In this enlightening presentation, Alex Meaney breaks down the fundamental concepts of airflow in HVAC systems using practical analogies and real-world examples. Rather than diving straight into complex mathematics, Alex focuses on helping technicians and contractors understand what's actually happening inside ductwork and why traditional design methods may be falling short in modern residential systems. Alex begins by addressing one of the most critical yet misunderstood aspects of ductwork: the exponential relationship between duct size and airflow capacity. He explains that the difference between a 6-inch and 7-inch duct isn't just 17% more capacity—it's actually 36% more, because airflow is determined by cross-sectional area (which increases geometrically) rather than linear measurements. This fundamental misunderstanding leads to significant underperformance in many HVAC installations. The presentation tackles the confusion surrounding pressure terminology in the HVAC industry, where the single word "pressure" is used to describe four distinct concepts: static pressure, velocity pressure, pressure loss, and external static pressure. Alex uses creative analogies, including a memorable demonstration with an inflatable tube dancer (referencing the "used car lot" in his title), to illustrate how static pressure and velocity pressure are always in balance—when one increases, the other decreases proportionally. A major focus of the discussion centers on why the traditional 0.1 inches of water column per 100 feet friction rate, long considered standard in residential duct design, is no longer adequate for modern systems. Alex explains that today's homes have evolved significantly: they're larger, use more restrictive filters for air quality, have more complex coil designs, and often place equipment in suboptimal locations. These factors combine to create much higher system resistance than the 0.1 standard was designed to handle. He advocates for using lower friction rates (like 0.06) and emphasizes that proper duct sizing is more critical than ever. The presentation concludes with practical insights about system design philosophy, emphasizing that while homeowners may not complain about poorly performing systems, HVAC professionals should use objective measurement tools rather than customer satisfaction as the primary indicator of system performance. Alex stresses that craftsmen in the field will make systems work regardless of design flaws, but this shouldn't excuse poor initial design practices. Key Topics Covered Duct Sizing Fundamentals The geometric relationship between duct diameter and airflow capacity Why linear measurements can be misleading when calculating system performance The critical importance of proper duct sizing in modern installations Pressure Concepts Demystified Static pressure vs. velocity pressure and their inverse relationship How pressure and friction work together in ductwork systems External static pressure as a measure of fan capability The role of pressure in airflow generation and control Friction and Resistance in Ductwork Understanding friction as the primary enemy of airflow How fittings create equivalent lengths of straight duct The impact of direction changes and system components on airflow Comparing flex duct vs. metal duct friction characteristics Modern System Design Challenges Why traditional 0.1 friction rates no longer work effectively The evolution of residential systems: larger homes, better filters, complex coils Equipment placement strategies and their impact on system performance The "war on sensible" and "war on blowers" affecting modern HVAC design Measurement and Verification Methods Tools for measuring static pressure and velocity pressure The importance of using objective measurement tools over customer satisfaction Available static pressure calculations and their practical applications Manual D design principles and their real-world limitations Practical Design Philosophy Working backwards from blower capacity rather than arbitrary friction rates Balancing system performance with budget constraints The importance of central equipment placement for optimal airflow Professional standards vs. "good enough" mentality in system design Have a question that you want us to answer on the podcast? Low (1977) is David Bowie's groundbreaking 11th studio album and the first installment in his celebrated "Berlin Trilogy," produced in collaboration with Brian Eno and Tony Visconti. Marking a radical departure from his previous glam rock sound, Low is split into two distinct halves: the first side features fragmented, experimental art rock and electronic pop songs, while the second side dives into haunting, ambient instrumentals. Recorded in the wake of personal turmoil and relocation to West Berlin, the album reflects