We sat down with the brilliant and hilarious Catherine Reitman, the mastermind behind the massive hit series "Workin' Moms." Catherine opened up about her journey from acting to becoming a writer, director, and showrunner, and how her real-life experiences as a working mom inspired the show's raw, hilarious, and often emotional stories. We talked about the challenges of balancing motherhood with a demanding career and how she weaves that authenticity into her writing. Catherine also shared some behind-the-scenes anecdotes from the set, the importance of representing complex, even "unlikable" women on screen, the power of an all-female writer's room, and reflecting on coming from a family of talented filmmakers. It was an honest, insightful, and empowering conversation that working moms–and anyone juggling multiple roles–will relate to deeply. Learn more about your ad choices. When Catherine Reitman first started working on her show Workin' Moms, she never would have imagined she would be where she is today. What started as a small Canadian comedy, has quickly turned into a smashing Netflix success that resonates with a diverse audience. In today's episode, Lindsay Pinchuk releases a conversation she had with Catherine in 2021---before she even knew the concept of this podcast. Lindsay knew that it was a conversation she had to share---even over a year after it took place. While Catherine is the star of her own show, and her real life husband Philip Sternberg, plays her fictional husband, Workin' Moms is not autobiographical. The inspiration behind the show comes from Catherine's desire to normalize the life of working mothers. Through a collection of stories, Catherine has written and produced the show in a way that redefines the meaning of motherhood by showing every truth and accuracy imaginable. Even though motherhood is an important role in a woman's life, it is not her sole identity. After all, all mothers are just human. Tune into this episode of Dear FoundHer… for this conversation with Catherine Reitman. Learn more about the meaning and inspiration behind the show, why it's important to humanize mothers, and what you can expect in the newly released season six of Workin' Moms. Quotes • “I definitely have a perspective that I didn't have a year ago or five years ago. And I do think motherhood and working motherhood has helped me come to that.” (09:43-09:51) • “There was a moment where it was a small Canadian show that I was very proud of. But I sort of believed that it was just an indulgent little show that would only really connect with a handful of women, and would probably stay below the radar. But when it hit Netflix, we could never have predicted the way it would explode.” (24:21-24:46) • “Being recognized is extraordinary. But what really hits, is when someone comes up to you and says, “Thank you. I feel seen, this show hits.” And that's when I realized all of this has meaning.” (25:33-25:52) • “Take a moment, and consider that moms are not just mothers. Prior to that, they were just women and flawed people who were trying to figure out what they were going to do with their lives.” (27:34-27:49) Connect with Catherine Reitman: Instagram | http://www.instagram.com/reitcatou Please don't forget to rate, comment, and subscribe to Dear FoundHer on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts! Catherine Reitman is the creator, executive producer, writer and star (alongside her husband) of the popular Netflix series Workin' Moms, which just released its fourth season. You might have also seen her in shows like "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" and "Blackish." Most importantly, she's also a wife, mom of two and is working full-time during the pandemic. Catherine talks to Hilaria and Daphne about staying sane during quarantine, homeschooling and working with your spouse. She also opens up about her personal experience with postpartum depression, which was the impetus that helped her create the concept of Workin' Moms—as the show is based on her experiences navigating life after childbirth, trying to balance motherhood, her professional career and personal relationships.Favorite ThingsHilaria: Hatch Holly JumperDaphne: Tender Leaf Wooden Toy Espresso MachineCatherine: Olaplex Hair Perfector No 3Email us with your questions at mombrainpod@gmail.com and follow us on Instagram, just search for @MomBrain. Over 4,000 people were asked how comfortable they felt hearing a recording of their own voice and over 40% responded that they didn't like it; almost 50% said they're mostly fine with it, including 23% who said "very comfortable." Workin Moms" is back for season 4, most fans were so pissed they had to wait after the season 3 cliffhanger and star Catherine Reitman joins us to chat about the new season, and defend that cliffhanger! A study asked over 25,000 people to name their favourite color, and how it makes them feel. Dark blue, turquoise, and light pink are the "calmest" colors and the world's favourite color is basically teal, but technically it's called "Marrs Green." Plus, Gabby called in to request the Roz & Mocha original game 'Pinched', so naturally we had to play!
This week on On Story we’ll hear playwright and screenwriter Sofia Alvarez discuss the difference between writing for the stage and screen and the process of adapting Jenny Han’s young adult book series into the Netflix romantic comedy TO ALL THE BOYS I’VE LOVED BEFORE. And later Catherine Reitman discusses creating the International Emmy Award nominated series WORKIN’ MOMS.

For this episode I had the enormous pleasure of chatting with Catherine Reitman, creator and star of the hit CBC show Working Moms, now underway with its third season. Working Moms manages to be hilariously funny while offering an unvarnished version of modern-day motherhood. Catherine and I dig into topics like why no one asks if dads can “have it all,” why we carry so much guilt for pursuing our own dreams and the importance of finding a community of other parents to share the journey.
