On this edition of Parallax Views, we dive into the struggles facing men in modern society with two insightful guests: Alex Gendler, author of "The New Superfluous Men" in American Affairs Journal, and Ryan Zickgraf, author of "Working-Class Men Are Not Okay" in Jacobin. Gendler unpacks the incel phenomenon, exploring how economic shifts, social alienation, and demographic imbalances have contributed to a growing class of men who feel expendable in a post-industrial world. Meanwhile, Zickgraf examines the deeper crisis afflicting working-class men—rising mortality rates, economic precarity, loneliness, and the erosion of traditional support networks. Are these issues cultural, political, or economic at their core? How do they fit into broader discussions about gender, class, and social discontent? And what solutions—if any—exist for reversing these trends? All that and more on this thought-provoking episode of Parallax Views.

There's a bizarre object out in space that's not a star and not a planet, but it's hotter than the Sun! It's called a “brown dwarf,” sometimes nicknamed a “failed star.” Brown dwarfs are too small to start nuclear fusion like real stars, but they're much bigger and hotter than regular planets. One brown dwarf, called WD 0032-317B, is especially strange because it gets heated up by a nearby white dwarf (a super-hot leftover core of a dead star). This makes its atmosphere reach temperatures of over 14,000 degrees Fahrenheit, hotter than the surface of our Sun! It's a wild example of how weird and surprising the universe can be. In this episode, we look into how we can learn from intentionally guiding our imagination while also looking into how much of the imagination operates outside of our conscious control. We also continue to explore the limits of imagination and how it can be used for both good and ill. Our guest scholar in this episode is Dr. Tamar Gendler, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Vincent J. Scully Professor of Philosophy, and Professor of Psychology and Cognitive Science at Yale University. --- Dr. Tamar Szabó Gendler is Yale's Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Vincent J. Scully Professor of Philosophy, and Professor of Psychology and Cognitive Science. She holds a BA summa cum laude with Distinction in Humanities and in Mathematics-&-Philosophy from Yale University (1987) and a PhD in Philosophy from Harvard University (1996). After teaching at Syracuse and Cornell Universities for nearly a decade, she returned to Yale in 2006 as Professor of Philosophy and Chair of the Cognitive Science Program. In 2009-10, supported by the Mellon Foundation's New Directions program, she spent a year as a full-time student at Yale doing coursework in psychology, neuroscience, and statistics. In 2010, she was appointed Chair of the Yale philosophy department, becoming the first woman chair in the department's two-century history. In 2013, she was appointed Deputy Provost for Humanities and Initiatives, a position she held until she assumed her current role in 2014. As FAS Dean, Gendler has focused on building excellence and collaboration within and across traditional disciplinary boundaries throughout the divisions in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and across the university more broadly. Gendler's academic research brings together the techniques of traditional Anglo-American philosophy with empirical work from psychology and other social sciences; her interests include the relation between imagination and belief, the contrast between rational and non-rational persuasion, and the role of habits in shaping behavior and judgment. Many of these issues are explored in her Open Yale course, Philosophy and the Science of Human Nature. She also has interests in education policy and practice, and worked for several years after she graduated from Yale as an education policy analyst at the RAND Corporation. Gendler is the author of Intuition, Imagination, and Philosophical Methodology (Oxford, 2013), Thought Experiments: On the Powers and Limits of Imaginary Cases (Routledge, 2000), and co-editor of The Elements of Philosophy (Oxford 2008), Perceptual Experience (Oxford, 2006), Conceivability and Possibility (Oxford 2002), and the Oxford Handbook of Philosophical Methodology (Oxford 2016). ---While her full catalog of articles and books is far too long to list here, the publications below provide a useful introduction to her scholarship addressing the topic of imagination: Gendler, T. S. (2014). Thought experiment: On the powers and limits of imaginary cases. Routledge. Gendler, T. S. (2000). The puzzle of imaginative resistance. The Journal of Philosophy, 97(2), 55-81. Gendler, T. S., & Hawthorne, J. (Eds.). (2002). Conceivability and possibility. Clarendon Press. Liao, S. Y., & Gendler, T. (2019). In this episode, Dr. Ellen Gendler, a