Phil Smith began in the awesome Vancouver punk band Wasted Lives, whose few recordings were recently released by Supreme Echo. This conversation was recorded on December 18 2024. He went on to musical projects like Snow Geese, Blanche Whitman, Bud Luxford and the long-running band Corsage. Venues Visited: Starvin' Marvin's was a nightclub on Burrard and Broadway which closed in the late 1970s. Quintessence Records (later Zulu) opened at 1869 west 4th avenue and often had in-store performances. It moved to 1972 w 4th where it still exists today. The Indian Center was built as a church (initially the Kitsilano Presbyterian Church) in 1911, and eventually became the Vancouver Indian Centre (now the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Society) at this location (1855 Vine) from 1970 to 1979. Now called Devon Court, the building contains luxury condos.  The Subhumans played there in June and July 1978, and the hall had at least 2 additional shows. The Russian Community Hall on 4th and Arbutus has had events over the decades, but most famously was The Afterthought, where psych and hippie shows happened in the '60s before the Retinal Circus opened.  Rohan's opened at a record store at 2865 West 4th Ave (it was an old house!), and then relocated to 2723 west 4th as the venue, Rohan's Rockpile, in 1972 or 1973. According to BC Business Online The Who came to play after an arena show. The Legion Hall at 2611 west 4th avenue was known at Lion's Gate Hall, and was legion #79. There is an ad from 1963 listing it for rent for events. Bands mentioned: Alan Horowitz Band, Heart, Dishrags, Subhumans, Jonathan Richman, DOA, Modernettes, Iggy Pop, Ramones, Talking Heads, Helium, Actionauts, Pointed Sticks, U-J3RK5, Steely Dan. Other venues discussed: Luv-a-fair, Sub Ballroom, the Plaza (punk house), the Snake Pit, Viking Hall, Nat Bailey Stadium. This episode features the following music: Wasted Lives: Wirehead from s/t EP 1979 (reissued by Supreme Echo). Corsage: Royal Couple from CORSAGE (originally released on cassette 1988)  Corsage: September Song from Ancient Songs (2023)

Halloween isn't just about collecting candy and cringy Wednesday costumes. Music plays a big part of the spooky season.   Whether it's awesome horror film soundtracks or horror related guitar rock n roll, music provides the perfect atmosphere sounds for your October. But over the years we've noticed some people's idea of "Halloween" music doesn't quite cut a drunken teenager at Summer camp. So this week we compiled some songs that are debatable and we our "Yay" or "Nay".   In our "News, Views and Tunes", we're off and running with our annual October Horror Movie Challenge and address the Taylor Swift charity guitar incident. Musically, we crank some Municipal Waste, Hallows Eve, Piledriver, Slasher Dave, Subhumans, Messer Chups and introduce Pythonic in our "Indie Spotlight".   Horns Up and Happy Halloween!!

Jade Blade was the lead vocalist and guitar player for legendary Vancouver  punk band The Dishrags. The band played the first punk show in Vancouver on July 30, 1977. This conversation took place on August 25, 2024. Venues visited: The Japanese Hall on the 400 block of Alexander Street is still the Vancouver Japanese Language School, a cultural centre. The building is from 1928.  It hosted the first punk show in Vancouver and very occasionally hosts a music show. O'Hara's was a bar which hosted punk shows in 1979, at the north end of Main street, past Alexander. It was part of the pier built by the Canadian National Railway in 1931 for their steamships. It was demolished in 1984. Gambado's was an underground art gallery at 55 Powell which had shows in 1979. 310 Water Street housed a warehouse where the Dishrags played in 1978. The Smilin' Buddha Cabaret at 109 East Hastings Street began live as a cabaret in the 1950s. It evolved into Vancouver's iconic punk music venue in the late '70s and early 80s. It was a diy venue under the name SBC from 2013 to 2019, when it re-opened as Buddha's. It was the site of a fire in 2023 and is now closed. The Windmill at 1047 Granville St was a bar which became a punk hangout and venue in 1978/1979. According to Public Enemeny zine, by March 1979 Windmill shut its doors to new wave “due to the destructive tendencies of the patrons.” The Quadra Club at 1055 Homer  later became Club Soda and then the Starfish Room. It was a lesbian bar and had punk and new wave shows. It was demolished in the early 2000s. Bands discussed: The Furies, The Dils, The Avengers, DOA, The Clash, The Ramones, The Subhumans, the K-Tels, Bo Diddley, the Pointed Sticks. All of The Dishrags' music is now available through Supreme Echo.  Four, an album of remastered later material, was released in 2024. Music excerpts used with artist permission: I Don't Love You (Three, Supreme Echo 2014) Tormented (Three, Supreme Echo 2014)

