Andrew had heard about Barry intermittently for nearly ten years before finally meeting him in 1997 at Barry's country home north of Byron Bay, where Andrew had been teaching nearby. Their first encounter was warm and respectful, prompted by Andrew's long-standing curiosity about this enigmatic teacher. When they met again in 1998, Andrew questioned Barry closely and intelligently about his teaching on love between man and woman.Barry Long presents the loving union of man and woman as a spiritual path through which an inner realisation of God may be embodied in existence. He distinguishes making love from sex, describing sex as driven by excitement, fantasy, emotional need and self-interest, while true lovemaking requires presence in the body, surrender of personal desire and the intention to love rather than to obtain pleasure. Absolute honesty between partners is essential: both must expose resentment, emotional projection, sexual selfishness and the subtle ways they undermine one another, so that the ego gradually loses its authority. Barry also distinguishes between realising God inwardly, beyond existence, and realising God in existence through love, with man and woman understood as different but complementary expressions of the divine.Speaking as a self-described Western tantric master, Barry presses that such teaching must be lived, embodied and communicated openly, without secrecy, exploitation or abuse. The other way is of course with exercise. The traditional view on this of calories in vs calories out has led to a distorted view of how it works. It is not a literal equation you can balance - eat 100 calories, and burn off 150. You CANNOT burn off the cake/chips/alcohol!The 2 approaches should be considered as 2 parts that work together but to keep things simple and bust some myths in a way that's easier to track we are tackling them one at a time.In this episode we are talking about moving your body, which is kind of our speciality!Exercise is such a great way to create a calorie deficit because you get the opportunity to BUILD yourself a new body. The difference between someone who exercises 3 times a week and one who can hardly manage once a week is very unlikely to be motivation. But that is what we are told, because the world likes to make us feel like we are the problem.Procrastination compounds feelings of self doubt and lack of self belief - every time you procrastinate on your workout you increase the feelings of doubt about whether you are worth it, can afford it, have time for it, should be doing it. Procrastination is also a rebellion, against the things we don't want to do! The problem? Bunthorne's artistic ways are all just an act to attract women to him–he doesn't even like poetry! Besides, Patience is in love with her childhood sweetheart, who happens to be a real poet named Archibald Grosvenor, but feels she cannot marry him because he is just too perfect. In the meantime, the serious (and decidedly non-poetic) platoon of Heavy Dragoon Guards that were meant to marry the village maidens find themselves dismayed and perplexed by their sudden loss of prospects. One of Gilbert & Sullivan's most successful shows, Patience is a rollicking satire that pits the straight-laced ideals of the Victorian era against the passions and indulgences of the 1870s Aesthetic Movement, ridiculing each side of the spectrum.

Bugonia is a remake of a 2003 Southern Koren film called Save the Green Planet! directed by Jang Joon-hwan. Human beings are attached not to life but to living — to the mortal body, to possessions, relationships, and the structures of the world — and that this attachment makes us worship death rather than realise the immortal life that we are. Barry says that when tragedy strikes, especially in public events of mass death, most people are not grieving life itself but reacting to the shock of their own mortality reflected back at them. Against this, Barry says – life is one, universal, and undying – and that real understanding begins when a person stops identifying so completely with the fragile conditions of living and starts acknowledging life directly, moment by moment, with gratitude.Barry offers a fierce critique of civilisation, religion, war, and human nature in the wake of September 11. Barry rejects the idea of any 'holy war' or of God being on one side against another, and says the violence of the world is the expression of collective human nature unfolding through history. He portrays modern civilisation as both protective and deadening: it comforts us, but distances us from life, so that only shock and tragedy briefly bring people back into immediacy and truth. His practical emphasis is not political hope but inward detachment — less belief, less fearful thinking, less dependence on certainty — and a deeper recognition that while living is unstable and perishable, life itself remains untouched.'We are coming to the end of our civilization. Barry draws a sharp distinction between sex and love: true love, especially between devoted partners, travels down into the subconscious and disturbs the past, bringing up old doubt, heartbreak, conditioning, and stored emotional patterns so they can be seen rather than lived as present reality. He says the right response is stillness—recognising what rises as past unreality—so love can do its work and lead to increasing detachment from feelings and eventual freedom. Sex, by contrast, may satisfy present desire but it disturbs the emotions in a way that produces cycles of excitement and depression. Sex is a drug — and leads to restlessness rather than settled love. Barry describes the beauty of man and woman disappearing into each other through love, not the mind's sexual excitement.Barry then speaks of the watcher or the witness in everyone — utterly uninvolved, always present— whose deepest point is the Lord, and reads letters describing realizations of pristine stillness, ordinariness, and the sense of being nothing behind all appearances.
