This week we're hanging off helicopters, sprinting across rooftops, and disarming nuclear bombs with the pulse-pounding Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018). Strap in as we break down the sixth entry in the franchise that somehow keeps getting better with age — just like Tom Cruise's running form.Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Fallout is a masterclass in high-octane action, espionage, and what happens when your best-laid plans go completely off the rails. Picking up where Rogue Nation left off, the film follows IMF agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) as he races to recover stolen plutonium and prevent a global catastrophe, all while being shadowed by CIA operative August Walker (a moustachioed Henry Cavill in full-blown hammer-mode).Mission: Impossible – Fallout is everything you want from a blockbuster: smart, stylish, and absurdly entertaining. It's the kind of movie that reminds you why the cinema was invented — big screen thrills, practical effects, and heroes just trying to do the right thing, even when the odds are impossible.Perfect for older teens and up, it's a great gateway to the M:I franchise or a highlight for returning fans. Just be warned — you may find yourself trying to reload your arms like Cavill afterwards. An action film operating at the absolute peak of its powers, Fallout proves that this franchise isn't slowing down anytime soon. In fact, it might just be the best of the bunch.

The Secret Teachings
BLACK Goo, Cubes & Mail (7/14/25)

The Secret Teachings

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 15, 2025 120:01

The discovery of “black goo” on a boat in Ohio has created a lot of speculation, especially after it was studied by the University of Minnesota Duluth and found to have “20 DNA sequences... including one that was completely novel.” Black Goo has been seen in countless movies, tv shows, music videos, and even commercials. At its core, the black represents void and abyss, the goo being nothing but an amorphous substance or blank canvas on which to paint anything. On a more literal level, this goo is real, be it faulty asphalt or raw sewage. In the case of what was found in Ohio, it is something very genetically mysterious.  From the X Files and Prometheus the substance is an alien virus or mutagenic pathogen. In District 9 it is a biological agent. In Venom it is a symbiot. In Star Trek it is a conscious of malevolence. In Lucy the substance is a drug that eventually allows for evolution of the chapter into a super-advanced intelligence transcending space and time as a black goo computer - when IBM unveiled their quantum computer it appeared as black goo in a clear black box. A few days previous there were two reports about a creature existing between life and death, and small xenobots operating in human cells after the body has died. The strange creature was called “Sukunaarchaeum mirabile,” a name coming from Japanese mythology: Sukuna & Bikona.  Sukuna translates as “lesser name” or “small" Bikona translates as “divine” or “renown.” The name represses the deity Sukunabikona's diminutive stature and humble or lesser status. It is often depicted as a small figure riding in a tiny boat or working alongside the more prominent deity Ōkuninushi. Boats are vessels of guidance across rivers like Nile or Styx, and they also bring civilizers like Oannes, Osiris, and Quetzalcoatl. A Japanese movie called The Boy and the Heron is the recent release from Studio Ghibili, featuring a heron that acts like Charon on the river Styx. The boat in Ohio that passed black goo was also called the Blue Heron. This black substance can also be found in Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, and Spirit Away. The Japanese connection is made strange when learning that scientists from that country were working on the hybrid creature in the X Files episode Nisei, which also means second generate, relating it to the Sukuna and that which generates secondarily. In other words, Sukunabikona and Nisei are the Japanese version of homunculus, or little diminutive human which in biology acts as a symbol of sperm in the microcosm. In the macrocosm it is the comet. It must not be coincidence that since 2017 we have seen three interstellar objects pass  through our solar system: Oumuamua, Borisov and Atlas in July 2025. The latter two were comets, made distinct by their tail, essentially making them sperm - “panspermia” means the chaotic distortion of life from the sperm comet to the egg planet. The black substance has also been part of the Covid narrative, due to something called black fungus that people have coughed up. It is therefore strange to find black substances in Moderna vaccines that were pulled from the market in several prefectures in Japan. We just learned this month that AG Pam Bondi just stopped an investigation into Pfizer, a company she was once legal counsel for. This comes after her dropping the Epstein client list, part of a large intelligence gathering operation and blackmail ring largely run by the MOSSAD of Israel. Things get even strange when considering that Epstein was working on a human engineering project with scientists and genetic researchers. It must not be a coincidence that the Trump administration on day one initiated the next stage of the Stargate project, pertaining to universal cancer shots or that RFK Jr. at the HHS authorized universal and flu vaccine development. The top four leaders at Pfizer and Moderna are 75% Jewish with ties to Israel, just as the Stargate Project is 50% the same. And to top it all off, on July 4, the President existed a black cube with his wife wearing a white dress and a black strap, both of which appear to represent the Tefillin worn by Jews, the very group RFK Jr. says are the least effected by Covid. That cube also appeared to display what looks like the entity in Mission Impossible, i.e., a truth eating digital parasite.   *The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. Incredibly, Gibson pitches to two more batters before leaving the game. Gibson was sidelined until Labor day. He would come back and would win 3 games in the World Series against the Red Sox.On July 15, 1973, Before 41,411 in Detroit, California Angels ace Nolan Ryan hurls his second no-hitter of the season in taming the Detroit Tigers, 6 - 0. Ryan fans 17 batters, the most ever in a 9-inning no-hitter, including eight straight, but only one over the last two innings. Nolan's arm stiffens while watching his team rally for five runs in the top of the 8th. With two outs in the 9th, Norm Cash, who had struck out his three other times at bat, comes to bat wielding a piano leg. Umpire Ron Luciano points out the illegality and Cash then pops out using a regulation bat. Ryan's eight strikeouts in a row ties the American League record he set last year. On July 15, 1990, Bo Jackson of the Kansas City Royals hits home runs in three consecutive at-bats before separating his shoulder trying to make a diving catch against Deion Sanders of the New York Yankees. Jackson's power surge helps the Royals to a 10-7 victory, but the two-sport star will miss the next six weeks. On July 15, 1994 - In the first inning at Comiskey Park, Chicago White Sox manager Gene Lamont accuses Cleveland Indians slugger Albert Belle of using a corked bat, and umpire Dave Phillips confiscates the bat and stores it in the umps' dressing room. In a Mission Impossible caper revealed in 1999, the Indians' Jason Grimsley crawls 100 feet along a ceiling, drops down into the dressing room, and exchanges Belle's bat for one of Paul Sorrento's. After the 3 - 2 Indians win, the switch is discovered to the consternation of the umps and the White Sox. The Indians subsequently turn over one of Belle's bats and Belle is given a 10-day suspension, later reduced to seven games.Historical Recap performed by:Robyn Newton from - Robyn SaysTrivia is provided by -Horseshide TriviaThis Day In Baseball is Sponsored by - www.vintagebaseballreflections.com - Join the membership today and listen to 50 years of baseball history told to you by the folks who were there! Watch on Philo! - Philo.tv/DTHThe president reaches out to thank Ethan and tells him that she wants him to bring her the key because if he gets rid of the Entity by himself, it would destroy cyberspace.  So he goes to meet up with Benji and go find Luther in a tunnel to figure out what's next, where Luther is hanging out with a hospital bed. They discuss that they need to find Gabriel, so that starts by breaking Paris out  She tells him to go to London but instead Gabriel captures them and explains to Ethan that retrieving Rabbits Foot actually set off this whole chain reaction. Ethan and Grace escape with Ethan faking his death and then him just going ham on some dudes.  They discover a device that Gabriel used to communicate with the Entity, this coffin-looking thing. He gets in and it's not good. It shows Ethan a vision of a coming nuclear apocalypse. He sees a vision of Luther dying, so he goes to try to stop him but it's too late. Gabriel put him in a cell with a bomb in it. He has 3 minutes to disarm or London will fall. If he does disarm it, it'll still explode but smaller so only Luther will die  When Ethan gets out of the tunnel, he runs into Briggs who arrests him. Ethan tells him he knows he's really the son of Jim Phelps. He tells Ethan this isn't about revenge. It's about Ethan never following orders and gambling with the fate of the world.  He's taken to  Kittridge who tells him it all comes down to this. They have less than 4 days to stop the Entity before it has the entire world's nuclear weapons.  He's taken into a room and President Sloan shows up. He says he needs the key and a plane. It's the only way he can destroy the Entity. The Entity is betting on you not trusting me  She finally gives in, gives him the key, and card that he'll know what to do with it when the time comes.  Ethan's team travels to St. Matthew Island in the Bering Sea, home to a Cold War–era sonar array that detected the Sevastopol's sinking. They locate former CIA analyst William Donloe, who was exiled to the island decades earlier after a break-in at CIA headquarters. They're supposed to share on a frequency where Ethan is supposed to go. But they have visitors.  Ethan can't wait anymore, so he just jumps in the ocean. Luckily, divers from the USS Ohio were waiting for him and they take him down to the sub.  Donloe admits that he wrote down the coordinates. He sends his wife out to the barn to “tend to the dogs” with Grace while he sends the coordinates then a fight and fire break out with the Russians. They successful get the USS Ohio the coordinates.  The captain of the USS Ohio explains they can't stick around cuz of the Russians. Ethan says their chamber was never apart of the plan.  Luckily, Grace is given a chamber from Donloe's wife.  Ethan makes it down to the submarine and it's not going great because it's on the edge of a cliff and it keeps moving which is tough. He is able to get the source code, but he has to escape through a torpedo tunnel which is too tight, so he has to take off the suit and then take off the mask. He makes it to the top but he's unconscious. Grace finds him and is able to cpr him back to life. She lays with him in the chamber until he wakes up.  