Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to break box office records, after having the biggest U.S. opening weekend in history. Tonya Mosley talks with the film's director, Destin Daniel Cretton. Long before Marvel, he worked in a group home for at-risk teens. He says it's an experience that shaped everything he's made since then, and became the movie Short Term 12.Also, we hear from Harriet Clark. She was a baby when her mother was a getaway driver of a robbery of a Brink's truck in 1981. The robbers were members of a radical offshoot of the Weather Underground and the Black Panthers. For 37 years, Clark spent Saturdays visiting her mother in prison. “She figured out how to mother me in some of the most difficult conditions possible,” Clark tells Terry Gross. Her novel, The Hill, draws on her experience visiting her mother in prison. Spider-Man: Brand New Day leaves us with one HUGE question: Does Ned actually remember Peter Parker? In the movie's final moments, Peter finally reintroduces himself to his old best friend — and their secret handshake seems to unlock something in Ned's memory. But is he actually remembering Peter, or has he simply figured out that Peter is Spider-Man? Today J is diving into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and breaking down all the clues, from Ned's suspiciously familiar knowledge of Spider-Man to his history with magic, MJ's lingering instincts, and one VERY important encounter with the Hulk that may prove Doctor Strange's spell has some major loopholes. Because if Ned can remember Peter... maybe MJ can too. #SpiderMan #Marvel #MCU

Fresh back from Chicago, this week Ian and Josh relive their trip to the 46th National Sports Collectors Convention, with Keith and Jason firing in questions from home. It's a full National debrief, from the scale of the show and the crush of the crowds to the way the big booths turned floor space into proper hobby theatre. Think live breaks, giveaways, custom cards, free slabs, app sign-ups, and enough collector temptation to test even the strongest willpower. Was there much non-sports to be found? Ian and Josh go hunting beyond the sports tables, from Pokémon, One Piece, Marvel, and DC to sealed boxes, autos, vintage oddities, and the Star Wars-heavy Heritage Auctions display. We also get into show logistics, favourite moments, Chicago food, Target restocks, Lollapalooza chaos, and why The National is as much about people, networking, and industry handshakes as it is about buying cardboard.BIG love to the Upper Deck team and to all who we met at the show.Plus, Jason signs off from regular podcast duties with a heartfelt farewell. Today on The Treehouse Show, we've got a couple of Reddit relationship disasters that raise some serious questions about what your significant other really needs to know about your past.First, a woman thinks her boyfriend is probably going to leave her after she got drunk and admitted to a co-worker that she once got pregnant after hooking up with a guy on the bathroom floor of a club. Her boyfriend heard the confession, and now she's wondering if she just destroyed her relationship. Is he overreacting—or did she reveal something he has every right to care about? Then we've got a wife who's furious after finding out her husband slept with his sister. Before you call the police, there's a catch—and somehow we're actually siding with the husband on this one.Celebrity birthdays take us down another rabbit hole as we talk Robert Downey Jr., Tom Holland, Hollywood backend points, and how some actors can make an absolute fortune after a movie leaves theaters.Plus, Trey explains why he thinks the all-female fight scene in Avengers: Endgame was completely unnecessary, and somehow we wind up remembering the classic TV series Emergency!Reddit relationship drama, Marvel arguments, Hollywood money, and old-school television. Just another day in The Treehouse Show.About the show:Leave your worries outside and join Dan O'Malley, Trey Trenholm, and their hilarious guests for laughs about funny news and viral stories with ridiculous commentary inside the Treehouse Show.

But if we are talking about using your Wii Remote to aim a virtual gun, I have to give the award for best usage to Resident Evil 4 on the Wii and of course the Metroid Prime Trilogy. Shooting zombies or space pirates never felt so good!! But while all of these are some of the best of the best of the motion control era of gaming, my true favorite lies within a much more lesser known title found on the 3DS (and I think PS Vita) made by Drinkbox Studios. That game is Severed--a game about battling your way through a purgatory-like dreamworld full of demons that you slice and dice with a sword using your stylus! The game's main themes are dealing with trauma, revenge, and loss. And of course, it all ends with acceptance.

Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all your favorite fictional universes.Marvel Studios appears to have found the leader of its new mutant team, as Deadline reported last week that Heartstopper and Warfare star Kit Connor has landed the role of Scott Summers, better known as Cyclops, in the future MCU X-Men film. Sources say Connor went through much the same process as Samara Weaving, who was attached as Emma Frost the week prior, meeting with Schreier and Marvel president Kevin Feige alongside a group of candidates who tested after the July 4th holiday before the studio settled on him. Neither Marvel nor Connor has confirmed the casting, and the film, written by Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and The Bear co-creator Joanna Calo, still has no release date. Cyclops has been played on screen before by James Marsden and Tye Sheridan, with Marsden set to reprise the role in December's Avengers: Doomsday. Sony and Marvel Studios' Spider-Man: Brand New Day crossed the one-billion-dollar mark overseas in just twelve days of release, making it the second-fastest film ever to reach that number abroad behind Avengers: Endgame. The Destin Daniel Cretton film now stands at $1.67 billion worldwide, split between $654.3 million domestically and $1.013 billion internationally, which makes it the twelfth highest-grossing movie of all time and only the sixteenth ever to clear a billion in foreign markets alone. Universal had a milestone of its own to celebrate, as Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey passed $1.1 billion worldwide to become the highest-grossing film of his career ahead of The Dark Knight Rises, while also becoming the biggest IMAX release ever with $289 million, and it still has China to open on Friday. James Gunn spent part of a Threads session last week putting down one of the most persistent rumors surrounding Matt Reeves' Batman trilogy, telling a fan who asked whether The Batman Part III was being filmed simultaneously with Part II simply, “I can deny.” The theory had gained steam over years of delays, most recently when a redesigned Part II logo appeared to work a Roman numeral III into the artwork, and it offered fans a tidy explanation for why the sequel has taken so long to arrive. In reality, Part II only began principal photography in London in June, and Warner Bros. has already pushed the film from October 2027 to February 18, 2028. Sony and Nintendo's live-action The Legend of Zelda has cast Australian actor Uli Latukefu as Ganondorf under a multi-picture deal, with Severance's Dichen Lachman playing Impa and The Handmaid's Tale's Yvonne Strahovski reported as a queen character. The late Sam Neill also filmed an undisclosed role before his death on July 13, marking one of the final screen performances of his career.Gareth Edwards has exited Universal and Amblin's untitled Jurassic World Rebirth sequel over creative differences, with the studios now searching for a replacement; David Koepp's script is finished and Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey are all still expected back for a 2027 shoot.A24 released the full trailer for Primetime, the Lance Oppenheim drama that Robert Pattinson produces and stars in as To Catch a Predator host Chris Hansen, in theaters September 25.Lionsgate has confirmed that Michael 2 is targeting a production start toward the end of this year or in early 2027, with the sequel to this year's Michael Jackson biopic aiming for a 2028 release.Lionsgate is also developing a new Leprechaun film written by horror veterans Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, reviving a franchise that ran eight movies between 1993 and 2018.Nicholas Hoult has been cast in season 2 of HBO's Harry Potter series as Gilderoy Lockhart, a major character in The Chamber of Secrets that was portrayed by Kenneth Branagh in the 2002 film adaptation.
The Superhero Show #634Fantastic Four: Johnny Storm's Flame On RapThe Superhero Show — Johnny Storm's Flame On RapThis week, The Superhero Show dives into one of the silliest, strangest, and most entertaining episodes yet from the 1994 Fantastic Four animated series: Episode 1.11, “Mole Man.” The hosts go into the episode already excited to talk about its reputation for being wonderfully ridiculous, but there is one moment they have been especially looking forward to: Johnny Storm's infamous “Flame On Rap.”Before getting to the rap, however, the hosts break down the introduction of Mole Man, his hilariously elaborate plan to destroy famous landmarks around the world, and his ultimate goal of bringing the entire surface world down into his underground kingdom. From Mole Man's appearance to his costume to his master plan, the hosts find almost every aspect of the character endlessly entertaining. Then comes the moment they've been waiting for—the Flame On Rap. The hosts dive into the history behind the musical number, including the voice actor's desire to use the song as a way to break into the music industry. They discuss the production, the amount of work that apparently went into creating the song, and whether the finished product actually has what it takes to launch Johnny Storm into the music business.Flame On Rap: Mole Man Wants the World UndergroundThe hosts begin their recap with the introduction of Mole Man and his absolutely ridiculous master plan.Mole Man has decided that the best way to conquer the world is to bring the surface world down to him. His scheme begins with targeting famous landmarks around the globe, including the pyramids and England's Parliament. Eventually, his plan escalates toward his ultimate target: the White House. The hosts have an absolute blast discussing the sheer absurdity of the plan. They break down how Mole Man believes that destroying the world's most recognizable landmarks will eventually allow him to bring the entire surface civilization underground, where he can finally rule the world. It's a plan that is both completely nonsensical and perfectly suited to the tone of a 1990s superhero cartoon.Johnny Storm's Flame On Rap: Meet Mole ManThe hosts spend plenty