his book Where Science is Going) and also Einstein, Schrödinger, Heisenberg, Bohr, and Pauli. On the thread of consciousness, she quotes Carl Jung and his work on the tension of the opposites and synchronicity, also Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ken Wilbur, and Joe Dispenza and the birth of neurophysiology and mindfulness. Christine brings it all together talking about Thomas Campbell and his book My Big TOE and his “theory of everything,” which argues that consciousness is the basis for everything and that we are here on this planet to learn and evolve that consciousness, one person at a time. She plays a quote of Campbell’s about how dreaming gives us information about our selves in that how we react in dreams is how we are. As we learn to be more living and present, then our dreams evolve too. Christine ends by sharing information about Thomas Campbell’s organization, the Center for the Unification of Science and Consciousness CUSAC.org. SYNOPSIS:This is a recording of one of our free, live Eventbrite sessions, where Ali Mezey was joined by Jane Peterson, PhD - and you, our audience - for a live, honest, body-centered conversation about the real work of being in relationship.(Yes, this episode includes live audience questions!)Together, we explore how our bodies carry old relational patterns - what Jane calls the "social soma" - and how these hidden imprints can shape the way we love, fight, and stay (or don't stay) connected. We talk about why love alone isn't always enough to align two people's lives, and why asking deeper, more honest questions early on matters so much.Jane shares practical ways to stay close even when life pulls you in different directions: evolving agreements, repairing after hurt, setting shared goals, and building intimacy that grows with you.We touch on marriage, infidelity, and non-traditional relationships with honesty and warmth, offering grounded advice for navigating real-world love.Whether you're partnered, single, or somewhere in between, this conversation will leave you with new ways to understand yourself, your relationships, and the deep intelligence of your body in all of it.To be an angel to the podcast, click hereTo read more about the podcast, click hereMORE ALI MEZEY:Website: www.alimezey.comPersonal Geometry® and the Magic of Mat Work Course information:www.alimezey.com/personal-geometry-foundationsTransgenerational Healing Films: www.constellationarts.comMORE JANE PETERSON:Website: www.human-systems-institute.comContact: humansystemsinstitute@gmail.comBIO:Jane Peterson, PhD, is the co-founder and executive director of the Human Systems Institute, Inc. Learning to accept and live with type 1 diabetes has not been a linear path in my experience. 29 years of life with type 1 diabetes and there are no hard and fast conclusions here, just a juicy subject to chew on for today's solo episode!I reflect back on my own journey to discuss how I've come to accept living with type 1 diabetes, what that looks like, the relationship I now have with type 1 diabetes and how that's changed at different points in my life. I look at the definition of acceptance as it might relate to type 1 diabetes, as well as different keys, tools and perspectives I have that have helped me equip myself for this long and bumpy ride, and in particular the fork in the road that caused me to embark on a new, quite different road to acceptance - finally allowing type 1 diabetes to travel with me in the car! Buckle up, the analogy is strong...The inspiration for this episode was a conversation I had with Natalie Balmain on the Typecast podcast, which you can find here: https://open.spotify.com/episode/6xbsZa948wKSoAFFHadivS?si=886470b1dc6b4f72This is the definition of acceptance that I mention, from Medical professor Jon Kabat-Zinn, sourced via Psychology Today. “Acceptance doesn't, by any stretch of the imagination, mean passive resignation. Quite the opposite. It takes a huge amount of fortitude and motivation to accept what is — especially when you don't like it — and then work wisely and effectively as best you possibly can with the circumstances you find yourself in and with the resources at your disposal, both inner and outer, to mitigate, heal, redirect, and change what can be changed.” As ever this is just my personal experience, nothing in the episode should be taken as medical advice and your first port of call for all things type 1 diabetes is your diabetes healthcare team. I hope you enjoy this one!JOIN THE TYPE 1 ON 1 INSTAGRAM COMMUNITY Come and say hi @studiotype1on1 on Instagram.Find