Kameron also serves on LIMRA's Retirement Plan Advisory Board and holds a BA in philosophy, politics, and economics from the University of Pennsylvania, where he played football. In this episode, Eric, Julie Graham, and Kameron Jones discuss:Setting clear expectations and following a prudent process How live bids differ from blind bids Plan pricing philosophy Factors to consider in structuring a fee Key Takeaways:Engage all stakeholders early, setting clear expectations and timelines. Make decisions with employees' best interests in mind, follow a prudent process, document thoroughly, and avoid conflicts of interest.Conduct live bid RFPs every 3-5 years, sharing full plan details to maximize pricing leverage. Blind bids lack negotiation leverage, leading to less competitive pricing.Plan pricing should match the committee's fairness standards, considering plan size and demographics. Major record keepers sometimes offer blended fees based on account balances.Consider revenue sharing, flat fees, asset-based pricing, ERISA budgets, and DOL guidance for fair fee structures. Leverage economies of scale, negotiate competitive fees, and ensure investment quality through a thorough evaluation.“I think the best practice is to do live bids because when you compare against averages, you don't really have negotiation leverage. When you get live bids, your goal within gathering those is to maximize your negotiation leverage so you can go back to your current provider if you're happy with the services, and negotiate lower fees or enhanced services.” - Kameron JonesConnect with Julie Graham:Email: julie.graham@nfp.com Connect with Kameron Jones:Email: kameron.jones@nfp.com Connect with Eric Dyson: Website: https://90northllc.com/Phone: 940-248-4800Email: contact@90northllc.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/401kguy/ The information and content of this podcast is general in nature and is provided solely for educational and informational purposes. Floss is LIVE! Happy Monday Floss fans! If you're UK based we hope you had a lush long weekend. If you're not, don't worry, we have a treat for you that will make Monday feel like saturday. Model, activist, and now author, Munroe Bergdorf, joined Floss live at the podcast show for a Floss' Five followed by a scintillating exploration of life, love and their illustrious careers. Munroe is a cornerstone of the UK queer community, is a wildly successful model and is a trailblazing voice for social justice, defending the rights of people of colour and marginalised genders. Munroe exemplifies abundance and tells Floss about why she extends the ladder behind her, as well as delivering some wise words on creating space, falling in love, personal growth journeys and maintaining both authenticity and boundaries with the public. Munroe has an incredible podcast called “ The Way We Are” and is one of the most visible transgender people in the UK. As a queer, black, trans woman she stands herself at the intersection of many multiple identities and uses her platform to advocate for other marginalized people. She is a patron of the charity Mermaids, an advocate for UN Women UK, and last year, she was added to L'Oréal's Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Board; mending her relationship with the cosmetics giant after they controversially dropped her from a campaign in 2017 for calling out white privilege and racism. Her achievements and accolades are really quite mind boggling. Expect the lively, empowering and curious conversations that Floss brings to every episode but with that zingy electricity that only an IRL audience can give. Well an IRL audience and an amazing guest like…Munroe Bergdorf! So if you missed it in person, don't worry- turn up the volume, dress up for yourself and you'll feel like you were there! A dynamic and passionate leader in the Las Vegas community, Ericka is the Founder of Ericka Aviles Consulting LLC, is a boutique consulting firm focused on digital communications, marketing, and community relations. Established in 2016 as a multilingual and multicultural Latina owned business, Ericka Aviles Consulting focuses on bridging gaps of language and culture between her clients and the audiences they serve. Today I am very honored to have Nuala Walsh join me on the show. You have heard her voice before as she was part of the contingent that came on to discuss The Global  Association of Applied Behavioural Scientists or GAABS when it first launched in the fall of 2020. In addition to her work to get that started, she is the founder of a consultancy called MindEquity, which specializes in reputation communications, conduct, culture and behaviour change. She is the former chief marketing officer at Standard Life Aberdeen and also previously worked at Blackrock, Merrill Lynch, and PA Consulting. In addition to her consulting work and research (some of which we discuss today), she is also the vice-chair for UN Women (UK), a member of the Inclusion Advisory Board at The Football Association, on the Gender Taskforce at World Athletics, and more.   Nuala is a smart person doing amazing things to be sure and also just a wonderful human. She was kind enough to be a guest lecturer in my Internal Communications and Change Management course at Texas A&M talking about how to apply behavioral economics into mergers and acquisitions. It was truly a fascinating discussion the students loved. Today we are talking about some research Nuala conducted that ended up as an article in the Harvard Business Review. This research is about blowing the whistle at work and she has made some really important — somewhat surprising — discoveries and recommendations.       