This week on Talking Triathlon we react to the biggest shake-up the T100 has seen yet, as the series announces massive changes to its 2026 format. We discuss what the removal of athlete contracts could mean for the future of professional racing, how splitting the season into four standalone men's and four standalone women's races could impact broadcast numbers, and whether increased per-event prize money will be enough to drive interest and secure top-tier fields. We then move into race coverage, where Hayden Wilde and Kate Waugh delivered commanding wins at the T100 Wollongong. But it was the WTCS racing that stole the spotlight. In the women's race, both Cassandre Beaugrand and Beth Potter struggled and saw their world title hopes fade, while Lisa Tertsch produced an incredible performance to win on the day and secure the world championship. In the men's race, Matt Hauser capped off a perfect season, becoming World Champion and delivering Australia's first WTCS world title since 2005. We finish the episode by looking ahead to the 70.3 World Championship start lists and the athletes who could shape the world title battle. The aging athlete's journey doesn't have to mean inevitable decline. In this reflective episode, Simon and Bethany Ward revisit September's most impactful conversations, distilling key lessons from their discussions with running coaches Bobby McGee and Matt Pendola, plus Lucy Hurn's inspiring Iron Man journey through menopause. From proprioception and fast-twitch muscle loss to hormonal chaos and identity questions, this episode tackles the real challenges facing athletes over 50 - and more importantly, the proven solutions that can keep you strong, durable, and competitive for decades to come.   Quote of the Episode "70% of what we call aging is about inactivity. The areas where you've made the biggest losses over time are the areas where you can make the biggest gains." - Bobby McGee   Key Talking Points The Proprioception Problem - Why losing your "feel" for the ground costs you speed and how to restore it Fast-Twitch Muscle Recovery - he 5-10% per decade loss isn't permanent if you train smart Broken Endurance Strategy - Bobby McGee's run-walk approach for better performance Training Through Menopause - Lucy Hearn's practical advice for navigating hormonal chaos Identity vs. Performance - Are you still an athlete without a race on the calendar? The Minimum Effective Dose - How little training can still deliver results as you age   Key Takeaways Listen to your body and respect its signals - Fatigue from hormones feels different than training fatigue Eat more protein - Your body becomes less efficient at processing it as you age Do what makes you uncomfortable - Avoid only the "safe" training you've always done Start with mobility, then stability, then strength - Build your foundation before adding power Be flexible with your training plans - Consistency matters more than perfection Focus on what you can control - Sleep routines, nutrition timing, and recovery habits   Practical Applications Try the cross-hopping drill to assess your proprioception Implement run-walk intervals in training and racing Include 4-6 rep strength work with longer rest periods Track symptoms to identify patterns during hormonal changes Prioritise protein at every meal, especially during menopause   If you want listen to the full podcast conversations, here are the links, Bobby McGee & Matt Pendola - Part 1 - Why running performance declines so fast after 50 Bobby McGee & Matt Pendola - Part 2 - Solutions for maintaining running speed after 50 Lucy Hurn - Qualifying for Kona through the menopause Beth & Simon Ward - Are you still an athlete if you have no races on the calendar   The SWAT Inner Circle is now open. The government has announced an independent inquiry into repeated failings in maternity services at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. Earlier this year, a BBC investigation revealed that the deaths of at least 56 babies and two mothers over the past five years at the Trust could perhaps have been avoided. BBC correspondent Divya Talwar joins Nuala McGovern, alongside Lauren Caulfield and Amarjit Kaur Matharoo, who both tragically lost their babies while receiving care at Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust. This month, the Ironman World Championships were held in Kona, Hawaii, where Britain's Kat Matthews won silver. The men's and women's championships, previously held simultaneously, were split into separate events in 2023. However, they are set to reunite next year. Questions have been raised about the impact this change may have on female competitors. To discuss the championships and celebrate Kat's achievement, Nuala is joined by Kat Matthews and Jordan Blanco, a contributor to Triathlete magazine who attended the event. A new report reveals that progress towards gender equity in the architecture profession still remains too slow. Inequalities remain deeply rooted — with pay disparities, toxic and exclusionary workplace cultures, and half of female respondents surveyed said they had been bullied, and a third had experienced sexual harassment at work. Nuala hears from Valerie Vaughan-Dick, Chief Executive of Royal Institute of British Architects, and Helen Lee who was the project architect on a social housing development in London for the elderly which has just won this year's Stirling Prize for Architecture. The Essex witch trials represent one of the darkest chapters in British history. A new Sky History series, Witches of Essex, revisits the real lives of women accused of witchcraft in the 16th and 17th centuries, drawing on newly examined court records and the latest historical research. Historian Dr Eleanor Janega joins Nuala to discuss.Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Dianne McGregor

