Our February episode is here, and so is Lent! That means it's time to do some Spring Cleaning, and we're not talking about the dusting the baseboards and cleaning out the pantry type of Spring Cleaning. This month, we discuss how to Spring Clean internally. What does it mean to unclutter our spirts, souls, hearts, minds, etc? Joining us for the interview portion of this episode is Carla Gasser. Carla is the author of a new devotional entitled The Beauty of the Uncluttered Soul: Allowing God's Spirit to Transform You from the Inside Out. With Carla, we discuss what it means to unclutter our souls, but even more importantly, the fruit that uncluttering can produce in our lives. When we do the work, the fruit of God's Spirit can grow in us for His sake and for the sake of those around us. We also discuss, practically, what we're giving up for Lent this year and share resources to help as you prepare to Spring Clean during the Lenten season. Many people know Lent as the thing that happens between Pancake Day and Easter where you’re supposed to give something up. But Lent can serve a much deeper purpose if you explore it a little further. We thought it would be good to find out what Lent is all about, so we invited our good friend Richard Washington to join us for a chat. Richard is training to be a vicar in the Church of England. This year he should be ordained as a deacon and then a priest. He is studying theology, as well as mission and evangelism, which how we tell the story of the church and Jesus Christ. Even if you’re not religious, or if you follow a religion that doesn’t mark Lent in the calendar, this can still be a really great period of time for changing your drinking. [...] "The three earliest race hate BBS systems were: Info. International Network, Aryan Liberty Net, and White Aryan Resistance (W.A.R.) Net. [...] "Next to come online (in late 1984 or early 1985) was the White Aryan Resistance BBS in Fallbrook, California, under the auspices of Tom Metzger. Metzger announced the “W.A.R. Computer Terminal” in War ‘85, the newspaper of his White Aryan Resistance (Metzger, 1985). It originally ran on a Commodore 64 with a 300 bps modem (Sills, 1989). Today, most modems run at 56,000 bps, but back then, 300 bps was cutting-edge technology. According to Metzger, “Already White Aryan comrades of the North have destroyed the free speech blackout to our Canadian comrades” (Metzger, 1985). One of the first messages sent out by Metzger was directed at “any Aryan patriot in America who so desires” to arrange for local cable access channel broadcast of Metzger’s new cable TV program “The World as We See It,” later renamed “Race and Reason.” During this same period, there were over one dozen call-in telephone hot lines with recorded messages containing racist and antisemitic material." Overthrow, April/May 1985. "One of our correspondents made an interesting discovery last month. She found the telephone number for one of the bulletin board systems operated by American Nazis. With this number she was able to log on and get the information that the media has lately been all bugeyed about. Now we are prepared to talk intelligently on the matter. [...] "Our point here is simply this: you computer hackers and phone phreaks that are reading this have the ability to uncover and analyze circumstances in ways that most people can't. Some of you have the ability to recognize touch tones by ear. A few can tell where their calls are going by the sounds they hear. And still others are able to get into more than a few major systems and find the interesting stuff almost immediately. There is a very definite need in this world for such intelligence. Every authority figure in existence would like to get a piece of your abilities but very few are deserving of them. Besides, who really enjoys selling out?" While Brewster fought with a 28-year-old airport bus driver named Mulugeta Seraw, his fellow white supremacist Ken Mieske repeatedly swung a baseball bat into Seraw's skull. Mieske kept hitting Seraw while Brewster, then 19, kicked him with steel-toed boots. Mieske was convicted of murder and Brewster was convicted of first-degree manslaughter in Seraw's death. Released from prison in 2002, Brewster went back behind bars in 2008 for violating his parole by associating with members of the white supremacist group Volksfront. While finishing his term, Brewster was convicted of assaulting a prison guard. [...] "A WW correspondent says he observed Brewster brawling with leftist counterprotesters in a melee on the Capitol lawn. Brewster was also photographed donning a respirator mask and carrying a can of hornet- and wasp-killing pesticide, which he sprayed at left-wingers during the clash. Amid the fighting, Brewster and at least three other right-wing brawlers allegedly tackled a single counterprotester and briefly beat that person."
