At the Boston Marathon, Brent was drowning. Miles from the finish. Physically spent. Mentally gone. He screamed at his brother: "Are you going to race with me today?" Kyle can't push the pedals. Brent can't find the finish line without him. That's not a limitation. That's the entire point. Brent and Kyle Pease have completed Ironmans, marathons, and the Ironman World Championship in Kona, together. But this conversation goes far beyond racing. It's about what 15 years of partnership, mission, and asking for help actually teaches you about leadership, trust, and building something that serves more than yourself. What You'll Learn In This Episode: How a childhood Challenger Baseball moment became the blueprint for everything they built What it really means to race as a "we" and how that translates to business Why motivation follows action, not the other way around What emotional maturity had more to do with breaking records than training The leadership definitions from Brent and Kyle that replace 35 books How to navigate obstacles by shrinking the world cone by cone Why asking for help is a competitive advantage, not a weakness How the Kyle Pease Foundation's employment program is redefining meaningful work for people with disabilities Key Takeaways: ✔️"I borrowed his legs. He borrowed my spirit." Neither can finish without the other and that's not a weakness. It's the model. ✔️Motivation follows action. It's fickle after a rah-rah speech. It's lasting when you create movement first. ✔️Leadership isn't the loudest voice. It's the willingness to be vulnerable, listen before speaking, and get out of the way so others can rise. ✔️Asking for help is a daily practice. Kyle has done it every day of his life out of necessity and it's the single most powerful lesson he's given the people around him. ✔️Shrink the world. In an Ironman, in a nonprofit, in a business, you don't run 140.6 miles. You run to the next cone. ✔️You're not building it for yourself. From day one, someone told them: congratulations, you're in business now, for somebody else. That became their north star. ✔️Everyone has a team. Even a solopreneur has a team, it's just your spouse, your kids, your church, the people who believe in you. ✔️Every step you take matters to more than just you. Welcome back to part two of our Money Mindset Conversation! Today, I'm sitting down once again with endurance and mindset coach Jennifer Vollmann to dive deep into a topic that so many of us try to avoid: our relationship with debt. Debt can feel like a heavy, nasty word that gets instantly tangled up with our personal identity and self-worth. In this episode, Jennifer breaks down why numbers on a computer screen feel so personal, how shame can completely freeze our business progress, and how we can systematically rewrite the stories we tell ourselves about what we owe. We also discuss a powerful concept that got Jennifer to the Ironman World Championships: borrowing belief from a coach or mentor until you can build your own evidence. Key Takeaways Numbers are Neutral: A figure like $50,000 is just data on a screen. It doesn't have power until your brain attaches a narrative to it. The Danger of Shame: Shame is the ultimate stalling emotion. When we internalize debt as a personal failure, we freeze, avoid the numbers, and stop taking action. The Micro-Action Formula: Overcoming financial overwhelm starts with taking one small action within 24 hours to give your brain immediate feedback and build proof. Borrowing Belief: When you can't see a path to financial freedom yourself, it is entirely okay to borrow the unwavering belief of your coach or mentor while you take the initial steps. Episode Highlights What Are You Making the Numbers Mean? Jennifer explains how quickly our brains assign meaning to a number. Seeing a credit card balance or loan statement triggers an immediate thought (e.g., "This is too big"), which creates an emotion (overwhelm), drives a behavior (stalling/avoidance), and reinforces the original negative result. Unraveling Your Debt Patterns Are you prone to freezing, over-delivering to overcompensate, or falling into the compare and despair trap? We look at how our internal debt stories sabotage other parts of our businesses—like stopping us from pricing our services at what we are actually worth. The 24-Hour Micro-Action I share a powerful exercise I use with my own coaching clients: writing down every single piece of debt with absolute honesty. No hiding, no lying to yourself. Putting a name and a number to everything on a single piece of paper stops the energy suck of the numbers swirling endlessly in your head. Can You Borrow Belief From Someone Else? Jennifer and I discuss how she used borrowed belief from her athletic coach to train for Kona before she ever believed it was possible herself. We talk about how to apply this to your finances—using the proof of a system or a coach's belief in you as a stepping stone to take action. Insights From Jennifer "Somebody with $50,000 in debt might feel it's not a problem at all, while somebody with $5,000 in debt is completely crushed by it every single day. The debt is just a neutral circumstance. It is just a monetary figure. You get to decide what the story is." "If you find yourself in deep shame with debt, the first thing to do is see if you can get to a slightly better thought. Even reminding yourself, 'Good people also have debt,' helps disconnect your intrinsic self-worth from your ability to run a business."

