Larry Ellison and his son David Ellison have won the bid to acquire Warner Brothers Discovery in a $110 billion deal, edging out Netflix. The Ellisons, close allies of Donald Trump, are financing the purchase with $70 billion in debt, including roughly $25 billion from Middle Eastern sovereign wealth funds. The final price of $31 per share was more than four times the recent low of Warner Brothers Discovery stock. What this means for American media is staggering. The Ellisons already control CBS and CBS News through their earlier $8 billion Paramount merger. This new deal adds CNN, HBO, HBO Max, DC Comics, Harry Potter, Star Trek, Comedy Central, Showtime, TNT, TBS, the Food Network, HGTV, Discovery, Adult Swim, OWN, The Learning Channel, Avatar Studios, and the Lord of the Rings and Mission Impossible franchises. Larry Ellison also holds a significant stake in TikTok through Oracle. Hawk outlines how Bari Weiss, placed in charge of CBS News and 60 Minutes, has already driven away viewers and credibility, including Anderson Cooper, who walked away from 60 Minutes after 19 years. The same playbook is expected to be applied to CNN. The deeper concern is the Ellisons' intent to gut creative talent and replace programming with AI-generated content to service the enormous debt load this deal carries. With Trump signaling regulatory approval, antitrust challenges are effectively neutralized. Scott Jennings and CNN's panel-yelling format come up as symbols of a media landscape already in decline. The consolidation of this much media power in the hands of Trump-aligned billionaires represents a fundamental threat to independent journalism and creative expression in America. The final film in director Roger Corman's Edgar Allan Poe cycle, The Tomb of Ligeia marked the second collaboration for Corman and screenwriter Robert Towne.  Towne would go on to be one of the hardest working and respected writers and script doctors in Hollywood (The Last Detail, Shampoo, Mission: Impossible, The Firm, Personal Best and Tequila Sunrise) and collect an Academy Award for writing Chinatown.  Towne is quoted, however, as saying that his adaptation for The Tomb of Ligeia was the hardest he'd ever worked on.   Dan and Vicky discuss the horror film along with plenty of recently seen like films Marty Supreme, Rosemead, Dead Man's Wife, The Lost Bus, Griffin in Summer, Twinless, Is This Thing On?, and TV series Heated Rivalry and Kaos. I start the episode riding high off a homemade sandwich and the confidence only Martin's BBQ chips can give a man. From there, I immediately make a series of adult financial decisions I should not be allowed to make. I lock down a signed Jake Paul Pop Century card, talk myself into wearing it as a necklace, and openly admit I need my phone taken away before Facebook Marketplace and TikTok live sales ruin my life. This is what happens when you give someone adult money and internet access.Then we get into the storm. The storm of the century. The storm with a PR team. Winter Storm Fern. According to the internet, Pennsylvania is getting anywhere from one inch to ninety eight inches of snow, trees are exploding in Canada, and grocery stores are out of everything except Dasani. I break down the panic, the fake urgency, and the group hysteria while delivering the only six winter survival tips you will ever need. These tips are foolproof, medically questionable, and absolutely not approved by anyone with credentials.From there, we spiral into Soulja Boy's fashion empire, influencer politicians, and the idea of Farrah Abraham becoming the mayor of Texas. I question who is buying Soulja Boy shoes with his face on them, wonder how much money it would take to ruin my public reputation with a full outfit, and seriously consider a future where podcasts replace government. None of this feels fake anymore and that part is concerning.I wrap things up with a rapid fire run through Mission Impossible logic, why the mission is always possible, why the bad guy is usually HR, and why face masks solve every problem.