me on instagram @missjengrieves.SPONSOR MESSAGE This episode of Type 1 on 1 is sponsored by Insulet, the makers of Omnipod tube-free insulin pump therapy.Using Omnipod 5 Automated Insulin Delivery has improved my diabetes management significantly with less diabetes decisions, and of course no multiple daily injections. Send us a textIn this brief episode, we explore the profound wisdom contained in the simple phrase: "Wherever you go, there you are." Made famous by Jon Kabat-Zinn's influential book on mindfulness, this statement reminds us that our choices and actions create the path we travel, for better or worse. No matter what, we find ourselves exactly where we are meant to be; in the present moment. Life's journey isn't easy. We often encounter uncertainty, face challenging circumstances, and battle internal fears about our ability to handle what comes our way. The responsibilities we carry for our loved ones can weigh heavily, causing us to struggle with making the right choices and doing what's best. When challenges mount in my own life, I find myself returning to a grounding thought from Mother Teresa: "If everyone would only sweep their own doorstep, the whole world would be clean."Key Takeaways:Change must begin with us"Sweeping our doorstep" means mental decluttering—silencing unnecessary thoughts that cloud judgmentDeep internal work and reflection are required to sit with our thoughts and assess whether they help or hinder our purposeOnly through this process can we make clearer choices and take more meaningful actionReflection Question: How are you sweeping your own doorstep in life today? What are you willing to better commit yourself to in order to make the impact on others you desire? This episode is dedicated to all of you doing your best to make the difference you desire in the world.Music Credit: Best Thing That Ever Happened (Transformers Movie)Find the song here on Apple MusicThanks for listening.

This meditation is often used in the day retreat which is part of the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) 8wk course. Engage the imagery & felt sense of being one with a basin of water. Notice how life can feel choppy and unsettled on the surface, and there is also a constant stillness beneath the surface you can anchor in as well. This meditation is calming in the moment of practice and can also can be called upon during stressful events to help anchor and ground the body and mind.

Welcome to Zen Commuter and day two of Tricycle Week! Today, we dive into an important question: Is meditation truly beneficial for young students? Across the country, schools have introduced mindfulness programs with the hope of improving focus, reducing stress, and fostering emotional well-being. But do these programs actually deliver on their promise? We'll explore key research, including insights from Emma Varvaloucas' article, Classroom Mindfulness Put to the Test, which examines the largest study to date on mindfulness in schools. Are these programs helping, or do they come with unintended consequences? Let's uncover the science behind meditation in the classroom. What if I told you that presence and mindfulness could be the key to overcoming life's most challenging bumps? Including isolation, a condition that many of us struggle with at one time or another.. Cole Baker-Bagwell found herself profoundly alone when she moved to a remote mountain town. Her isolation devolved into a profound sense of loneliness. She became depressed. Mindfulness, as Cole describes, became her lifeline. For over 30 years, she had practiced this cognitive skill, which Jon Kabat-Zinn defines as being aware in the present moment without judgment. It was through mindfulness that Cole found the strength to face her depression head-on. She shares her unique approach to dealing with difficult emotions, treating them as members of her personal “council” and engaging with them in a dialogue that fostered understanding and healing. Cole's journey back to a happy and functioning life was accompanied by support and understanding of those around her. She made significant changes in her life, effectively rewriting her story. This conversation is a story about the power of presence, mindfulness, and human connection. It's a reminder that even in our darkest moments, we have the agency to choose how we think and live. Tune in to hear Cole's inspiring story and learn how you, too, can harness the power of mindfulness to overcome life's challenges and embrace a more joyful existence. #Mindfulness #Depression #personalgrowth #inspiration