#AlohaPodcast #Ironman #IronmanHawaii #Kona #RoadToKona #Triathlon #Triathlete #TriathlonLife #SwimBikeRun #EnduranceSports #Training #Performance #Mindset #CoachAthlete #RaceDay #IronmanTraining #TriathlonPodcast #Kona2026 #EliteTriathlon #PeakPerformance #AthleteLife #BehindTheScenes #70Point3 #Ironman703 #TriathlonGermany **ALOHA KALLE Website Coaching** https://aloha-kalle.de **Steady:** http://steadyhq.com/aloha-kalle **ALOHA KALLE Strava-Club:** https://www.strava.com/clubs/aloha-kalle **ALOHA KALLE Instagram:** https://www.instagram.com/aloha_kalle/ **Marcus Herbst Instagram** https://www.instagram.com/marcus.herbst/
We open with an update on Jelle Geens, who has been diagnosed with a stress reaction in his femur that has put his season on hold, including his pursuit of an Ironman World Championship qualification slot. Then we get into Lionel Sanders, who has confirmed he is working again with Mikal Iden after a difficult stretch dealing with RED-S and injury. Sanders is leaning into the Norwegian method as he targets Kona 2026. The big story of the week is Ironman Hamburg, where metal shards were deliberately spread across the bike course in the Kirchwerder area, causing an estimated 400 punctures and forcing more than 100 age groupers to DNF. Police have launched a formal investigation. Despite all of that, the pro race went ahead and Solveig Løvseth took her fourth consecutive full-distance Ironman win, holding off Laura Philipp by just over a minute to claim the European Championship title. We then recap T100 San Francisco, where Rico Bogen backed up his 2025 win with another dominant performance, going early on the bike and never looking back. Hayden Wilde, dealing with illness, had no answer for him. We close out looking ahead to Ironman Frankfurt on June 28, where Gustav Iden and Casper Stornes lead the field, and Magnus Ditlev finally makes his long-awaited 2026 season debut, plus a look at other upcoming start lists. If you're putting in 12, 14, sometimes 20 hours a week and your times are going backwards, this episode is for you. This is a solo episode, and I want to talk about something I see constantly with athletes over 50, and it frustrates me because it's so avoidable. High volume training feels like commitment. It feels like the right thing to do. But for athletes in their late 40s, 50s and 60s, it's often the thing that's quietly breaking them down. In this episode I explain what's actually happening physiologically when you stack training stress on top of work stress, poor sleep and a less forgiving hormonal environment. I talk about what smart training looks like for this stage of life, and why the athletes I've coached who go sub 10 or earn Kona slots are almost never the ones doing the most hours. This isn't about doing less. It's about doing better. 5 KEY POINTS The body doesn't distinguish between types of stress - training load, work pressure and poor sleep all land in the same bucket, and chronic overload triggers sustained cortisol elevation that works directly against recovery and adaptation. The hormonal environment after 50 is fundamentally different - lower testosterone and growth hormone mean the margin for error is much smaller than it was in your 30s. You can no longer outwork a poor recovery strategy. Sleep is where adaptation happens - around 95% of daily growth hormone is released during deep sleep. Cut sleep to squeeze in an extra session and you're adding fatigue, not fitness. Consistency beats volume every time - 10 hours a week for 52 weeks is 520 hours. Sporadic 20-hour weeks followed by burnout or injury will never outperform steady, sustainable training across a full year. Recovery weeks are not a weakness - planned recovery weeks are a strategic tool, not an optional extra. Without them, training stress accumulates without the adaptation following. 