In this episode of Badlands Story Hour, Chris Paul and Burning Bright dive deep into Tim Burton's Big Fish, unpacking its emotional and philosophical resonance with the storytelling lens they apply to today's political and cultural narratives. They explore the central father-son conflict through the metaphor of narrative trust, examining how intention shapes perception, and how storytelling itself can be a form of deeper truth. Drawing parallels between the film's protagonist Edward Bloom and figures like Donald Trump, the hosts argue that exaggerated tales, when rooted in good faith, may reveal more than literal facts ever could. The conversation seamlessly connects themes of myth, memory, verisimilitude, and the psychological need for narrative coherence in a world awash in psyops. It's a poignant meditation on identity, legacy, and the power of fiction to shape our reality.
On this episode, Tony Brueski digs into the shadowy corners of Beetle House NYC, a Tim Burton-themed restaurant that may offer more than just eerie ambiance and ghoulish cocktails. While the décor is intentionally spooky, reports from staff and guests suggest something more uninvited is lurking behind the scenes. Cold spots, whispers, and a well-dressed phantom known only as “The Gentleman” are just the beginning. Tony explores the building's historic past, the East Village's long-standing paranormal reputation, and the growing number of chilling experiences being documented inside the restaurant's walls. Is it all part of the performance—or is something supernatural joining the dinner party? From psychological theories to ghost hunter investigations, we dive headfirst into one of Manhattan's most unsettling modern haunts.

Batman Forever attempted to course correct the Caped Crusader's big screen adventures after its predecessor, Tim Burton's Batman Returns, was deemed too dark. Swapping Burton for Joel Schumacher in the director's chair, the film certainly has a different feel than Returns. It trades the dark and moody Gotham for a more campy, neon soaked one. That change may have led to greater receipts at the box office, but it hardly equated to a quality film. Batman Forever isn't without its charms, but it is also a tonal wreck, whiplashing between introspective musings of what it means to be Batman and the Two-Face/Riddler comedy hour. It's no wonder than that its star, Val Kilmer—who stepped in for Keaton—wanted no part of a sequel. Judging by our Batman & Robin pod, he made the right choice. E quindi è arrivato il turno dell'eccentrico "Dark Shadows".

For the final chapter of Disaster Month, we're beaming up to one of the weirdest alien invasion movies ever: Mars Attacks! (1996). This star-studded satire directed by Tim Burton packs in lasers, skeletons, and Slim Whitman—all with a wink to 1950s B-movies. But… does it actually hold together, or is it just chaos in a red-and-green package? We break down the over-the-top performances, bizarre plot choices, and the ridiculous number of celebrity cameos (Jack Nicholson, twice?!). Plus, we debate if the film is missing something essential, like, say, actual jokes. Is Mars Attacks! too scattered to be a true classic, or is it exactly the kind of weird that makes it unforgettable?

“Your intention is your superpower. It's the energy that turns thought into performance, belief into action.” — Dr. Toper Taylor In this groundbreaking episode of the Turmeric & Tequila® podcast, host Kristen Olson sits down with Dr. Toper Taylor—Emmy-winning producer, entrepreneur, intention researcher, and former Hollywood executive—to explore the intersection of human performance, quantum physics, and personal transformation. Dr. Toper shares insights from his pioneering dissertation, “The Human Performance Intention Experiment,” which scientifically demonstrated how positive intention can enhance athletic performance. From producing over 15,000 TV episodes to exploring subtle energy sciences and now serving in politics, Toper's journey is a powerful reminder that authenticity, intention, and interconnectedness are key to both personal and collective success. Tune in to hear: How thoughts can influence real-world outcomes (yes, even swim times!) Based upon the comic strip created in 1931 by Chester Gould, this eye-popping live-action adaptation was long planned by Oscar-winning director Warren Beatty (Reds, Heaven Can Wait) who also elected to star as the titular square-jawwed crime fighter sporting a bright yellow jacket. Finally green-lit and released by Disney in the wake of the breakout success the prior year of Tim Burton's Batman, the studio was hoping that it could duplicate the mega-blockbuster success of that comic book adaptation, backing its release with loads of marketing hype AND three different soundtrack albums including an assortment of original songs written by Tony-winning songwriting stage legend Stephen Sondheim (West Side Story, Into the Woods) and performed one of its co-stars....that would be Madonna who played Breathtless Mahoney, who is also a key femme fatale for the story. She is joined by completely STACKED cast by Paul Sorvino, Mandy Patinkin, Glenne Headley, Charlie Korsmo, Charles Durning, James Caan, Dustin Hoffman, AND Al Pacino who plays the film's main villain Big Boy Caprice. Alas the film did solid box office but did not live up to the Batman-level hype...though it DID set a record for most Oscars won by a comic book adaptation with three for Best Makeup, Best Original Song, and Best Art Direction. This record of three Oscars would not be matched for another 28 years until it was eventually tied by another Disney comic book release, Black Panther. Celluloid Pudding: Movies. Film. Discussions. Laughter. History. Carrying on.