What they're saying: “This is a beautiful book about life, its imperfections, its challenges, and its joys. A lecture given at L'Abri Fellowship in Southborough, Massachusetts. For more information, visit https://southboroughlabri.org/ by Mardi Keyes In the early 2000s, I participated in the Stress Reduction Program founded by the Zen Buddhist physician and author Jon Kabat-Zinn. Mindfulness meditation was central to the program. Since then, mindfulness has gone mainstream, supported by a growing body of evidence that it can be a powerful tool in treating stress, anxiety, and many other health problems. The Bible is no stranger to stress and anxiety, and it too offers wisdom for coping with them. This talk will consider places where biblical wisdom and eastern meditation overlap and where the paths divide. The Copyright for all material on the podcast is held by L'Abri Fellowship. "You Can't Stop the Waves, But You Can Learn How to Surf" I've used this Jon Kabat-Zinn quote countless times in my presentations, conversations and keynotes with leaders, with an image of Layne Beachley, seven-time world champion surfer. It is a wonderful quote and a beautiful image of an athlete in their element.I understand enough about Layne's story to know that both the element itself, the surf, and life when she isn't in her element, have been deeply challenging.Yes, her courage in competition was legendary. But it's a different kind of bravery she demonstrates now - the willingness to cross that bridge of vulnerability. The truth is clear: there's no authenticity without vulnerability, and no vulnerability without courage. There are people you meet, and you feel good about them. Then there are people you meet, and you feel good about you. Layne Beachley is the latter. From the moment we sat down to talk, she created a space where sharing her story whilst showing a deep interest in mine and those in the room, felt natural, even necessary. It's a rare gift - making others feel good about themselves through genuine care rather than convenience. The Kabat-Zinn quote speaks to something fundamental about leadership - that we can't control every challenge that comes our way, but we can develop the wisdom to navigate them. While the metaphor has always resonated, Layne Beachley's story brings its meaning to life."I'm a helper, not a healer," she says - a distinction that crystallises something profound about leadership."No one sees the shit you go through," she shares, "they just see the outcome and think it was easy." Behind those seven world titles lies a story that speaks to anyone who's found themselves in the arena, facing challenges beyond their perceived capacity to cope. Her journey illuminates the path - winning her first world title from a place of love, then five driven by fear, before returning to love for her seventh and final championship. After her sixth consecutive title, her body said 'enough' through adrenal fatigue and exhaustion. Yet still she pushed: "Let's do this again, let's keep going." It took a neck injury and MRI results to force a reckoning. Then comes the deeper truth: "I had a massive fear of rejection from being told I was adopted as an eight-year-old. The story I'd wrapped around that was that I'm worthless, I'm undeserving of love, and I must win to be worthy of love."These days, Layne talks about her "dream team" - that small group of trusted people who help her stay aligned with her truth. "If I'm encountering challenge from either of them, then I know there's something that needs to change," she explains. "But if it comes from someone I've never known and will never speak to, they're entitled to their opinion, and I'm entitled to ignore it."Her approach to sharing wisdom is illuminating: "I aim to serve. I aim to shine a light. I don't aim to tell or preach." She creates that same space of care she offers others - where authentic connection becomes possible because someone has been brave enough to go first. The metaphor of surfing carries a truth for all leaders: you can't stop the waves - those challenges and moments of doubt will come. But you can learn how to surf them.Layne Beachley shows that our greatest impact often comes not from having all the answers, but from sharing our struggles with generosity and hope. In choosing to be a helper rather than a healer, she demonstrates what authentic leadership looks like - creating space for others to find their own path while continuing to learn and grow ourselves. This is what a relationship of care looks like. It's what leadership at its best can be.

