LEAVE THE SPOOKY SIDE OF DEATH BEHIND THIS MONTH AND JOIN US ON A JOURNEY INTO THE ROMANCE, COMEDY, AND BUREAUCRACY OF THE AFTERLIFE. We'll get back to scary things next month, because this month is all about the wholesome possibilities of death stories. Gabe and returning guest Tyler Foster explore a surprisingly prevalent subgenre of romantic comedies concerning the processes of the afterlife. Avoiding movies that focused too much on haunting or possession, we still ended up with a list of seven movies that share a curious number of concepts and tropes in common – Alexander Hall's Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941), Victor Fleming's A Guy Named Joe (1943), Vincente Minnelli's Cabin in the Sky (1943), Ernst Lubitsch's Heaven Can Wait (1943), Powell & Pressburger's A Matter of Life and Death (aka: Stairway to Heaven, 1946), Warren Beatty & Buck Henry's Here Comes Mr. Jordan remake, Heaven Can Wait (not otherwise related to the Lubitsch movie, 1978), and Albert Brooks' Defending Your Life (1991). In the process of breaking these films down, we also talk briefly about Frank Capra's It's a Wonderful Life (1947), Steven Spielberg's A Guy Named Joe remake (Always [1989]), and Paul & Chris Weitz' Here Comes Mr. Jordan remake (Down to Earth [2001]). 00:00 – Intro 7:13 – Here Comes Mr. Jordan 19:36 – A Guy Named Joe 36:01 – Cabin in the Sky 47:12 – Heaven Can Wait (1943) 56:36 – A Matter of Life and Death 1:14:06 – Heaven Can Wait (1978) 1:31:15 – Defending Your Life 1:46:03 – Outro Please consider donating to the following charities/fundraisers if you have any spare cash: Abortion Access Fund, Inc: https://abortionaccessfund.org/ UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East) Gaza Crisis Appeal: https://donate.unrwa.org/gaza/ Lilith Fund (Texas abortion access): https://www.lilithfund.org/ National Center for Transgender Equality: https://transequality.org/

Each episode I travel six feet under and pry open a coffin of one of my favorite Hollywood corpses and perform a post watch examination of one their forgotten films. Just after midnight on May 15, 1970, officers opened fire on a group of unarmed students milling in front of a dorm on the campus of Jackson State College in Jackson, Mississippi, killing two and wounding twelve. Although the shootings took place just a week and a half after the shootings at Kent State University, the Jackson State shootings never got the attention of those at Kent State, and when they did they were often described as a second Kent State, erasing the context of white supremacy and state-based violence that inform what happened in Jackson. Kelly tells the tragic story of the Jackson State shootings and interviews Nancy Bristow, Professor of History at the University of Puget Sound, and author of Steeped in the Blood of Racism: Black Power, Law and Order, and the 1970 Shootings at Jackson State College to find out more. Dr. Gabrielle Metzler joined Program Director Martin Jimenez and Executive Director Jeff Keuss in the spring of 2019 to talk through our Burnout discussion guide. This was our first attempt at a discussion guide companion podcast and was recorded at Alexander Hall where SPU's School of Theology is located.
In this episode, we welcome Dr Alexander Hall, who discusses his research into the popular media representation of science and religion in the 20thcentury. He introduces us to ways of presenting science which became common on television and radio over the second half of the 20th century, which he calls the ‘evolutionary epic' and the ‘humanist blockbuster': grand, sweeping stories about nature and evolution, that takes us from the earliest moments of creation to now, and which in many ways echo religious creation myths. Alex will help us trace the history and development of these ways of presenting science, through influential figures such as David Attenborough, Julian Huxley, and the archetypal work of Jacob Bronowski, to help us understand where this kind of storytelling style comes from, and why it's so common in Science and Nature TV. Alex will also tell us why it's so important to investigate media presentations of Science and Religion if we want to understand the relationship between science and belief in society – and as a bonus he'll also recommend his favourite science and religion TV and radio programmes!

It's one of our most popular episodes) We'll discuss everything from how fraudsters don't need to purchase lists of compromised credit card numbers if they know one simple math equation to advice for online companies of all sizes, especially as the economic downturn continues to make committing fraud more attractive to the everyday consumer. And, we'll share some of the ways both Alexander and Karise help executives understand that the benefits of a proactive fraud prevention strategy far exceed the financial component. Ben Dorks, Chief Executive Officer of Ideagen, commented: I am pleased to report an excellent start to Ideagen's financial year. Our core markets are strong and underpin the demand we have seen this half. We continue to execute our strategy, delivering growth and investing in the business whilst tightly managing the cost base. The Company has continued to make acquisitions which have further enhanced our global reach, customer base and product capability. Cash generation has been good which coupled with further growth in new SaaS recurring revenues and an increase in repeat business from our growing customer base provides a strong platform for the second half. The market opportunity remains large and long term and given the Group's position as a leader in the Governance, Risk and Compliance market, the Board is optimistic about the Group's continued growth prospects." The Board is pleased to report that trading has remained strong in the first half of the financial year (https://www.investegate.co.uk/ideagen-plc--idea-/rns/trading-update/201911130700051857T/) and that revenue and EBITDA are both expected to be significantly ahead of the same period last year and in line with management's expectations. This has been achieved through both organic revenue growth and the acquisitions of Redland Business Solutions Ltd (acquired in June 2019) and Optima Diagnostics Ltd (acquired in Oct 2019). The Company has a clear strategy to grow revenues organically and maintain high EBITDA margins whilst transitioning from a perpetual licence to a SaaS based subscription model. The successful execution of this strategy will provide an even more robust business model and a higher quality of earnings over the medium term without impacting on the short-term profitability of the business. The Board considers that the key growth metric for the Group is based on Annual Recurring Revenue ("ARR"). ARR is the value of the Group's contracted recurring revenue book at any point in time, which will be recognised over the next 12 month period. The Group's ARR has grown by approximately 20 per cent. from £36.4 million on 30 April 2019 to £43.9 million on 31 October 2019. This comprises of acquisition-led growth of £3.8 million combined with organic growth of £3.7 million within the period, representing approximately a 20 per cent. organic growth rate on an annualised basis. Group performance is based on strong customer demand and sales execution in the period and indicates that the transition to a recurring model is progressing successfully and is ahead of schedule. Total organic revenue growth in the period was 7 per cent. which, in the context of an accelerated SaaS transition, represents a strong performance. Recognised Recurring revenue is expected to be approximately 74 per cent. of total revenue and is expected to rise to over 80 per cent. in the next full financial year. The Company continues to compete and win new business within the UK and international markets reflecting the Company's global expansion. During the period, the Company won over 240 new customer logos including Emirates Airline, Emirates Catering, Alexander Hall, Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals, Freightliner, Vietjet Air, Mylan Pharmaceuticals and Royal London. At the period end the group had net debt of £18.2 million (30 April 2019: net debt of £1.3 million) after spending £19.8 million on acquisitions. Operating cash generation in the period remained robust and in line with the Board's expectations.
