Can Smart Thermostats save you money on energy bills? Temperatures are falling and conversations are already turning to whether or not the heating has been turned on! The "Green New Deal" calls for us to replace all existent technical instrumentalities with networked computer-controlled systems dependent upon a centrally-controlled electrical power grid. If we let these would-be Messiahs have their way, we will not be able to heat or light our homes, buy or sell, travel or even survive without their approval. We dare not give up our control over what Marx called "the means of production". Wondering how to stay warm and lower your energy bills during the winter months? It's no secret that energy prices are soaring in the UK and we're getting closer to the coldest months of the year, so that's a common concern. The good news is that now is the perfect time to learn a few tricks to reduce energy costs at home. Despite what many people think, it's possible to stay warm and still keep your energy bills low in winter. Want to know how? Continue reading to discover the best ways to keep your home warm while saving money on your energy bills! Best Tips to Stay Warm & Lower Your Energy Bills This Winter As the weather gets colder, people tend to use more electricity to warm up their homes. If you don't learn how to use energy efficiently, you'll spend a lot of money trying to stay warm during the winter months. But it doesn't have to be this way. You can stay warm, maintain a comfortable temperature in your house, and keep your electricity bills in check. Here are some of the quickest and easiest ways to save money on energy bills: Turn the Thermostat Down Yes, you read that right. The easiest way to reduce your energy costs is to lower the temperature in your home. But how will you stay warm then? Don't worry, you could turn the temperature down by just one degree and see if you feel comfortable with this change. You can repeat this process until you find the right temperature for you and your family. And more importantly, don't forget to adjust the temperature when you're going out to cut energy use and keep your energy bills under control. Lowering the thermostat by one degree can help you save roughly £90 a year! Stay Warm with Sweaters and Socks When you go outside in cold weather, you dress in layers to stay warm, right? Well, you could do something similar when you're at home too. For example, opt for a comfy jumper, sweatpants, and wool socks to keep your body warm. Cuddle up in a blanket and set the mood for a relaxing winter night! This energy-saving tip will help you set your thermostat as low as comfortably possible in the winter and reduce your energy bills. Draught-proof Windows and Doors A clever way to stay warm and keep your energy bills low in winter is to draught-proof your house. With this simple action, you'll need less energy to heat your home. So, this is one of the easiest ways to save energy and money! Make sure to block up unwanted gaps that let warm air out, such as the edges of windows, doors, and loft hatches. This also includes keyholes, spaces between floorboards, letterboxes, and open fireplaces. Switch to a Smart Thermostat to Lower Your Energy Bill A smart thermostat can help you make your home more energy-efficient and save money on your energy bills. This device learns your habits and preferences, like when you usually get home and what temperature you prefer. As a result, it will automatically adjust temperature settings to help you stay warm while you're at home and turn off the heating when you leave the house. Although smart thermostats tend to be pricey, it's worth the investment because they will lower your energy bills. Use Microwaveable Heating Pads Another economical way to stay warm is to use microwaveable heating pads on your hands or feet. This inexpensive option can help you cut energy use when you're cold. You can also use it to relieve neck pain, back pain, muscle aches, and menstrual cramps. Sounds pretty good, right? If you don't have a heating pad, make one yourself. Just fill a clean cotton sock with uncooked rice, sew it shut and heat it in the microwave for one minute. Enjoy Hot Meals and Warm Beverages Don't know what to eat? A great idea to increase your body temperature and stay warm would be to prepare hot meals from scratch, like a cup of soup. With this, you will generate heat in the kitchen and warm yourself from the inside. You can also drink warm beverages, like coffee, tea, or hot cocoa. This will have the same effect as eating hot meals, but that's n...