3 TAKEAWAYS Make easy sessions genuinely easy and hard sessions genuinely hard - most athletes do everything at medium intensity, which delivers neither recovery nor adaptation. Strength and mobility are non-negotiable - schedule them first and never cancel them for an extra swim or run session. If your times are going backwards, it's not a motivation problem or a commitment problem. It's a strategy problem and strategy can be fixed. KILLER QUOTE "These athletes aren't lazy and they're definitely not lacking commitment. If anything, commitment is the problem, because they're committed to an approach that is quietly breaking them down." LINKS & RESOURCES Want help building durable training? You can trace a skate scene through its spots, but you understand it through the people who built it. We sit down at Kona Skate Park in Jacksonville, Florida with Rick Andrade, a longtime skater born and raised in Austin, Texas, who started skating in the summer of 1986 and carried that energy everywhere his Navy career took him. From backyard mini ramps and ditch sessions to the influence of Bones Brigade and classic skate videos like The End, Rick explains why he always leaned toward going fast, going big, and making it look right. Then we get into the real Jacksonville skateboarding history: Skate Asylum days, Kona memories, road trips, and the DIY grind that turns a tight crew into something bigger. Rick breaks down how Legacy Skateboards comes together, from blank decks and hand-cut stickers to contests, demos, and the “Legacy crew” reputation that followed them across Florida. Along the way, we swap stories about growing up, getting hurt, finding balance, and what it feels like to return to skating after life shifts into marriage, kids, and a career that demands you move. We also nerd out on skateboard setups for anyone who cares about what actually works under your feet: board sizes, wheel sizes, OJ vs Spitfire vs Bones, Independent trucks, risers, and bushing combos that help you stay stable at speed. Finally, we tackle the big question about modern skateboarding media: did Instagram and instant clips “break” skateboarding around 2013, or did it open the door for more skaters and smaller brands to get seen worldwide? If you're into skateboarding culture, skate history, Kona Skate Park stories, or the intersection of a military life and a lifelong skate habit, this one hits home. Community new for June 2026! After headlines, we share exciting updates from two HPF partners working to restore loko iʻa (fishponds) and addressing multiple crucial issues in the process: rebuilding regenerative food systems, protecting water, facilitating community healing, restoring cultural practice, and more. First, we have Loke Aloua, one of the poʻo of Hui Kaloko-Honokōhau, sharing updates from the hui's work at Kaloko Fishpond in Kona, Hawaiʻi. Listen to our first episode with Loke back in 2022 to hear more about the hui's origin story and vision: 30. Hui Kaloko-Honokōhau: Stewards to the Realm of Kanaloa. Second, Hanohano and Maile Naehu, the head kiaʻi loko and the program director of Hui o Kuapā, talk about the evolution of their work at ʻŌhalahala Fishpond in Manaʻe, Molokai. In particular, they share about a recent highly impact kiaʻi loko gathering and workday they hosted, where 90% of the kuapā (fishpond wall) was rebuilt. A touring stand-up comedian pulls up to Jacksonville, skates all day, then hits the stage that night and somehow it all makes perfect sense. We're posted up at legendary Kona Skatepark with Taylor Clark (stand-up comedian and skateboarder) and St. Augustine's Nick Day, and the background sound of skating sets the tone for a conversation that's equal parts funny and real.Taylor breaks down how he started doing comedy, why skateboarding keeps showing up in his writing, and the hard problem every niche storyteller faces: making “skate language” land with people who've never stepped on a board. We also get into Florida skate stops like DIY parks, the vibe at Neon Moon, and the history that hangs over Kona, including the kind of spots that instantly humble you.Nick shares what it's like being 20 and living out of a backpack for skate trips, chasing sessions from San Francisco to Philly, and learning how connected the skateboarding world really is once you start moving. From there we go deeper on expectations, gratitude, and a line that sticks: skateboarding doesn't owe you anything. We talk sobriety and focus, how getting healthy can bring skating back, and why the best skate community is the one that lets people skate their own way.If you're into skateboarding, stand-up comedy, Kona Skatepark, Tampa Pro energy, or just love stories about finding your people, hit play. Mike had to make a trip back to Mexico to help his 97-year-old Mom move, and amidst spider bites, broken windows, explosive dog diarrhea, and the usual technical issues (he needs his own full-time tech