New York City dermatologist, discusses the role of estrogen in skincare and hair care. She shares her journey on social media and addresses the stigma of vanity in skincare. Dr. Gendler emphasizes the importance of using topical estrogen in selected areas of the face and hands, highlighting the need for longer-term studies on its efficacy. She also recommends incorporating vitamin C and DNA repair enzymes into skincare routines. Additionally, she discusses the differences between prescription tretinoin and over-the-counter retinols, emphasizing the importance of sunscreen in protecting the skin from sun damage. In this conversation, Dr. Ellen Gendler discusses various topics related to skincare and haircare. She talks about the effectiveness of moisturizers and the impact of alcohol on the skin. She also addresses midlife hair loss and the different treatment options available. Dr. Gendler shares her insights on eyebrow growth and microblading, as well as the use of Botox and fillers. She provides her perspective on exosomes and peptides in skincare and haircare products. Finally, she emphasizes the importance of using retinoids and sunscreen for healthy skin and discusses the role of dental health in facial aging. Takeaways Moisturizers are not always effective, and alcohol can dehydrate the skin and cause flares of rosacea. Midlife hair loss is a common issue, and there are various treatment options available, including spironolactone and minoxidil. Microblading can be risky and may lead to scarring, while eyebrow pencils are a safer and cheaper alternative. Botox can be a miracle treatment when done correctly, but it should be administered by a trained professional. Fillers can enhance facial features, but it's important to choose a skilled injector and avoid permanent fillers. Exosomes and peptides in skincare and haircare products are not yet proven to slow down the aging process. Retinoids and sunscreen are essential for healthy skin, and dental health plays a role in facial aging. It's important to be discerning when it comes to skincare and haircare products and choose what works best for you. https://gendlerdermatology.com/ https://www.instagram.com/ellengendlermd/ Solv Wellness To learn more about Solv Wellness and their products for female pelvic health, visit solvwellness.com for 30% off your first purchase of any product. Welcome to the Areni Global podcast. Today's episode “The Purpose of Education in a Changing World: In Conversation with Tamar Gendler” discusses education, and its future. Education is integral to the preservation and dissemination of fine wine. Host Pauline Vicard and Gendler explore the idea of education that transcends time and culture, defining education in a way that applies to ancient times, modern industrialized societies, and even pre-industrial, pre-technological societies. While the process and methods of education may change across these contexts due to differences in subject matter, social constraints, and evolving techniques, the fundamental "why" of education, which likely involves knowledge transfer and skill development, remains a consistent underlying principle. (Philosophical thinking caps are not optional in this episode!) More about today's guest Tamar Szabó Gendler: Tamar Szabó Gendler is Yale's Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences, the Vincent J. Tamar Gendler is an academic known for her interdisciplinary approach, blending traditional philosophy with insights from psychology and social sciences. Her research explores topics like the connection between imagination and belief, rational versus non-rational persuasion, and the impact of habits on behavior and judgment. Gendler has received prestigious fellowships, including from the Andrew W. Rabbi Everett Gendler (August 8, 1928 - April 1, 2022) was an American rabbi, known for his involvement in progressive causes, including the civil rights movement. He has also been widely referred to as the founder of the Jewish environmental movement. About ten years ago at the Rabbinical Assembly Convention in Atlanta, he recorded a conversation with Rabbi Ed Bernstein on Jewish environmentalism. At the time Rabbi Bernstein was Spiritual Leader of Temple Torah, now Temple Torat Emet, of Boynton Beach, FL. Rabbi Bernstein was experimenting with podcasting and recorded interviews with various thought leaders that were then published on Temple Torah's podcast. That feed is no longer online. Rabbi Bernstein's interview with Rabbi Gendler from that series is presented here. A transcript of Dr. King's public dialogue at the RA Convention with Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel and Rabbi Everett Gendler was published in Conservative Judaism Journal, 22:3, 1968, pp. 1-19. This was one of Dr. King's final major public appearances prior to his assassination ten days later on April 4.