Plus, we catchup with the whirlwind journey of Matthew Marquardt, a med student who's also a triathlon sensation. With a season filled with victories, including a dazzling performance at the World Championships, Matthew shares the gritty reality behind the glamour of triathlon fame. From the grueling training schedules to the unexpected cramping that could rival any medical mystery, he takes us behind the scenes of his life as he balances studies and races. The conversation turns to the dramatic events at Kona, where high stakes and even higher temperatures led to heartbreaking moments for some of the sport's best women. Matthew reflects on the emotional rollercoaster that these athletes endured and what it truly means to compete at such a high level under extreme conditions. The dynamic between the race's history in Kona versus Nice is also a hot topic, highlighting the different styles of racing that favor various types of athletes. But it's way more than that - it's a community of experts and enthusiasts who share knowledge on everything sports science related. To become part of that, become a Patron of the site and join the conversationShow notesThis week on Spotlight, we dive DEEP into the world of physiology, pacing, fatigue and the brain. Using some enthralling races from Kona and Chicago at the weekend, and your Discourse questions and comments, we explore how pacing 'errors' happens, and the physiological consequences of those mistakes. We kick off of with our Discourse Digest segment (00:00) and news that Femke Bol will take a swing at the 800m next year. An exciting development, but what will it involve in terms of training and tactics, and what can we expect from the Dutch star?We then move on to the Chicago Marathon (15:56), won by Jacob Kiplimo, emerging as a real star of the Marathon. His success contained a very specific type of "failure" though, as he was on course to break the World Record right up to 35km, and then...physiology hit. Ross explains how fragile pacing is for elite marathoners, and why physiology collected on its 'loan' for Kiplimo. Another physiological "failure" happened in the Kona Ironman (29:26) where Lucy Charles-Barclay and Taylor Knibb raced so aggressively that they first rode and then ran each other to the point of proverbial physiological destruction. We explore how pacing in the context of a warm day caused those dramatic scenes. In Centre Stage (44:57), it's all about the carbs. Tim Noakes has a paper arguing that you need only 10g/h of glucose during exercise. He uses his "Central Governor" model to explain how the brain is monitoring and regulating blood glucose level to protect the brain, such that the 90g per hour or more being consumed by elites is wasteful and unnecessary, part of an 'old model'. We don't see it the same way, and Ross explains concepts of regulation of performance by the brain, a subject he did his PhD thesis on. We discuss heat, altitude, and fuel, to unpack how the truth behind fatigue, performance and pacing regulation, unlocking more insight on those pacing implosions in Chicago and Kona.In Ross Replies (1:06:59), listener Ian asks a great question about using data from a specific test where you lie down then stand up, and use HR to tell you how recovered you are. Ross explains why that test exists, its limitations, and offers tips for how to make more of data, while avoiding some traps. And Finally (1:21:31), we see again that cycling is allergic to the truth, Gareth learns the truth about NZ Rugby Representation, and we tip our hats to Natalie Grabow.LinksA race report from that dramatic Kona women's raceThe full Taylor Knibb statementThe Noakes TweetRoss' PhD thesis on Anticipatory RegulationArticle on orthostatic testing for HR and HRVThe Six who Sat podcast that Gareth mentioned on the show Hosted on Acast. In the final pre-race episode from Kona, host Matt Lieto sits down with three more top contenders: the relaxed and ready India Lee, Kona rookie Solveig Løvseth, and defending IRONMAN World Champion Laura Philipp.First, India Lee shares her dramatically different approach to this year's championship. Contrasting her current fun-loving, lighthearted mindset with the stress she felt at last year's race in Nice, she explains why surrounding herself with a great group of friends is key to her performance. As a Kona first-timer, her primary goal is to finish, embrace the experience, and learn as much as possible for the future.Next, Solveig Løvseth discusses her incredible debut year in long-course triathlon. After a spontaneous decision to switch from short-course racing, she reflects on what she's learned from her first two IRONMAN events and how she has recovered from the grueling effort. With her coach Mikal Iden guiding her, Solveig is excited to be part of the sport's growth and hopes to execute her own patient race plan on Saturday. Finally, defending World Champion Laura Philipp talks about the "very special" feeling of returning to Kona wearing bib number one. To avoid the burnout that can follow a championship season, she has raced a lighter, more strategic schedule this year, allowing her to arrive fresh and focused. Preparing for what she expects to be a "lonely chase race," Laura has also implemented a more rigorous heat-training protocol for the first time, hoping it will be the key to defending her title on the island.