support department), he miraculously joined Simon to go over a very busy month — from racing to the courtroom, they have a lot to get through. Paragon Machine Works' reopening is the best news, and looks poised to keep frame builders stocked with crucial parts. Niner Bikes has been “paused”, whatever that means. Kona has a new boss (Mike is skeptical). The Loudenvielle DH World Cup was a crash-fest, but Luca Shaw emerged from the carnage on the top step, and Vali Holl continued her dominance on the notoriously tricky track. We called them cheats. The reality is far more complicated. There have been plenty of books written about drugs in sport. Confessions, memoirs, exposés. But this one is different. James Witts is a sports journalist and former editor of 220 Triathlon Magazine — someone I've known for well over a decade. His new book, Dope, isn't a first-person account of falling from grace. It's a proper state-of-play analysis of where the battle between dopers and anti-dopers actually stands in 2025 and 2026. Who's winning? How are athletes sidestepping detection? And what's driving people to dope in the first place — because it's rarely as simple as wanting to win. We talk about Colin Chartier, David Millar, Team Sky, TUEs, blood bags, the Enhanced Games, AI, and why this issue reaches much further than elite sport. Including age-group athletes who will go to extraordinary lengths just to qualify for Kona. This is a nuanced conversation that will change how you see this subject. 5 KEY POINTS Doping is rarely just about winning — identity, imposter syndrome, financial pressure and team dynamics all play a significant role. TUEs are widely exploited — therapeutic use exemptions are legitimate in principle but have become a well-documented route to legal performance enhancement. The Enhanced Games raises an uncomfortable question — if records aren't broken when athletes can openly dope, what does that say about clean sport? Social media is a direct pipeline for dangerous substances — young athletes are being targeted by adverts for drugs like DNP, linked to over 30 deaths in the UK alone. AI cuts both ways — it could help create novel undetectable drugs, but also help anti-doping agencies crunch data faster than ever before. 3 TAKEAWAYS Look beyond the headlines — calling athletes cheats and moving on ignores the complex web of pressure and identity that leads many there. The line is rarely clear — from TUEs to grey-area supplements, the boundary between legal and illegal is often deliberately blurred. This isn't just an elite problem — age-group athletes and recreational competitors operate in the same ecosystem, with more similar pressures than we'd like to think. KILLER QUOTE "It's so damning if someone is found to have taken a prohibited substance — it almost feels worse than murder. At least with murder there's a sense of rehabilitation." Výtah Respektu: Sněmovna by chtěla ve středu dokončit druhé kolo schvalování rozsáhlé novely stavebního zákona, kterou dolní komora minulý týden opakovaně přerušila. Proč tedy koaliční poslanci a poslankyně změny prosazují? Kdo z nich bude těžit? A co je novele stavebního zákona nejvíc vytýkáno? Ve středeční epizodě vysvětluje Jan H. Vitvar.

What happens when a fine artist's eyes begin to change — and how does it show up on the canvas? In this episode, Dr. April Jasper travels to the stunning Big Island of Kona, Hawaii, to sit down with fine artist, illustrator, and writer Mark Martel. Known for his breathtaking Hawaiian landscapes, wildlife paintings, and the beloved series “If the Masters Painted Hawai'i,” Mark brings a unique perspective to the intersection of vision and creative expression.Together, Dr. Jasper and Mark explore a commissioned painting, unpack the visual shifts that emerge in an artist's work as ocular health changes over time, and reflect on what it truly means to see — and to create — when vision is no longer taken for granted. From the science of how the eye processes color, contrast, and detail, to the deeply human experience of an artist adapting to change, this conversation is a beautiful reminder of why vision matters in ways that go far beyond the exam room.Whether you're a clinician, a patient, an art lover, or simply someone who has ever paused to appreciate the world around you, this episode will leave you looking at both art and eyecare through a whole new lens.