Inspired by the energy, the soul and the message of classic ska, The Slackers have truly become legends themselves over the past 33 years.  They first came together in New York City back in the early '90s, and studied at the feet of the masters, including members of Jamaican ska originators the Skatalites, who had relocated to the States.  The Slackers rose to prominence alongside a wave of ska-oriented artists who came to fame in that decade, in what became known as "Third Wave Ska".  However, long after Third Wave hitmakers like The Mighty Mighty Bosstones had sort of faded away, The Slackers remained true to their roots, and have continued to craft vibrant, original and important music for the past 33 years and counting.  Lead singer/ lyricist/ multi-instrumentalist Vic Ruggiero and sax player David Hillyard have been doing this a long time. So, it's remarkable how much freshness and sense of purpose they perpetually bring to everything they do.    The band's now legendary series of livestream concerts from New York during the early days of the pandemic are a great example of how they continue to lead the musical charge with imagination, originality and a sense of community. That run of livestreams eventually led to the Billboard chart-topping album Don't Let the Sunlight Fool Ya, along with a series of reissues of their past discography via Pirates Press Records – also home to punk and ska luminaries like Rancid, the Aggrolites, and Subhumans.  Long after the days of those global livestreams, The Slackers continue to connect globally with fans across the world. Alberta is a shining example of this. The band is very well-loved here, and both Vic and David have plugged into the scene here for music projects of their own, performing and/or recording with Albertan luminaries like Jory Kinjo and Audrey Ochoa. But there hadn't been a proper Slackers tour through Alberta in seven years! At least, not until June of 2024, when they played sold-out shows in Edmonton and Calgary- which represented the last of the tour dates they had to postpone back in 2020.    Befor playing those shows though, they kicked off their Alberta tour with a stop at CKUA studios for this epiosde of Hidden Track Stories!  They shared an insightful, fun, heartfelt conversation about their roots, their latest record, and what drives them to create meaningful music about... stuff.  The Hidden Track Podcast is made possible by the generosity of our donour community. Welcome to this special edition of Retrosonic Podcast where we talk to the legendary music photographer Paul Slattery about some of the recent books and records to use some of his iconic pictures. There's Johnny Marr's new book "Marr's Guitars" and Paul pays tribute to The Smiths' bassist Andy Rourke who sadly passed away recently. There's news of Paul's recent meeting with Mona Soyoc from KaS Product in France and their new compilation album. Penetration and Invisible Girls frontwoman Pauline Murray has included some of Paul's photos in her promising forthcoming autobiography "Life's A Gamble". Then there's the comprehensive Subhumans book "Silence Is No Reaction" by Ian Glasper. The shortlived but influential band Empire featuring Bob Derwood Andrews and Mark Laff of Generation X used Paul's pics for their "Expensive Sound" album which was a favourite of Johnny Marr and John Squire and was an inspiration on Fugazi and the Washington DC Hardcore scene. Damaged Goods Records will reissue Thee Headcoats' classic album "Heavens To Murgatroyd" with new cover photography by Paul. Then we discuss the upcoming Joy Division walking tour and talk in Stockport which coincodes with Paul's book "Joy Division at Strawberry Studios". Paul also picks his favourite Joy Division track which also happens to feature on the most expensive record in his collection. Then Paul discusses his love of the German Electronic and New Wave 'Neue Deutsche Welle' scene and looks back on a special night in Blois in France with The Flamin' Groovies and local Pub Rock heroes Sharpers. Brandon and Jesse Rock were kind enough to trek down to K.C. from St. Joe so we could (of course) talk a little bit about some of their favorite records, but also so that we could cover what is currently their lives, Sk8bar.What is Sk8bar, you say?Well, I'm glad you asked. It's a skateboard shop, a bar, and a live music venue at 501 Francis Street in St. Joseph, Missouri. You can find their Facebook page here, their Instagram here, or you can give them a holler after 5 p.m., Tuesday-Sunday at 816-609-0507.Please check them out, give them a follow, keep an eye on their live-show calendar, and put it on your own calendar to go see a gig at their joint. Here are Jesse's selections:Little Wheel Spin and Spin (1966), Buffy Saint-MarieTownes Van Zandt, self-titled (1969)The Day the Country Died (1983), SubhumansBabes in Toyland's Fontanelle (1992)And here are Brandon's:VI (1987), Circle JerksSub Society's No Legs to Stand On (1989)13 Songs (1989), FugaziType O Negative's Dead Again (2007)I really enjoyed meeting these two and talking music with them, but there are a few notes about this interview that seem pertinent enough to make. For starters, the sound on their end isn't amazing. My setup is geared for one-on-one interviews, so I had to figure out where to seat two guests, and keep my fingers crossed that their shared mic would be sufficient, which it darn near wasn't. So, I apologize if you have to strain to hear them. The second piece is that we kind of found a window in which to sit and chat late in the game, so my prep for the conversation was not up to par. And perhaps as a result of feeling frazzled about pulling things off, I fumbled during Jesse's list and essentially skipped over her Subhumans record almost entirely. My apologies to both Jesse and Subhumans for that.Nevertheless, a good conversation between a still-somewhat-novice podcast host and a pair of badass-but-soft-spoken business/life partners. What they're doing is rad and I'm grateful they stopped by.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to either the promo or the intro/outro audio. They are from a track called, "Equinox" by Liquid Soul off of their self-titled 1996 debut (c/o Music from Mars), and from, "You're the Kind of Girl" by Lee Fields & The Expressions from 2012's Faithful Man (c/o Truth & Soul Records), respectively.

