How Lenovo earned desi love

Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Wednesday, December 11, 2024. This is Nelson John, let's get started. Lenovo has been quite adept at navigating the business landscape in India, avoiding the regulatory scrutiny faced by Chinese companies in India. But how? A big part of its strategy was to jump into local manufacturing in 2005, well before many others. This early start not only helped it build a solid trust base but also positioned it as a committed player in India's economic scene, not just another overseas company trying to tap into a lucrative market. Lenovo's approach to being a global brand rather than just a Chinese one has also played well for it. It has been very careful about compliance and made it a point to pay taxes diligently, which clearly sets it apart in a market where scrutiny around Chinese investments has intensified. Gulveen Aulakh takes a detailed look at the Chinese tech giant's strategy for survival in the Indian market. The longstanding friction between Shapoorji Pallonji Group and Tata Trusts continues, even after the passing of Ratan Tata. SP Group, holding an 18.4% stake in Tata Sons, aims to renegotiate its loans by using these shares as collateral to attract new investors—a move not sanctioned by Tata Trusts. Tata Sons, having transitioned to a private company in 2017, restricts share transfers without approval, a condition reinforced by the company's Articles of Association. In a mail to Mint's Varun Sood,  Siddharth Sharma, CEO of Tata Trusts, emphasized that Tata Sons shares should not be used as collateral, highlighting the restrictive nature of share transfers after the company's privatization. This stance is supported unanimously by Tata Trusts' executive committee, indicating a continuation of the group's traditional governance approach even under the new chairmanship of Noel Tata. The long-standing financial dispute involving the National Spot Exchange Ltd (NSEL) and its investors has taken a new turn. The NSEL Investor Action Group (NIAG) recently withdrew their support for a proposed one-time settlement (OTS) with 63 Moons Technologies Ltd, complicating the decade-long effort to recover investors' dues owed to investors since NSEL's collapse in 2013. Neha Joshi reports that the decision came after 63 Moons attempted to access ₹300 crore from assets that were previously attached, ostensibly for operational expenses, without a prior consultation with the NIAG. This move was perceived by the NIAG as a breach of the foundational agreements of the settlement talks, prompting them to withdraw their endorsement for the settlement offer, which initially aimed to distribute ₹1,950 crore to investors—about 42% of the total ₹4,650 crore claimed by investors. However, the NSEL Investors Forum (NIF) has claimed that it has secured the support of investors, having approximately 64.5% in value of the outstanding claims, and it is confident that it will secure the majority consent for the settlement.HMD's new 'Fusion' smartphone is stirring curiosity with its promise of modularity, primarily focusing on easy swaps for its display and back panel. Unlike fully modular phones that allow changes to core performance elements, the Fusion offers customizable back panels with specific functionalities, like an LED light ring for creators and a gaming controller, Shouvik Das explains. This level of modularity is moderate but intriguing, especially as the global regulatory environment shifts towards stronger right-to-repair laws. Modular phones have been around in various forms, like Google's ambitious but ultimately shelved Project Ara, and others like LG's G5 and Motorola's Z2, which incorporated modular aspects to enhance flexibility and potentially extend the device's lifespan. However, these products generally didn't achieve mass-market success due to high costs, limited third-party accessory support, and an overall market preference for more integrated, seamless smartphone experiences. As celebrities increasingly face the brunt of defamatory content circulated by trolls, they are turning more toward legal measures to protect their image. High-profile figures like AR Rahman, Salman Khan, and Akshay Kumar have recently threatened or initiated defamation suits against media platforms that host damaging content about them. This trend highlights a growing concern among celebrities about the unregulated nature of social media, where unchecked dissemination of content can rapidly tarnish reputations, Lata Jha reports. Legal experts point out that celebrities are especially vulnerable to defamation due to public curiosity about their personal lives. Platforms like social media amplify these issues by allowing rapid spread of unverified information, often without the traditional checks of editorial oversight. This has led to a rise in legal actions by celebrities not just in India but globally, reflecting a proactive stance against damaging allegations.

