Ordinary citizens are solving war crimes with Google Maps and Twitter. Here, Bellingcat's Eliot Higgins reveals how anyone can become a digital detective!Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1192What We Discuss with Eliot Higgins:Bellingcat, the investigative journalism group founded by Eliot Higgins, pioneered open source investigations using publicly available data — social media posts, satellite imagery, and online databases — to uncover war crimes, assassinations, and state-level deception that traditional journalism missed.Bellingcat's techniques include geolocation (matching video backgrounds to satellite imagery), chronolocation (using shadows to determine time), and "fingerprinting" military equipment by unique damage patterns to track movements across borders.Bellingcat's major investigations exposed Russian involvement in MH17 downing, identified GRU agents in Skripal poisoning through passport/phone metadata, and mapped entire Russian military units from soldiers' social media posts during Ukraine operations.Bellingcat faces serious threats — Russian surveillance, hacking attempts, disinformation campaigns, and even kidnapping plots — while being falsely labeled as CIA fronts to discredit its independent verification work.Anyone can learn open source investigation through Bellingcat's free resources, Discord community of 40,000 members, YouTube tutorials, and volunteer programs — proving that citizen journalism can hold powerful actors accountable. And much more...And if you're still game to support us, please leave a review here — even one sentence helps! Welcome back to Crying In My Car, a podcast for teachers! Our hosts Devin Siebold and James Yon are revealing a huge bomb shell, did you know that our world map can't be trusted!? They also sifted through the absolute goldmine for academic anecdotes, Reddit; and lets just say, you would never believe the stories they uncovered there. Finally, are we robbing kids of the academic adventure of their lives by not taking them to museums anymore? First we unravel the biggest cartographical conspiracy of our generation. We all know the world map because we all passed first grade geography, but are these maps to be trusted? Apparently not! Tune in to find out exactly how we've all been lied to for all these years! Then our hosts searched the deep parts of reddit, where we found a story of a student who has missed a whopping 140 days of school, but surprisingly still might pass. Well for once, the admin is backing the teacher in holding back this irresponsible student. We hope that this will start a trend of schools finally holding people accountable for their actions. Finally we all remember the indescribable joy of going on a field trip to a museum as a kid. This is what spanked Devin's love for history and eventually led to him being a teacher. All this being said however, with the rise in technology, we feel schools are neglecting giving these kids these valuable educational experiences. Is this good, or are we robbing them of a life changing academic adventure, tune in to hear our take. This week, we dive into the dark hallways and shadowy corners of America's most haunted schools just as students head back to class. We explore two particularly eerie Schools: Pocatello High School in Idaho, where urban legends tell of a tragic suicide pact from the 1940s-50s that left one girl hanging from the top lockers (which were subsequently removed), and a ghostly wet child who supposedly drowned in the school's former pool. The campus is also known for phantom piano music echoing through an empty auditorium and unsettling sounds from the theater's changing rooms. Then we discuss the much more historically documented El Paso High School in Texas, built in 1916 over underground tunnels that once served as a morgue during the Spanish flu epidemic. With alleged deaths on campus, sealed-off rooms discovered years later, and even a mysterious figure appearing in a 1985 school photograph, this institution has a deeply troubling past. We also share two compelling anonymous stories from Reddit - one involving a Catholic preschool next to an 1800s cemetery where staff regularly encounter a spirit they call "Mary," and another from an Ohio behavioral school with such intense paranormal activity that it's now being demolished. Today we are celebrating a psychiatrist who opened a private practice and paid off her student loans only a few years out of residency. She said she is very debt averse and poured every dollar she could to crushing the loans. Not only did she tackle her loans but she also opened a private practice at the same time. She wanted to provide the highest quality of care for her patience and believed private practice was the best way to do that. She also wanted the freedom and flexibility that comes from working for herself. Opening a private practice was scary but she never doubted her decision and has been super successful. Thinking LSAT Show NotesIn preparation for test week, Ben and Nathan remind students of a foundational piece of advice: treat the official test exactly like you would any other practice test. They apply that advice to everything from testing location decisions to your test week study plan. Study with our Free PlanDownload our iOS appWatch Episode 518 on YouTube0:25 – TicketmastersReddit is full of students panicking about unavailable test center seats due to a 50% increase in August registrations. Demon team members weigh in on the remote vs. in-person testing debate, with Ben and Nathan generally siding with online testing. While there can be proctor issues, they note that this isn't a universal problem and argue that horror stories are often amplified on Reddit while the smooth administrations go unnoticed. 