With the long weekend coming up, and Summer just around the corner, we thought it might be fun to cover a film that evokes vibes of late night drive-ins and Sci Fi blockbusters. Tim Burton's 1996 version of space invaders turns the first contact trope on its head. It is mercilessly satirical and simultaneously hilarious. It features a cast of many A-listers (Burton wished he could have had more), and some of what we think is the best cinematic use of CGI compared to other films of the era. Strap in for some fun and many senseless tangents. ACK! ACK! to you all.

What's up, nerds? This week on the podcast, Maryland Phil joins me for a deep dive into Marvel's Thunderbolts—or the New Avengers? We unpack our thoughts and feelings on the recent film, including our personal ratings out of 10 and what the name change might signal for the MCU's future. We take a closer look at each character's arc and background, drawing comparisons to Suicide Squad along the way. Our conversation expands into a broader critique of the MCU's various phases, its growing collection of TV shows, and how the Multiverse Saga might eventually wrap up. From standout character development to some serious storytelling missteps, we break it all down with our “Good, Bad, and Ugly” segment. Let's get goth with it! This week the blokes bring in friend Matthew Babb to talk all things Vincent Price, Tim Burton, classic western films, and the underrated performance of our king: Alan Arkin
Brooklyn-based goth-folk duo Charming Disaster's upcoming album The Double—their seventh full-length release—explores the world that exists behind the one we know, featuring songs inspired by nature, mortality, magic, ritual, and literary genres ranging from science fiction to Victorian horror. The new album was co-produced by band members Ellia Bisker and Jeff Morris with longtime collaborator, recording engineer Don Godwin. All but one of the ten tracks were recorded at Tonal Park in Takoma Park, MD, with one song recorded by circus music composer Peter Bufano in Boston, MA. The Double will be released on CD, as a 12-inch colored vinyl LP, and on all digital platforms on May 16, 2025. The vinyl will be released in a 2-disc package that also includes Charming Disaster's 2024 compilation Time Ghost, a collection of singles released over the last decade. The Double invites listeners to step across the border of an alternate reality, where spells are cast, time travel is possible, plants are taking over civilization, and vampires lurk in the shadows. Adventures in the darkness lie beyond the threshold. The album's ten songs include “Black Locust,” a lullaby about mortality; “New Moon,” a magical nature ritual; “Trick of the Light,” a reimagining of Bram Stoker's Dracula; “Time Machine,” in which Charming Disaster change the past and start over again; “Scavengers,” a walk in the woods with vultures and bones; “Beautiful Night,” a defiant response to struggles with depression; “Vitriol,” a tribute to artist Thomas Little, who turns guns into ink; “Haunted Lighthouse,” a swashbuckling sea voyage; “Gang of Two,” a true crime adventure; and “Green Things,” a love letter to what grows between the cracks (and its inevitable takeover). The album features an array of talented collaborators. Co-producer Don Godwin, who has worked on Charming Disaster's entire discography, contributed bass, drums, and horns as well as engineering and mixing. “Haunted Lighthouse” features Broadway percussionist Mike Dobson along with circus composer Peter Bufano, who played piano and accordion and engineered the track at Cirkestra World Headquarters in Boston, MA (with additional tracking at Tonal Park). “Scavengers” features cello recorded by Kate Wakefield of the duo Lung, who also created the string arrangement for “Beautiful Night.” Stefan Zeniuk of Gato Logo contributed saxophone to “Green Things.” In conjunction with The Double, Charming Disaster is releasing the second edition of their “oracle deck” (similar to a Tarot deck). The Charming Disaster Oracle Deck contains 72 cards (including 12 new cards for the second edition), each representing one of the songs from Charming Disaster's discography. The cards feature illustrations commissioned from more than thirty different artists. The deck can be used as a divination tool, or as a visual accompaniment to Charming Disaster's music. The