The pair discuss the fact that heavily regulated industries like health, finance & education are risk averse due to their importance, & therefore suffer from the unintended consequence of lack of creativity & human focus. They also discuss the need to flip our approach to language..."Banking has operated so far on the presumption that to help people, they need to make people financially literate. What we're explaining is that banking has to learn the language of people."Dan explains simple approaches to adopt when beginning the process of designing around people, including developing personas, scenarios & interactions to better respond to human behaviour. He explains how through extensive research, Lloyds have moved from a "customer journey" approach to a "life journey" approach to help people connect banking with relatable life moments. He also shares example of using behavioural economics in practice, including the locus of control, and how, implemented in the design of banking products, it helps people make better financial decisions.Stu & Dan discuss the similarities between health & financial wellbeing, the "goalposts" of relative progress vs absolute success & the feelings of guilt and shame associated. Dan closes with positive messages that industries are moving in the right direction towards a human centred approach & hopes that once the pandemic has gone, the financial honesty & human focus will remain. The Social DilemmaDan: website, linkedin, twitterNudgestock presentation - 1:41:54Thisismoney.co.uk articleFintech Futures article

Podcast Notes Stephen is currently working on DipTrace part libraries and templates for DRC and CAM file generation. Should have an article out next week about it. GitHub repository for DipTrace files are located here. The BGA Escape article is complete! Read it on our blog. See Figure 1. Parker finished up the USB Type-C test board. Download the files here. He is using a Molex 105450-0101 USB Type-C that is all SMD. See Figure 2. Progress on the KiCad footprints and part libraries. Check out what Dustin has done so far here. Stephen found out that KiCad uses ".pretty" as an extension format for the libraries. Parker thinks the developers thought it was good for KiCad's self esteem. Toilet seat has a scale that tells you how much your excrement weighs. Stephen's IoT toilet exists. Modular Moto Z Android phone supports DIY and RPi HAT add-ons. A modular cell phone you can buy right now as Project Ara hasn't seen any real hardware in customer hands yet. Has a SDK that allows talking to the interface. Parker asks "College is starting back up. As a Freshman Electrical Engineer what should you buy to get a leg up?". A good breadboard and jumper wires would help out in labs. Stephen and Parker will be putting together an Intro to Hardware article in the future. Special thanks to whixr over at Tymkrs for the intro and outro theme!

Google I/O 2016 Google has dabbled in the Home Theater and Home Automation arenas for quite a while - going all the way back to the Logitech Revue and Google TV in 2010, and there were a few devices before that failed experiment as well (review in Episode 452). Even with the success of the Chromecast, it still feels like Google is just toying with us, but that all may change soon. Some of the announcements out of this year's Google I/O conference are pretty exciting, and very promising. Plus, they have something called Project Ara - how can we not talk about that? Google Home Perhaps the most relevant announcement to our show and everyone listening was the Amazon Echo competitor simply called Google Home. The device itself was the big announcement, but they followed that up with an expected delivery date of later this year. However, they didn't specify a price. The man behind the project, Mario Queiroz, also happens to be the same man who launched the only other successful home product in the Google portfolio, the Chromecast. Google Home is exactly what you'd picture if you were told someone was going to launch an Echo competitor. It's a small speaker you plug into the wall with always-listening, far-field microphones that can hear you from across the room. Just like the Echo, Google Home will answer your questions, play your music, and control some of your home automation components. Of course Google will tell you that their device is better at most of those things than the Amazon device, but they have to say that. While the Echo isn't great at multi-room, Google Home is designed with multiple rooms and speakers in mind from the start. It's built on the Cast standard, so you can talk to any speaker and tell it to play music on other speakers, just like you can with Google Cast Audio. Not sure if it'll support synchronized music in multiple rooms, but if it doesn't at launch, we can't imagine it'll be too far off. Google has said they don't plan to be as open a platform and the Amazon Echo, so you can expect less home automation devices to work with it. Their focus is on quality, not quantity. Queiroz made the statement that other platforms may support more devices, but when you actually try to use them, it doesn't really work all that well. We cannot confirm nor deny that claim, but Google's spin on less device support is that each home automation component that is integrated with Google Home will behave just as you'd expect. That's a tall order, but if it is true, it'll be pretty awesome (and probably a historical first). Google Assistant Google Now is getting an upgrade to the new Google Assistant in an effort to take on the Siri, Cortana and Alexa's of the world. The uniques feature that sets Google Assistant apart from the rest is the ability to remember prior questions and apply context to new questions. For example, you could say something like “show me what action movies are playing in my area” followed by a statement like “I'm a fan of anything with vampires in it” to further narrow the search. That sounds more intuitive than most of the digital assistants on the market right now. And could have a nice tie-in with voice controlled home automation. Google Assistant on your Google Home device? That could be pretty sweet. Daydream Farewell Android VR, hello Google Daydream. Quite similar in approach to Google Cardboard, Daydream is built by Google, but it's up to the developers to create the apps, games and experiences that really make it compelling for consumers.  