Grace tells Ethan that she thinks he should control the Entity. He says no one can be trusted with this much power.  Now reunited with his team, they work on the next plan. Ethan outlines his plan to use the Poison Pill that Luther made before he died that is now in the hands of Gabriel. They would then upload and isolate the Entity on a physical drive, trapping it from the outside world. Ethan suspects Gabriel is already waiting at the South African bunker with the Poison Pill, aiming to seize control of the Entity by forcing Ethan to surrender the module. But that's what Ethan is banking on.  The president is running out of time and her team is trying to convince her to use their nucular bombs before it's too late.  Ethan prepares to enter the tunnel, expecting Gabriel to be there and fully ready to let Gabriel kill him for the sake of the plan.  Gabriel is indeed there and  reveals another nuclear device with a twenty-minute countdown, demanding the module. Ethan agrees, but the handover is interrupted by Kittridge & Briggs who wants the U.S. to control the Entity.  The bomb is activated when they show up which is unfortunate. Ethan explains they need to give the module to Gabriel.   A gunfight transpires with Gabriel's team and he is able to flee and Benji is shot but Ethan doesn't know it.  Ethan gets to a vehicle to chase Gabriel but it crashes so he has to run to catch up. He's late but he is able to grab onto a trailing plane which catches up to Gabriel's plane. He jumps off his and onto Gabriel's.  Paris performs emergency surgery on Benji as he guides Grace to reboot the bunker systems to trap the Entity while Donloe works to disarm the bomb.  Right as the president is about to press the button to make the attack, she decides to rather take our weapons offline but she's too late. The Entity takes control.  Ethan finds a second parachute, escapes with the Poison Pill, and unites it with the module, allowing Grace to finish the upload. Kittridge and CIA agent Jasper Briggs find Ethan; Kittridge is frustrated when Ethan hands over the destroyed module of the Sevastopol while Briggs — who is revealed to be James Phelps Jr., the son of Ethan's original team leader Jim Phelps — makes peace with him. The IMF team reunites in London, where Grace gives Ethan the Entity, now safely isolated on the drive, and the team goes their separate ways.

Monday afternoon means a fresh episode of Real Life was recorded, edited, and is ready to help you kick off your workweek. On today's podcast, the guys discussed Isaac Howard's future with the Oilers, construction issues in the city, and anything else that came about. The guys kicked off the Monday podcast with a discussion about construction in the city after Chalmers was late for the show because he was stuck in traffic. While being trapped at 1:30 PM on a Monday seems unlikely, it did lead to an interesting conversation about how navigating the city is almost impossible at this point. Will the construction be done by the end of summer? Unlikely. Changing topics, the guys discussed some of the changes the Oilers have made over the last week, including the trade for Isaac Howard and the swapping out of a handful of coaches. Starting with the Ice Man, the guys wanted to know how excited everyone is allowed to get about a hotshot prospect who has yet to play even a shift of NHL hockey. Despite winning the Hobey Baker Trophy, there is concern that he got the job done in his draft +2 season, which is unlike some of the winners who came before him. From there, the guys recapped Baggedmilk's weekend in Seattle and Chalmers' dislike of the new Mission Impossible movie because the villain wasn't evil enough. Talking about movies and TV led the guys to discuss the first week of Big Brother, even though Chalmers was the only one who had watched the first couple of episodes. If you're one of the listeners who hates when the boys talk BB, then this is your warning that the Big Brother talk will be kicking off shortly. Finally, the guys confirmed a location and date for Tyler's hole-in-one challenge. Thanks to the folks at Cattail Crossing, Tyler will be teeing off on August 18th to see if he's able to get the job done. While Tyler remains confident that he can get the job done, the conversation turned to the logistical side of the challenge and how it's all going to work so people at home can join in on the action. This episode explores surprising cyber security lessons hidden within Mission: Impossible's latest blockbuster. We analyze how Hollywood's depiction of AI threats, immutable backups, and air-gapped storage actually reflects real-world data protection challenges.Curtis and Prasanna dissect the movie's central premise: an AI entity altering digital reality, making it impossible to distinguish truth from fiction. The solution? An underwater Doomsday Vault containing an immutable, offline backup of the original source code. We discuss how this fictional scenario mirrors actual cybersecurity best practices, from 3-2-1 backup strategies to cryptographic hash verification.Key topics include the spectrum of immutability, why truly offline storage matters for ransomware protection, and how insider threats can compromise even the most secure systems. We also cover practical applications like object storage, SHA-256 hashing, and the human vulnerabilities that often undermine technical security measures. Whether you're a backup professional or just curious about data protection, this episode proves that sometimes the best cyber security lessons come from the most unexpected places.

