Troy of The Secret Commonwealth emailed a sad follow up back in March to the news about his friend who was illegally held in ICE custody: "Marc, thank you so much for sharing the fundraiser for my friend on your new episode. It is with profoundly heavy heart that I have to tell you that my friend died last Sunday of a heart attack. He had been moved to a hospital in Mississippi and apparently suffered two successive attacks. His body is being returned now. To say we are devastated and infuriated would be inadequate to describe our state of being. We had just been sending his lawyers important records and documents that we felt, along with his obvious serious health conditions, had a very good chance of securing his release. We'll never know now if that would have proven to be true, but we just needed him to endure a little while longer, which he ultimately could not. He died one month short of a year since being detained by ICE. I have not yet publicly announced this in an update to our fundraiser because, frankly, it's still too fresh and painful to address. But any proceeds we've made will obviously now be put toward the cost of his funeral service. Sorry to impart this bad news, but I mostly wanted to express my gratitude to you for your kind support on behalf of Pejman's family, my girlfriend (who was his dearest friend in the world and who spearheaded this fight for his freedom) and for me. A successful period focuses on mental and physiological restoration while building a platform for future training. Avoid the "No-Break" Athlete: Continuous high-intensity training leads to mental exhaustion and physiological plateaus. Avoid the "Winter Warrior": Constant high-effort training causes burnout and prevents true recovery. Avoid the "Rogue/Random" Athlete: Complete cessation of training leads to detraining, injury, and difficulty ramping back up. The Goal: Achieve consistency over months and seasons rather than daily perfection, creating "compound interest" on fitness. Training Principles The off-season shifts focus from boosting functional thresholds or speed to preparatory work that builds a robust chassis for the next season. Reduced Volume: Athletes are encouraged to train fewer hours (e.g., dropping from 20 hours to 12–14) to reduce cognitive load and life competition. Strength Focus: This is the primary window to "double down" on strength training to increase durability and power. Technical Development: Without the pressure of race deadlines, athletes should focus on craft, such as swim hand entry, running posture, and cycling traction. Variety and Additive Activities: Incorporating activities like skiing, yoga, or mountain biking helps maintain vibrancy and prevents boredom. Physiological Ceiling: Utilizing short, high-intensity bouts to build the heart rate ceiling without the volume of a full race prep block. Program Details Purple Patch will officially launch its off-season program on September 28th, though onboarding can begin around September 14th or 21st. Structure: The program emphasizes building an athletic base (multi-directional stability and power) rather than just a traditional Zone 2 base. In 1990, Savatage stood at a turning point. Following the release of "Gutter Ballet", the band embarked on a tour that would become one of the most explosive and defining runs of their career. Night after night, audiences were drawn into a powerful blend of crushing riffs, theatrical ambition and emotional intensity. It was a band in transformation: heavier, broader, and more dramatic than ever before. Now, more than three decades later, "Madness Reigns From The Gutter (1990)" documents that pivotal era in full force. Carefully restored from the original master tapes and newly mixed and mastered, the 19-track album presents Savatage at peak voltage: ferocious yet refined, balancing power metal muscle with the sweeping grandeur that would soon shape their next chapter. Many fans consider the 1990 lineup to be “peak Savatage”, and listening to this performance, it's hard to disagree. On stage, five distinct personalities ignited the night: the youthful and electrifying Chris Caffery; bassist Johnny Lee Middleton, matching Caffery's fire note for note; the hard-hitting and wildly animated Steve “Doc” Wacholz behind his gargantuan triple-bass kit; the virtuosic Criss Oliva, channelling precision and passion in equal measure; and at the center of it all, the charismatic ringmaster Jon Oliva in absolute prime form.
