Prof. Subi Rangan from INSEAD business school talks about the evolution of capitalism from an output to outcome economy. Prof Subi Rangan was invited to Luxembourg to make the keynote address to celebrate INSEAD Luxembourg Alumni's 50th anniversary on Thursday 21 March, entitled “Expansion - Evolution - Engagement”. Philippe Osch, President of INSEAD Alumni Association in Luxembourg, hosted Subi ahead of their anniversary evening celebrations. Subi Rangan is Professor of Strategy and Management at INSEAD Business School in Fontainebleau Paris, and the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Court Endowed Chair in Societal Progress. His educational background includes an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management and a PhD in political economy from Harvard. Subi's research focusses on the evolution of capitalism; how all economic actors and enterprises can integrate for better performance and progress; and he is developing a curriculum to deepen competence and character of business students and executives. In 2013 Prof. Rangan initiated the Society for Progress, a fellowship of eminent philosophers, social scientists and business leaders ( www.societyforprogress.org) He also directs INSEAD's top executive seminar AVIRA: Awareness, Vision, Imagination, Role and Action. In this conversation, we begin with a short history of capitalism. Below are some of the thoughts of Prof. Rangan discussed in this conversation. Subi speaks about the ‘iterations of capitalism': to maximise wealth for oneself, for a company and for all. From subsistence economy to bartering; how the Protestant reformation allowed the pursuit of wealth; to the work of philosopher Adam Smith to enhance welfare for all, resulting in a better standard of living for all. This paradigm required a division of labour to increase productivity and drive specialisation. We were no longer self-sufficient. Institutional theory then grew with the notion of private property rights to incentivise people to create value and the patent industry. Communism did not have this incentive alignment - and therefore failed. This burgeoning innovation and the dedication of people meant that money was made through the sale of the surplus - profits. At the end of the 19th century we have, for the first time, formal economics with people like Pareto. Who should allocate resources? Then we move to Kenneth Arrow, the mind behind modern economics, on a spontaneous, decentralised system, which can work to produce more welfare more than command and control methods. This was so far an Anglo-Saxon idea. But in the 70s and 80s we had the Asian tigers - government having a less marked hand allowing the market to flourish. This gave rise, in the 1980s, to deregulation and liberalisation. The modern economy is self regulating, self-correcting and decentralised. If this doesn't work by the invisible hand of markets, then the visible hard of regulation or government comes in. It has worked on a global scale, if the goal of the economy was to produce wealth. Absolute poverty has been reduced. However, what are the goals of the economy today? What is there beyond wealth? “More than income we are now looking at impact; more than performance we look for progress. There are new dreams for humanity. This is goal innovation.” Prof Rangan talks about the ‘Chronic dilemma of interdependence' in our interconnected world. Jürgen Habermas, a 20th century German Philosopher talks about communicative rationality. In deciding what is good, we need to talk with one another. If we are born equal then we must practice communicative rationality. Subi calls it ‘consultative morality'. Language is the way in which we can regulate interdependence, and we certainly need it to be non-violent. Adam Smith had the same idea in the theory of moral dependence. Output to outcome economy We are moving from an output centred economy to an outcome centred economy. And here, who has the power? Prof. Rangan suggests the greater the power the greater you need to be engaged with your scope of expertise. We've had regulation of power now we need to educate power. Subi believes that education should be literacy, numeracy and decency; moral and social philosophy. Consumers, investors and employees now also assess companies. He believes we need a changing definition of success - to be rich and respected. Prof. Rangan also mentions a conversation he had with a Nigerian recently who spoke about redefining what a millionaire is - not someone who has a millionaire dollars but someone who has transformed the lives of a million people. MBA - Master of Better Alternatives Subi is wonderful at breaking down ideas into bullet points and alliterative headings in order to remember things. His talk for the INSEAD Alumni of Luxembourg Anniversary was entitled ‘Expansion - Evolution - Engagement - Education'. Through this, his main themes were: (1) Wealth and wellbeing (2) Evolution in the way we allocate resources and interact with one another (3) People and planet (4) we all need to Engage at the individual level in our choices based on information and our moral identity; interest beyond self-interest (5) Educate I hope you enjoy the wisdom of Subi and the mix of economics and social philosophy in this conversation. Please do get in touch with your own views and experiences.