In this episode of the IRONMAN Insider Podcast, host Matt Lieto sits down with pro triathlete Fenella Langridge for an open and honest conversation about resilience, setbacks, and rediscovering her love for the sport. Fenella shares the challenges of the past couple of seasons, including a long period of unexplained fatigue that ultimately led to a diagnosis and major surgery, and how that experience affected both her performance and mindset. Now one year removed from surgery, she reflects on the process of rebuilding consistency and confidence. Training in Mallorca, Fenella discusses how returning to a focused environment has helped her regain form, hit some of her best sessions, and start feeling like herself again—especially after overcoming lingering doubts following a bike crash. The conversation also explores the realities of professional triathlon beyond the highlights, including the mental and emotional demands of the sport, the importance of adapting to setbacks, and why enjoying the process is key to long-term success. Known for her expressive and instinctive racing style, Fenella emphasizes the role of energy, emotion, and authenticity in how she competes. Looking ahead, she shares her goals for the season, including upcoming races like IRONMAN Hamburg and her ambition to return to Kona at her best. This episode offers a candid look at the highs and lows of elite sport, and what it takes to keep pushing forward. The IRONMAN Insider is presented by Maurten. In Part 2, Kyle and Brent Pease go beyond the race course and into the harder terrain — the screaming match in a New York City taxi after a broken wheelchair nearly ended their marathon, the board member who called every morning during school drop-off, and what it actually takes to build an organization that can run without you. This is where the mission meets the mechanics, and where two brothers figure out how to grow up together in public. In this episode: How Kyle and Brent built the Kyle Pease Foundation from scratch — including the nine months it took to help their very first family, the decision to race at least once a month to create visibility, and how they've grown from six events in 2013 to 64 events across 14 states last year The New York City Marathon story: the wheelchair broke mid-race, Brent spent an hour trying to fix it with help from the NYPD, and eventually told Kyle he was done — and what Kyle said back that got them across the finish line Brent's framework for hiring in a nonprofit: passion for the mission matters more than fit for the role, and for every non-disabled hire, he wants to add another employee with a disability doing real work — not stuffing envelopes The Dick Hoyt lesson — the father behind the famous push-assist duo called Brent before the 2018 IRONMAN World Championship and gave him these words of advice: "just keep pushing the pedals" How Kyle became the athlete-coach he is today: years of sitting on the sidelines, listening to adults talk, and watching his brother compete gave him an observer's precision that most coaches never develop Support the Kyle Pease Foundation Dwayne is matching donations — up to $5,000 total. Kyle and Brent Pease have completed more than 100 races together — including two IRONMAN World Championships in Kona, Hawaii — and in 2024 they broke the push-assist course record with a finish time of 14 hours, 8 minutes, and 3 seconds. Kyle, born with cerebral palsy, is the coach, the motivator, and the athlete who has to be the most positive force in the world for 15 hours straight while his brother, Brent, pushes him across 140.6 miles. What looks like a sports story from the outside is something much harder to categorize: a 15-year study in resilience, gratitude, and what it actually means to show up when both of you want to quit. In Part 1 of their conversation: How Brent and Kyle broke the push-assist course record at the 2024 IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, Hawaii — and what 15 years of racing together has taught themWhy Brent says true balance is an illusion — and how he and Kyle define "all in" as the real unit of energy management, shifting fully between Ironman training, family, and the foundation depending on the season Kyle's framework for getting out of dark moments: prayer, music, visualization, and the discipline of reducing the time between a hard moment and a shift in perspective What the foundation's inclusive employment program looks like on the ground How racing together has taught both brothers to say "I'm not okay" — and why that vulnerability has become one of their greatest competitive and leadership advantages Support the Kyle Pease Foundation Dwayne is matching donations — up to $5,000 total. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by LMNT, we are joined by Katie "Sunrise" Lance, a civil engineer turned professional triathlete turned thru-hiker who completed the AT last year before quitting her job to pursue triathlon coaching full-time. In this one, Katie walks us through what it's like to qualify for Kona on your very first Ironman, how she was training 20 hours a week on top of 12-hour night shifts at the Tennessee Valley Authority, and what finally pushed her to leave it all behind and hike from Georgia to Maine. She also shares the full arc of a pink-blazing situation that somehow ends with a guy hiking 74 miles in 24 hours to process his feelings, how she nearly got bit by a rattlesnake while finally rinsing out her pee rag for the first time, and why she thinks anyone can finish an Ironman if they actually train for it. We wrap the show with a piece on why week one of a thru-hike is the hardest, a profile on a 70-year-old who set out to hike all three Triple Crown trails in a single calendar year, debating whether pizza loses its luster as you get older, the triple crown of Star Wars characters, and the weird places toddlers pee.