Our guest on this week's episode of the B&H Photography Podcast is physician and astrophotographer, Robert Gendler. The distinguished assignments, numerous international accolades, and five published books are an indication of the significance of the work of this self-described amateur. His mosaic of the Andromeda Galaxy has been used to create 3D IMAX films and is considered the largest image of a spiral galaxy ever taken.   With Gendler we discuss his craft and career. We talk of his early days creating deep sky images from a suburban driveway and how his process and gear has evolved over the years. We talk a bit about telescopes and binoculars and clarify some of the terminology used in astrophotography. We learn of important figures in the field and just how difficult space photography was in the pre-digital days.   Our conversation in the second half of the show focuses on Gendler's recent work creating large mosaics of galaxies and nebulae, often from hundreds if not thousands of unique exposures. We get a sense of how the colors are determined and how he mines data from the Hubble Heritage Team and other the amateur and professional archives to create these beautiful images.   This episode of the B&H Photography Podcast was supported by Pelican.     Guest: Dr. Robert Gendler Photograph © Robert Gendler

Can the fact that something is morally wrong to believe affect whether the evidence you have justifies that belief? In her paper, Georgi Gardiner argues that the answer is "no". We should follow the evidence where it leads and align our beliefs with the evidence. And if we do that, she argues, we’ll discover that morally wrong beliefs—such as racist beliefs--simply don’t align with the evidence. On this view, racist beliefs are irrational because they are unsupported by evidence or reflect cognitive errors in statistical reasoning, not because they are immoral. My contention is that no such belief can exist. If a belief is morally wrong then there is some corresponding prior epistemic error. The belief is not well supported by the evidence and/or it is not interpreted through a morally appropriate understanding, and that understanding is not epistemically well supported. If a belief is epistemically well supported it cannot be racist since no true fact is genuinely racist. With the right background understanding we see that since everyone is equal, any differences based on gender, race, and so on are morally insignificant." Special Guest: Georgi Gardiner.

The murder of two-thirds of European Jews, referred to by many as the Holocaust, did not begin June 22, 1941, with the German invasion of the Soviet Union, or September 1, 1939, with the beginning of WWII, or with 1938 Kristallnacht, or even with the 1933 rise of Hitler. According to Alexander Gendler, it began on August 1, 1914, with the start of WWI, of which WWII was just its continuation. It was then that Russia's Imperial Army of Nicholas II committed the now largely forgotten genocide of Russian Jews. His new book, Khurbm 1914-1922: Prelude to the Holocaust (Varda Books, 2019), is the most extensive collection of eye-witness testimonies and official communications revealing the genocidal destruction of Jewish life by the Russian army during World War I. What does it mean for something to be impossible? In the world of science, some might say that things like time travel or invincibility fall into this category. But in philosophy, bending the laws of physics is fair game. However, there are still some things that are considered philosophically impossible. An emerging class of philosophers takes these ideas to the next level by reasoning about impossible worlds: alternate universes that contain impossible situations and objects. What do these worlds look like, and are they real? On this episode, we explore the impossible and why impossible worlds may be a key part of the ultimate nature of who and what we are.Twitter: grand_theoriesInstagram: grandtheoriesFacebook: grandtheoriesMusic (in order of appearance):1. In this episode of Every Quarter, educator and alumna Tamar Szabó Gendler speaks with Andrew Housiaux, Currie Family Director of the Tang Institute, about changing face of higher education and the responsibility prestigious institutions have in owning their histories. They also discuss Gendler’s experience with the Mellon Foundation’s New Directions program, wherein Gendler essentially became a full-time student at Yale during the 2009–2010 academic year, completing coursework in psychology, neuroscience, and statistics. Gendler, Andover Class of 1983, also shares moments of nostalgia, recounting memories with the Jewish Students Union in Cochran Chapel, growing up as a faculty child, and how changing her focus from math to social sciences lead her to the path she is currently on. During her visit to campus in November, she was presented with the Andover Alumni Award of Distinction. Gendler is Yale’s inaugural Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Vincent J. Scully Professor of Philosophy, and Professor of Psychology and Cognitive Science.

