It's been awhile since I have shared something from John Maxwell's “Daily Reader.”  This is from September 16 and it deals with Significance over Security.  It gets us thinking about settling for security (and in today's world, that sounds great with all of the crazy things going on), but it also gets us thinking about how significant we are in our lives.  It's a mind shift to our purpose and our life's mission. Doesn't matter our age or where we are in our lives, we can always make the shift he shares in this. This has been on my heart, on my mind and in my actions for a long time. I just need to turn up the heat of me going after this now in my life. How about you?  Thanks for listening.  Please take a few moments to subscribe & share this with someone, also leave a 5 Star rating on Apple Podcasts and ITunes or other services where you find this show.  Find me on Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/coachtoexpectsuccess/   on Twitter / “X”:  @coachtosuccess   and on Instagram at:  @coachjohndaly  - My YouTube Channel is at: Coach John Daly.   Email me at: CoachJohnDalyPodcast@gmail.com     You can also head on over to https://www.coachtoexpectsuccess.com/ and get in touch with me there on my homepage along with checking out my Top Book list too.  Other things there on my site are being worked on too.  Please let me know that you are reaching out to me from my podcast.

Saw a post that was funny, sad, but (to me) very true! It was from “Echoes of the Past” and the quote was an image of an older cowboy sitting on a horse with a slight smile and he is saying: “I guess they had to invent artificial intelligence since real intelligence is running out.”  My first thing I did was have a little smile and chuckle, but then quickly went  to a kind of sad feeling. But, I do feel the part of “real intelligence” disappearing quite fast. My thought is to invest in yourself in “human skills”. Those skills that (I think) technology cannot replace. For sure, learn about AI and other intelligence things, but don't let them replace your human skills. That's the key!

398 Everything We Do Can Create A Story   Every living breathing moment, we contribute to our own story. Every job, every interaction with another soul, every moment we reflect, we write a significant line in our story and oftentimes we must take time to truly consider what we truly want to have in our story. Do we want exhaustion or loneliness to rule our narrative? Or do we want to forge our own community based on that which brings us joy and cherish the light within us? These are the questions we must ask ourselves. In today's episode Sarah Elkins and Tracy MacDonald discuss the importance of living as much as possible, from adventures around the globe, to taking a moment to just breathe and take in the beauty of nature. And how in doing so you create a life for yourself and those you love to be proud of.    Highlights Are your actions in alignment with how you want people to remember your story? What is grounding to you?  What relationships, whether it be a place like nature or people around you, have you developed out of loneliness? It's never too late to change your label. What fears did you have and how did you get through them? And would that fear have stopped you?   Quotes “Nature is always consistent, and I can go out and I can look for the beauty. And I find it really grounding.”  “The more you practice getting outside your comfort zone, the more comfortable you become with it.” “I think you learn so much about America by being outside of it.” “Your skills are never wasted. Sometimes you're tapping into skills you learned early in your career and there's nothing wrong with that.” “It's interesting the stories that strangers will share with each other."   Dear Listeners it is now your turn, Some of the things that Tracy said that are really strong in my memory, is that when she was facing things she was afraid of and she knew she wanted to push through, she asked a lot of questions. Open to taking risks. She prepared in that way and she practiced. She talked about doing this over and over and over again, knowing that once she stepped into her stretch zone once, she could stretch even further every time she did it again. She has a limited fear of failure allowing her to learn from each thing and here's the kicker; When she's brave, she likes how she feels about herself. She knows she's modeling the behavior she wants to see in people around her.   Friends it's your turn. What are you going to do next that you're a little bit afraid of that you can ask enough questions to feel confident enough to step into that stretch zone? And start practicing. I'd love to hear your thoughts.    And, as always, thank you for listening.    About Tracy Tracy, a native of Columbus, Georgia, is a dynamic Fraud and Risk Consultant, public speaker, and former Special Agent with the U.S. Secret Service. With an impressive career that spans roles such as Counter-Terrorism Instructor for the Defense Intelligence Agency and Lead Associate in Counter-Illicit Finance for Booz Allen Hamilton, Tracy exemplifies what it means to break barriers and lead with resilience and excellence. Be sure to check out Tracy's LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and her blog Carpe Diem Creative!   About Sarah "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana. Be sure to check out the Storytelling For Professionals Course as well to make sure you nail that next interview!

