Der Appenzeller Musiker erzählt, warum das Brauchtum aus seiner Sicht nur überleben kann, wenn es mit dem Heute verbunden wird. Dass dies nicht allen gefällt und auf Kritik stösst, bestärkt ihn in seiner Haltung. Im Gespräch mit Nino Gadient sagt Meinrad Koch, dass der Jodel die Veränderung seit jeher in seiner DNA trägt. Für den Appenzeller Musiker bedeutet erneuern auch bewahren. Das tut er heute zusammen mit seiner Bühnenpartnerin Melanie Dörig. Eben erst haben die beiden den Förderpreis für Kulturschaffende der Internationalen Bodensee-Konferenz für ihre Performance «Wiibli ond Mandli» erhalten. Wie herausfordernd dieser Spagat zwischen Tradition und Modern sein kann, zeigt sich aktuell auch im Klanghaus Toggenburg. Im Frühling 2025 soll es eröffnet werden. Der künstlerische Leiter will das Haus international ausrichten. Traditionelle Jodlerinnen und Jodler wollen, dass die hiesige Musik genügend Raum bekommt, eine Gratwanderung zwischen zeitgenössischer Worldmusic und Naturjodel.

Using Matthew 18 as a touch point for discussion of the inner child is what we call using a "spiritual sense" of Scripture. It's fascinating to me that Jesus emphasized His teaching in 18 and part of 19 by placing children before Him (remember that chapter and verse numbers were not in the original writings, but added for our convenience). In this episode, Hettie V. Williams discusses jailing and mass incarceration with Dr. Melanie D. Newport. Williams is Associate Professor of African American History at Monmouth University and Newport is an Assistant Professor of history at the University of Connecticut and the author of This is My Jail: Local Politics and the Rise of Mass Incarceration (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2022). This conversation is structured mainly around Newport's recently published book on jailing with a focus on the Cook County Jail in Chicago. In this text, Newport argues that jailing has been central to the mass incarceration project in the modern history of the United States. She links jailing to local politics and, also, community activism. Newport contends that there is a longer history of mass incarceration connected to racialized “politically repressive” jailing. She includes in this history a discussion of a host of historical actors key to this history such as wardens, correction officers, sheriffs, jailed people themselves and the network of community activists who sought to reform and imagine “their jail.” This is a groundbreaking work in the ever-expanding history of the carceral state.

There are many firsts in Betty King’s life. First female prosecutor for the state of Victoria. First female prosecutor for the Commonwealth of Australia. First female silk in Victoria. Now another – first Chair of Victoria’s Voluntary Assisted Dying Review Board. Reporting to parliament, the Board oversees the processes of the law with its 68 safeguards, ensuring that doctors adhere to the rules, and that the people seeking assistance to die are competent and not being coerced. Of all the doubts raised by MPs in the parliamentary debate about assisted dying, none was more frequent than the fear that a vulnerable person may be coerced to their death by heartless relatives through the VAD law.  In this episode, we meet Betty – the “Guardian of the Safeguards’ – as well as doctors, palliative care physicians, pharmacists, VAD Care Navigators, and families of those who have been through the process to find out whether any of those fears have turned out to be true. And we discover there is another, unwritten safeguard:  To take this path, you have to have enormous courage. The Hon. At age twelve she stopped taekwondo to pursue other interests, and resumed training in her early thirties. Although Melanie had academic and career achievements throughout her life, she struggled with mental illness and low self-esteem. After making some progress through psychiatric treatment and counseling, she knew she needed to do something more substantial to make lasting changes. Returning to taekwondo had always been in the back of her mind, and the timing was right. Taekwondo proved to be not only an opportunity to re-learn a beloved skill from her childhood, but also a means to build her self-esteem and confidence, and heal from old wounds. It brought a needed excitement and purpose to her life, which she shares in her blog Little Black Belt (http://littleblackbelt.com). While continuing to work at her full-time job, Melanie dedicated herself to taekwondo training and earned her first degree black belt in 2015. In 2017, she earned her second degree black belt. Although a pandemic and knee injury sidelined her training in 2020, Melanie plans to return to taekwondo and test for her third degree black belt.
