Stephanie Melgozza was a 24 year old woman from Illinois that killed 2 innocent pedestrians, Paul Prowant, 55, and his girlfriend, 43-year-old Andrea Rosewicz. When police got to the scene both Andrea and Paul were declared as deceased on the scene even after many attempts of CPR. When police spoke with Stephanie about the crash, she was clearly very intoxicated, slurring her words and laughing the entire time during her field sobriety tests. Stephanie was made aware multiple times that she had hit and murdered 2 people but refuses to listen to police and instead keeps insisting that she didn't. Stephanie was taken to the station when things would only get more concerning when she continues to talk to officers about her girls trip in Vegas coming up and when she can get her car back for school, still oblivious to the severity of the situation. This week we’re joined by Mary Frances Phillips, a scholar-activist, public intellectual, and Associate Professor of African American Studies at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Her interdisciplinary research agenda focuses on race and gender in post-1945 social movements and the carceral state. Her scholarly interests include the Modern Black Freedom Struggle, Black Feminism, and Black Power Studies. Her first book Black Panther Woman chronicles the life and spiritual practices of Ericka Huggins, a founding member of the Black Panther Party and the first woman to hold a leadership role within the movement. Unpacking her unlawful arrest, latent queerness, and journey from resistance warrior to revolutionary; Dr. Phillips helps close the gap on how some of the movement philosophy of the past has made its way into the current day. A St. Paul woman is facing federal charges after allegedly assaulting a FBI agent during last week's search of a Minneapolis restaurant. In a criminal complaint, prosecutors allege the woman was recorded on video trying to punch an FBI SWAT officer as others in the crowd tried to stop her. She then allegedly kicked the agent before breaking free of the crowd and pushing another FBI agent.The state's response to protests following the murder of George Floyd five years ago was a point of contention in a congressional hearing Tuesday. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth testified before a House panel. Minnesota DFL Rep. Betty McCollum questioned sending the military to quell protests in Los Angeles. Hegseth responded by criticizing Minnesota's handling of those protests. He said the current deployment in California is needed so federal immigration agents can conduct their operations.Gov. Tim Walz says the Legislature showed they could work together despite being closely and deeply divided. After a regular session that featured a three-week holdout by Democrats in the House, two Senators facing criminal charges, special elections, a nearly even Republican-Democrat divide and adjournment without agreement, lawmakers came back to St. Paul and finished their work early Tuesday in a special session. Stephanie Melgozza was a 24 year old woman from Illinois that killed 2 innocent pedestrians, Paul Prowant, 55, and his girlfriend, 43-year-old Andrea Rosewicz. When police got to the scene both Andrea and Paul were declared as deceased on the scene even after many attempts of CPR. When police spoke with Stephanie about the crash, she was clearly very intoxicated, slurring her words and laughing the entire time during her field sobriety tests. Stephanie was made aware multiple times that she had hit and murdered 2 people but refuses to listen to police and instead keeps insisting that she didn't. Stephanie was taken to the station when things would only get more concerning when she continues to talk to officers about her girls trip in Vegas coming up and when she can get her car back for school, still oblivious to the severity of the situation. On July 26th, 1979, the front page of the long-defunct Oregon Journal had coverlines “Playboy's perfect ‘playmate'”, “taxpayers missing the boat” and “Democrats back Carter gas plan”. Just beneath those, the main headline read “Woman, 20, strangled in bed here”. Paired with a photo of a young woman's face adorned with a now heartbreaking smile. Her name, was Anna Marie Hlavka. Sadiqa, my guest's mother, was fifteen years old when she became a mother for the first time as part of an arranged marriage in Baghdad, Iraq in 1955. She was a wonderful mother but Sairan thought a bit too cautious which is very common for a teenager to think. Having a more conservative husband, Sadiqa loved all of her children equally and would often do anything for them. She was more lenient that her husband. My guest was one of seven children, safely nestled in the middle of the large group of children.With no formal education, she never did any professional training, she was beautiful, had a wonderful sense of humor and did everything for her children as her husband travelled frequently for business. In Sairan's mind, her mother "had seven PHD's because she raised seven wonderful children, each one unique.Unfortunately, Sadiqua died unexpectedly at fifty-eight years old and Sairan wasn't able to introduce her first child to her mother in person.Sairan is a Business Strategist and Engineer but she also is helping people unpack their hidden gem. Often, we think we are happy-working, taking care of the family, seeing friends, etc. But, Sairan, who was born in Bagdad and now an Iraqi American citizen, learned many life lessons at 26 years old  when she came to the United States with her big American dreams. Today, she's a mom, entrepreneur and very successful engineer, but she's come to appreciate the belif of making and impact in the workd and that obstacles can be overcome. "Voices of Truth" is a compilation of engaging speakers sharing their stories of impact. Sairan is on the the contributing authors.As one can expect, being so far away from family, at such a young age, had it's challenges and heartbreak. And it was such an honor to hear Sairan share stories of her mother.