themes of alienation, dislocation, and emotional numbness. Tracks like “Sound and Vision” and “Be My Wife” showcase Bowie's minimalist lyrical approach, while Side B's atmospheric compositions such as “Warszawa” evoke a post-war European desolation. Initially polarizing, Low is now widely regarded as one of Bowie's most influential and visionary works, paving the way for post-punk, new wave, and ambient music.Listen to the album on Apple MusicListen to the album on SpotifyWhat did you think of this album? Join The Horror Movie Maniacs Grant and Ben as they team with Marc to ruthlessly shatter Scott's cherished childhood memories of the beloved Jim Henson classic, Labyrinth! For decades, Scott has clung to the notion that the 1986 fantasy epic is a beacon of pure, innocent magic, a whimsical adventure filled with catchy songs and memorable creatures. But prepare yourselves, because Grant and Ben are here to expose the truly unsettling, often predatory darker undertones lurking just beneath the film's enchanting surface. In this eye-opening episode, we're not just re-watching Labyrinth; we're dissecting it with an adult, and perhaps slightly twisted, lens. The conversation kicks off by meticulously examining Jareth, the Goblin King, portrayed with iconic flair by David Bowie. While many remember him as a flamboyant, enigmatic rock star villain, Grant and Ben argue his true nature is far more sinister. They'll delve into his unsettling obsession with the 15-year-old Sarah, peeling back the layers of his manipulative charm to reveal a deeply possessive, almost predatory desire. Is Jareth merely trying to trick Sarah into staying, or is he actively trying to claim her, to make her his queen, bound forever to his labyrinthine domain? The hosts will dissect pivotal scenes like the "Magic Dance" and the infamous "As the World Falls Down" ballroom sequence, revealing how these visually stunning moments actually serve as potent metaphors for manipulation and psychological entrapment.Check out Horror Movie Maniacs here - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/horror-movie-maniacs/id1688748986?uo=4&itsct=podtail_podcasts&itscg=30200&ls=1&at=1001l39ag&ct=uk-podcasts.co.uk

This month we appear to be teleporting between CBGB's, Studio 54, The 100 Club, The Berlin Wall and some kind of prog gig in a field in Cambridgeshire as we battle over our favourite songs of 1977!We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - David Bowie, Chic, Commodores, Elvis Costello, The Damned, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Dean Friedman, Fleetwood Mac, Peter Gabriel, Heldon, Richard Hell, Billy Joel, Kiss, Fela Kuti, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Anthony Phillips, Pink Floyd, Plastic Bertrand, Iggy Pop, Queen, Ramones, Suicide, Talking Heads, Television, George Thorogood & The Destroyers, Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers, John Williams & The London Symphony Orchestra, Wire, Bill Withers, & X-Ray SpexFind all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4Gh83sLsD9mCpQAIliafVB?si=49b9628e338d4c77Find our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes (which need updating but I plan on doing them over the next few months or so), you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Bluesky - https://bsky.app/profile/wedigmusic.bsky.socialInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com

Chris Ashford of What Records? discusses releasing the first LA punk single "Forming" by the Germs, rarities, tapes, memories of Darby Crash and early punk scene stories. Topics Include: Chris Ashford founded What Records? and knew Germs members George (Pat Smear) and Paul (Darby Crash) He worked in record stores through high school and was fascinated by record labels Chris decided to start a label while his friends formed the Germs band He had no formal education about making records, learned from Richard Fuse at Rhino "Forming" was recorded in a garage with two-track deck and two microphones The single had multiple takes but most were erased years ago B-side used cassette recording from Germs' Cheech & Chong "Up in Smoke" audition Master tape for "Forming" is missing, possibly in Canada, but Chris owns rights Cheech & Chong footage shows Germs performing "Sexboy" - same version as B-side They kept the cassette source secret initially to avoid potential lawsuits Lou Adler excluded Germs from movie because audiences wouldn't believe they were real Chris missed the "Up in Smoke" taping because he had to work his day job He financed all What Records releases including "Forming" himself Black rectangle on sleeve was intentionally ambiguous, meant as tongue-in-cheek band photo Address on record was Chris's parents' house where he lived He quickly moved to P.O. Box and removed address to protect his