The third and final installment of a 3-part episode with the lovely Lane Gardner - Arts Educator, Singer/Songwriter, and President and Founder of THREAD Lane's work is an emerging voice in a world where innovative solutions to our rising mental health crisis are desperately needed. An award-winning arts educator, singer/songwriter, and non-profit entrepreneur, Lane uses the power of music and creativity to facilitate healing and growth in individuals and communities suffering from trauma. For nearly three decades, Lane has devoted her life's work to helping herself and others learn how to transform their personal experiences of trauma into powerful works of art. Her passion for the human journey and cultivating connection through our shared experiences led her to develop a therapeutic and collaborative songwriting program that merges creativity, self-expression, healing, and community. She went on to study classical voice and musical theater at both Baldwin-Wallace College and Cincinnati Conservatory of Music (CCM). As a professional singer/actor, she starred in leading roles, including Eliza in My Fair Lady at Lyric Opera Cleveland, Laura in The Glass Menagerie at Seaside Music Theater, and the title role in Antigone at The WestEnd Theater in NYC. Between her performances, she taught after-school arts programs, offered private voice and piano lessons, and started developing programming and workshops to help others feel better about themselves and their journeys through their experiences in the arts. Now, instead of finding solace on the stage and in other people's stories, she began to delve into her own stories, taking up songwriting with a fury. Transforming her past into powerful works of art was a catalyst for healing and the marriage of her many gifts and talents. She released her debut album entitled Fertile Ground in 2015 on her own record label, Third Road Records. Lane now devotes her passion and work to helping those who suffer from trauma through her therapeutic arts non-profit organization, THREAD. THREAD is a 501(c)(3) therapeutic arts non-profit organization that serves the needs of survivors of abuse, those struggling with addiction and mental health, cancer survivors, incarcerated men and women, veterans, and those impacted by inequality and discrimination surrounding gender, race, sexuality, and religion. About HR Like a Boss In late 2018, John began working on a presentation centered around the key concept that the best human resources professionals he knows have a unique understanding of the financial and business side of their organizations. In fact, some of the best are business people first and human resources professionals second. After delivering the fourth presentation to a local SHRM chapter the idea for writing a book was born. And everyone knows the best way to write a book about gaining expertise is to talk to the experts. These chats build the foundation for "HR Like a Boss" the book while providing game-changing advice from those conducting human resources "like a boss." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/willory/message

A little over two years ago, in June 2017, Dr. Kenneth Hoyt did a podcast with us about his work with higher education institutions that needed, or wanted, to change. We had previously worked with Ken when he was president of Centenary University from 2002 to 2009 when he turned around the institution, dramatically increasing enrollment from 1,600 students to 3,300. How did he do this? By better understanding and improving retention rates and expanding into non-traditional, adult, online and graduate programs. It was Ken's mastery of the power of data that enabled him to provide the insights needed to better recruit potential college students while adapting Centenary's curricula to their needs. Are you in need of a turnaround? Listen and learn! It was this same understanding of the power of data that led Dr. Hoyt to found The Higher Education Practice. In our 2nd podcast, we asked him to talk about the work he has been doing with higher education institutions, especially regarding the three-year project he recently completed with the Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities (AIKCU). This podcast is important because Ken discusses how he engaged with these colleges and universities to get them to capture and analyze their data, and then own the results so they could transform their institutions and better serve their students. You can read the analysis of Ken's work, “Optimizing Academic Balance (OAB): Mission, Quality, Market Potential, Cost, and Revenue,” here.  Of particular interest to us at SAMC and the work we do in higher education: Dr. Hoyt looks for the Key Performance Indicators on which a college should be focusing. All too often, institutions are not looking at the right data. They are focused on enrollment and retention but are unaware of how their own data can help them better attract, and retain, students. He successfully got the independent colleges in Kentucky to see the benefit of cross-institutional analysis. As anthropologists, we also look across institutions, and even industries, to better understand which model works best in which setting. He also helps organizations disrupt the myths which they have always held to be true, even when the facts are neither supportive of those myths nor trusted to change them. At one college he worked with, the administration was certain that minority students performed poorly when compared to (white) majority students. The facts said the opposite. The administration also thought that residential students did better than commuters. Wrong again.  SAMC helps organizations "see, feel and think" differently There is so much information, along with exceptional insights, awaiting college leadership that wants to see things with fresh eyes. It really is all around them, if only they could see it. At SAMC, that's what we're all about: helping clients see things through a new lens, with fresh eyes. About Ken Hoyt The founding principal of The Higher Education Practice, Dr. Kenneth L. Hoyt is in the midst of a distinguished 30-year higher education career. He has served as president of Centenary University in Hackettstown, New Jersey, president of The Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges, Inc. (OFIC), vice president for The University of Akron, and in various campaign/fundraising leadership positions for Otterbein College and Baldwin-Wallace College. Dr. Hoyt holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration and Leadership from Ohio University, an M.A. in Journalism/PR from Ohio State University, and a B.A. in Business Administration/ Marketing from Baldwin-Wallace College. During his seven years at Centenary University, he transformed the institution, implementing a collaborative strategic planning model that led to unprecedented enrollment growth in the university's traditional, non-traditional/adult, online and graduate programs. Recently, Centenary was recognized by Intel as one of the top 50 wireless universities in the U.S. for its wireless IBM laptop campus.  To learn more about what's ahead for higher ed, check out these blogs and podcasts  What Makes Arizona State University the Most Innovative College in the US? Amy Husted and Audrey Wallace are the creators of the babysitting exchange platform Komae. As young moms, they established a cooperative to exchange free babysitting services with other parents they knew and trusted. That idea grew into Komae, an app that allows more people to utilize the solution they found for themselves and form communities of trusted caregivers. Husted brings a strategic mind to the company. She is responsible for internal management, social media marketing and content management. Wallace employs visionary thinking to the managing of public relations, networking and sales. Both earned Bachelor of Science degrees in psychology at Baldwin-Wallace College and pursued careers before becoming stay-at-home moms and now successful entrepreneurs. On this episode of the podcast, Husted and Wallace explore the strengths they bring to the table as Millennials, explain how Komae works and share advice for turning an idea into an enterprise.   Key Interview Takeaways Because millennials grew up with the gift of technology, they utilize available resources and innovate to develop creative, simple solutions. Husted and Wallace contend that apps like Airbnb and Komae illustrate efficiency and industriousness in a sharing economy. Parents today spend more time with their kids than they did in the 1960's! As we work to keep children safe and protected, we are more engaged in our kids' lives and the activities they pursue. Komae gives parents guilt-free time to themselves by providing a “village” of trusted caregivers. Set aside time every day to spend thinking about your goal. As first-time entrepreneurs, Husted and Wallace know how overwhelming it can be to realize an idea. Their advice is to take it one day at a time and “move to the next dot.” Soon, the dots begin to connect and the thought becomes a reality. Need funding? Get creative. The founders of Komae began with a successful Kickstarter campaign and then learned about pitch competitions. To date, they have won six such contests in order to finance the development of their company.  Connect with Amy Husted and Audrey Wallace Website: www.mykomae.com Learn more about your ad choices.
