Welcome to The Backyard Naturalists, the show about anything and everything connected with nature. A few weeks ago, Dr. Bill Hilton, Jr. joined Debbie and Laurie to talk about his organization, Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History, located in York, SC. Bill was twice named the South Carolina Science Teacher of the Year and was also honored as the state's outstanding biology teacher, Discover Magazine, named him as one of the 50 Best Brains in Science and one of the top 10 amateur scientists. He was also an active member of the Sierra Club Campaign, which made Congaree Swamp in South Carolina and National Park. The Charlotte Observer named him as a Carolinas Guardian of the Environment because of a project that he participated in to protect the Catawba River. In this week's episode, Bill returns to have a conversation about his project, Operation Ruby Throat, a cross-disciplinary international initiative in which people collaborate to study behavior and distribution of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris). “In Operation Ruby Throat, participants observe the Ruby-throated Hummingbird in their home countries and share information with peers across North and Central America. Data they collect about hummingbird behavior and distribution are submitted to a central clearing house, analyzed, and then disseminated through this Operation Ruby Throat Web site. Participants learn not only about natural history of hummingbirds but reinforce skills in math, writing, geography, foreign language, art, drama, and other disciplines AND gain deeper understanding of the need for environmental cooperation among people of the Americas.” Connect with the Backyard Naturalists on the Web, Facebook and Instagram. Chris & Kelsey discuss rear-window ethics and sing Rihanna a little too much. The Classic Film: Rear Window (1954) "A wheelchair-bound photographer spies on his neighbors from his apartment window and becomes convinced one of them has committed murder” (IMDb.com). We're back to the Hitchcock classics with one of the holy trinity (according to Chris), a suspenseful thriller that asks, "Will she change for him?" The Modern Film: Disturbia (2007) "A teen living under house arrest becomes convinced his neighbor is a serial killer” (IMDb.com). A blatant rip-off of the Rear Window concept (along with three other movies we've covered on the show), Disturbia may not wow, but it's pretty good teen fare at the very least. Read our afterthoughts for this episode at https://twitter.com/PodSematary/status/1315360716027621377 It’s a pod people double feature on Pod Sematary! Chris & Kelsey shed all emotion and join the collective in peace! The Second Adaptation: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) "When strange seeds drift to earth from space, mysterious pods begin to grow and invade San Francisco, California, where they replicate the residents into emotionless automatons one body at a time” (IMDb.com). Less reactionary that it's '56 predecessor and the Jack Finney novel on which it's based, the '78 version's slow boil and creeping terror are exactly as effective as the film's modern-day hype would suggest. The Fourth Adaptation: The Invasion (2007) "As a Washington, D.C. psychiatrist unearths the origin of an alien epidemic, she also discovers her son might be the only way it can be stopped” (IMDb.com). Take the 1978 classic, remove the character building and charm, and add some mildly effective personal tension and mindless action scenes and you'll have this fourth attempt at reinventing the wheel. The Invasion seems like it might be worth watching until it just gives up about halfway through and drowns in its own genericism. Chris & Kelsey creep deeper into the Alien Franchise with what some refer to as the best installment. Chris is not one of those people. The Classic Film: Aliens (1986) “Ellen Ripley is rescued by a deep salvage team after being in hypersleep for 57 years. The moon that the Nostromo visited has been colonized, but contact is lost. This time, colonial marines have impressive firepower, but will that be enough?” (IMDb.com). I mean, come on, it’s Aliens. You know what’s up. The Modern Film: Alien: Covenant (2017) “The crew of a colony ship, bound for a remote planet, discover an uncharted paradise with a threat beyond their imagination and must attempt a harrowing escape” (Twentieth Century Fox). With Prometheus and its place in the Alien timeline winding up a little too bizarre and esoteric for the average Alien fan, it seems Ridley