I'm very pleased to be joined this week by Matthew Robinson, who is the screenwriter of the new film, Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die. It is the rarest of things: a mid-budget, high-concept, sci-fi action-comedy. Starring Sam Rockwell as a time-traveler from a ruined future (or possibly just a bum with a fake bomb strapped to his chest), Robinson and director Gore Verbinski (The Ring, Pirates of the Caribbean) have crafted a piercingly satirical take on our obsession with screens, our inability to deal with the tragedy of modern living, and the creeping fire that all-powerful AI will wind up killing half of us and enslaving the rest. It's opening wide on February 13, and I really hope you check it out. I may write a hair more about it in my newsletter though I probably won't review it properly as I try not to review movies made by people I've interviewed so as to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest. (Ethics, baby!) That said, I strongly recommend going to see it in a movie theater if for no other reason then to demonstrate that there is an audience for original films with a clear point of view and something to say about our world and our moment.

In December of 2024, I shared an episode about a 24-year-old musician whose life was cut short in New Haven, Connecticut in 1990. More than three decades later, the murder of John Evers Robinson remains unsolved and the questions surrounding what happened to him have only grown more complicated with time.I'm bringing this story back because it needs your attention and action in a new way. All I could think was that my big brother wasn't in the world anymore. That moment left an indelible mark on my perception of the world. That moment was the beginning of my instinct to never stop seeking for justice, to never let the people who did this think they got away with murder. Those feelings I felt on that day with my family are the eternal repository of energy that I pull from each year as I continue to invite accountability for my brother's brutal unsolved murder. Unfortunately, a lot of families know this feeling. The feeling of decades passing, sometimes even knowing who's responsible, but never enough evidence to get resolution. Every year I actively continue the momentum of his case by sharing his story in a new way. This year it's by starting a petition on change.org to increase the reward money for new leads from witnesses. We know a lot of time has passed, but over the last few years as we've talked to John's friends and visited New Haven, we have experienced how fresh people's memories are still of John, and of the time that he went missing, and then was found dead. We believe that there are people out there who know more and can share more than they ever have before. Please come forward and share what you know. Scott Aaronson is the Schlumberger Centennial Chair of Computer Science at The University of Texas at Austin, and director of its Quantum Information Center. I have long had an interest in both the Keswick movement and the East Africa Revival. Dr Robinson Kariuki Mwangi's doctoral research brings the two together. His book is The Influence of Early Keswick Theology of Sanctification in the Socio-ethical Life of the East African Revival Movement: A Missional Perspective (Langham Academic, 2025). In this episode I frame my questions as an interested observer to allow Dr. Mwangi to explain his findings. The issue is this. Sanctification is an essential part of every Christian life. But how do its differing theologies shape our Christian walk and wider socio-ethic contexts? Grounded in the East Africa Revival Movement (EARM), this work seeks to answer how the Keswick theology of sanctification contributes to the socio-ethical understanding of "walking in the light" and consequently influences the mission of the Anglican Church in the Mount Kenya region. Dr. Mwangi uses exegetical analysis to understand the biblical roots of revival and sociological surveys and focus groups to understand how adherents of revival have developed in this region of Kenya. In a big Supreme Court showdown over trucking accidents, major business groups have filed a friend-of-the-court brief supporting freight brokers. The case, Shawn Montgomery v. Caribe Transport II, LLC, et al., stems from a 2018 crash where a trucker hired through broker C.H. Robinson hit Montgomery's car, causing injuries. Montgomery sued the broker for negligent hiring, claiming CH picked an unsafe carrier. The Seventh Circuit Court said federal law blocks such state lawsuits against brokers. Now, the Supreme Court will decide. Louisiana's congressional districts, which it redrew following the 2020 census, currently sit in a state of legal uncertainty.The map initially only had one majority-black district. However, following a 2022 case called Robinson v. Ardoin (later Laundry), which held that it violated section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, Louisiana re-drew the map to include two majority-black congressional districts.In January 2024, a different set of plaintiffs sued alleging the new map violated the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments. The case rose to SCOTUS and was heard as a part of the OT24 term. The issues before the Court included (1) Whether the majority of the three-judge district court in this case erred in finding that race predominated in the Louisiana legislature’s enactment of S.B. 8; (2) whether the majority erred in finding that S.B. 8 fails strict scrutiny; (3) whether the majority erred in subjecting S.B. 8 to the preconditions specified in Thornburg v. Gingles; and (4) whether this action is non-justiciable.On June 27, 2025, rather than issue a decision on the case, the Supreme Court issued an order restoring the case to the OT 25 calendar for reargument. This time, the Court has explicitly granted the question of "Whether Louisiana’s intentional creation of a second majority-minority congressional district violates the 14th or 15th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution." At Robinson's drugstore in Dayton, local booster George Rapier and others recruited 24-year-old science teacher John Scopes to violate the law as a test case to generate publicity for the town. His practice has continued to develop as Jeremy has added a team coaching certification and group coaching work to his executive coaching remit.