Show Notes: [00:07] I’m very excited to introduce you to Nuala Walsh, to share about the behavioral science of standing up and blowing the whistle at work. [01:02] In addition to Nuala’s work to get GAABS started, she is a founder of a consultancy called MindEquity which specialized in reputation communications, conduct, culture, and behavior change.  [03:45] Nuala is a repeat guest on The Brainy Business podcast. She made her first appearance on the GAABS episode.  [04:22] Nuala shares about her background and who she is. [05:46] She does a huge amount of work for sports in the discrimination space. The purpose is to level the playing field for athletics.  [08:01] Nuala shares how she got into the diversity, equity and inclusion space. [09:47] Nuala shares her experiences working with the UN women’s Association, World Athletics, and Football Association.  [12:38] Melina reflects on a point from Jon Levy’s interview: in business, most hire for competence first, then honesty, and benevolence at some point. Benevolence is actually most important.   [14:13] Diversity starts with actually hiring diversity (not just have them included in the slate of candidates).  [15:09] One thing that companies can do is to listen to the recruitment agencies. The change really starts at the top.     [16:54] Companies should take the outside view and listen to the other groups that have independent objectivity more than themselves.   [19:02] Nuala shares her research about speaking up at work when seeing wrongdoings. Too many people witness the wrongdoing and stay silent.  [19:56] Her work really focused on how to get bystanders to act.  [21:17] 82% of whistleblowers suffer harassment. 60% of those lost their jobs and 17% lost their homes. 10% of those people attempted suicide. That is a high price to pay for speaking up.    [23:47] In her study, only 10% of people even took the first step of figuring out how to report the problem.   [26:14] It is only estimated that 1.4% of employees blow the whistle and actually do something.  [28:24] With a zero-tolerance policy people are not going to be very keen to speak up.  [31:34] The thing that struck Nuala most in her studies was the number of people that found whistleblowing as an act of courage.   [33:41] If somebody prevents some kind of disaster you can make a hero out of that story and celebrate them. It recognizes their work without putting anyone else at risk.  [34:51] When the environment changes, like working from home, people are more likely to report something (or at least say they will) [35:21] Using the courage stories as evidence-based tracking is key.  [38:38] Melina shares her closing thoughts.  [40:11] Melina’s first book, What Your Customer Wants and Can’t Tell You is officially available on Amazon, Bookshop, Barnes & Noble, Book Depository, and Booktopia.  Thanks for listening. On the Brave Educator post, author, poet, Hip Hop artist, and education advocate Tim'm West will share a story, converse with someone he loves and continues to learn from, and he will close with poetry. All are encouraged to submit questions on topics covered on the podcast to braveeducator@gmail.com. When possible Tim'm will answer these questions on a future podcast. The conversation between Tim'm and his friend and colleague Eliza Byard, Executive Director of GLSEN is a dialogue about both of their experiences in classrooms and schools navigating a world where being who you are isn't always safe. As both leaders await the Supreme Court's ruling on Title VII, which will determine whether or not protections on the basis of sex will extend to cover both sexual orientation and gender identity, they discuss the power of visibility of LGBTQ+ teachers, and also experiences as students with or without the mirrors and windows LGBTQ+ educators can meaningfully provide. The podcast also concludes by extending the conversation to family and community by noting that "stay at home" orders during COVID-19 have put many LGBTQ+ youth at risk, especially when families are disapproving. The episode ends with Tim'm reading "apparent" from his 4th collection "pre|dispositions".Dr. Eliza Byard is the Executive Director of GLSEN (the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network), an organization known worldwide as an innovative leader in the education, youth development and civil rights sectors fighting to end bias-based bullying, violence and discrimination in K-12 schools and promote a culture of respect for all. For more than a decade she has shepherded the growth of GLSEN's public education and advocacy efforts; student organizing and youth leadership development programs; professional development training for educators; research and program evaluation capacity; in-school programming such as No Name-Calling Week, which the National School Boards Association termed “one of the most used and celebrated bullying-prevention programs in the country”; and GLSEN's award-winning Think B4 You Speak Ad Council campaign. Byard has crafted advocacy strategies that have won bipartisan support for GLSEN's issues and widespread acceptance of the urgency and importance of LGBT issues in K-12 education. She serves on the Board of Trustees for America's Promise Alliance, the Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Board for Sodexo, the Steering Committee of the National Collaboration for Youth, and the LGBT Suicide Prevention Task Force of the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention.