She reveals her love for reading as a key distraction, sharing that her current non-fiction pick is Mastery. Taylor reflects on the “naivety” that helped her in her first Kona race and discusses how a humbling experience at IRONMAN Texas has given her a “healthy dose of fear and respect” for the distance. While she remains focused on her own process, she shares a key tactical insight learned from Daniela Ryf's 2018 course record: the race can be won on the challenging return from Hawi.Next, first-time Kona competitor Lisa Perterer shares her excitement about finally experiencing the legendary race atmosphere. The Austrian powerhouse, who thrives in hot and humid conditions, is hoping for a challenging day. Lisa reflects on a tough past year and how she has rediscovered the joy in racing, an attitude that was on full display when she received a penalty at IRONMAN Lake Placid but continued to smile and wave to the crowd. While she still has goals of a top-five or even a podium finish, her primary focus is on having a “solid day” to defend her third-place position in the IRONMAN Pro Series standings.

She reveals that she was dealing with hidden "post traumatic stress" from her near-fatal accident, which led to irrational fear and ultimately contributed to her race-day struggles. Now, having worked through that trauma, she returns to the island feeling happy, confident, and prepared. With her training numbers better than ever, Kat is motivated by the rising level of competition and is unequivocally here with one goal in mind: to win.Next, Chelsea Sodaro discusses her "really crazy year" of setbacks, including catching "every preschool virus one can get" from her daughter and suffering a torn calf. These challenges forced her to make a gritty, late-season trip to IRONMAN Kalmar in Sweden to validate her spot, an experience she describes as incredibly difficult. Despite the lack of consistency in her preparation, Chelsea reflects on her identity as a gritty, determined athlete who always gives everything on race day, and she is ready to do the same on the island that "makes me feel alive."

In this episode from Kona, host Matt Lieto sits down with three athletes with incredible stories: defending World Champion Lucy Charles-Barclay, the resilient Lotte Wilms, and breakout star Marjolaine Pierré.First, Lucy Charles-Barclay reflects on returning to the island as the reigning champion, a title that has lifted a “massive weight” off her shoulders and allows her to race with less pressure. She opens up for the first time about the severity of the injury she sustained during her 2023 victory—a 14cm calf tear that left her in "agony" with every stride but gave her a new level of mental and physical resilience. After her most consistent and healthy year of training to date, Lucy is confident and excited to see what she can do on race day.Next, Lotte Wilms shares the story of her challenging season, which began with a debilitating bout of shingles—an illness she had never even heard of before. She details her methodical, 12-week recovery process and how she has managed subsequent health issues while preparing for Kona away from the distractions on the island of Maui. Despite the setbacks, Lotte is focused on finishing her race and seeing what she is capable of on Saturday. Finally, Marjolaine Pierré talks about the powerful emotions of racing in Kona for the first time, a place that feels like a "hometown race" due to its similarity to her childhood home on Reunion Island. In a heartfelt moment, she reveals that her training partner, Lucy Charles-Barclay, was her original role model and the reason she started triathlon. Marjolaine also shares her unique mindset on performance, explaining how she has learned to "love more suffering" to find the "flow" where magic can happen on the race course.