Our guest’s 13 year-old face has left an indelible impression upon the memory of every Beatles fan who has ever watched their debut appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. Deb Supnik (nee Gendler), dubbed “the first fan” by director Andrew Solt, is much more than just an attendee of The Beatles’ first live TV performance in America: her life changed forever that evening. Over the next several years, she worked tirelessly on behalf of the group (and their US fans) while maintaining relationships with members of the group’s organization (and even the odd Beatle parent or two). Deb has shared her amazing stories in documentaries before, but here she gets to present them full-length and in exquisite detail. Find Richard’s books here. Find Robert’s books here. The 88th Joint Session of the Aristotelian Society and the Mind Association was held at the University of Cambridge from 11 to 13 July 2014. The Joint Session is a three-day conference in philosophy that is held annually during the summer by the Aristotelian Society and the Mind Association. It has taken place at nearly every major university across the United Kingdom and in Ireland. Since 1910, the Joint Session has grown to become the largest gathering of philosophers in the country, attracting prestigious UK and international speakers working in a broad range of philosophical areas. Inaugurated by the incoming President of the Mind Association, the Joint Session includes symposia, open and postgraduate sessions, and a range of satellite conferences. This podcast is a recording of the fifth and final symposium at the Joint Session - "Self-Regulation" - which featured Tamar Szabó Gendler (Yale) and Jennifer Nagel (Toronto). Tamar Gendler is the Vincent J. Scully Professor of Philosophy, Professor of Psychology and Cognitive Science, and Deputy Provost for Humanities and Initiatives at Yale University, where she has taught since 2006. Previously, she taught Philosophy and Cognitive Science at Cornell and Syracuse Universities, after earning her PhD at Harvard University in 1996. Much of her recent philosophical work has focused a cluster of issues surrounding the relations between explicit and implicit attitudes, particularly in the context of habit, self-regulation, and implicit bias; other current interests include general questions about philosophical methodology, and a number of specific issues that arise from thinking about the relation between imagination and belief. Her earlier philosophical work addressed various topics in metaphysics and epistemology including conceivability and possibility, perceptual experience, personal identity, and the methodology of thought experiment. A collection of some of her papers was published under the title Intuition, Imagination and Philosophical Methodology (Oxford, 2010). Jennifer Nagel is Associate Professor of Philosophy and Associate Chair at the University of Toronto, where she has worked since 2000. She was a Visiting Fellow at All Souls College Oxford in 2012, and at the Institute for Advanced Study in Jerusalem in 2011. Her recent work focuses on the relationship between intuitive knowledge attribution and knowledge itself; it aims to bridge the gap between empirical work on mental state attribution and theoretical work in epistemology.

TAMAR GENDLER is professor of philosophy at Yale University and chair of the university’s philosophy department. From 2006 to 2010, she served as chair of Yale’s cognitive science program. During the 2009- 2010 year, Gendler was a full-time student at Yale University, supported by a Mellon New Directions Fellowship, and took courses in neuroscience, psychology, and psychiatry. Gendler has been on the faculty at Yale since 2006. From 2003-2006, she was associate professor of philosophy at Cornell University and co-director of Cornell’s program in cognitive studies. From 1997-2003, she taught philosophy at Syracuse University as an assistant and then associate professor. Gendler received her Ph.D. in philosophy from Harvard University in 1996 for work conducted under the tutelage of Robert Nozick, Derek Parfit, and Hilary Putnam. She received her BA in humanities and mathematics-and-philosophy from Yale University in 1987. Between her undergraduate and graduate studies, she did education policy work for the RAND Corporation. Gendler’s professional philosophical writings focus primarily on issues in philosophical psychology, epistemology, metaphysics and aesthetics. Recently, she has given a number of public lectures on the topic of human flourishing. Most of her current professional work is on a cluster of issues surrounding the relations between explicit and implicit attitudes. She is interested in bringing together insights from traditional philosophical work on parts of the soul with contemporary work in social, cognitive, and clinical psychology. Gendler’s other current interests include general questions about philosophical methodology, and a number of specific issues that arise from thinking about the relation between imagination and belief. Her earlier philosophical work addressed various topics in metaphysics and epistemology, including conceivability and possibility, perceptual experience, personal identity, and the methodology of thought experiments. Her research and teaching are informed both by the tools of traditional analytic philosophy, and by recent empirical work in developmental, cognitive and social psychology. This event was originally presented on June 17, 2012 at the Yale University Art Gallery as part of the International Festival of Arts & Ideas.