The Box Tops is an American rock band formed in Memphis in 1967. They are best known for the hits "The Letter", "Cry Like a Baby", "Choo Choo Train," and "Soul Deep" and are considered a major blue-eyed soul group of the period. They performed a mixture of current soul music songs by artists such as James & Bobby Purify and Clifford Curry; pop tunes such as "A Whiter Shade of Pale" by Procol Harum; and songs written by their producers, Dan Penn, Spooner Oldham, and Chips Moman. Vocalist Alex Chilton went on to front the power pop band Big Star and to launch a career as a solo artist, during which he occasionally performed songs he had sung with the Box Tops. The Box Tops' music combined elements of soul music and light pop. Their records are prime examples of the styles made popular by Moman and Penn at American Sound Studio in Memphis. Many of their lesser known Top 40 hits, including "Neon Rainbow", "I Met Her in Church", and "Sweet Cream Ladies, Forward March", are considered minor classics. As rock critic Lester Bangs wrote in a review of the group's Super Hits album, "A song like 'Soul Deep' is obvious enough, a patented commercial sound, yet within these strictures it communicates with a depth and sincerity of feeling that holds the attention and brings you back often."Bill CunninghamBorn January 23, 1950, Memphis Tennessee.Plays bass (both bass guitar and upright bass), cello, piano, and organ.Bill's father was a SUN recording artist and worked with Sam Phillips at SUN studio intermittently from 1953-61. He first recorded under the name Buddy Cunningham and later under the name Buddy Blake. Buddy was inducted into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame as the first percussionist on an Elvis Presley record. That session at SUN took place September 10, 1954 and included the following songs:‘Tomorrow Night, Blue Moon Of Kentucky, I'll Never Let You Go (Little Darlin'), Just Because, Satisfied, Good Rockin' Tonight, I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine'Musicians: Elvis Presley, Scotty Moore, and Bill Black; Doug Poindexter – guitar, Buddy Cunningham – drum soundsBill's older brother, B.B. Cunningham Jr., was a member of The Hombres and sang and co-wrote the hit ‘Let It All Hang Out.' He played bass for Jerry Lee Lewis for almost 15 years.Bill played various instruments in a number of early 1960s Memphis bands, before joining the group that eventually became The Box Tops. One of these bands, The Jynx, included Chris Bell (who later founded Big Star). Between The Jynx and The Box Tops Bill played with another Memphis group called The Jokers, which included Richard Rosebrough who later would play on a number of Big Star, Alex Chilton, and Chris Bell recordings.Bill remained a member of the Box Tops until September of 1969, when he decided to return to school to get a music degree in performance (upright bass).Though Bill virtually vanished from the pop music scene after he left the Box Tops, he rose in the ranks of classical musicians, playing in many symphony orchestras and in ballet and opera companies throughout the Midsouth while attending university. During this period he backed in performance artists as diverse as Eddy Arnold, Van Cliburn, Isaac Hayes, the Romeros (Spanish guitarists), and Dionne Warwick. For a brief period Bill became a resident of Germany and worked, studied, and traveled in many European countries.During work on his Masters Degree in music (back in the United States), Bill worked with Chris Bell at Ardent Studio, providing the string arrangement for Chris' “You And Your Sister. ” Around this period, Bill competed with numerous bassists from across the country for an opening in the White House orchestra in Washington, DC. He won and moved to Washington. In the mid to late 1970s, he played for most White House dinners, receptions, and special quest performances for Presidents Ford and Carter and for many State Department celebrations for Secretaries of State Kissinger and Vance. During this period Bill played for numerous dignitaries, including the Queens of England and Holland, as well as various heads of states from around the world. Also, during this period Bill recorded sound tracks for a number of TV specials, including some with Jim Henson and the Muppets.Throughout his classical music career he played with many of the world's best known performers and conductors. For example, Bill's last classical-music public performance was backing Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman in a White House celebration at the signing of the Camp David Accord ( the Middle East peace agreement signed by Sadat, Begin, and Carter). In 1979, Bill was studying in Philadelphia with Roger Scott, the principal bassist of the Philadelphia Philharmonic, when he decided to change professions. This shift led to a MBA (Master of Business Administration) degree in international business and to a profession that assists with U.S. bilateral and multilateral trade issues. In 1996, Bill played the principal role in reforming the original Box Tops. He played bass and shared responsibility for keyboard parts with John on the ‘Tear Off' album. Bill toured with the group from 1997-2010, holding down the bottom end on stage with his bass lines. In 2015, Bill teamed up with Gary to bring back The Box Tops' music to audiences, playing bass and sharing vocal responsibilities.

For my January self-imposed reading challenge, I chose 'The Personal MBA. Master the Art of Business' by Josh Kaufman. Here is what the author says: The Personal MBA is designed to help learn the art of business on your own terms. Instead of mortgaging your life to go to business school, it’s possible to dramatically increase your knowledge of business on your own time and with little cost – without setting foot inside a classroom. With a little time and effort, you can easily learn these skills on your own, without eye-popping tuition and student loans. Understanding the fundamental principles of business will give you essential tools you can rely on to make good decisions. My personal views are inside, enjoy the episode :) *** Josh Kaufman website: https://joshkaufman.net/ The first 20 hours -- how to learn anything | Josh Kaufman | TEDxCSU: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MgBikgcWnY The book: https://personalmba.com/ The book I am going to read in February, 'Growth Reinvented.
Finding a love for all beer and diving into homebrewing back in the ‘87, Ron has won numerous awards on the state level as well as a Gold Medal in the AHA’s National Homebrew Competition, the largest homebrewing competition in the world. Lots of great conversations and many brews slayed on this episode as we got into, not just those glorious dark brews, but butter beers, Budweiser’s guerilla tactics, and why Quaff On’s Common Necessity reminds Cowboy of Xmas. Tune in to learn more about Mr. Ron Smith and how you can attend classes and work toward getting your MBA(Master of Beer Appreciation). Many of Indy’s great brewers will tell you they got their start learning all they could from Mr. Smith. Cheers!