of time discussing Mole Man himself, and they quickly discover that there is almost nothing about the character they don't find entertaining. From his strange appearance and oversized costume to his dramatic personality and bizarre ambitions, Mole Man feels like the perfect villain for an episode this silly. The hosts discuss how the animated series takes a traditionally serious Fantastic Four villain and pushes his ridiculous qualities to the absolute maximum. They also examine how Mole Man's personality fits into the larger world of the series and why his completely over-the-top presentation makes him such a memorable character.Johnny Storm's Flame On Rap: The World's Landmarks Are Under AttackThe hosts then walk through Mole Man's increasingly ridiculous campaign against the surface world. The destruction of famous landmarks gives the Fantastic Four plenty of opportunities to chase Mole Man around the globe while simultaneously demonstrating just how massive his plan has become. The hosts discuss the escalating stakes while laughing at the idea that Mole Man's master plan essentially boils down to:“If I can't live on the surface, I'll just bring the surface down to me.”It's the kind of wonderfully strange logic that makes the episode so much fun to revisit.Flame On Rap: Johnny Storm Takes the MicThen comes the moment everyone has been waiting for: the Flame On Rap.Some of the hosts had already seen clips of Johnny Storm's musical performance before watching the episode, so they were especially excited to finally experience the full thing in context. The hosts break down the rap itself, discussing the lyrics, delivery, animation, music, and overall production. They are fascinated by the story behind the song, particularly the fact that Johnny Storm's voice actor wanted to use the performance as an opportunity to break into the music industry. That revelation leads to a hilarious discussion about just how seriously the production appears to have taken this seemingly random cartoon rap.Flame On Rap: Was Johnny Storm About to Become a Pop Star? The hosts dig deeper into the amount of effort that went into creating the Flame On Rap and discuss how unusual it is to see something like this included in a Fantastic Four cartoon. They consider whether the song was simply a fun gimmick for the episode or whether there was genuinely an attempt to turn Johnny Storm into a music star. The hosts analyze the production quality and performance while comparing it to the kinds of promotional music and cartoon tie-ins that were common during the 1990s.Even if Johnny never becomes Marvel's next great rapper, the hosts agree that the Flame On Rap is one of the most memorable moments the series has produced so far.Flame On Rap: The Perfectly Silly Fantastic Four EpisodeAs the hosts wrap up their discussion, they reflect on just how much fun they had watching “Mole Man.”After some of the more serious and complicated stories earlier in the season, this episode gives the hosts an opportunity to simply enjoy the cartoon for what it is. Mole Man's ridiculous plan, his bizarre appearance, the destruction of famous landmarks, and Johnny Storm suddenly becoming a rapper combine to create an episode that feels like a celebration of everything wonderfully strange about 1990s animation. The hosts agree that sometimes an episode doesn't need to be particularly deep or sophisticated to be incredibly entertaining.Final Thoughts — Johnny Storm's Flame On RapBy the end of Flame On Rap, The Superhero Show has had exactly the kind of experience they were hoping for: a completely ridiculous Fantastic Four episode that gave them plenty to laugh about and plenty to discuss. Mole Man's bizarre plan to bring the world underground is entertaining enough on its own, but Johnny Storm's Flame On Rap takes the episode to another level.Between the strange villain, the outrageous plot, the unexpected musical number, and the fascinating story behind its production, “Mole Man” proves to be one of the most purely fun episodes of the series so far. And after finally getting to experience the full Flame On Rap, the hosts can confidently say that Johnny Storm may have missed his calling as a 1990s music sensation. Are You a Research Nerd Who's Looking For More? Here are some links for all your research wants and needs!1994 Fantastic Four Animated SeriesRyan North's Fantastic FourJoin the discussions online! 1994 Fantastic Four Animated Series, Ryan North's Fantastic FourCatch Up On Past Episodes!Missed any of our past episodes? Send us a Question!REBROADCAST MOVIE DISCUSSION: Melvin & Dan can only agree on one thing: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is, in fact, a Marvel movie. To focus their attention, Melvin proposes four ambitions that he feels will make-or-break the film for audience members. (originally released November 16th, 2022)Topics:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 44-minutes discussing Kevin Conroy's passing, Video Rental store nostalgia, and media curation (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) Melvin liked that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever had a somewhat self-serious profile as opposed to the more flippant, light sensibilities of other Marvel fare. However, Melvin has four headers - ambitions - that he observed within Black Panther: Wakanda Forever that he felt prevented him from "buying in" to the fiction of the film but may actually be beneficial qualities to certain audience members. His first point covers the film's global stage for a political drama between potentially warring counties. His second point covers the personal character stories within the film. A brief aside from the points, Melvin and Daniel agree: the suits at the end of the movie aren't that good. Melvin's third point has to do with the film's metatextual pairing of T'Challa's fictional death and Chadwick Boseman's real-life death. Melvin's final point covers what he would consider inefficient pacing, such as scenes clearly setting up future movies, or scenes having only one purpose at a time rather than being dynamic in detail.
