This week, the guys dive into the most unhinged encounters between humans and the animal kingdom — from a man swallowed whole by a shark, to a monkey tossing a baby off a rooftop, to a python launching out of a toilet and sinking its fangs into someone's junk. We're talking chimp attacks, stingray stabbings, killer crocs, and even a hawk vs. snake midair brawl — it's horrifying, it's ridiculous, and yes, somehow still hilarious. Also in the mix: Carlos defends arepas against the mighty American burger
Ben got hit by a bird while jogging, Josh in Group Therapy wants bro time free of guilt from his girlfriend...who has no friends. Also, is that a red flag? And TBT has LOTS of crazy turns!
In March 1980, after 120 years of dormancy, the volcano Mount St. Helens in Washington State begins showing signs of life. Scientists warn that a major eruption is coming, but they're unable to completely block off access to the mountain. Some locals, like lodge owner Harry Truman, refuse to leave. And on May 18, when the volcano finally explodes, 150 people are caught in the deadly path of destruction. It's March 10, 1979—24 days since their sailboat sank and 15 days since Elmo and Randy arrived at a remote cabin, trapped, powerless to save Cindy and Jena, and consumed by guilt and grief. Once they regain their strength and the snow begins to melt, they discover an old skiff on the beach. At last, Elmo and Randy set out to find the girls, and their way to safety.Pre-order your copy of the new Against the Odds book, How to Survive Against the Odds: Tales & Tips for Animal Attacks and Natural Disasters, for stories of everyday people confronted by life-or-death situations, showing you how they survived—and how you can too.Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more! We have made no secret that we do not take the Oscars seriously. Like everybody else, we enjoy making predictions and second guessing the winners, but we also know they are a joke. We had no idea just how far that joke went. This week, the Academy made a shocking change that was impossible for us to ignore. We also talk about the recent cast announcements for the Ready or Not sequel. For as long as people have shared scary stories, trauma has been a part of them. There is nothing more terrifying than real life horrors, after all. The Killgrin is an addition to mental health horror that follows a woman who is trying to cope with a horrible tragedy. After visiting a spiritual healer, she learns she is being followed by an entity that feeds on misery. It is not the most original premise, but it is one that can work if done correctly. And The Killgrin does do a lot right. There are some gnarly kills, cool creature design, and some decent characters. But a confusing ending and strange decisions negatively impact the film. But is it really fair to call it Temu Smile?Folk horror has followed an interesting trajectory. What began as stories about people dealing with strange rituals and mysterious happenings has somehow become more about atmosphere and less about characters. Frewaka is something of a throwback. It may be vague and creepy, but it always goes back to its protagonists. There is a lot to unpack in what is a very straightforward story. Frewaka is an atmospheric film filled with powerful imagery that interweaves slice of life moments. The setting and look of the film are perfect and the fact that most of it is spoken in Irish further immerses the audience. Blake also talks about the most important quality to make a good folk horror movie. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Elmo and his son Randy leave the girls behind, paddling ahead in their Sport-Yak to find help—but trouble continues to follow. Though they eventually reach the cabin, the CB radio doesn't work, and as their frostbitten feet thaw, they can barely stand. Helpless, they spend days struggling to recover while miles away, Cindy and Jena remain alone on the freezing beach, without food or fire.Pre-order your copy of the new Against the Odds book, How to Survive Against the Odds: Tales & Tips for Animal Attacks and Natural Disasters, for stories of everyday people confronted by life-or-death situations, showing you how they survived—and how you can too.Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more! Welcome to the movie that created a “turducken” out of a cat and forced a once-thriving horror podcast to its knees. That's right, we're digging into schlockmeister Greyson Clark's 1988 flopsterpiece, UNINVITED!! Our guest on this pleasure cruise without the pleasure describes this film as “84 minutes of bliss,” Oli Hamilton. Why, you may ask, did I expose my only child to this film? It's because I love him so much. Along the way, we experiment with mutant cat physiology, explore bikini adornments, meet the Kuato doctors, turn on the bubbly death, and try to get a handle on Clu Gulagar's borrowed teeth! All this, plus ponder the meaning of “1000x normal” blood, consider if this movie inspired one of It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia's most notorious bits, and we lament that the film has precisely zero cat scares! Plus a bloodtastic edition of Choose Your Own Deathventure! Come aboard the last - and least - movie of Animal Attack April with us today!! It's