duo themselves use these cards in their live performances to determine the set through the element of chance. Charming Disaster was formed by Bisker and Morris in 2012, inspired by the gothic humor of Edward Gorey and Tim Burton, the murder ballads of the American Folk tradition, and the dramatic flair of the cabaret. Together the duo write songs that tell stories about myth, magic, and mortality, using two voices to explore dark narratives and characters with a playfully macabre sensibility. On their critically acclaimed albums Love, Crime & Other Trouble (2015), Cautionary Tales (2017), and SPELLS + RITUALS (2019), Charming Disaster explored death, crime, folklore, and the occult. On Our Lady of Radium (2022), they turned their attention to science and explored the life and discoveries of pioneering scientist Marie Curie. On Super Natural History (2023), they united the natural world and the metaphysical realm in a musical cabinet of curiosities. The duo put out two releases in 2024: Time Ghost, an album-length collection of songs released as singles between 2013 and 2024; and Dance Me to the End of Bela Lugosi's Lovesong, an EP of covers paying tribute to a few of the band's influences: Leonard Cohen's “Dance Me to the End of Love,” “Bela Lugosi's Dead” by Bauhaus, and The Cure's “Lovesong.” In Charming Disaster's live shows, the duo combine vocal harmonies and clever lyrics with ukulele, guitar, and foot percussion, with a cabaret-influenced performance style that straddles the line between concert and theatre and has been described as “haunted vaudeville” (Splice Magazine). Charming Disaster's music has been featured on the spooky hit podcast Welcome to Night Vale. They have opened for legendary cello-rock ensemble Rasputina, Goth icon Voltaire, and Amanda Palmer's punk cabaret duo The Dresden Dolls. Their concerts have captivated audiences across the United States and in Europe. In this episode, SAG Award-winning actress Caroline Aaron shares what it was like growing up Jewish in the South, dining out gratis, thanks to her father's work as a restaurant supplier before his untimely death, and the subsequent Southern meals lovingly prepared by her family's African-American housekeeper—including fried chicken and a distinctive red/orange matzoh ball soup at Passover. She reflects on her activist single mother's influence, dinner table conversations centered on social justice, and the values that shaped her. Caroline also discusses her work with legendary directors like Mike Nichols, Woody Allen, and Tim Burton, and recalls Uta Hagen's unforgettable advice about food and acting. The behind the scenes stories of two films some time in the making come together in this episode, starting with 1993's Jurassic Park. A film made at a point when Steven Spielberg's box office touch was being questioned. A movie that, had a battle for the rights gone the other way, could have been made by one of Tim Burton, Joe Dante or Richard Donner. As it was, Universal and Spielberg made the movie, and the Arnold Schwarzenegger-headlined Last Action Hero was set to go head-to-head with it. 2019's Booksmart meanwhile took ten years to get made, even though its budget was well under $10m. First time director Olivia Wilde had quite the pitch to earn the job behind the camera - but then had a battle to get audiences to the movie once she'd made it. Stories of both are told in this episode... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Grab your sheer wrap and leather kneepads, we're heading to Hong Kong to hang with Michelle Yeoh, Maggie Cheung, and Anita Mui in Johnnie To's 1993 cult classic THE HEROIC TRIO!How many baby thefts is too many? We're here to answer this, how it fuses Tim Burton and James Cameron with wuxia, the mind-boggling star power on screen, and how Hong Kong's trademark tonal juggling act is pushed to the extreme.Nick is here to impart the good word of Anita Mui's life, and Erin gives us the lowdown on what makes a wuxia and how the Heroic Trio fits into its thousands-of-years long tradition.Content warning: as with the movie, there is discussion of infanticide
