In this episode I had the pleasure of speaking with remarkable a woman called Maggie Jones. She was given a terminal cancer diagnosis after doctors found tumors throughout her body, and a survival prognosis of 6 to 8 months, that was 6 years ago, incredibly not only is she still alive but she is thriving. We find out about the stress and initial emotional impact of her diagnosis. We hear about her decision to take action as far as her health was concerned only a few days after her diagnosis, and the steps she took mentally and phsyically in the months following. Expect to learn about sugars relationship with cancer cells in the body. We talk about Maggie's experience with the ketogenic diet and why no one diet will cure cancer per se. Maggie tells us about the unexpected longterm side effects of her treatment which her doctors never considered would be a factor given they never expected her to live beyond 8 months. Discover how attitude and self perception plays a role in one's healing. Plus we hear about Maggie's docuseries, which she hopes will provide guidance and inspiration to others diagnosed with cancer . You will be blown away by Maggie Jone's story, but also buy her amazing attitude, she is a force of nature. Dogs Are Smarter Than People: Writing Life, Marriage and Motivation
Sometimes I think one of the toughest choices you can make publicly is to call out false binaries. That's what comedian Trevor Noah recently did on his show where he was specifically talking about abortion saying that just going down to catchphrases like pro choice or pro life was reductive and took away conversation and nuance to views. And people got enraged on Twitter (both Republicans and Democrats). To be fair, people get enraged about a lot on Twitter and off Twitter now. But rage by itself? It's just rage. If you want change, you have to go after action. Carrie had a post about this on her own Facebook where apparently her call to action over a political issue wasn't what one of her local acquaintances wanted from me. So he turned his rage about politics into rage at me for not being rage-y enough. Yes, Carrie is still processing this, while Shaun just called him a f-stick and got over with it. This weekend, one of the many things that were trending in the world of Twitter conversation was the new book of an American family therapist, Terry Real, entitled, “Us: Getting Past You and Me to Build a More Loving Relationship,” where he argues it is because we've created “a toxic culture of individualism.” We have not read the book and honestly, the fact that he's a celebrity therapist who counsels people like Bruce Springsteen, makes me want to not want to read it. Springsteen wrote the introduction. But all the book reviewers at all the big papers are. He has two big terms in the book THAT WE WANTED TO MENTION: Adaptive childWise adult He defines them both in an interview with the New York Times's Maggie Jones (no relation) as: “Wise adults are present-based. They're not flooded with the past and can see things clearly. They have the capacity to see the whole of the relationship. They have the capacity to stop and reflect and choose. “When we move out of our prefrontal cortex, out of our wise adult self, we are in our adaptive child self. We get trauma-triggered, and the adaptive child — the things you learned to do as a kid because of emotional neglect or violence — part of us comes in and takes over. One of the bitter pills here is that the adaptive child part of us doesn't want to be intimate. It wants to preserve itself. It's about me, me, me. You-and-me consciousness is an adversarial world in which one loses and the other wins. It's a big power struggle. “By repeating the same adaptive child move over and over again, you get in a dysfunctional relational stance. I'll give you an example. Angry pursuit is a dysfunctional stance. Angry pursuit is an oxymoron. You will never get someone closer to you by complaining about how distant they are. Controlling your partner, retaliating or withdrawing will never solve your problem. These are the hallmarks of the adaptive child part of you. And the first skill is shifting out of that part of you into the wise adult.” Whew. That's a lot of quote right? But to me what he's saying is that if we want to be good, wise adults with happy freaking healthy marraiges we have to let go of the adaptive child. We need to think with nuance and empathy, which brings me back to Trevor Noah, right? Because Trevor is also talking about this. What our culture in the U.S. (at least) needs more of is that movement toward the wise adult, the ability to converse, to think with nuance, to go beyond false binaries, catch phrases and performative social media posts and work towards changing ourselves and our relationships and our country. Real talks about the mysticism of marriage in that interview and says, “There may be super placid couples who aren't terribly intimate, and they don't bug each other. But usually there are three phases of love: harmony, disharmony and repair. Those phases can occur 20 times during one dinner conversation or span over decades of your marriage or long-term relationship. The harmony phase is love without knowledge. You may have a soul recognition that this is your guy. But you don't know what he does with his socks in the morning. “The disillusionment phase is critical. It's the stuff of intimacy. It's the collision of your imperfections and how we handle it. Our culture doesn't equip people to deal with that disillusionment. It's rough. It's dark. I've run around the country for 20 years, talking about what I call “normal marital hatred” and not one person has ever come backstage to ask what I meant by that.” And it's a bit like we aren't just doing that to ours spouses, we're doing that to everyone. When we repair our country, we want to look to that repair the way Real advocates repairing marraiges—as a relationship, a group effort, a look to the higher