There's no denying that pet care is expensive.Pet guardianship should not be only for those with means. The benefits of having pets – both physical and psychological – are well-documented. The problem, though, is that having a pet is expensive and one of the biggest expenses is veterinary care. We catch up with a major Louisville nonprofit on this week's Access Louisville podcast.Tamera Reif, senior director of Housing Services at Volunteers of America Mid-States, is on this week's show to talk about a number of ongoing projects with the organizaiton. She spends her days in the world of residential homeless and housing work — a key issue affecting Louisville in recent years. She talks about how she is inspired to do the work.Volunteers of America Mid-States (VOA) broke ground on its new headquarters, the $58 million Community Care Campus, in September. Reif tells us on the show that one of the most exciting parts of that project is a new family emergency shelter, which will more than double the available space for families experiencing homelessness. The campus also includes transitional housing for 18 to 24 year old youths and respite care for homeless people leaving the hospital. The space will also include meeting rooms and partner spaces, she explains. And she speaks with LBF Editor-in-Chief Shea Van Hoy talks with Reif about how the campus project came together with the support of Louisville Metro Government. The start of construction comes nearly two years after Louisville Metro Government purchased the Smoketown properties on Breckinridge Street near Floyd and Brook streets for nearly $7 million. Existing facilities on the property included the Vu Hotel and Guest House as well as the C2 event space, which George Stinson and his partner Ed Lewis opened in 2016.The majority of the funding for the project is coming from the Kentucky General Assembly and Louisville Metro Government, which are contributing a combined $22.5 million, according to VOA's website. Low income housing credits are responsible for $19 million in funds and the VOA has been able to raise $2.5 million for the project to date. But that still leaves a $17.5 million gap in funding. The new campus is expected to fully completed in 2027 and will employ 75 people. Miranda Construction is handling the buildout of the Community Care Campus. Hancock said the new Unity House will have 34 rooms and be able to serve 80 to 90 people at a time.Access Louisville is a weekly podcast from Louisville Business First. These trees provide important climate change adaptation functions including shading, cooling, and capturing rainwater. Last week, I sat down with Stephen Davies, a unique voice in sustainable architecture and community development. Stephen's journey from the gritty streets of Bolton and the Manchester party scene to a cycling enthusiast and socially-conscious designer in a quiet town in Cornwall was both unexpected and inspiring. He reflected on how personal challenges and a near-death experience shaped his perspective on life and work. His approach blends philosophical musings with practical solutions to the problems of globalism by embracing a localism strategy for building sustainable food systems, communities, and building practices. Stephen is particularly passionate about hempcrete, a carbon-negative building material that he sees as a game-changer for the construction industry and local economies.Stephen embodies the power of embracing change and is a testament to how personal transformation can drive broader social and environmental change.I hope you enjoy this refreshing and thought-provoking take on creating resilient communities in an uncertain world. He is also the Senior Vice President of Strategy for Legacy Sustainability, an independent consultancy that he and his wife, Susan Groh manage to develop and implement climate mitigation and adaptation strategies around major sporting events.Jack and Susan have been minimizing the environmental impacts of major sports events for 30 years, including the NFL's major special events. They also designed the sustainability plan for the NCAA College Football championship series. They are widely recognized for the unique and impactful community projects they develop and have consulted on sustainable transportation development, municipal waste diversion, building sustainability, and renewable energy.Ted and Jack discuss his varied background, growing up in Massachusetts, attending UMass Amherst, then going on to teach straight out of college before going back to school for journalism, spending some years TV reporting, before diving into consulting in communications and PR for companies around environmental issues. Since then, Jack and Susan Groh, now based in Warwick, Rhode Island, have been at the forefront of making the NFL and other organizations more environmentally conscious. In 1993, they developed the first environmental initiatives ever implemented at any professional sports league in the United States at Super Bowl XXVIII in Atlanta, Georgia. Their journey began with simple recycling projects during the Super Bowl and evolved into making the game the greenest professional championship in the world. Their efforts extend beyond visible actions, including recycling, food recovery and material repurposing, to making a substantial difference in the environmental and community impact of large events. Through their independent consulting efforts at Legacy Sustainability, they aim to leave each community better than they found it and inspire others to do the same. Some of the green legacy programs they leave behind in every community include planting trees, creating pollinator gardens, habitat restoration, equipment donations and school supply programs, recycling and composting, taking excess food and drink off to local food banks, and using renewable energy and helping organizations get renewable energy certificates. Jack highlights the Miami Coral Reef Project, Super Kids Super Sharing event, and the NFL Green Super Bowl LVIII Program launch.

Angie Thornton (Women's Ministry Director for TGC Quebec) speaks with Mike about the importance of seeking feedback and input from others as well as the irreplaceable value of solitude when it comes to preparing to teach the Bible.   They speak about the significance of seeking input on your teachings, both before and after the message has been delivered. Learn how constructive feedback can enhance your impact and deepen your understanding of God's Word. Thinking of Bible teaching as a "Community Project" will challenge conventional notions as we discuss the communal aspect of Bible teaching. Angie believes that teaching is not just a solo venture but a collaborative effort within the community of faith. There are some tips about how to navigate feedback: How to give it and how to receive it!  The longest section of the conversation focuses specifically on why men who teach the Bible should specifically seek out the input and the unique perspectives of women, and in so doing, are actually putting in to practice the complementarian convictions that we both hold dearly.  Whether you're a seasoned teacher or just starting, Angie Valasquez Thornton's insights will inspire you to embrace the collective wisdom of the community for a richer, more impactful teaching ministry. Together with her husband Dan, Angie served the Lord in Senegal for 10 years in leadership development. Settled in Montreal with their 2 daughters since August 2017, they continue to train leaders among French Canadians, the least evangelized people group in the North America.