Sengled The Smart Health Monitoring Light bulb claims to read heart rate, body temperature and other vital signs through entirely non-invasive sensors. It uses a radar sensor instead of a passive infrared (PIR) sensor, meaning it can read through materials and detect more subtleties. Ideally, the higher sensitivity would allow for the light bulbs to detect different people, see movement through textiles and other complexities of off-skin health tracking. According to Sengled, a collection of Smart Health Monitoring Light bulbs connect via Bluetooth mesh to create a virtual map in your home, relying on several points of “view” for complete health tracking. To be clear, the light bulb doesn't have a camera or anything built in. It can't see or record you, just sense you. LG LG OLED EVO Gallery Addition - The next evolution of Self-Lit Pixels brings a new definition of brightness. LG's smart TVs all run WebOS - now renamed WebOS 22 (for the year). The platform is getting a few updates, including the ability to add user profiles. Users will login and get their own mix of content—but not TV display settings. QNED Mini LED - LG is also updating its 4K QNED line for 2022. They all feature updated Quantum Dot technology in which the Nano Cell is now an emissive layer. The crux of quantum dot is the clarifying of the light from Blue LED to running some through the Quantum Dots to run them green and then a Nano Cell layer that emits red light. LG claims a 90%+ DCI-P3 wide color gamut reproduction compared to the 70% coverage on traditional LED-LCD TVs. The Tech Abilities Studio was organized prepared and then, we went off the rails. Even the best of planning did not stop the spontaneity from over-riding the intent of an outline. Is this a bad thing? You be the judge. You can listen using the chapter feature if your player has it, or just take it all in one big binge. Serina, Raqi, Jesse and Jeff jump the tracks and go in depth on unintended segues that are thought provoking and yes, the spontaneous nature made it through the editing process and defied Raqi's claim that Jeff does not like spontaneous. Hmmph. I say. We really go into some deep discussions so grab a lifeline and jump on in with us. Give us a call at 612-367-6093 and leave us some feedback, suggestions or just say, Hi! We are REC – a podcast series produced in partnership with Rappahannock Electric Cooperative. We recorded today's episode via Zoom with Casey Hollins, Director of Communications and Public Relations for Rappahannock Electric Cooperative to learn about smart thermostats. Casey explained that heating and cooling can equal half of a consumer's electric bill and that you can get the most impact for lowering those costs by programming your thermostat. She walked us through some things to consider when choosing a smart thermostat for your home and compared the two most popular options: Nest & ecobee. The Nest Learning Thermostat (or Nest Thermostat) is a smart thermostat developed by Nest Labs. It is an electronic, programmable, and self-learning Wi-Fi-enabled thermostat that optimizes heating and cooling of homes and businesses to conserve energy. The device is based on a machine learning algorithm: for the first weeks users have to regulate the thermostat in order to provide the reference data set. The thermostat can then learn people's schedule, at which temperature they are used to and when. Using built-in sensors and phones' locations, it can shift into energy saving mode when it realizes nobody is at home. ecobee created the world's first smart thermostat, the ecobee Smart, in 2008. The thermostats incorporate a touchscreen and work with up to 32 remote temperature/occupancy sensors which can adjust the temperature based on where you are. The ecobee4 and ecobee Smart Thermostat also include Amazon Alexa support. All thermostats since the ecobee3 allow the user to set different schedules each day for various activities (called comfort settings). By default these include home, away, and sleep. The remote temperature/occupancy sensors can engage a Smart Away mode if no movement is detected or a Follow Me mode to selectively control the thermostat based on where people are within the home. All remote sensors which are designated as "participating" in a comfort setting take the average of their temperatures and use that as the building's "overall" temperature. Additionally, users can set convenient reminders for HVAC maintenance, furnace filter replacement, or UV Lamp replacement, as well as alerts for high/low temperature and high/low humidity. This week on Unconventional Genius, I talk with Stuart Lombard, Founder and CEO of Ecobee about how he led his company to overcome adversity to become the smart thermostat leader. Even what sometimes seems like a victory in business can turn in to an unexpected setback. It’s not about the challenges but how you respond to them that matter. Stuart Lombard is serious about saving energy. Even with no background in the energy sector and no experience in consumer electronics, Stuart set out to create a better way to manage energy in the home. “When we started people were like ‘Why are you doing thermostats? That’s the stupidest idea ever!’” With a degree in applied mathematics and a background in leading businesses, he started a company that produced one of the first connected thermostats. How a potential setback set the course for continued success Before the launch of Ecobee, thermostats were programmable, but not wifi connected. In 2009, Stuart led Ecobee to raise capital, secure investors, and release the first connected thermostat to market. It was a huge success. However, 2 years later NEST introduced their cheaper and more feature-rich thermostat. What could’ve been a devastating setback turned into be a defining moment for the company. How you respond when unforeseen trouble arises can make or break your company. For Stuart Lombard, even a potentially crippling challenge couldn’t stop his optimism or passion for creating a great product. Instead of giving up, the Ecobee team dug in and found a way to create the next best product that would put them back on top of the connected thermostat market. How Apple set the expectation for all consumer electronics Even though they don’t make thermostats, Apple has set the expectations for all consumer electronics when it comes to form and function. This has led Stuart Lombard and his team to pursue excellence and innovation. During our conversation, Stuart shares five competitive pillars that Ecobee strives to win at with every product. One key to success that Stuart shares is the importance of slowing down. For startup companies, everything is urgent. However, when you are first developing a product you have to take your time and consider every detail. Once you’ve solidified the actual product, then you can speed up. Knowing the rhythm of when to slow down and when to push forward is critical. The mission that propels Ecobee Ecobee's mission is greater than creating a great consumer product. It is about making the world a better place and helping people reduce their