Cathy Gohlke's book, Ladies of the Lake, has astute readers asking a plethora of questions from the get go. Why is Rosaline Murray no longer Adelaide? Why won't she go to her daughter's graduation? Why did she want to disguise her voice? What is Dot's secret? What is Rolsaline's veil for? Join Kate and Sheila as they join Addie on her tumultuous journey. “Dear God and Father of us all, we come to You heartbroken, grieving the sudden and terrible loss of Adelaide's beloved parents. We grieve for the loss of their strong arms about her and the loss of the home where she was born and felt safe. Now she's on a journey, Lord, into the unknown. Be with her Father. Let her know Your love and care. Bring others into her life to help her. Remind her daily in tangible ways that she does not travel this life alone…Hold her, guide her, Father. Bless her with courage and peace only You can give. Thank You for placing this dear girl, my new friend, in my path. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.” What a beautiful prayer from the lovely woman, Mrs. Simmons, that Adelaide aka Addie met on the train! Addie's older brother, Lemuel, sends her off to Lakeside Ladies Academy in Connecticut after the sudden drowning of her parents at sea. At the young age of twelve, she is whisked away from Prince Edward Island enroute to a new country. Addie meets Dot, Ruth and Susanna who become dear friends. The girls graduate in 1910 and Addie and Dot remain at the school to teach. They are both in love with Stephen Meyer and as tension between the girls mounts so does the tension between townspeople toward the Meyers family because their family came from Germany. Fear fuels folks to throw bricks and hand out white feathers. Are you ready to read a gripping tale told by two narrators, Addie and Dot, in two time periods, 1911-1917 (past) and 1935 (present day)? “We are all scarred in one way or another.” Ruth Scars, inside or out, should not define us. Our identity shouldn't be in what we've lost but in God's plan for us. Happy reading dear friends! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/recapbookchat/message

Episode 1 (of 3): San Antonio Public Librarians Dacari Lambert, Michael Dunbar-Rodney, and Shannan Prukop discuss the queer past of San Antonio and particularly its history with female impersonators/drag shows, with assistant archivist Melissa Gohlke from UTSA. Listen in to learn about Zelldo and Hotcha, how the military handled all this queerness, and where the queer buildings of the past have gone. This is the start of a series of episodes covering the queer past, present, and future in San Antonio and how that intersects with libraries, and a new podcast we're calling: InQueeries. As writers, our goal is to encourage and challenge our readers, to point them to God and His truth. In fact, guest Cathy Gohlke takes that a step farther and encourages us to be “pen warriors and light bearers.” She shares how God showed her this was her job as a writer, and how you, … The post 164 – Be a Pen Warrior! with Guest Cathy Gohlke appeared first on Write from the Deep.
Sacramento Bee writer Josh Gohlke joins Chip and gives his thoughts on the Oroville situation. We are joined for a special episode of Ojai: Talk of the Town with Josh Gohlke, the former deputy opinion page editor of the San Francisco Chronicle. Gohlke has been writing about and covering Gov. Gavin Newson since his 2018 election. He shares his opinion about the recall process, the opera bouffe of the 46 mostly eccentric candidates, the perils of campaigning with bears, and the terrible urgency of this election. Not only can a sitting governor be replaced with someone who is the choice of fewer than 15 percent of the electorate, but control of the U.S. Senate may well be at stake. (Dianne Feinstein, please don't Ruth Bader Ginsburg us. And while we're at it, Justice Stephen Breyer, don't you either). Josh and I catch up about our years in Kernville, California, his strange, nigh mystical relationship with former Department of Water Resources chief Frank Gehrke and why journalism still matters. We also talk about the French Laundry's consciousness-altering menu, the forces behind the recall, the dual nihilism on display in the state and country and the deadline for getting ballots into the mail. We did not talk about Newsom's relationship with either his famous harp-maestro cousin Joanne or his ordeal at the hands of Kimberly Guilfoyle.

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.09.21.305797v1?rss=1 Authors: Kondapuram, M., Frieg, B., Yueksel, S., Schwabe, T., Sattler, C., Lelle, M., Schweinitz, A., Schmauder, R., Benndorf, K., Gohlke, H., Kusch, J. Abstract: Hyperpolarization-activated and cyclic nucleotide (HCN) modulated channels are tetrameric cation channels. In each of the four subunits, the intracellular cyclic nucleotide-binding domain (CNBD) is coupled to the transmembrane domain via a helical structure, the C-linker. High-resolution channel structures suggest that the C-linker enables functionally relevant interactions with the opposite subunit, which might be critical for coupling the conformational changes in the CNBD to the channel pore. We combined mutagenesis, patch-clamp technique, confocal patch-clamp fluorometry, and molecular dynamics simulations to show that residue K464 of the C-linker is essential for stabilizing the closed state of the mHCN2 channel by forming interactions with the opposite subunit. MD simulations revealed that both cAMP and K464E induce a rotation of the intracellular domain relative to the channel pore, weakening the autoinhibitory effect of the unoccupied CL-CNBD region. The adopted poses are in excellent agreement with structural results. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info
For over 50 years, Gohlke Pools has been a pioneer in family backyard living. Since 1958, when Gene Gohlke built one of Denton’s first family swimming pools, the Gohlke family has been selling swimming pool supplies and offering repairs and weekly cleaning service throughout the region. In 1984, when Matt Gohlke graduated from Texas Christian University, he joined the family business working for Gohlke Pool Supply. In 1992, Matt purchased Gohlke Pool Supply and Gohlke Custom Pools. Matt is currently the President and Nick Day is currently the Service Manager. We had a great time interviewing them at the Southwest Pool and Spa show. We have wanted to have them on the podcast since the beginning and we're excited that we could finally make it happen. We think they do an incredible job when it comes to hiring, training, and retaining their employees. Our interview with them covers those topics among others. We understand this is one of the industry’s biggest struggles at the moment and we hope this episode gives you a few ideas to help with your business as well.