The IPS Morning Deprogram5/5/25 The IPS Morning Deprogram is planned to be a steady program beginning in 2025, operating in the mornings, with evening open phone sessions complementing it. The purpose of the Morning D program is to set the stage for later discussions. The host utilizes automations and AI agents in their workflow. The program is described as a "work in progress," not yet in its "final form".The core focus of the program is media analysis and propaganda analysis, covering information from both news and entertainment. The host positions the program's approach as philosophical, detached, and distinct from conspiracy theorists, mainstream news, activists, or QAnon. The goal is not to "wake people up" or "fight the deep state".The session begins with a discussion of a clip from an individual who worked in security for 15 years, commenting on the Trump assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July. The security expert suggests the attempt was staged because standard security protocol dictates keeping the target on the ground and shielded, not standing them upright for a "photo op". The host agrees that the event was staged but argues that the security expert's perspective is limited because he is "in the box" of mainstream mediation and mixes "real" and "fake" elements. This mixing of real and fake is labeled as "confusion," "MSM Plus," or a "normie take".The host contends that when someone believes an event is partially real (e.g., believing a shooter or victim died) while also seeing signs of fakery, they often invent complex explanations or conspiracy theories to reconcile the inconsistencies. Examples given include the idea that a "degenerate kid" was hired to shoot and miss but accidentally killed someone, or questioning how an AP photographer captured the bullet. The host's approach is informed disbelief and suspending judgment when consuming media. The principle is that "if there's any hint of fakery body count goes to zero" until an actual crime is proven. This contrasts with "conspiracy theorists" or "false flaggers" who might believe an event is a conspiracy but still accept that people died.A significant theme is the critique of the left-right political paradigm, which the host views as both sides colluding against the masses. Events are often presented as "bifurcated PSYOPs," where both sides agree the event happened but blame the other side for the cause. Examples include helicopter crashes (blaming DEI vs. funding cuts) and mass shootings (blaming gun culture vs. antidepressants). The session also discusses recent events framed as potential psyops or theater. The Austin Metcalfe stabbing and the Shiloh Hendricks incident are presented as being put in the same conversation, described as a "proxy race war" engineered psychological operation, potentially timed for the summer. The GoFundMe accounts associated with these incidents are seen as part of building a "race war narrative".Predictive programming and synchronicity between media/entertainment and real-world events are explored. Examples include parallels between Donald Trump and Hulk Hogan (blading technique), Nick Fuentes and David Duke, Elon Musk and a character in "the madness", Laura Loomer and a character named Laura Jennings, and the timing and imagery of the Trump assassination attempt aligning with scenes in Tim Burton's Beetlejuice. The Ave Maria performance at a Trump rally 84 days after the alleged shooting is highlighted as a parallel to the song sung by the Riddler in The Batman. The fact that both alleged Trump shooters appeared in BlackRock commercials is noted, which is seen by others as evidence of a "deep state" plot but by the host as evidence of individuals being within the "PSYOP entertainment complex" or "the club".Religious and symbolic themes are discussed, such as Pope Francis and Klaus Schwab stepping down on the same day at age 88, a number associated with twins and duality. The host questions if Pope Francis is truly dead or if the death was staged. Trump sharing an AI video portraying himself as Pope is mentioned, along with the QAnon belief that Trump is the new Pope. The Aramaic word "Abracadabra," meaning "I create as I speak," is discussed in the context of spellcraft, media, and shaping worldviews.Critiques are leveled against certain conspiracy theories, including the idea that reality is a simulation. The host argues that simulation theory is a "psyop" and "cognitive sabotage" designed to undermine the credibility of those who see through media manipulation. The host distinguishes their position, stating that reality exists and is objective, predictable, testable, and reliable, while media is not. Believing reality is fake because media is fake is seen as confusing the map with the territory. The host also critiques "truthers" who dismiss fake events entirely without analysis, viewing this as a form of "gaslighting" or "damage control" because fake events are precisely