carbon footprint. They have a program that allows customers to anonymize their data and share it for research purposes. This program helps Ecobee make life better and more efficient through their products. They are also partnering with utility companies to help them serve their customers. I ask Stuart Lombard about the advantages and disadvantages of running a tech company in Toronto. He shares that there is a wealth of talent in Toronto, with less competition than Silicon Valley. The cost of living and quality of life are also better. Access to capital and quality of the teams continues to raise the level of opportunity for Ecobee. What the future holds for Ecobee Ecobee continues to innovate by bringing new and improved products to market. The newest is the Switch Plus, which is a wifi connected light switch. It has occupancy detection so it will turn on the lights in a dark hallway. It will also turn off lights for you. Listen as Stuart shares about how their light switch solves common problems in the home. 10 years into the business and Stuart Lombard says he is as excited as ever about the opportunities ahead for Ecobee. They are continuing to research and learn the needs of customers. He believes the connected home will be the next computing platform. With all the adversity that Ecobee and Stuart Lombard has faced, they have been able to overcome and take their place at the top of the smart thermostat industry. While Nest wasn’t the first company to offer a smart thermostat, its first product quickly developed rock star status. Nest helped turn the thermostat -- a relatively forgettable device -- into a sexy offering that made consumers excited about other devices that would be offered as part of the smart home. Honeywell, a company that has long dominated the traditional thermostat market, is now going head to head with Nest in selling smart thermostats. In the third episode of a 7-part series on the future of the smart home, Andrew examines how an industry titan is able to maintain its lead in the smart thermostat space and what this means for manufacturers of smart home devices in other verticals. Interviewee Other Leaders Consulted for this episode Episode Excerpt The Birth Of Smart Home Cool In the mid-2000’s, Matt Rogers started as an intern on the engineering team at Apple that worked on the iPod. At the time, Tony Fadell was running the iPod group that Rogers reported into. Rogers went on to work on the iPhone and the iPad, and then, in 2010, in what must have seemed like a crazy move at the time, both Rogers and Fadell left Apple and decided to collaborate on, of all things, a thermostat. They began designing the prototype out of a garage that Rogers rented in Silicon Valley. When Rogers presented the idea of building a smart home to Fadell, even Fadell, who was building his own smart home at the time, told Rogers he thought that smart homes were only for geeks. Eventually, Fadell told Rogers that instead of a whole smart home, he’d like him to focus on a smart thermostat, and they came up with a plan to deliver on one with an interface as friendly as an iPod. This required a team of 100 people, and Fadell and Rogers released the first generation of the Nest device in 2011. Two things seemed revolutionary about the Nest Learning Thermostat. First, I'm guessing that, before Nest, the overwhelming majority of people couldn’t tell you the name of the company that manufactured their thermostats. For people who purchased Nests, the user interface was so enticing that people began to brag about their thermostat. If you’ve ever used a Nest, you’d know that there are no switches or mechanical buttons. There’s just a dial. As you turn the dial, you see different options (which are really menus and sometimes menus within menus). When you press on the dial, it selects the menu you want and then you’re presented with more choices you can see by turning the dial. Again, you press to choose air conditioning or press to choose the temperature you want. Strange as it may sound, using Nest is fun. Then, there was the second innovation. You could control your Nest from an app on your iPhone or Android device. I have two Nest thermostats in my home. There are many times when I’m lying in bed and too lazy to get up and change the temperature. So I take out my phone or iPad and change the temperature from where I am. Yes, it’s an exercise in extraordinary laziness. In subsequent Nest models, they incorporated a motion sensor to detect when you were in a room and then adjusted the HVAC to the temperature you liked. If the device didn’t recognize any motion, then the HVAC was turned off to actually save you money on your energy bill. The experience was so revolutionary at the time Nest was released in 2011 that sales went through the roof. Only a month after its release, it was “sold out” in Nest’s online store. Three years later, Google bought the company for $3.2 billion. The Smart Thermostat Market It turns out that thermostats are big business and serve as a gateway to much more functionality within the home. If a thermostat possesses a motion sensor, it might inform other decisions about how the room operates. Motion at a certain time of day might trigger a decision about what lights to turn on or whether the blinds should be ...

We start off with a discussion about our now-smarter home. A lot happened in a week, and we now have a Smart Speaker (Amazon Echo), a Smart Thermostat (Nest 2.0), and a Smart Lock (Kwikset Kevo). We talk about the plusses and minuses of each, the actual usefulness of each, and some upcoming features announced for our Kevo smart lock. From there, we move on to a discussion of Android updates to non-Google devices, and why Samsung is the security guard in the hotel room when you hire a hooker (it makes more sense in context). We meant to just brush past a quick note about Star Wars hitting iTunes, but it turned into well over half the show being about Star Wars. If you hate Star Wars, I’d apologize, but you have no soul so it doesn’t really matter.

"Internet of Things" is one of the hot catchphrases of the industry these days. It's about connecting special-purpose devices (laundry machines, dishwashers, toasters, locomotives, trucks, factory robots, etc.) directly or indirectly to the Internet. As things go, several commercial customers have nudged us in the direction of taking a good, long look at this space and we're already actively helping several of them to deal with the particular scale challenges of needing to connect tens of thousands or more devices concurrently and with bi-directional information exchange. This is the first in a series of episodes I'll do on the IoT/M2M subject area here on "Subscribe!" and in this first one, I'm introducing the problem space, talk about patterns, and am talking about the connectivity options and challenges around devices, specifically also discussing VPN.More on the subject:June 2012 MSDN Magazine "Using Service Bus for Things" (must read) July 2012 MSDN Magazine "A Smart Thermostat on the Service Bus" Internet of Things: Is VPN a False Friend?