At Google I/O, they showed off sketches of a reference VR headset and a remote reminiscent of the Nintendo Wii, that together will provide motion-controlled gaming and simple user interface navigation while using the Daydream headset. Google also announced that several phones that are "Daydream-compatible" from companies like HTC and Samsung should be hitting store shelves later this year. Project Ara So what is Project Ara?  For those who don't know, it's actually pretty cool. The idea is a totally modular cell phone, basically the marriage of cell phones and legos. Your phone, instead of being one solid piece of electronics, is a bunch of smaller pieces of electronics your put together, where each of the small pieces is replaceable. You could buy a phone, which is basically all the parts you need pre-assembled, or just go out and buy the parts you want and build your own. For anyone who has seen a commercial about a new phone with a super awesome camera, or crazy long battery life, or a killer screen and wished your phone, the one you just bought six months ago, was that cool, Project Ara solves that for you. Want to add a better camera? Go for it, just replace that module and you're set. No reason to replace the whole phone. Or want to add a better battery, or a louder speaker? Go for it. That's pretty freakin' cool. At the I/O conference, Google announced that Project Ara is coming out of the cool, futuristic idea phase and will be making it into your hands in the very near future.  The technology will release to developers in the Fall of 2016 with a consumer release planned in the Spring of 2017. They're giving plenty of time between the developer release and the consumer release to make sure they have a good idea of what kinds of modules developers will want to create and what kind of modules consumers will want to buy. But bottom line the Google / Lego phone concept could be on store shelves in less than a year.

It may have only been a handful of days since we last came to you with some podcast action, but we've got a lot to discuss, including a stupid-slim iPhone, some next-gen rumors from Google, and a cold, hard look at exactly what Microsoft thinks it's doing over in Window 10 Mobile-land. SCOTTeVEST is known for something very straightforward: making the best pockets in the world. Specialists in functional fashion for over 15 years, SCOTTeVEST designs multi-pocket clothing that lets you carry and use all of your gadgets and essentials in a single item. From smartphones to tablets to wallets, keys, sunglasses and more, SCOTTeVEST's clothing line has you covered with designated pockets for every carryable you can conceive of, distributed evenly so you stay balanced, and even marked with icons so you can remember what goes where. And if you forget to slap a flap shut or zip a zipper, SCOTTeVEST has you covered with pockets designed to hold on to your gadgets even if you forget to close them. Some pockets are even made of transparent touch fabric, allowing you to use your devices without ever taking them out. This is NASA-level stuff, right here. If you're tired of doing "the gadget dance," fumbling from pocket to pocket hunting for your devices, do yourself a favor: pay SCOTTeVEST a visit. News (00:05:37) 2016 Moto X leaks again, shows off what appears to be an internal heat pipe for cooling. Google's next messaging app could be chock full of interactive chatbots. Forget two-factor authentication: what if you never had to enter your Google password again? Google Play would love to save you some cash on all sorts of apps and media this holiday season. ZTE's all "check out my mid-range phablet action with this Axon Max biz, while Samsung fires back with an "I can do that too: Galaxy A9 - recognize!" of its own. Project Ara, eat your heart out: the Fairphone 2 is here, and it's finally shipping. With as long as Microsoft had to work n Windows 10 Mobile, why does it still feel like users are participants in a beta test? But dammit if its fans aren't loyal to it. Microsoft goes full taksies backsies with Android “Hey Cortana” hotword support. Why didn't the Lumia 950 look as good as these unofficial Lumia 650 renders? 2016's most prolific smartphone feature could be 3D Touch-like tech. Apple Music could start sounding a bit better to the ears of you audiophiles, but what would it look like if your iPhone 7 headphone options really went Lightning-only? Ačkoliv se na tento jubilejní díl nyní díváte klasicky ze záznamu, trochu potají jsme dnes poprvé experimentovali také s živým přenosem, což je koncept, se kterým mobilecast už na začátku vznikal. Tematicky jsme dnes s Honzou, Petrem a Vojtou zabrousili do toho nejzajímavějšího z roku 2014 a toho, na co se nejvíce těšíme v roce právě začínajícím.