Let's Flip Constant Striving For Improvement In personal development, we're always told to chase “constant and never-ending improvement.” And yes, growth matters. But what if the pressure to always improve is actually holding you back? In this 5-minute quickie, I invite you to flip that idea. Instead of endlessly striving, take a moment to recognise the incredible skills and wisdom you already have. From communication, relationships, and problem-solving to resilience and creativity — you've built a lifetime of tools. Here's the thing: if you don't use them, you risk losing them. But by consciously using what you've learned — through selfless service, sharing, and living intentionally — you keep those skills alive, and they keep growing. So today's muse is simple: stop chasing for a minute and start using. You'll not only feel richer inside but also make a difference to others around you. Because personal growth isn't just about “more” — it's about sharing what you've already got. On the 140th episode of What is a Good Life?, I'm delighted to welcome Robert Poynton. Rob is the author of Do Conversation, Do Pause, and Do Improvise. He divides his time between an off-grid home in rural Spain and Oxford, where he is an Associate Fellow at the Saïd Business School and convenor of the Oxford Praxis Forum at Green Templeton College. Rob is a designer, host, and facilitator of learning experiences; an amateur practical philosopher; a keeper of hens; and the founder of Yellow Learning. In this conversation, Rob shares his sense of living with more aliveness. We explore following the energy rather than the “shoulds”, noticing visceral signals of “deathly” work, practising curiosity and softness in everyday tasks, infinite games versus fixed goals, and how trusting life's unfolding leads to a life of joy. This episode is an invitation to soften, to follow what feels alive, and to let life reveal itself through experience and energy rather than theory. For more of Rob's work:Website: https://robertpoynton.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/robert-poynton-169402/ Contact me at mark@whatisagood.life if you'd like to explore your own lines of self-inquiry through 1-on-1 coaching, my 5-week group courses, or to discuss team coaching to stimulate greater trust, communication, and connection, amongst your leadership teams.- For the What is a Good Life? podcast's YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/@whatisagoodlife/videos- My newsletter: https://www.whatisagood.life/- My LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-mccartney-14b0161b4/00:00 How can we make life more joyful?04:20 Paying attention to that sinking feeling06:40 Making decisions others found unusual10:50 Following the breadcrumbs and energy18:11 Noticing when we contract and soften24:30 Noticing, allowing, and becoming32:00 Life wants to happen39:15 Collaboration more present than competition42:30 The allure of drama and conflict48:20 Holding two conflicting ideas at once51:15 The surprises that bring us alive57:50 Summary and is a good life for Rob?

I found a great connection with some understanding and uplifting items that I needed today, and it all came from Mark Hickie (@MPHickie) where he shared his introduction to post today: “A message for today … Life isn't always fair — but that doesn't mean you have to give up. Refuse to be ruled by negativity. Stay strong, stay positive & keep moving forward. You are capable of achieving far more than you believe.” This got my attention right away as I saw that I was letting life beat me up a bit lately. The post that went with his intro, solidified why I needed this today. Check this episode out a few times as the more I spoke, the more things I started connected to it and people that provided some of those great connections!!  I found some awesome reflections here with this one and I hope it helps you reflect and make some deep-rooted connections to what you need to do in your life. I found a couple of posts that gave me this idea to put these two powerful things together.  First from Dear Self (@Dearme2_) where it was shared that “Consistency looks like nothing is happening, until everything changes. Awesome piece to hold onto and to keep being consistent every day we can. The second piece came from Psyche Wizard (@PsycheWizard), who I have connected with many times before and today's message was this:  “Discipline will carry you to places motivation can't.” These two connections to our success are there for us to connect to and make a part of our own success formula!  Make them your own!! Keep at it! Don't give up! Don't give into the crud happening in the world today!!  