When the road tilts upward, smart gearing can make or break your climb. Whether you're grinding up a 5% incline or crawling up a brutal 15%, choosing the right gear ratio is key to maintaining an efficient cadence—ideally around 80 RPM. Here's a breakdown of ideal gear inches and recommended chainring/cassette combinations for gradients from 5% to 15%. Gear Inches Table | BikeCalc Takeaway Tips: Lower gear inches help maintain cadence on steeper grades. A compact crankset (e.g., 34/50T) paired with a wide-range cassette (up to 31T or 32T) gives you the flexibility to tackle tough climbs. For gradients above 12%, consider a granny gear setup or even a 1x drivetrain with a wide-range cassette. Get Gritty Tip: The Four Agreements Get Gritty Tip: Master Your Mindset with The Four Agreements This week, let's talk about The Four Agreements—a powerful framework for living with intention, resilience, and clarity. These four simple principles can help us break free from limiting beliefs and live with more purpose in both triathlon and life. 1. Be Impeccable with Your Word. Your words create your reality. In triathlon, this means speaking positively to yourself and others. When you talk about your abilities, your goals, and your progress, choose words that empower and uplift. If you say, “I can do this,” you're setting yourself up for success. But if you tell yourself “I'll never get faster” or “This is too hard,” you're building mental barriers. Choose words that propel you forward. 2. Don't Take Anything Personally. People's opinions and reactions are a reflection of them, not you. In triathlon, you'll face challenges, setbacks, and criticism, whether it's a tough race, a hard workout, or someone questioning your pace. But remember: It's not about you. Their words and actions are influenced by their own journey. Instead of letting it derail you, stay focused on your own path, goals, and growth. 3. Don't Make Assumptions. We often create stories in our minds about what others think of us or what we think is happening in a race or workout. But assumptions only hold us back. Instead, ask questions, seek clarity, and stay open-minded. Don't assume you know the outcome of a race or a workout before you even begin. Focus on the process, not the assumptions. 4. Always Do Your Best. This one's simple but powerful: give everything you have in each moment. Whether it's an interval, a long ride, or an intense swim, always give your best effort. And remember, your best changes from day to day. Some days you'll have more energy, and some days will feel like a struggle. But as long as you show up and give your best, you are making progress. Action Item: Apply The Four Agreements to your training this week. Focus on the words you use, let go of external opinions, stay clear of assumptions, and always do your best. This simple mindset shift will help you approach both your triathlon journey and life with more clarity, resilience, and grit. TriDot Workout of the Week: Functional Threshold Power Today's workout is a Functional Threshold Test (20-minute) Session Note Conducting time trial (TT): Goal is to hold pace you can sustain for the entire TT without blowing up early or having enough left to kick at the end. 10 min @ Z2 with 3 x 30 sec (30 sec) Spinups and 3 x 1 min (1 min) @ Z4 20 min - all out maximal effort Be sure to enter/confirm your assessment results to update your training intensities and race projections. Which three mountain passes are included in the full Triple Bypass route? A) Juniper, Loveland, Vail B) Independence, Kenosha, Red Mountain C) Monarch, Cottonwood, Hoosier Answer: A) Juniper, Loveland, Vail — These iconic Colorado climbs define the course. What would you do if your greatest challenge became your greatest calling? For brothers Kyle and Brent Pease, the answer is racing—together. But what they've built goes far beyond the finish line. In this powerful episode, I sit down with Kyle and Brent Pease, co-founders of the Kyle Pease Foundation and Ironman finishers many times over, to talk about what it means to redefine possibility. What began as one race turned into a mission: to make endurance sports more inclusive, and to empower people with disabilities to find their own version of greatness. We dive into the early moments that sparked their journey, how they've now completed 150+ races together, and how their work through the foundation is transforming lives—not just through sport, but through employment, leadership, and connection. Kyle opens up about the physical toll of racing 16-hour days from a wheelchair, while Brent shares the emotional impact of being pushed—literally and figuratively—by his brother's unwavering drive. We talk about their unforgettable races at Kona and Boston, the birth of their inclusive employment program, and the moving story of how “five more feet” kept them going when everything inside told them to stop. At the heart of their message is a simple but transformative belief: endurance creates resilience, and everyone deserves to feel the power of crossing their own finish line. Meet Our Guests: Kyle & Brent Pease Brent and Kyle Pease are brothers, elite endurance athletes, and co-founders of The Kyle Pease Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting inclusion for individuals with disabilities in both sports and the workforce. Their story gained global recognition when they became the first push-assist brother team to complete the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. Since then, they've competed in over 150 races together, becoming a symbol of what's possible when determination and brotherhood collide. Kyle, born with cerebral palsy, has shattered limitations and expectations. With a degree in Sports Management from Kennesaw State University, he not only races with Brent but also works part-time at Publix and Atlanta Braves games, spreading his message of resilience and inclusion. Through the Foundation, Kyle plays a key role in initiatives like adaptive sports equipment, inclusive employment, and scholarships, empowering others with disabilities to chase their goals. Brent, a Florida State University graduate