The "flagship killer" that demands that you "NEVER SETTLE" breaks cover. The pioneer of the modern mobile browser shares his story. And at long last, Microsoft and Nokia finally consummate their love. We could have a feature segment, but with news this hot, do we really need one? Not with a guest like Stefan Constantinescu of TabDump to bring some flavor (and profanity) to the proceedings, that's for sure. A word on the language of this episode: we've recently ditched the "Clean" content rating that's been with us from the start of the Weekly, trading it in for Apple's ominous "Explicit" tag that makes us sound like the hardest podcasters ever to come out of Detroit. This change was made for a variety of reasons, which we may explain in depth at a later date. Rest assured that it's not our intent to turn the podcast into a sailor bar: we'll still be keeping a close eye on our tongues, but we'll no longer be bleeping the occasional cuss. Be sure to let us know what you think of this change in the comments! All this, plus six of your best reader mail submissions await you on episode 093 of the Pocketnow Weekly! So fire up your favorite podcast app and get to downloading: the Flagship Killer is coming, and you know what that means. (Actually, do you? Screeners welcome a new guest host to the team while Josh plays hooky…apparently having a baby takes precedence over movie talk with his Screener pals. We see how it is, Josh. Without the balance of Josh’s contrary perspectives, will the Screeners be able to restrain their positivity about the latest installment from the Marvel universe? We shall find out.CAN THE MEDIAS KEEP US ENTERTAINED?We begin with the question that is surely on the minds of all Screeners podcast listeners… what else are these people doing to entertain themselves in the world of media? Our answers might shock you… or perhaps not.Chad informs the Screeners that movie theaters are losing their younger demographics of viewers and they are blaming those newfangled mobile devices! How dare anyone suggest that the industry may have to adapt?Next up, it appears that NBC has completely run out of imaginative ideas and will be outsourcing their show writing to anyone with a computer and a creative concept! Will one of the Screeners be the next big thing on NBC?Chris can’t let an episode go by without drawing our attention back to our mobile devices. The Screeners discuss Google’s new Project Ara, a modular smart phone (aka: a “Lego-lover’s pipe dream”).AMERICA’S FAVORITE HEROCaptain America: The Winter Soldier – is this one of the best Marvel superhero films of all time? Or is it just another in a long line of lackluster flicks that leave us less and less entertained? Find out which Screeners can still find the magic, and which ones are beginning to suffer from superhero burnout. The Mailbag Lives! And Josh returns from the delivery room! (Actually we just recorded this segment last week. But it’s still good to have his happy, optimistic voice join the conversation.)The majority of Screeners listeners are a reticent lot so far, but we do still get a question every now and then. For this episode, fans have posed some real doozies (or not, depending on who’s answering). We’ll find out what movie(s) each Screener would remake if they had the chance, get a sampling of their favorite books of all time, and hear about some TV shows that may be past their prime, but that come highly recommended by our hosts. Thanks to Mike, Maria, and Samantha for the questions; as for the rest of you (you know who you are), if you ever have a nagging curiosity, idle musing, or burning rage that you want to let us know about, we have an email address, Facebook page, and comments section. Where findest one all these wondrous resources, you may ask? You’ll have to listen to the podcast to find out!