iIrish: Songs, Stories & Shenanigans, Podcast22: w/ Irish Immigration Atty Fiona McEntee When you want to know, where to go, what to do, to be seen, to make a difference, you come here, to iIrish: the Truth & the Pulse of what matters Hello Everyone! Welcome back to iIrish; Songs, Stories & Shenanigans. We have a great show for you today, including special guest Irish Immigration attorney Fiona McEntee, now based in Chicago. Just for a minute, we’re going to move From the Present to acknowledge the Past, and then roll forward: So, Let’s take a look at On This Day in Irish History: 2 February 1882 - James Joyce, poet, novelist and playwright, was born in Dublin. 3 February 1919 - Harry Boland and Michael Collins rescued Eamon de Valera from Lincoln jail, after smuggling keys that were hidden in cakes into the prison. 5 February 1921 - Katherine O’Shea (76), wife of Charles Stewart Parnell (1846-91) died 9 February 1854 - Edward Carson, lawyer and Unionist leader, was born in Dublin. Moving to the present: What’s the News, What’s the News? What’s the news today? Our February issue, tho COVID reduced, is still full of info, columns, entertainment and things to do. You will find so much - food recipes, including Cooking Up a Hooley In the Kitchen: Mini-Chedder & Bacon pasties. Katie’s column is a comfort food inspiration, and one of those, “I gotta try this” recipes – the whole idea is just what a covid heart needs. Plus, there is humor, opinion, profiles and history, book and music reviews, Irish Dance news, our monthly Speak Irish Lesson and monthly Irish Crossword Puzzle. February’s puzzle subject is Towns in Clare, Limerick and Kerry. The crosswords are a great way to learn or refresh your Irish knowledge, history and folklore, and all past issues, with the crossword inside, are available on OhioIANews.com. Conor Makem wrote a great column, titled, Newgrange: Ireland’s Neolithic Gem, this month, giving the history and highlights of the structure, built even before the pyramids. His photo of Newgrange is our February front cover. And a few more pics are inside and on the website. It starts with this: My father never forced anything down our throats, but if there was one thing that came close, it was the importance of an ancient mound of stone and earth in the Boyne Valley, known as Newgrange. He used to bring the family to experience it starting in the 1980s. Back then, we could just drive up to the base of the hill, walk past the unmanned booth where someone should have been selling tickets and explore. There was often no one else there, though occasionally we’d run across someone the old man inevitably knew. Many Ohio Irish American News readers will already know about Newgrange and will have their own stories about it, but I would be remiss in my son duties if I didn’t at least dedicate one column to it. What the heck is it? Newgrange was built by stone-age farmers 5,200 years ago, making it older than the Great Pyramids of Giza and Stonehenge. In fact, there wasn’t much that boiled my father’s bottom more than the international press swooning over the 100 stones in Wiltshire while simultaneously ignoring the gem of the Boyne Valley. But, I digress. Located in Meath, just west of Drogheda in County Louth, the circular mound … When we are all done here, hop over to the website to read The Rest of the Story, or pic up the February free issue at any of our 367 distribution locations. OhioIANews Columnist Bob Carney writes about St. Brigid, and there is more than one, in his Cleveland Comhra (conversation) Column this month. Brigid is considered a patron saint of Ireland just as St. Patrick is. February is recognized as the beginning of spring in Ireland, a time of growth and renewal. The Festival of Imbolg, on the first of February, celebrated the arrival of spring as the earth awakened after the dark winter months. Goddesses were important (Dee eh dees) deities in the ancient religions of the celts, as they were thought to play a daily role in the lives of the people. Brigid was the goddess most associated with (imm molg) Imbolg. Her name means, “the exalted one”. She was the patron of poetry, craft and healing and was often called upon by women in childbirth for protection and safe delivery of their child. Brigid was the daughter of the Dagda, chief god of the (tuath de dannan) Tuatha Dé Danann, and the Morrighan. With her flame red hair, she was also the goddess of fire and hearth, and a patron of warfare. She appears in many stories in Irish mytholog. In one, she is the wife of Bres, the ruler of the Tuatha Dé Danann. Their son, Ruadan, is killed in the second battle of Magh Tuireadh after wounding the god Giobhniu. Brigid went to the battlefield to mourn his death. Caoine Keening This is said to be the first caoine (keening) in Ireland. The practice of