He soon moved thereafter to Washington, D.C. where he wrote his first book, Guards of the Heart, consisting of four plays written in poetic form. In Washington D.C., he worked at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and was extraordinarily active in the cultural scene of that city. He served as the President of the Board of the Poetry Committee at The Folger Shakespeare Library from 1994-1997 and as the Literary Editor of the arts bi-monthly The Washington Review from 1991-1997. He also Co-founded and directed the In Your Ear poetry reading series at the District of Columbia Arts Center. During these years Ross continued to publish poetry, including How to Write; or, I used to be in love with my jailer (Texture Press, 1992); An American Voyage (Sun & Moon Press, 1993); Push (Leave Books, 1994); De-flections (Potes and Poets, 1994); Full Silence (Upper Limit Music, 1995); and The Fuzzy Logic Series (Texture Press, 1996). His poetry reveals close links with the "Language" poets but seeks in its often disjunctive structure, puns, and linguistic riddles, to be accessible to a large audience. Many of Ross's poems are subliminally political while concerned with love and interrelations between individuals. The American Voyage, in particular, concerns the idealism of American culture and its failures as a culture to live up to those ideals. Douglas Messerli, Publisher of Sun & Moon Press In 1997 he received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship Award for his poetry and moved to San Diego, where he worked for The City of San Diego Commission's for Arts and Culture. In 1999, he left that position to put his poetics into practice, and to work directly in politics. He served as the Senior Chief of Policy for several elected officials. He also continued to be very active in the San Diego cultural scene, serving as a board member of the San Diego Art Institute and Co-founding and curating the Beyond the Page reading series in that city. Two more books appeared: The Wood Series (Seeing Eye Books, 1997); and EQUATIONS=equals (Green Integer, 2004). In 2003 he received his first of three Gertrude Stein Poetry Awards. In 2004, he moved to Paris, where he continues to publish while working in communication and social change. photo of the artist by Frederick Aranda Joey Terrill is a formative figure in the Los Angeles Chicano art movement and AIDS cultural activism. Painting and making art since the 1970s, Terrill has always explored the intersection of Chicano and gay male identity (where they overlap and where they clash) as a strategy for much of his art production. A native Angeleno, he attended Immaculate Heart College and lists influences as diverse as Pop Art, Corita Kent, David Hockney, Mexican retablos, and 20th-century painters ranging from Romaine Brooks to Frida Kahlo. His work conveys the energy, politics and creative synergy of Chicano and queer art circles in Los Angeles. His works from the 1970s and 80s are considered pioneering examples of a queer sensibility and Latinx identity. He has been living with HIV sine 1980. His work was featured in Axis Mundo: Queer Networks in Chicano L.A. which opened at MOCA LA in 2015 and toured to venues in NY, Denver, Las Vegas , Houston, Massachusetts and Ohio  with its final iteration at moCa Cleveland in 2021. Some selected exhibits he has been in include: Drama Queer, Queer Arts Festival, Vancouver, BC -2016. In our 50th episode, I have a wonderful conversation with Andrew Utt, the Executive Director of the Institute of Contemporary Art in San Diego. We talk about the importance of art within culture, its ability to connect people and communities, and how it can expand perspectives. Andrew also shares more about his journey with art and how he became part of ICA. Hear how the organization has grown and changed in just the last couple years, and what they're working toward next. Guest Bio Andrew Utt is the Executive Director of the Institute of Contemporary Art, San Diego and is a curator, arts administrator, and educator with a bachelor's degree from the California College of Arts and Crafts and a master's degree in Museum Studies from Harvard University. For the past 20 years, he has worked in the arts with museums and galleries based in California, Argentina, and Colombia. He has managed and developed art educational programs, exhibitions, fundraisers, marketing initiatives, and digital advances in different languages and cultures throughout North and South America, Europe, Africa, and New Zealand. In San Diego, he has worked with the Mingei International Museum, the San Diego Art Institute, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, while in the Bay Area, he has worked with the Museum of Craft & Design, the Natural World Museum, and Art Works for Change. In 2009, he co-curated VIBA Festival, an international video art festival in Buenos Aires, Argentina along with an installation at the Eva Peron Museum. In 2010, he co-founded and directed Galería MÜ in Bogotá, the first gallery dedicated solely to fine-art photography in Colombia. In 2019, Andrew joined the Lux Art Institute as Executive Director and engaged in a merger of Lux and the San Diego Art Institute to create the ICA San Diego, where he maintains the position as Executive Director. Andrew's artistic interest areas focus on alternative photographic processes, video art, and contemporary art from the Americas. He currently lives in San Diego with his wife and daughter. Born in Israel, Tami is a lens-based artist (aka "LENS CRAFTER"), whose passion lies in molding the beauty of humanity into something extraordinary. She strives to push the boundaries of her own imagination, as well as the