Send us a textHave you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight? Tim Burton's 1989 Batman transformed not just how we see the Dark Knight, but how Hollywood approaches superhero films entirely. When Michael Keaton was announced as Batman, fans were outraged. A petition with 50,000 signatures protested the decision. Even Batman creator Bob Kane expressed doubt. Fast forward to today, and many consider Keaton the definitive live-action Batman, perfectly balancing Bruce Wayne's sophistication with Batman's brooding intensity.Jack Nicholson's Joker performance remains legendary. After negotiating a percentage of box office and merchandise sales (earning him between $50-90 million), Nicholson delivered a villain for the ages - theatrical, unpredictable, and genuinely menacing. His iconic line about dancing with the devil still sends chills down spines decades later. What makes this film special is how it broke from convention. Rather than beginning with Batman's origin story, Burton introduces him as an established vigilante, gradually revealing his past through carefully placed flashbacks. The film's gothic visual style, Danny Elfman's unforgettable score, and practical effects created a Gotham City that feels tangible and timeless.Batman grossed $411 million worldwide, holding the record for highest-grossing superhero film until 2002's Spider-Man. More importantly, it proved comic book adaptations could be serious artistic and commercial ventures, paving the way for everything from Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy to today's superhero renaissance. What's your favorite Batman film? Does Keaton still hold the crown as the best Batman, or has another actor claimed the cowl? Share your thoughts and join the conversation!Support the show

Alright, Spookies, we finally finished making our way through the OG flicks, which means it's time to start talking reboots. That's right, we've circled so far through PLANET OF THE APE-RIL that we're now right back at the beginning with Planet of the Apes (2001). For take two of the franchise, Tim Burton teamed up with Mark Wahlberg and Helena Bonham Carter to see if they had something new to add to the conversation, but studio meddling may have caused some major problems. Join us for a new Spooky Tuesday as we discuss how it stacks up to the originals, its fidelity to the Pierre Boulle novel, and the way Rick Baker finally got the tightline right. Join us as we talk about this early 2000s Tim Burton take on a tale of tales! This movie is many stories within a story. How did we like it? Only 1 way to find out!
In retrospect, it turns out that Michael Keaton might have been the coolest Batman of all time. I mean, did anyone really go see that Flash movie because The Flash is so awesome? Nope. Keaton Batman. That's why. In the mid-1990s, after Tim Burton stepped away from the franchise, the next couple of Batman movies would have a new director, and (gasp!) a couple of new Batmen. While we've seen some really excellent work from both Val Kilmer (RIP) and George Clooney, these were not their crowning achievements. Or should I say masking achievements? These movies quickly became a parody of themselves, goofy as hell, turning our Dark Knight into a Dork Knight. Oh, yeah...and Robin. Well, there were a few entertaining villains in the mix, and you might find some entertainment listening to me dissect these 2 oddities in the Batman cinematic timeline. But, truthfully, I don't think even Ozzy would want a taste of these bats.

During their conversation, Steve shares the origins of the Superman Homepage in the early days of the Internet, how the site started to gain traction during the late 90s as Tim Burton's SUPERMAN LIVES production, and how the site's popularity exploded when SUPERMAN RETURNS went into production. Shawn and Steve also discuss their anticipation of James Gunn's new film and speculate on what DC has in store for Superman fans during Cinema Con (April 1) and Superman Day (April 18).