Scott and Fox felt compelled to compromise and bring its sequel closer to general expectations. In doing so, they’ve managed to make a relatively good movie that’s the worst of both worlds. Audio Sources: "Alien: Covenant" produced by Scott Free Productions, et al. #86 Luis Von Ahn I wonder how many of you may know, that the widely popular company known as Duolingo, has it's base right here in Pittsburgh, PA? I sure didn't. After trying many language courses, Rosetta Stone, and even regular CD's you can listen to on your way to work (never happens), I found myself drawn to the free app that is Duolingo. I just happened to be browsing online one day, and noticed from their website, that they are Pittsburgh based! What, what? If you listen to my show, you know I love traveling, and merging my cultural experiences with my beloved hometown of Pittsburgh. Finding out that Duolingo was based here, and that I was addicted to the app, just made my day! I had to find out who was behind this, and get them on the show. Turns out a gentleman by the name of Luis Von Ahn created Duolingo. I reached out, scheduled an interview, and a tour of the office. Wanting to come prepared for the podcast, I started researching Luis, and found myself blown away by what he has accomplished in his 38 years. Luis is the inventor of the CAPTCHA. You all know what that is, the box at the bottom of almost any screen, with fuzzy words, that let's you prove you are not a robot. Along with that, he created reCAPTCHA, and ESP game, and now Duolingo, among various other notable projects. Luis has been named one of the 50 Best Brains in Science by Discover, voted in Silicon's 50 Most Influential People in Technology, and has been recognized as a Brilliant 10 by Popular Science. His credits are almost too long to list, and I cannot wait to see what he does next. To be honest, once I started researching Luis, I was extremely nervous to chat with him. The man is, in fact, a genius, and I suddenly found I wasn't very sure of myself. It turns out, that I did not have to worry at all, and was pleasantly surprised to find him funny, open, and candid. I truly enjoyed my time spent chatting with him about the origins of Duolingo, and what sent this kid who grew up in Guatemala down his path to success. I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did. Also, a personal note to Luis. I am still available to be a squatter at Duolingo. I could clean the floors, take out trash, bring coffee, you name it. Ha Ha! (I am only partly kidding.) It is probably the coolest work place I have ever seen in my life. You can hear more about my tour with them in the intro of the podcast. If you haven't downloaded Duolingo yet, I HIGHLY suggest it. My husband and I practice it every morning, and we have found our Italian to be so much better. It has an amazing success rate, and more importantly, in our busy schedules, it is FUN. I wake up to the owl every morning :) This episode is sponsored by Levity Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh's best sensory deprivation chamber with a spa like atmosphere. All listeners get $5 off with code "Marta" Luis Von Ahn He humored me in my thought bubble photo wish. Thanks Luis!
On this week's episode of the Revival League Podcast, we chat with writer, performer, and MST3K and RiffTrax legend Bill Corbett! Bill talks about the current slate of RiffTrax live shows (including Samurai Cop, playing tomorrow at theaters everywhere!), as well as how RiffTrax got off the ground. Plus, he chats about getting the job at Best Brains, what it was like to take over as Crow after the departure of Trace Beaulieu, and the development of Brain Guy. Meanwhile, Greg talks at length about a German comedy, but Kate and Ryan doubt such a thing exists. Kate theorizes about what makes a good cover song, and Ryan seems to have a very specific plan in the event he's forced to resort to cannibalism. Plus, James reviews "The Giant Gila Monster." All this and an owl who screams in a human voice, on this week's episode of the Revival League Podcast! So Ryan, Greg and James ventured to Minneapolis to see the MST3K Reunion Show, and man was it a fun weekend! We met and chatted the entire cast of MST3K plus new Text Experiment Jonah Ray, went on field trips to the Blue Sun Soda Company for a livecast “Mini Soda Review,” as well an an excursion to the old HQ of Best Brains, Inc, where the original series was produced. Best part of all was meeting so many fellow MSTies, old friends and new, and reuniting all over again.