7:36 – Eliminating 4 out of 5 Demon student Tom highlights a valuable LSAT skill: confidently eliminating four answers even if you're unsure why the fifth is right. Ben and Nathan explain the two paths to the correct answer—positive identification or conclusive elimination. When unsure of why a correct answer solves the problem, be sure to learn from that question in review, even if you get the question right.13:12 – The Week Before?Harry asks how to prepare in the final week before his test. The guys say to keep doing exactly what's worked. They caution that even asking this question suggests Harry may be treating the official test differently from practice. Planning to use all five attempts reduces the pressure of any one test. 19:50 – LSAT Demon Dashboard RatingsA listener asks about the purpose behind the Demon's dashboard ratings and how to utilize them effectively. Ben and Nathan explain that there were two primary goals: motivation and more immediate feedback. They emphasize that rating changes aren't always linear, and minor drops shouldn't be discouraging.24:40 – Video Explanations for RCConnor wonders if he should still review RC videos when he got everything right. Ben and Nathan say yes—especially if the passage felt confusing or required guesswork. Watching how teachers read can improve your process, not just your accuracy.28:32 – Transcript Petition SuccessMegan shares how she successfully petitioned to remove bad grades from her transcript. Ben and Nathan read the letter she used and suggested others in similar situations should try this approach. They note that smart, respectful advocacy can yield real results.40:28 – Applying BroadlyA student recounts accepting a partial scholarship and still facing six-figure debt. Ben and Nathan stress that 80% of law students receive scholarships and that partial offers can still lead to heavy debt burdens. Applicants should apply broadly and reject the idea that a “generous” offer is good enough if it means massive loans.Check out the LSAT Demon Scholarship Estimator47:00 - Word of the Week - Askance“The judge also looked askance at Anthropic's acknowledgement that it had turned to downloading pirated books in order to save time and money in building its AI models.”Get caught up with our Word of the Week library.

In this week's episode, we're returning from our hiatus (Pye-atus?) with a bit of a switcheroo: instead of "Sinners" which we will get back to, I promise, we're talking shitty Italian horror and may well continue to do so for the next couple of weeks while our hearts are still so tender. It's the 1989 Michele Soavi vehicle "The Church." Special topics for your consideration include: the delights of a completely plotless Italian film, creeps being creepy, a PSA about butt plugs, and the concept of being a bit nicer to your 14 year old daughter at any point but especially when you're Dario Argento. We've done a million Italian movies, so just search the archives for Dario Argento or Lucio Fulci or Mario Bava and you're sure to be delighted. The regular lineup of links! LAX serves more than 80 million passengers per year... and it's terrible. Dingy, crowded, inefficient, slow - can this airport possibly serve as a beacon for the world as L.A. hosts the World Cup, Super Bowl, and 2028 Olympics? The good news is that a $30 billion transformation is in progress, but will it be enough to avoid the pratfalls of flying in what Reddit calls "a pathetic dump of an airport?" In short, can LAX be fixed?
For the first time ever in Ringer's Philly Special history, Sheil, Ben, and Cliff were actually in the same room and recorded a pod. Solak was in town for Eagles training camp and brought some observations (04:00). How will the Eagles perform on defense compared to last season with the loss of so many vets on that side of the ball (07:49)? The guys then dive into the Cam Newton–Jalen Hurts convo and why it has so many people riled up (23:22). Is Reddit the most overlooked - and potentially most powerful - marketing platform for eCommerce brands today? This week, I'm joined by my friend Danny Kirk, founder of ReddiReach, to explore the high-risk, high-reward nature of Reddit marketing, why it's different from any other platform, and how generative AI is reshaping how people find and trust brands. Listen in as we talk about how to market on Reddit without getting roasted, how LLMs are changing search and discovery (and what you can do about it), and why Danny's company is betting big on GEO - Generative Engine Optimization. We also dive into Danny's philosophy on productivity, managing team growth, and choosing the right business size for your goals. If you've ever wondered how to build a fulfilling business that doesn't eat your life, this one's for you.