February 13, 1979. Elmo Wortman and his three children are sailing home to Alaska across the frigid North Pacific after a routine orthodontist visit in Canada. But this time, they get caught in a freak storm—80-mile-per-hour winds and towering 20-foot swells rip their homemade sailboat apart, leaving them stranded on a remote island in the dead of winter. We delve into the region's finest lodges, renowned for offering exceptional fishing opportunities for pike, grayling, and other intriguing species. Alyx brings her wealth of experience from traveling with the New Fly Fisher, revealing invaluable tips for catching grayling, including the art of skittering and the importance of minding your backcast. Whether you're a seasoned angler or a curious beginner, this conversation with Alyx Parks is sure to inspire your next trip to the breathtaking landscapes of Saskatchewan. Don't miss out—tune in and let Alyx guide you through a fly fishing paradise. Episode Chapters with Alyx Parks on Fly Fishing Saskatchewan. 8:38 - Alyx shares the story of how she became a host on The New Fly Fisher. The journey began unexpectedly when her father, Jeff Parks, also a host on the show, invited her to join a filming trip to Scott Lake Lodge in Northern Saskatchewan. That's when she delivered a memorable segment where she coined the phrase "hot little bug," which resonated with viewers. 15:54 - We get into her fishing trip in Saskatchewan, Canada. She recounts experiences at the Cree River Lodge and Scott Lake Lodge, highlighting their incredible guides and the excellent pike fishing opportunities. 23:02 - Alyx shares her first experience fishing for Arctic grayling at Cree, accompanied by Jenna McKeown, Colin McKeown's daughter and a seasoned fisher. Alyx was amazed by the grayling's power and agility, and she described it as a uniquely thrilling experience. 32:28 - Alyx tells us about Scott Lake Lodge. She describes it as a "bucket list" destination, noting that many visitors save for years to experience it. The lodge offers a range of fishing opportunities, with pike and lake trout being the main species, but also includes grayling and walleye. She also shares personal fishing experiences, including catching large pike with her father. 39:28 - She shares her experience filming a segment about pike fishing, emphasizing the importance of keeping the fly in the water and maintaining movement to attract pike. She recounted a memorable moment where a 47-inch pike nearly hit her co-host Jenna, capturing the excitement and unpredictability of fishing. 52:57 - Alyx shares her memorable experience fishing on the Bow River with Nick Schlachter of Wapiti Sports & Outfitters. She also recounts an encounter with grizzly bears in the area, including a notable bear known as "the boss," emphasizing the wildlife presence in the region. 56:32 - She mentions an episode where her father traveled to Northern Manitoba to explore the famed Gods River for big brook trout. 58:07 - Alyx gives valuable tips for going on a fishing trip to Northern Canada. She recommends bringing stuff such as fleece, puffer jacket, wading jacket, and wet bag. 1:01:09 - We get into podcasts. Alyx prefers podcasts over music, finding them less distracting and more engaging. She likes true crime podcasts and recommends one with the title "Tooth & Claw: True Stories of Animal Attacks," which is hosted by a bear biologist and his friends. 1:03:24 - We get into hockey and golf. Alyx shares her renewed interest in golf, noting the similarities between golf and fly fishing. Her father, a former exceptional golfer turned fly fishing guide, often uses golf analogies when teaching clients. He helps clients improve their casting skills by comparing them to lowering a golf handicap, making the learning process relatable and enjoyable. 1:08:22 - Alyx discusses a significant injury that kept her from fishing for two years and shares insights for people dealing with similar struggles. She emphasizes the importance of visualization in fishing, suggesting that imagining each step of the process—from positioning oneself to presenting the fly—can improve one's fishing skills. I talk with wildlife biologist and the co-host of my favorite podcast, Tooth & Claw, about what happens when animals attack people, and why it makes for such a good story. The second episode in my series of episodes on how science and scientific concepts intersect with our lives.
Finally, an animal attack movie where you've never been more on the animal's side! That's right, we're dipping our flippers into frigid waters as we talk about 1977's Jaws-ripoff meets John Wick revenge thriller, ORCA!! Here to help us navigate these dangerous waters is podcast host (Jordan, Jesse, Go! and Free With Ads), writer (Youth Group and Bubble), and Returning Champion - Jordan Morris!! All this, plus we debate how many X-Man powers this whale has, fan cast Charlotte Rampling as GI-Joe characters, and play a chew-heavy edition of Choose Your Own Deathventure!! Along the way, we talk variable-sized tentacles, debate the Steven Sommers formula, campaign for more goop in movies, enjoy the sloppy skeleton hugs, consider Die Hard wieners, worship at the alter of Famke Janssen, and recount how the film's box office fortunes were sunk by James Cameron's TITANIC!!