viewer's, by creating bold works of art from striking perspectives. Creating staged tableaux, Tami explores the performative nature of portraiture in many of her photographs, influenced by Renaissance and Neoclassical conventions of still-life and chromatic symbolism. After moving to the west coast, Bahat turned her creative interests to photography and was recognized by the U.K. publication Nikon Owner Magazine. Soon after, the work appeared on the cover along with a feature story detailing her as an artist. Tami was a finalist for the Julia Margaret Cameron Award and received a Spotlight Award for Black & White Magazine. In 2014, her work was exhibited at Fotofever Paris. In 2016, Bahat was selected for Critical Mass Top 50 and she received an award from the San Diego Art Institute. Bahat's solo exhibitions include Building Bridges Art Exchange in Los Angeles, This is No Fantasy in Melbourne and the Catherine Edelman Gallery in Chicago. She also won a Young Masters Emerging Woman Art Prize from the Cynthia Corbett Gallery in London in 2019. Aunia Kahn's work in trauma and mental health has grown over the years and has created a launching pad for the Healing Art Creatively Program. Art and trauma-related work first came together as a passion and purpose with her career's first exhibition Voices Within Surviving Through the Arts (St. Louis Artist Guild 2005) where her art took on subjects of abuse and trauma and was awarded for her endeavors. Later, she was invited for consecutive years as a panelist for the Washington University School of Medicine's MOHOP (Mental Health Outreach Program) and has regularly been a guest lecturer at Southwestern Illinois College speaking abuse, trauma and medical trauma. With her interest to create a supportive and interactive tool to support people working through trauma and adversity, she authored the “Inspirations for Survivors” deck. She has also worked as a mentor at OSLP Art & Culture Program, collaborating one-on-one with students who have developmental disabilities on projects and assisted the program in building their student's portfolios. As a curator, she has curated exhibitions focusing on trauma and mental health such as Darkest Dreams a Lighted Way (2008) and Empathic: A Mental Health Awareness Exhibition (2016) and Touch By Violence (2013). She continues her work in the field teaching courses, offering free resources, and providing tools to those that need. Her work has been in over 300+ exhibitions in over 10 countries; at places such as San Diego Art Institute, Los Angeles Center for Digital Art, iMOCA, St. Louis Art Museum, Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, Mitchell Museum, and the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art. Her portraits, self-portraits, and vanitas still life photography in series such as The Golden Age, Crossroads, White Privilege, Colonized Foods, Ghosts, and individual works such as Take a Look Inside and How to Make a Country ask the viewer to question the stories of history and heritage we were taught to believe.   Alanna was named on the 2021 Silver List as one of 47 exciting contemporary photographers to follow. She is a 2020 San Diego Art Prize winner and recipient of the 2020 Michael Reichmann Project Grant Award. Her photographs have been exhibited at Catherine Edelman Gallery in Chicago, Art Miami with Catherine Edelman, San Diego Art Institute, Pentimenti Gallery in Philadelphia, Colorado Photographic Arts Center in Denver, and Candela Gallery in Richmond, Virginia. Her work has been acquired for the Virginia Museum of Fine Art's collection and three prints from The Golden Age were recently added to the Center for Creative Photography's permanent collection. Airitam has been elected Board Member and led workshops and mentorships for Oakwood Arts and a Board Member for Medium Photo she was the Juror of the 2021 Black Photographers Scholarship Program for Medium Photo, and a Curator/Juror for the MFA Photography Reviews. Internationally recognized artist Amir H. Fallah is known for his vibrant figurative work that draws from western painting vocabulary and turns the history of portraiture on its head. The work explores how one reconstructs identity and asks the question, how do you describe someone without showing their physical likeness? It's incredibly powerful work that is also personal. In this interview, Amir talks about his background, how he began creating his current work, and his recent public pieces that were unveiled in California.    Amir H. Fallah received his BFA in Fine Art & Painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art and his MFA in painting at the University of California, Los Angeles. He has exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibitions across the United States and abroad. Selected solo exhibitions include the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tucson; South Dakota Art Museum, Brookings SD; Schneider Museum of Art, Ashland OR; San Diego Art Institute; and the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Overland KS.   In 2009, the artist was chosen to participate in the 9th Sharjah Biennial. In 2015, Fallah received the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant. In 2019, Fallah's painting Calling On The Past received the Northern Trust Purchase Prize at EXPO Chicago. Fallah creates paintings, murals, and installations that explore systems of representation embedded in the history of Western art. His ornate environments combine visual vocabularies of painting and collage to deconstruct traditional notions of identity formation, while simultaneously defying expectations of the genre for portraiture by removing or obscuring the central figure. In Fallah's works, the absence of the sitter's likeness is substituted with a wider representation of their personhood—one that spans time and cultures and is articulated through a network of symbols and imagery. Fallah's paintings question not only the historical role of portraiture, but the cultural systems that are used to identify one person from another.    