good. Real thinks a lot of this also stems from patriarchy and our separation from nature and desire to dominate it. He says we have to move away from trying to control everything, but collaborate and to do it humbly, saying in that same interview how all of the world is interconnected. “You're not above the system, you're in it. You breath it.” DOG TIP FOR LIFE Don't let other people bite your jowls. Episode Highlights [04:00] Maggie's Journey with Cancer In 2018, Maggie was diagnosed with lung cancer and was told that she had less than a year to live. At first, Maggie accepted her fate, but she started to learn more about how she can help her body heal. She took up fasting, a ketogenic diet, organic foods, and metabolic treatments. A year after her diagnosis, she was cancer-free. While Maggie is not dealing with cancer anymore, she has been dealing with the effects of cancer medicine that was used on her. Cancer treatment often feels too rushed. It would be better to spread out treatments and lower their dosage. [08:27] How Maggie's Cancer Affected Brad Brad tried to hide how much Maggie's cancer impacted him emotionally. At the same time, he felt that Maggie was strong enough to face and survive cancer. He learned all about metabolic treatments through Maggie and served as her reminder. Brad even started eating Maggie's diet and fasted with her. [12:13] How Fasting Can Help Before Treatments Maggie used to think eating healthy was good. After a tumour surgery, she was vomiting and sweating. However, she tried fasting before the surgery and found that she felt great after the procedure. Fasting is known to be able to “close” normal cells while the cancer cells are still active and looking for energy. When exposed to radiation, the cancer cells get more affected. Clinical research takes around 17 years before becoming part of clinical practice. [15:39] Genetics and Epigenetics Combining hyperbaric therapy, a strict diet, and exogenous ketones can make a big difference. Yet, this practice is not common in cancer treatment. The industry focuses more on DNA, even though there have been more discoveries about biochemistry since then. Genetics and epigenetics are different. The former is about the genes themselves, while the latter looks at what turns the genes on and off. Our environment and behaviour affect the way our genes work. Differentiation of cells is the true cause of aging. [18:49] The Warburg Effect Cancers can and will change their way of using energy. Even when oxygen is available, cancer cells use fermentation, which is not as efficient. The Warburg effect is already a fact. What's not being studied is why this is happening. There is the genetic theory where genes mutate and cause cell changes, while the other theory is the other way around. Cutting off the cancer cells' food source is the start. This includes glucose, glutamine, and so much more. You can block cancer cell growth with diet, off label drugs, and specific protocols for specific cancers. Learn more about these in the full episode! [24:48] Why Starving Cancer Can Help The biggest criticism of starving cancer is that cancer cells can adapt to different metabolic pathways. While starving cancer may not lead to curing it, it can help you buy time. The drug protocols have lower side effects than traditional therapy and radiation surgery. [25:48] How to Use Press Pulse Due to cancer's adaptability, you can expect to change protocols every so often. Maggie shares that press pulse can be helpful. This is using a certain protocol first, then switching to something else once cancer adapts and eventually reintroducing the first protocol. [27:57] Always Be Vigilant Brad cautions people not to think they're cured of cancer and go back to unhealthy foods and habits. We all have some cancer cells. Your immune system needs to be strong enough to fight against it. Even if your cancer markers are gone, retaining a ketogenic diet can still be helpful. Exogenous ketones are not fermentable as a food source for cancer. [33:05] Maggie and Brad's Documentary, CanceRevolution Maggie and Brad's documentary about cancer includes guests who are at the forefront of cancer research and people who have experienced cancer. The documentary is still a work in progress. Donations are highly appreciated. This is all about sharing the metabolic approach to cancer and understanding how cancer works. In the medical profession, doctors can lose their license if they go all-in on the metabolic approach, even if it has been proven effective. The profession has shown that money drives what is promoted or not. Thus, we need to be proactive and take ownership of our health. [42:36] Take Ownership of Your Health While somatic mutation, genetic theory, and metabolic theory are not yet proven, technologies can be built around it to prove it. For example, the PET scan is a cancer diagnostics tool based on the Warburg Effect. As a patient, you have to be your own advocate and not just blindly listen to doctors. Read books and clinical research. Remember that you're in control of your body. 7 Powerful Quotes [9:18] “When, we were together, I just always had this feeling that she was going to make it through. I don't know why, but I was just like — I knew my wife. I knew how strong she was. And if anyone is going to fight this disease, it's her.” — Bradley [25:05] “I was given the six to eight months to live. My starving cancer bought me another three years of life. This is time to address the next pathway when it comes up and to wait for the next conventional therapy that might help me and all the new research that's coming out. Though it's not going to cure your cancer, it's going to buy you time and buy you incredible quality of life.” — Maggie [28:30] “It's really hard to be completely cured. Your cancer is always somewhere. We all have some. My immune system is holding its own, whilst Maggie's wasn't. That's basically what happened is her immune system couldn't fight it