hiring women to caoine at a graveside continued up until recent times. Brigid’s caoine was so sorrowful that it caused all of the combatants to lay down their arms at the sound of it. As a result, the warriors of Leinster would seek her protection in battle. In other stories, she is wed to a different king, and her three sons slay Cian, the father of Lugh the Long-Arm. She is still known as the “Goddess of the Well” in pagan customs, a link to the fertility and life giving waters of Mother Earth. There has been a resurgence of pagan and druadic beliefs and practices in recent times. In Lough Gur, Co. Limerick, her feast day is celebrated with “green man” dancing around the fields, symbolizing the fertilizing of the earth. In the evening, her followers gather around a communal fire and listen to stories of the goddess. Of all the Celtic deities, she is the most universal and can be found in the mythologies of Northern Britain, Scotland, Western Europe, and Ireland. Patrick’s success as a missionary was partly a result of his ability to incorporate the familiar into his message of the Christian beliefs. The story of the shamrock to explain the Trinity is one example. He took traditions of the druids in Gaelic culture and tried to explain them, according to the teachings of Christianity. Later missionaries in other parts of the world would try to erradicate old beliefs and impose their Christian ideals by any means necessary. The chieftain of Leinster, a man named Dubhtach, and his people were ardent worshipers of the goddess Brigid, and refused to recognize any teachings that cast doubt on her position as the mother goddess. Yet, this is where the origins of Brigid the saint are found. Brigid of Kildara (Kiladare) … When we are all done here, hop over to the website to read The Rest of the Story, or pic up the free issue at any of our 367 distribution locations in and around Ohio. Our February of docs we missed in 2018 rolls forth, and this week Kevin Macdonald’s (NOT the “Kids in the Hall” cast member) biographical documentary “Whitney" gets the Herzog treatment. This film about the inimitable Whitney Houston and the runaway train of tragedy surrounding her and her family is one that might stay with Akil and Bob for a while. You could say that we GET SO EMOTIONAL BABY EVERY TIME WE THINK OF it. Sorry. Akil has been a big Whitney fan. Bob only has surface knowledge. Regardless we were blown back by some of the revelations within this documentary. The fact that this wasn't directed by a cast member of the Canadian skit comedy crew “The Kids in the Hall”, is just one of many shocking disappointments. Bob Sham singing is another disappointment. We will go ahead and apologize for that. This is the last episode before the Academy Awards! Who will win best Documentary? Who will watch the Academy Awards? Not us. We will probably be detoxing from all of the serious and sobering documentaries we discussed this month. We will get stupid again real soon. Apologies to Lionel Richie. Welcome back to your favorite film analysis podcast, the GoodTrash GenreCast. We bounce back from the mediocrity that was Aeon Flux with a look at 1988's Heathers. But that's not all! We are joined by a special guest this week. GoodTrash's own Frightful Femme Kirsten Therkelson sits down to discuss the film, which she has pegged on Letterboxd as a perfect film. If you think Kirsten has good taste in film, you should listen to her and Dalton discuss her history of film. Class is in Session with Heathers The 1988 cult classic Heathers features Winona Ryder as Veronica. Veronica is a member of the Heathers clique—made up of all girls named Heather. As Veronica grows tired of their bullying antics, she falls into a relationship with JD (Christian Slater). JD is a bit of a bad boy, and when Veronica figuratively exclaims how she wishes the Heathers would just die. JD literally takes her up on the idea. This week, we quickly offer up our Heathers review, which is fairly unanimous across the board. We then get into our gameplay where we rundown our Most Charming Pop Culture Psychopaths. But that's not all, we also crack open all of the subtext at work in Heathers. We hit on topics of school violence, feminism, sexual politics, absurdism and much more on this week's episode. Oh, there's the bell for lunch. Guess it's time for a LUNCHTIME POLL! GET IN TOUCH Thanks for joining us this week! Your favorite film analysis podcast is back to attempt to bring our trademark film analysis to the 2005 adaptation of Æon Flux. Karyn Kusama's (Jennifer's Body, The Invitation) follow up to Girlfight received mostly negative reviews, but does it deserve a re-evaluation? We get to the heart of the matter in this week's episode of the GoodTrash GenreCast. Suiting Up with Æon Flux Based off of an MTV-produced anime that