When autobiographical, Fallah's paintings employ a lexicon of symbols that amalgamate personal narratives with historical and contemporary parables. The paintings serve as a diary of lessons, warnings, and ideals providing coded insight into the formation of an identity, while investigating cultural values often passed between generations. When non-autobiographical, portraits of veiled subjects capitalize on ambiguity to skillfully weave fact and fiction, while questioning how to create a portrait without representing the physicality of the sitter. Although the stories that surround his subjects are deeply personal and are told through the intimate possessions they hold most dear, this work addresses generational immigrant experiences of movement, trauma, and celebration.    Fallah wryly incorporates Western art historical references into paintings formally rooted in the pattern-based visual language of art historical works from the Middle East. In doing so, his paintings possess a hybridity that reflects his own background as an Iranian-American immigrant straddling cultures. As seen in the artist's tondos—circular paintings originally used in Renaissance portraiture—Fallah reinterprets classical floral paintings that entangle references to Dutch still lives and Persian miniatures. These botanicals depict flora that don't “naturally” occur in the same ecosystem; this serves as a metaphor for immigrants that attempt to thrive in their new country, creating a new space that spans the limits of geography and disrupts the fallacy of borders.    Neither of this world or the next, Fallah's works reside in the liminal space of being ‘othered'. The paintings utilize personal history as an entry point to discuss race, representation, and the memories of cultures and countries left behind. Today's guest is the profoundly talented Nina Isabelle. She is a process based artist working with perception, action, language, and phenomena. Her practice is a method to sort and solve the inconsistencies of language, memory, and form, and she makes paintings, drawings, photographs, video, sculpture, sound, performance and writing as inquiry into how sensory perception functions as the impetus for action, reaction, response, and choice making in art and life.Her work has been presented at The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts in New York City, The Queens Museum as part of Emergency Index Documentation Discussion, Judson Memorial Church, Grace Exhibition Space, and ABC No Rio in Exile at Bullet Space in NYC with Feminist Art Group, as well as at Para//el Performance Space and The Ear in Brooklyn, NY. Internationally her projects have been presented at Czong Institute for Contemporary Art in Gimpo, South Korea, The Unstitute in Catalunya, Spain, Bangkok Underground Film Festival in Thailand, and NA Gallery in South Korea. Jane Szabo is a Los Angeles based fine art photographer, with an MFA from Art Center College of
Design in Pasadena, CA. Her work investigates issues of self and identity. Using self-portraiture and
still life as a vehicle to share stories from her life, her work merges her love for fabrication and
materials, with conceptual photography. Szabo brings many facets of visual art into her photographic
projects, incorporating sculptural, performance and installation elements into her work. Her imagery is often infused with humor and wonder, ingredients that draw the viewer in, inviting them to linger and to have a dialogue with the work, and themselves. Her background in the film industry, creating prop and miniatures for theme parks, and overseeing set construction for film and television, undoubtedly informs her creative process. Szabo’s photography has been exhibited widely, including solo shows at the Museum of Art & History in Lancaster, CA, Orange County Center for Contemporary Art, the Yuma Fine Art Center in Arizona, and the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art. Her work has been included in exhibitions at Oceanside Museum of Art, the Griffin Museum of Photography, Houston Center of Photography, Tilt Gallery, Davis Orton Gallery, The Colorado Center for Photographic Arts, San Diego Art Institute, Los Angeles Center for Photography, Gallery 825 in Los Angeles, the Kaohsiung International Photographer Exhibition in Taiwan, and Foto Fever in Paris, France. Two Dimensional Biographies by Amir H. Fallah   Los Angeles based painter Amir H. Fallah renders two-dimensional biographies of his subjects using alternative imagery to create a visual language that helps us understand who a person is. Though surrounded by intimate belongings, the faces and bodies of Fallah’s subjects are covered in highly ornate fabric, turning everything we know about portraiture upside-down.   Brainard Carey wrote, in Praxis Interviewmagazine: “Portraits of the artist’s veiled subjects employ ambiguity to skillfully weave fact and fiction like the textiles that cover them. While the stories that surround his muses are deeply personal, as told through the intimate possessions the subjects are encompassed by, they universalize generational experiences of movement, trauma, and celebration. With their Pop Art hues and investment in domestic life, Fallah’s paintings wryly incorporate contemporary American tropes into paintings more formally rooted in Islamic Art, including the organization and arabesque embellishment of Persian miniatures. In doing so, his work possesses a hybridity that reflects his own background as an Iranian- American immigrant straddling cultures.”   