The current obession with Drag Queens is no exception. This is a thinly veiled attempt to outlaw gender expressions that do not fall within the cisheteronormative guidelines. As the year comes to a close, it's time to talk doomsday forecasts, my babies, and no one grips us with grim quite like Nostradamus. Liar Rep.-elect George Santos was less chatty on Tuesday — when The Post spotted the 34-year-old Republican moving luggage, shopping bags, and a pair of dogs into his sister's apartment in Elmhurst just a day after he copped to fibbing about most of his resume during his successful House campaign. A visiting Harvard professor revealed to podcast host Joe Rogan the “heart-wrenching” and “subhuman” origins of nearly every lithium battery-powered tech device produced from Chinese-controlled cobalt slave mines in the Congo.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jenny Nono spoke with Dick Lucas of Subhumans here in Los Angeles after their show at Teragram Ballroom while supporting their new record “Crisis Point.” Subhumans are one of the most influential bands from the UK Anarcho-Punk scene of the 80's, filed right alongside Crass and Conflict, and just as relevant today as they were during the darkest days of Thatcher's Britain. Take your choice in how to label them – Punk, UK82, Crusty, etc, – there lies the attraction and consequent reason for their popularity, the band epitomizes non-conformity and connects with people in many different scenes. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dublab-inconversation/support

As we reckon with an ongoing global crisis, the systems that shape our world are becoming increasingly fragile. With this comes a heightened awareness that many of these systems were designed to detract from our human experiences rather than enhance them. How does our unconscious submission to these systems weaken our human potential? And how can we ensure that our systems serve us, not the other way around? Here to help us delve into these deep questions is multimedia artist, speaker, educator, and author, Michaell Magrutsche. Born in Vienna, Austria, and based out of California, Michaell works to raise awareness about our limitless human potential. He believes that the root source of our current disconnect is the misunderstanding between who we are and our dysfunctional interaction with the systems we have created. He also believes that we possess a number of superpowers that allow us to reconnect with our inherent worth, one of which is art.Today, we discuss the potential and functions of art and how little we really understand about this remarkable human tool. We have a candid conversation about neurodiversity, Michaell's personal experience with dysgraphia, and how he uses art to tap into his innate wisdom. We also touch on the power of inclusivity, the importance of reconnecting with our bodies, and so much more. To learn more about rediscovering your human worth and your inherent superpowers, make sure to tune in today! What you'll learn about in this episode:What Michael means by ‘created systems' and why he says that humanity is his true north. Why Michaell struggled to fit into these systems due to his neurodiversity. The value of art as the highest form of creation. An understanding of how our systems make us subhuman. How our unconscious submission to systems weakens our human potential. Why Michaell believes that we need to ‘re-dream' the American dream. How systemic division distracts us from the power of inclusivity.Michael's belief that art allows us to experience the power of humanity. Why it's important to reconnect with your body; less thinking, more feeling!A look at some of the things that inspire Michaell to create art.The value of creativity for creativity's sake, not economic reward. How you can rediscover your human worth and inherent knowledge.Transcript: HereAdditional Resources:Website: michaellm.comLinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/michaellartTwitter: twitter.com/michaellartInstagram: instagram.com/michaellartBooks: amazon.com/Michaell-Magrutsche/e/B01JGZIRW2/Sharon Spano:Website: sharonspano.comFacebook: facebook.com/SharonSpanoPHDInstagram: instagram.com/drsharonspano/LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/sharonspano/Book: thetimemoneybook.comContact: sharon@sharonspano.comTwitter: twitter.com/SharonSpanoThe Other Side of Potential Podcast: sharonspano.com/podcast/12-Week Toxic Relationship 1:1 Intensive: sharonspanoworkshops.com/intensive

Patrick O'Neil is a prolific author and talented writer whose work has appeared in numerous publications: Juxtapoz, Salon, The Fix, Decibel and Razorcake. A former heroin addict who lead a bank-robbing ring, he cleaned up, started writing in jail and eventually got an MFA in creative writing. This lead to his memoirs “Gun, Needle, Spoon” and “Hold Up”. He's also an infamous punk legend who spent the 1980's working behind the scenes as a roadie and tour manager for several famous bands. His latest memoir is out now on Punk Hostage Press. “Anarchy At The Circle K: On The Road With The Dead Kennedys, TSOL, Flipper, Subhumans and...Heroin” has a title that's self explanatory and the book's a terrific read. In this episode, Patrick and hostess Pleasant Gehman compare notes on the early 1980's California punk scene and swap insane cross-country touring stories. Patrick's experienced everything getting kicked off the Lollapalooza tour and stranded at truck stops in Wyoming or lots at Dead Kennedys concerts to drug deals gone wrong and more. You'll also hear a few tales from his bank robbing days before he was busted by the feds, got sober in prison and turned his life around.