and seasoned endurance coach, serves as the Foundation's Executive Director. His leadership has fueled programs like the Inclusive Employment Program, which helps individuals with disabilities secure meaningful work. Brent's athletic achievements, combined with his passion for advocacy, have helped raise over $10 million for the cause. Together, the Pease brothers continue to inspire through their racing, public speaking, and book, Beyond the Finish, which tells the story of their journey, their mission, and the power of relentless determination. What You'll Learn in this Episode: How a single question sparked a life-changing partnership What it takes to complete an Ironman as a team when a wheelchair is involved, why inclusion in sport must go beyond labels and accommodations The moment Kyle realized his story could empower others How the Kyle Pease Foundation is creating jobs, purpose, and possibility The surprising power of “just five more feet” Why your struggles are not in the way—they are the way How real leadership is about showing up—for yourself and for others What Kona and Boston taught them about grace, grit, and growth Resources & Links Kyle & Brent Pease Book: Beyond the Finish: A Story of Passion, Brotherhood and Relentless Determination Get a signed copy: Order through their site to receive Kyle's signature! This week I'm joined by swim coach and author Paul Eaglestone, whose new book Freespeed offers a simple but powerful approach to improving front crawl technique — especially for triathletes. Paul shares insights from a lifetime in swimming, including his early coaching work with Olympic triathlon champion Alex Yee, and why he believes most triathletes can find "free speed" in the water through better technique, not harder work. From hydrodynamics and stroke mechanics to the role of kicking, turns, and even dryland training, this conversation is packed with practical advice for swimmers of all abilities — whether you're tackling your first sprint triathlon or chasing a Kona slot. What You'll Learn: Why Paul prioritises efficiency over intensity — especially for triathletes How he helped Alex Yee become a smooth and confident swimmer The importance of stroke count as a metric for swim progress What triathletes can learn from elite swim training — and what they should ignore Why drills, kicking, and even tumble turns matter for open water performance How to use "target pace" training for real, measurable swim improvements Paul's take on mobility, strength training, and the ideal swim training mix Open water training tips: how much is enough and what to practise Grab the Book: Freespeed by Paul Eaglestone – available now Connect with Paul: Find Paul on social media or Zwift. As the "Kona" of ultra running, it only seemed appropriate to juxtapose Western States with the Ironman World Champs.

IRONMAN has updated its age group qualifying process for both the IRONMAN and 70.3 World Championship events from 2026 onwards, and there is much to unpack and understand. As the #1 ranked coaching service in Kona 2024 we try to explain how it all works and even simulate some recent races to better explain how it would look. Why? ‘Based on athlete feedback and our own due diligence, we believe the new approach is even more consistent with our principle that the most competitive athletes are recognized and rewarded with qualifying slots. In the prior system, qualifying slots rolled down within gender and age group, and the number of slots allocated to each gender and age group was based on how many people were racing within that gender and age group. In some cases, highly competitive athletes were unable to earn a slot because their age group or gender was under-represented in a race. In contrast, some athletes who were less competitive relative to their age group would earn a slot because their age group was over-represented and thus had more slots allocated to it. In the new system, we rank athletes based on their relative performance (vs. their age-group), and irrespective of age or gender, the most competitive athletes on race day receive qualifying slots until all available slots for that race are claimed.' We all know veterans who have battled the transition from military service to civilian life. Nick Koumalatsos was a Marine raider who can certainly speak to that. After discharging from the military after 12 years of service, he battled that adjustment, going through divorce, bankruptcy, and even serious thoughts of suicide. It took him many years to figure out a formula that would work for him to pull himself out of these abysses. But throughout his life, Nick had always been seeking an angle to move up in the world. This led him to start his first business, and he's now run multiple businesses. The one that gets him most fired up is Johnny Slicks, which makes organic personal grooming products right here in the USA. Nick describes how they have created a strong family-like company atmosphere as they do all production and distribution in-house instead of farming these aspects out. He has also founded Core Medical Group, whose differentiator is providing personal care and service for men who need to determine whether they should explore testosterone replacement therapy. He's also created a transformative coaching group called Agoge that currently includes men from ages 17 to 74. It's a very hands-on community to help men overcome challenges. The lessons include Mastering Yourself, Leading Your Family, Mastering Your Finances where Nick shares what the wealthy don't tell the rest of us about, and Leaders Creating More Leaders – creating your own legacy. He has put a tremendous number of resources and lessons on his website, nickkoumalatsos.com including a free course well worth checking out. Related to this, Nick is leading a retreat in Kona in October for those who feel stuck in life or having a lot of stops and starts that prevent them from making progress. If that's all not enough, he's helping add his Marine experience to the production of the upcoming Punisher movie. You'll be able to feel Nick's abundant energy in this chat and learn a lot about how you can