All the links - LINKTR.EE/BARBARAFAISON If you're new to the podcast, welcome, and if you listen regularly, thank you. This is an episode about how to use mindfulness and meditation to struggle less and enjoy life more.I've shared how the first M, music changes your brain chemistry and the power of the words we think and speak out loud, using our mouth, the second M. The third M, is actually two, well sort of, meditation & mindfulness. What's the difference between those two? I like this description from an article I read recently stating one of the differences is meditation is a practice, and through this practice, one can develop different qualities, including mindfulness. As a practice you can also focus on an object, thought or activity to train your awareness. Mindfulness is a type of meditation and per Jon Kabat Zinn it is “the awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally.”Let's jump into the excerpt from Five Mindful Ways to Struggle Less and Enjoy Life More. You will hear more from Jon Kabat Zinn and research on mindfulness. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/barbara-faison/support

Emphasizing the profound impact this work has had on my own journey through anxiety, I explore how mindfulness meditation serves as a powerful tool not only for pain relief but also for managing anxiety and stress. I highlight Kabat-Zinn's illustrious background as the founder of the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Clinic, where his insights stem from a deep-rooted Buddhist practice. While his teachings do not explicitly teach Buddhism, the foundations of his mindfulness practice are steeped in its principles, allowing him to articulate his messages with remarkable clarity. The essence of today's discussion revolves around the parallels between pain and anxiety, suggesting that the journey to understanding and alleviating both conditions is intrinsically linked. Central to our dialogue is the importance of disciplined practice. I emphasize Kabat-Zinn's assertion that mindfulness must be treated as a daily discipline rather than a sporadic endeavor. It's crucial to establish a strong foundation in meditation before integrating mindfulness into other activities in life, such as running or yoga. Only then can we truly harness the benefits of mindfulness as a consistent practice and utilize it to navigate daily stressors effectively. I draw attention to key concepts presented in Chapter Six of Kabat-Zinn's book, focusing on the necessity of consistent mindfulness practice. He likens mindfulness to physical exercise, advocating for long-term commitment and resilience rather than immediate results. The discussion includes insights on developing a compassionate relationship with both anxiety and pain by learning to accept and sit with discomfort rather than resist it. This is rebroadcasting of an episode with Juditta Ben-David.This is what it's about--passion, heart and helping others. And today, my guest exudes all of those elements. Today, I'm speaking with Juditta Ben-David, SEP M.A., founder of The Mindfulness in Arabic project (MiA).MiA has built a website that offers an eight-week Mindfulness course in Arabic, designed for refugees and people in transition. Any person with internet access may enter the website, free of charge, anywhere around the world. The course provides practical tools and exercises tailored specifically to support a shaken population that suffered traumas of fear, death and extreme violence. Juditta's website also provides tools for therapists, social workers, welfare workers, and volunteers who are currently working with refugee populations, so that they may use mindfulness-based tools for their own needs in coping with work stress and related DP camp difficult experiences, as well as passing them on to their clients.MiA developed out of the work of our founder, Juditta Ben-David, SEP M.A, in refugee camps in Turkey. Working there with refugees and their supporters/counselors and social-workers the request for additional tools led to a crowdfunding campaign raising one-half of the funds needed to launch our 8-week course. MiA is thankful to be supported by leading Mindfulness instructors like Jon Kabat Zinn, Jack Kornfield, Tara Brach, Christopher Titmuss and Patricia Genoud-Feldman as well as Mindfulness providers like Headspace and Mindful Magazine. “Children themselves are innately mindful. It takes a parent who's preoccupied in constant activity to teach them not to be that way.” Turns out our kids are already pretty great at practicing mindfulness— that is, until we get in the way... Ouch. This week, Mindfulness expert and therapist, Dallin Bruun, helps us parents re-learn to pay attention. To it all. To life. To the people around us. And even to all emotion… emotions we often label as good or bad, right or wrong. Dallin studied under Jon Kabat-Zinn (aka. the godfather of modern mindfulness) at Umass Medical and holds a litany of other titles and credentials. He is full of so much unpretentious wisdom and real life, real human experience. We discuss how mindfulness helps us stop being dead inside, how to stop judging and labeling emotions. And how to begin acknowledging all emotion, all our whole selves with compassion. We all need this. Our kids need this from us. So please join us for our first episode of season 2— with guest expert & Mindfulness Master, Dallin Bruun. https://findingnoble.com/ Please rate, review and subscribe if you'd like. As they delved deeper into the teachings of the book, they discovered a profound sense of inner serenity and connectedness to the world around them.In the end, they realized that true peace could be found not in the chaos of the outside world, but within themselves, through the practice of mindfulness.