mother First pressing had wrong labels on wrong sides due to Monarch pressing plant error About 1,000 copies were made, most of original pressing was destroyed 600-700 defective records were thrown down hill as frisbees for fun None of them expected anything significant to happen with the record "Forming" was technically the first independent DIY punk single from Los Angeles The record served as legitimizing calling card for the Germs Darby Crash was gifted lyricist despite his troubled background and demons Chris received Germs burn from Michelle Ghaffari at the Whiskey without warning Germs burns became insider thing in summer 1977, wider trend came later Darby never fully matured, died at 22 before becoming complete person Germs often performed as chaotic train wreck, unlike disciplined bands like Stooges Darby had difficult childhood and family problems that created his demons David Bowie was Darby's favorite outlet, influenced his dreamy/nihilistic worldview Chris saw potential for Darby to become writer beyond just being lyricist Extended and high resolution version of this podcast is available at: www.Patreon.com/VinylGuide Listen on Apple: https://apple.co/2Y6ORU0 Listen on Spotify: https://spoti.fi/36qhlc8

Hello and welcome to How Did I Get Here? From The Vault! Today we go back to episode 88 for a great conversation with rock and roll legend, Hunt Sales (Tin Machine, Iggy Pop, Todd Rundgren) originally released on July 24, 2012! Below are my original notes form the show. My guest for episode 88 is the great Hunt Sales! Hunt is a rock and roll treasure. Wether he's being the backbone and backbeat of Iggy Pop's "Lust For Life", the backbone, backbeat and personality of Tin Machine (Hunt's band with David Bowie) or the songwriting & drumming lead singer of his newest band, The Hunt Sales Memorial, he's playing with the kind of passion that moves you. or at least, moves me. My friend Bevis (Griffin, who's been a guest on this show), texted me Saturday about havin Hunt on the show. I flipped-out and sad, YES! so, yesterday hunt came over to the apartment and we got to talk. We got to patch-up some weirdness that was lingering between from a record we worked on over a decade ago and he told me about his journey. From being around his father, Soupy's musician friends, playing his first session at 10 years old, Todd Rundgren at 15, Iggy Pop and David Bowie, working and most of all, staying true to what you do. Hunt is an inspiration. He plays from his heart. He always has. Check out the videos on our facebook page and you'll see what I mean. This conversation inspired me to no end. Thank you, Hunt. ciao, jg Follow us on Instagram, TikTok, X, Facebook, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or anywhere you pod. Send someone the gift of Johnny with Cameo. If you feel so inclined. Mathletics is gaining steam, the legendary Lee Iacocca, a strange little Michael Madsen film with a great cast, the passing of two political titans, some Falk talk, an unfortunately named new supplement I'm taking, remembering Hervé Villechaize, an arthouse classic sci-fi film from the 1970s, and David Bowie can't stop singing. Stuff mentioned: Sixteen Candles (1984), The Godfather (1972), Novocaine (2025), The Winner (1997), The In-Laws (1979), Fantasy Island (1977-1984), The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976), David Bowie "Ashes to Ashes" (1980), David Bowie Scary Monsters [and Super Creeps] (1980), David Bowie "Space Oddity" (1969), and David Bowie David Bowie (1969).

Drew ArnottTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Drew Arnott. In this episode, Drew and I chat about his growing up between Scottland and Canada, and why. Then we do a bit of a deep dive on the unique and rare instrument called The Mellotron. Drew shares some fun and nutty stories about his own Mellotron, and then we get into why he and Darryl Kromm started Strange Advance in the first place. Strange Advance signed a deal with Capitol Records and released TWO albums; having never played a single live show. Drew explains how that is even possible, and why that happened. The first THREE records released by Strange Advance sold GOLD in Canada, and then they stopped making music..... for 33 years. I ask Drew what the heck happened, and he gives me the deets. Strange Advance has released a new record. Thier fourth record, aptly titled 'Strange Advance 4' is out now, and is a banger! Drew graciously agrees to let me play 'Flow My Tears', my favorite track from the new album, and you will understand why that is my fave. Currently, you can catch Strange Advance playing in and around Canada, at various shows and events. Make sure you follow them on social media, specifically Facebook, and check out their website to find out when they will be playing a show near you.