take control of your own inaction and/or overcome serious challenges like Nick did to create a fulfilling life helping others in myriad ways.Nick Koumalatsosnickkoumalatsos.cominfo@nickkoumalatsos.comInstagram and Threads @nickkoumalatsosFacebook Nick KoumalatsosBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram and Threads @stahlor and @we_are_superman_podcastYouTube We Are Superman PodcastPlease support Team Leadville and Warriors' Ascent help prevent veteran suicide! This week we cover the latest in triathlon, starting with a pretty wild story... Oscar Pistorius was on the start list for 70.3 Durban. We break down how it happened, the reaction it sparked, and whether there's any place for him in the sport. Lionel Sanders is back and setting his sights on a big performance in Nice. We talk about his mindset shift and why we'd love to see him go all-in on 70.3 Worlds. Eagleman 70.3 delivered exciting racing, with Sam Long just getting the better of Trevor Foley and Lucy Charles-Barclay holding Chelsea Sodaro at bay from start to finish. We preview Ironman Cairns, where Brayden Currie, Mike Phillips and Jamie Riddle lead the men's field, and Jackie Herring and Hannah Berry are set for a great race on the women's side. There's also a quick look at what to expect from Ironman Austria. To wrap things up, we dive into the PTO Vancouver start lists. The women's race features Taylor Knibb and Lucy Charles-Barclay, with Maya Kingma possibly ready to shake things up. In the men's field, Marten Van Riel looks back to his best, Rico Bogen is riding high after San Francisco, and Jelle Geens adds even more depth. In this heart-forward episode of Fatherhood Field Notes, host Ned Schaut sits down with Hawaii-born real estate pro and former touring musician, Chris Stimac, to unpack the power of presence, partnership, and purpose in fatherhood. From the stage lights of Europe to the ocean tides of Kona, Chris opens up about choosing intentional family life over fame—and how that one choice redefined his success. Together, Ned and Chris explore how fatherhood calls men to show up, lead by example, and invite their kids into their world, not hide work from them. With wisdom rooted in real-life, this conversation hits on the joys of raising curious, adventurous kids, the sacred rhythm of communication with your spouse, and why letting your kids watch you work might be one of the most powerful things a dad can do. Live(ish) from a remote Airbnb near Cambridge, Maryland, Lisa Becharas and Garrick Loewen dive into the chaos of travel mishaps, back-to-back racing, and what it takes to survive (and fund) the pro triathlon circuit. Lisa recaps her rough-but-rewarding T100 San Francisco experience, previews racing three weekends in a row, and the crew debates excessively early Kona predictions. Garrick shares his consistent finish in Brazil, monster training blocks, and goals for Eagleman 70.3. They debate: Why staying 40 minutes from a race might not be the worst call Whether Race Ranger is fixing draft dynamics or making things worse If Ironman is still king compared to T100's cash and coverage The insane 2:38 and 2:40 women's Ironman marathon times and what it means for the future And why some top pros just don't care about Kona With hot takes, tactical insights, and a few “pass or smash” moments (like using maple syrup as race fuel), it's a classic Real Triathlon Pod hangout.
This week we cover a huge few days in triathlon. Rico Bogen takes the win at T100 San Francisco, while Julie Derron puts together a brilliant performance to beat Taylor Knibb in the women's race. At Ironman Hamburg, Laura Philipp runs a stunning 2 hour 38 marathon to beat Kat Matthews and set a new Ironman world record. WTCS Alghero delivered high drama with Cassandre Beaugrand bouncing back from injury to take the win and Miguel Hidalgo navigating a chaotic race to come out on top. At Ironman Brasil, Manoel Messias impressed with a 2 hour 26 marathon. We also discuss the news that Will McCloy has officially joined the Ironman commentary team and reflect on what was, for the most part, a weekend of genuinely solid triathlon broadcasts.

Bianca Fernandez-Clark is a 7x Ironman finisher, Chair, and co-founder of Women in Tri UK, a charity on a mission to bring more women into triathlon and break down barriers in the sport. With no background in sport, Bianca laced up her trainers at age 29 to tackle a 10km as a way to manage her mental health. From there, she progressed to marathons and, in 2016, took on the challenge of learning to swim and cycle to complete her first triathlon. As a Black/mixed-race woman, Bianca has been vocal about the lack of diversity in triathlon, especially at long-distance events, and has worked to highlight the barriers faced by the Black community in accessing swimming. In 2022, she co-founded Women in Tri UK, and the organisation has been growing ever since, working hard to make triathlon more inclusive and accessible for women everywhere. By day, Bianca works full-time in the financial sector, but every spare moment is dedicated to continuing her own triathlon journey and supporting the work of Women in Tri UK. *** New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast drop every Tuesday at 7 AM (UK time)! This week on In The Vet’s Office, Dr. Josie Horchak steps out of the clinic and into the home of Lauren Akins—author, philanthropist, and wife of country star Thomas Rhett—for a heartwarming conversation about life with kids and animals. Lauren opens up about juggling motherhood with four little ones, two dogs (Kona and Cash), barn cats, and a spirited mustang. Lauren shares how her dog Cash became her constant companion during pregnancy—and how a freak accident with a pumpkin stem nearly cost him his life. She also reflects on her journey into horse ownership, including the injury that came with it, and the lasting impact a traumatic dog park incident had on her pup Kona. It’s a touching, candid episode filled with stories about the unbreakable bond between animals and their humans—and the wild things that happen when you open your heart (and home) to a full house of furry friends.