Oh… sorry… those things were directed at me. You can learn every model, framework, or productivity hack out there, but if your mindset doesn't shift underneath, the behavior won't stick. I share real-world examples - from health goals to communication breakdowns, delegation struggles, and presentation nerves - to show the difference between a quick fix and true transformation. We'll also talk about the root causes that drive behavior, how limiting beliefs hold us back, and how pairing skillset with mindset unlocks lasting growth. Skills are the tools. Mindset is the fuel. Scottish poet and writer Jenny Lindsay's artistic career was derailed when she spoke out against the violent tactics used by gender identity activists. Today, Jenny is the author of "Hounded: Women, Harms and the Gender Wars," and her story illustrates what she calls the "secondary harms" of gender ideology - the ripple effects that occur when competent voices are silenced through systematic harassment campaigns. We explore how Jenny went from being "one of Scotland's leading performance poets" to being completely ostracized from the Scottish arts scene, not for discussing gender issues directly, but simply for defending women's right to meet and discuss proposed legal changes. Her experience reveals the parasitic nature of this ideology as it hollows out liberal institutions from within.Jenny breaks down what she identifies as the three core beliefs that get women labeled as "TERFs": that women are a materially definable category, that we have rights based on this reality, and that we deserve freedom of speech on matters affecting us. We discuss the psychological tactics of this movement, the economic warfare against dissenting voices, and why competent women across fields are being systematically targeted. This conversation examines not just what we're losing when reality becomes negotiable, but what happens to a society that rewards ideological conformity over truth-telling and competence.Jenny Lindsay is a writer, poet and essayist based in Scotland. She has a weekly column in The Scotsman and writes for numerous publications including The Spectator, The Daily Mail, and The Times. Her debut book Hounded: Women, Harms and the Gender Wars was published to great acclaim by Polity in 2024, being described as 'one of the most important political books ever to have been written about Scottish culture and politics,' by The Herald, and 'one of the definitive chronicles of these times,' by author JK Rowling. A former poetry performer and live literature programmer, she gained several accolades in the arts prior to her own 'hounding' over gender identity issues in Scotland, including a John Byrne award for Critical Thinking for her film-poem The Imagined We in early 2020, and a Creative Edinburgh Award for Leadership in 2017.Get Jenny's book on AmazonFollow on X @msjlindsay Read Jenny's Substack, The Schism Ring00:00 Core Beliefs and the Hounding Phenomenon06:49 The Existential Question of Gender Identity12:53 Understanding Core Beliefs and Their Implications18:07 The Parasitic Nature of Ideologies24:44 The Sociopathic Dynamics of Hounding32:44 The High Road vs. The Low Road41:33 The Personal Toll of Ideological Conflicts45:54 The Edinburgh Arts Scene and Its Challenges52:56 Cultural and Economic Impacts of Activism01:01:24 The Intersection of Gender and Racial Dialogues01:09:20 Hope Amidst Ongoing Struggles01:19:28 Navigating the Future of DiscourseROGD REPAIR Course + Community gives concerned parents instant access to over 120 lessons providing the psychological insights and communication tools you need to get through to your kid. Send us a textEmotional triggers—or as we've come to reframe them, "emotional traps"—are those experiences that send us spiraling into strong reactions that we sometimes regret. We're diving deep into understanding these patterns and how to respond more effectively when they arise. The term "triggered" has become diluted in everyday language. Originally a clinical term associated with PTSD, it's now used casually in ways that sometimes diminish genuine trauma responses. This doesn't mean our emotional reactions aren't valid—they absolutely are—but framing them as "traps" helps distinguish everyday emotional responses while still honoring their significance. What makes these emotional traps particularly challenging is that we often set them ourselves. Maybe you become reactive when important conversations are avoided or when action plans aren't followed through. Perhaps you spiral when situations make you feel that you're "not enough"—that fundamental human fear that drives so much of our behavior. During midlife, particularly through perimenopause, these physical and emotional factors can be amplified, creating what feels like a constant state of emotional volatility. The ultimate goal isn't to eliminate emotional traps entirely—that's not possible as humans. It's to develop awareness of our patterns and prepare thoughtful responses instead of knee-jerk reactions. Join us as we explore this daily work of emotional regulation that builds resilience and ultimately leads to more fulfilling relationships throughout midlife and beyond. Please be sure to checkout our website for previous episodes, our psych-approved resource page, and connect with us on social media!