off anymore.” — Bradley [32:21] “So having these exogenous ketones can really help just for athletes, as well as cancer patients, but it's really — it's teaching your body to be metabolically flexible.” — Lisa [34:12] “...she's [Dr Nasha Winters] lived such a powerful life helping others. She was diagnosed too late in her progression to ever receive chemotherapy. And I think that's really what we can all strive for is even if scans aren't perfect, you can still live such a long, full life and don't give up hope.” — Maggie [49:32] “One of the things that Maggie and I tell try and tell everyone is you have to be — as a patient, you have to be your own advocate. Do not just listen to what your doctor is saying — your oncologist or any doctor. They only meet with you for a half hour, right? Like Maggie sees her oncologist for like about a half hour once every three months.” — Bradley [55:11] “I'm not unlucky. There are very clear therapeutic things that I can do, that I did to get cancer, that I can do to get out of it. And we need to promote this message of you're in control of your medical destiny. Don't just listen to somebody else who tells you it's a lost cause.” — Maggie Resources Gain exclusive access and bonuses to Pushing the Limits Podcast by becoming a patron! Today, Maggie Jones explores the overlooked topic of geriatric sex. Profiling older couples for whom it is still important, she considers the obstacles and joys of having sex over the age of 70, and the way society has begun to talk more openly about it in recent years. As bodies change, Jones writes, good sex in old age often requires reimagining and expanding: a conscious inclusion of more touching, kissing, erotic massage, oral sex and sex toys. Along with pleasure, other benefits are linked to sex: a stronger immune system, improved cognitive function, cardiovascular health in women and lower odds of prostate cancer, along with improved sleep, stress reduction and a cultivation of emotional intimacy. The subset of older people who are having lots of sex well into their 80s could help shape those conversations and policies, while doctors can also do their part by attending to individuals' physiological impediments to sex. Many sex experts expect more open conversations and policies related to their senior sex lives in the years to come. This story was written by Maggie Jones and recorded by Audm. One month after Maggie Jones' 40th birthday, she was diagnosed with terminal, stage 4 lung cancer that had spread to her eye, liver, four tumors in her brain, and more than a dozen lymph nodes throughout her chest, neck and abdomen. Her prognosis of six to eight months with conventional treatment seemed optimistic. Her doctors were focused on making her comfortable. She was dying. After doing a bunch of research and adopting a whole new lifestyle and a ketogenic diet she found herself cancer free in just one year. We talked with her and husband, Brad Jones, about their incredible journey and how that has led to them taking on a project to make a documentary called 'Cancerevolution' in an attempt to reach as many people as possible that there is hope for people out there who are diagnosed with cancer. Their driving goal is to raise awareness of marginalized but evidence-based metabolic cancer therapies that can be used in conjunction with conventional treatment and can help save lives. After introducing their more PG-13 subject of pornography, Greg explains some history behind how we got to where we are. RD is quick to point out that this issue affects both men and women. The two discuss how there are often only two schools of thought about pornography: It is the unforgivable sin (which leads to shame and not real conversation), or it's celebrated as providing sexual freedom. Greg is emphatic that it is not a sin to look at someone and be attracted sexually to them because God created us to be attracted to them. It becomes a sin when the thought turns to lust. RD adds that pornography is bad because it makes sex transactional and takes away the covenant partnership tied to sex. Greg brings up society's attachment to technology; he references the hikikomori in Japan and an article by Maggie Jones. RD implores listeners to have real conversations about pornography so as to bring freedom to those in its bondage. He mentions how Jesus was friends with and forgave prostitutes and those living in sin as a way to show that Jesus pursues all of us no matter what we've done.As an additional resource for kids, Greg references a book called Good Pictures Bad Pictures. RD and Greg transition into helping listeners know how to react and what to say when someone in their life confesses to them that they watch porn. Greg specifically speaks to people getting into new relationships, and how to handle when the other person says they watch porn. As they wrap up, the two reference resources available at Fellowship Church, like the counseling department. This is Albert Mohler for Townhall.com. On the issue of pornography, the New York Times has just given us an example of what moral surrender looks like. The cover story of the magazine is titled, “What Teenagers Are Learning From Online Porn.” The main argument is that pornography has become the main vehicle for sex education amongst American teenagers. Access appears to be such a given in terms of the adolescent experience in our nation today that the New York Times Magazine article is mostly important because of its central message: This is simply a reality you're going to have to find a way to deal with it. In one amazing paragraph, the author—Maggie Jones—actually suggests that the moral issue is not whether or not teenagers are looking at pornography, but what kind of pornography they are viewing and whether or not it brings out a certain form of sexism in them. It’s as if—as a society—we’re really past the ability to render moral judgment. It’s another dark milestone in the moral context of our culture.