It’s a celebration of the 40th anniversary of Live Aid! Live Aid was grand in scope and ambition. It was largely the brainchild of an unlikely hero, Bob Geldof, the Irish singer who fronted The Boomtown Rats, and who had helped assemble the all-star cast of Band Aid. Watched by 1.5 billion people, Live Aid eventually raised $127 US million for famine relief in Africa. But beyond that, Live Aid was also a cultural touchstone that showed the power of pop music and the determination of millions of people to make a difference in the world. Hours before the event took place, Christopher Ward had a chat with organizer Bob Geldof, who, in his intense way, told of the importance of Live Aid. He disputes the cultural significance in favour of the pragmatic view of delivering much needed aid to African famine relief. It’s an extraordinary interview with a man who is firing on all cylinders, almost to the breaking point. And of course, we also talk about the music, including: Although Geldof didn’t want them in the lineup, Freddie Mercury and the band provided the most memorable 22 minutes of the day, perhaps the best ever performance in music history. U2 – We have the full story of why they played only two songs that day… and how it became a major moment on their road to superstardom. David Bowie’s set was also memorable. But he almost didn’t play that day. And it was all because of a CBC report on the famine. We have the full story. Duran Duran. Simon LeBon made a considerable gaffe during one of their songs. He considers it the most embarrassing moment of his career. Led Zeppelin - why Jimmy Page blamed Phil Collins for Zeppelin’s less than perfect performance. There were also a number of artists who chose not to perform that day, including Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, Prince, Culture Club and Huey Lewis. At least two of those acts regretted that decision. And we talk about the importance of Live Aid as a cultural milestone. Famous Lost Words, hosted by Christopher Ward and Tom Jokic, is heard in more than 100 countries worldwide and on radio stations across Canada, including Newstalk 1010 Toronto, CJAD 800 Montreal, 580 CFRA Ottawa, AM 800 CKLW Windsor, 610 CKTB St Catharines, CFAX Victoria, AM1150 Kelowna and 91x in Belleville. It is in the Top 20% of worldwide podcasts based on the number of listeners in the first week.

Filmmaker Mark Romanek's early love of cinema not only lead him to early acclaim at Sundance for his 1986 film Static, but his later award-winning feature films like One Hour Photo (2002), and Never Let Me Go (2010). But it also lead him to become one of the most prolific and identifiable auteurs of the 1990's music video boom, with a client list that includes Jay-Z, Beck, Fiona Apple, Beyonce, Nine Inch Nails, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Lady Gaga, David Bowie, and even Johnny Cash. It's a classic episode of Baxie's Musical Podcast with guitar legend Carlos Alomar from June of 2023! From 1974 to 2003 Carlos Alomar was the longest serving band member during David Bowie's historic career. He served as one of the key members of Bowie's infamous D.A.M. rhythm section--playing during the most artistically power stretch of his career. But that's not all. Carlos has played on more than 30 different gold or platinum albums with an enormous resume that includes names like James Brown, Chuck Berry, Bruce Springsteen, Duran Duran, Alicia Keyes, Iggy Pop, Luther Vandross, The Pretenders, Simple Minds (featuring his wife Robin Clark), Ben E. King, The Main Ingredient, and the late Tina Turner as well. This is one of the most astonishingly brilliant guests EVER! One of my favorite episodes! Absolutely amazing! In July 1985, music legends Mick Jagger and David Bowie were asked to perform a duet with a twist at Live Aid, the biggest concert in pop history. Utilising the latest satellite technology, Mick would perform on the US stage in Philadelphia, while David would perform on the UK stage at Wembley Stadium. As the technical issues were being discussed, it soon became obvious that a half-second delay in the link between cities would prevent the live performance from happening, so a recording was planned instead. A short list of songs was discussed before the duo finally settled on the Motown classic Dancing in the Street. Live Aid press officer Bernard Doherty tells Des Shaw how the duet and video were recorded in just 18 hours and became a highlight of the benefit concert on 13 July 1985. A Zinc Media production.Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more.