In 2017, Judson Studios translated two of Fallah’s paintings into stained glass. Embracing the World, the artist’s stained and fused glass self-portrait, alludes to Renaissance paintings of mother and child. An homage to his son, the piece was sold before the opening of Fallah’s solo show at Shulamit Nazarian Gallery in LA. A second Judson collaboration, entitled Offering, features Fallah’s portrait of an Iranian artist who came to America to pursue her art career the day after The Supreme Court upheld Trump’s Muslim ban.     Fallah received his BFA in Fine Art and Painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2001 and his MFA in Painting at the University of California, Los Angeles in 2005. He has exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibitions across the United States and abroad, including solo presentations at the Schneider Museum, Ashland, Oregon (2017); the San Diego Art Institute (2017); the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Overland, Kansas, (2015); and The Third Line, Dubai (2017, 2013, 2009, 2007, 2005).  The recipient of the 2017 California Community Foundation Grant and 2015 Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant, the artist was chosen to participate in the 9th Sharjah Biennial. This event enriches the cultural landscape of the Gulf by commissioning, producing, and presenting innovative and challenging art experiences for the United Arab Emirates community while offering an internationally recognized platform for artists from the region.   As his work attracts new collectors in painting and glass, Fallah will participate in three solo exhibitions in 2019-2020: the first in August 2019, at Dio Horia gallery in Greece; then in January 2020 at MOCA Tucson; followed by April 2020 at Shulamit Nazarian Gallery in Los Angeles. The artist is currently working with Judson Studios on a large public stained glass project for LA City to be unveiled in 2021.

Hello listeners, We're back another week and this time we had a conversation with Susanna Peredo Swap. Susanna has over twenty years of experience as an arts administrator, actor, jazz vocalist, arts advocate, and public relations specialist. While working for the San Diego International Airport Art Program she curated over eighty exhibitions with some of San Diego’s best museums, artists and galleries; as well as a fantastic roster of talent for its performing arts series. She currently serves on the board of the San Diego Art Institute and has previously served as VP of the Alliance Française de San Diego, VP of the San Diego REPertory Theatre, President of the National City Public Art Committee and Vice Chair on the Port of San Diego’s Public Art Committee. Susanna is a magna cum laude graduate of San Diego State University where she majored in Humanities, and minored in French. She holds a Professional Certificate in The Cycle: Management of Successful Arts and Cultural Organizations from the Devos Institute of Arts Management, University of Maryland; a Professional Certificate in Business for Arts and Nonprofit Arts Organizations from University of San Diego; a Certificate in Photography: Images and Techniques from University of California, San Diego; studied Art History at the Université Paris Sorbonne (Paris IV); and History of Video Art at the École du Louvre in Paris, France. Her passion for the visual, performing, and culinary arts has taken her to over fifteen countries and inspired her to create an organization that aims to bring people together across different backgrounds, interests and creative professions. We talked about Susanna's childhood between Mexico and San Diego. What it was like to live in a border town, how she travelled abroad since she was young and how discovering other cultures lead her to ultimately do what she does now. We also talked about the importance of creative collaborations and how bringing people together creates a stronger community with a richer culture. Ginger Shulick Porcella is the Executive Director of the San Diego Art Institute, an experimental, bi-national contemporary arts center in San Diego, CA. I met San Diego artist Pastilla in March at the MAS Attack event at the San Diego Art Institute, and after talking with her for a few minutes I knew that I wanted to continue the conversation. We started off talking about the piece of hers that had moved me so much when we first met, "La Metamorfosis de Kafka F2," about the story behind its creation, the frustration and tension in the piece itself. For Pastilla, the act of creating art functions like meditation, and we talked about her background in photography as well as the idea of accessibility. For the second segment, she chose as her topic the ways in which an artist can engage with and impact her community, which led to a discussion of stereotypes and stories. Photographer Rebecca Louise Webb recently opened a two-person show at the San Diego Art Institute looking at the way that young people interact with the natural world. Rebecca's portion of the show drew from her new series Mother: Nature, which came out of her profound feeling of ambivalence about the impact of technology on the life of her teenage son. I had the opportunity to sit down with Rebecca, and we talked about technology, parenting, and how both of us make deeply personal work. Later in the conversation we discussed a recent article about Elinor Carucci and our thoughts on the balance between intellectual and emotional art.