began airing in 1991, Æon Flux is the story of a contract operative who is helping a rebellion take down the authoritarian government, led by Trevor Goodchild (Marton Csokas). The titular character, played by Charlize Theron, develops a more personal stake in the takedown as events progress. During her mission, she begins to encounter a new mystery that will change everything. This week, we do our best to flesh out Æon Flux. We discuss MTV Studios, reincarnation and cloning, and the heavy themes that the film tries to engage with. We also play a game, discussing Directors Who Should Make an Action Film. The flu is beginning to spread, don't you want our content to be the last you consume? GET IN TOUCH Thanks for joining us this week! On the first Friday in February we are dealing with the issue of Homelessness. We want to get beyond the stereotype and, look deeply and honestly at this growing sad cultural issue that surrounds all of us. Too many social issues have become the victims of dishonest and unfair stereotypes. Yes. There are homeless people who beg on many of the street corners in downtown Chicago. But did you know there are college students in the Chicago area who return to homeless shelters each night? Yes, there are. There are also many homeless people who hold jobs and work every day, but cannot make enough money to rent a place to live for themselves and their children. So they travel night after night from town to town with their children, to the humiliation of a shelter - trying to get back on their financial feet. This is occurring during these cold winter nights throughout the city and even in many of the best Chicago suburbs. Our February speaker, Mark McGreevy, made a commitment 27 years ago in London to bring an end to homelessness. That has led to 100 projects in 6 countries supporting over 23,000 people. We have much to learn about this issue that surrounds us all.

Our February meetup was kind of a sequel to an earlier meetup on how to get started. Among the aspiring podcasters in that audience were journalists Trisha Estabrooks and Alex Zabjek. At that point, they knew they wanted to do a podcast, but they had so many questions. They got some answers at that meetup, and found a lot more on their own on their way to launching The Broadcast, a show about women and politics in Alberta. So I decided to have them back to share what it took to pull the trigger. "You guys inspired us to dig a little deeper and figure it out," Trisha told the assembled podcasters. That was nice to hear! You'll also hear them talk about the weird obstacle of getting iTunes cover art; overcoming other technical and psychological barriers; understanding everything takes longer than you think; an interesting way to possibly get paid; the logistics of where to record when the Edmonton Public Library's Makerspace isn't available; and the difference between broadcasting and podcasting. This episode is also available in iTunes, on Google Play, on SoundCloud or on Stitcher. You can subscribe to The Broadcast in iTunes. You'll also find it on Facebook. Find the hosts on Twitter: @a_zabjek and @trishestabrooks. Thanks to CafeRista for catering, and Edmojis for pins to give our guests, and many thanks to our door prize donors: PodSummit, Western Canada's first podcasting conference, happening in Calgary on May 6 (I'll be there); Edmonton Opera, which has announced its 2017-18 season; Variant Edition, which also hosts the Edmonton Podcasting Meetup. The next meetup is March 26 on the topic of how to get more people to listen to podcasts, especially local ones. We'll have Chris Chang-Yen Phillips of Let's Find Out and Katrina Ingram of CKUA Radio on the panel. Sign up here. This episode of Seen and Heard in Edmonton is brought to you by Castria, where award-winning podcasters help you take your podcast from idea to reality. Nick Reed :: Creekside Church :: Sunday, February 21, 2016 Children are arrows and parents are archers, and eventually we will need to let our kids fly. Where will we aim them? Our February 21st Connect service began with a baby dedication, a time of prayer and pledge of support for our kids and their families in raising them in the Lord. Nick Reed then preaches from Psalm 127, reminding parents to hold up our children in prayer, consider them a blessing (not an inconvenience), and keep God the target of our own lives. We can't change the hearts of our children, but we can be faithful in teaching them to love Jesus in faith that He who loves them more that we ever could will never stop pursuing them.

Our February show comes in just under the wire. We think it was worth the wait. Aside from our usual round up of Disney and theme park news, we've got an outstanding interview with Robbie Sherman (son of Disney legend Robert Sherman of the Sherman Brothers).