John Evans was one of Howard Browne's many pseudonyms Even during his lifetime, Howard Browne (1908-1999) was not well known outside of his given fields. His novels, including his best detective fiction, were written under pseudonyms, and his work as editor and Hollywood writer, through credited, remained mostly unknown, except by those in the business. During his long lifetime Browne published hundreds of stories in science fiction and detective magazines, along with several novels. He wrote dozens of television shows including Mission Impossible, Run for Your Life, Maverick and Cheyenne, and three of his film scripts were produced: Portrait of a Mobster with Vic Morrow; The St. Valentine's Day Massacre with Jason Robards and George Segal; and Capone, starring Ben Gazzara. He also wrote radio scripts in the late 1940s. His day job, before he went to Hollywood, was as an associate editor under Ray Palmer and then editor for Ziff-Davis pulp magazines, which included Amazing Stories, Fantastic Adventures and other lesser known fiction magazines. Richard A. Lupoff interviewed Howard Browne at Browne's home in Southern California some time in the mid 1980s (the cassettes aren't labeled). This was Browne's only radio interview, and only the second extant interview on record (the other appeared in Locus Magazine). After he retired, Howard Browne taught a couple of college classes and worked on a big Chicago novel that never saw publication. Most of his work is out of print today, though his four noir novels, in the style of Raymond Chandler and featuring a detective named Paul Pine, are available in a small press edition published this past spring by Haffner Press, with an introduction by Richard A. Lupoff. If you go to Imdb, you'll find a long list of his television shows, many of which can be found streaming. Curiously, his novel Thin Air formed the basis for his first television credit, on the show Climax in 1955, and his last, for an episode of Simon and Simon in 1982. Thin Air was also the basis for an episode on yet a third program, The Rockford Files. Two minor points: Browne says he never wrote for Hawaiian Eye, yet IMDb claims he wrote an episode, and he says he retired in 1973 but his credits extend to 1975. In 2000, star Tim Cruise was in top of the world. By 2006, he had a bit of a PR problem. Though his previous film War of the Worlds was a certified hit, his off the screen presence was becoming more and more of a problem. Some people would say toxic. Getting in arguments played out in public with Brooke Shields's about the need to do away with prescribed drugs. To marrying a woman who was twenty years his junior. And of course jumping on talk show couches proclaiming his love for said woman. Directors were not wanting to work with him. And the general public, the same people who had spent tons of money to buy tickets to his movies, was rapidly starting to turn on him. So after a dissolved attempt to get David Fincher to direct Mission Impossible 3, perhaps the most important movie of Cruise's career, who does he turn to in order to resurrect his career? An unknown in the cinematic universe director by the name of JJ Abrams. Listen to Matt, Garrett and Adam dissect the sequel that would set a tone that would permeate through the entire rest of the franchise. Matt, not the biggest Abrams fan, and Garrett, certainly have their opinions that have been known in the past. But what about Adam? Stay tuned. mission Impossible Ghost Protocol isn't far behind.

This Week I Flashback.......The Soul Survivors, originally from New York City, grew up listening to the R & B groups of the 1950's. The sounds of groups like the Moonglows, Heartbeats, and Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers had a great influence on brothers Charlie and Rich Ingui. With various street corner groups, they developed their vocal skills. While in high school, Charlie joined the vocal group from Queens, N.Y. the Dedications. When, a year later the group's lead singer decided to leave, brother Rich was recruited. While performing at clubs in the New York area, they found themselves at the mercy of various house bands and decided to find a group of musicians who would become permanent members of the group therefore creating a self contained unit. The group would be renamed THE SOUL SURVIVORS.Shortly thereafter, the group began to build a strong following, playing venues in Atlantic City and Philadelphia. Enjoying great success in Philadelphia, they attracted the attention of record producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. Into the recording studio they went, emerging with " Expressway To Your Heart " a song that would climb to #3 on Billboard's R&B chart and #4 on it's Top 100 list. The success of " Expressway " became Gamble and Huff's first "crossover" hit when it began to be played on both black and white radio stations. It's success enabled Gamble and Huff to reach the large audiences they sought in order to bring their " Sound Of Philadelphia " to the mass Market. In polls taken by both the Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia's City Paper, " Expressway" was voted the number one record ever to come out of Philadelphia. "Expressway " was followed by two other chart records, "Explosion In My Soul" and " Mission Impossible". Their first album, released in 1968, was " When The Whistle Blows ". A second LP, on Atco Records, called "Take Another Look" appeared in 1969.During this time, the group toured extensively throughout the U.S. appearing with many different types of artists...everyone from Jackie Wilson, Smokey Robinson and The Miracles to Janis Joplin, the Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield, Sly and the Family Stone and countless others. In 1974, the Soul Survivors reunited with Gamble and Huff to record their self titled album "The Soul Survivors" on TSOP Records. It was written and performed in a style that would define the unique sound of The Soul Survivors. The album produced "City Of Brotherly Love" which would show up on Billboard's R&B Top 100 and become the group's fourth charted outing.© 2025 All Rights Reserved© 2025  Building Abundant Success!!Join Me on ~ iHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon Music ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy:  https://tinyurl.com/BASAud

Welcome to The B-Side! Here we sometimes talk about movie stars! We sometimes talk about movie directors! Today, we talk about both! Specifically, the B-Sides of the Mission: Impossible franchise. It's just Conor and I today folks, waxing poetic on Tom Cruise's legendary franchise and the B-Sides that we were inspired to discuss. We've chosen one for each of the Mission movies. It's also July 3rd on the day this episode is published, so happy 63rd birthday Tom Cruise! For the first Mission: Impossible, we speak on The Avengers from 1998. An adaptation of the popular British television series from the ‘60s, director Jeremiah S. Chechik's film was dismantled in post-production, slashed to ribbons following bad test screenings. The final product runs well under ninety minutes and is hard to understand. It sits on the other end of blockbusters in the ‘90s adapted from hit televisions from yesteryear. We also discuss the last five films Sean Connery made (animated film Sir Billi not included), as well as the ones he turned down. For Mission: Impossible II, we chose another John Woo American motion picture: Paycheck, starring Ben Affleck and The Avengers star Uma Thurman. This is a true B-Side, and the beginning of Affleck's now-infamous lost half-decade as a fledgling movie star. For Mission: Impossible III, we return to television inspiration. In honor of director J.J. Abrams, Conor and I go long on No Man's Land, one of the first produced screenwriting credits of Dick Wolf, who would go on to create the, ahem, Law & Order universe of shows. This Charlie Sheen/ D.B Sweeney vehicle walked so Point Break and The Fast and the Furious could run. There's chatter about David Ayer, that scene from Fire in the Sky, and how Charlie Sheen is always better when he plays the villain. For Ghost Protocol, we debate the Brad Bird B-Side Tomorrowland. We discuss libertarianism (for like two minutes) and the misbegotten message of the George Clooney blockbuster. For Rogue Nation we honor the Hitchcock homage of the opening and discuss one of Hitch's most underrated films: Topaz. Truly a can't-miss picture, which spurns a talk about the ideal Hitchcock leading man. For Fallout, there's Michael Mann's Blackhat. We appreciate the still underseen hacker epic, and make the claim that Chris Hemsworth is the best movie star of the original Avengers (Marvel this time, not British) not named Robert Downey Jr. For Dead Reckoning Part 1, Conor goes long on Hayao Miyazaki's Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro, from the little yellow car to the action to the animation. And, finally, for The Final Reckoning, we celebrate John Sturges' Ice Station Zebra. The second act of the final film in the series is a reimagining of sorts of the 1968 submarine epic, with way more stunts and underwater photography. There's also mention of the Billy Crystal 1997 Oscars opening, this lovely promo for the Albert Brooks movie Mother (ok it's not mentioned I just love it), and the Oliver Stone episode of the Light the Fuse podcast.
