Rafi has worked in a variety of settings, from orthopedic and musculoskeletal rehabilitation, to academia, and even healthcare consulting. He spent the majority of his clinical experience working at Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center, where he was the lead clinician and clinical education coordinator for the outpatient specialty rehab program. The carnivore diet might seem like just the ticket if you love meat enough to eat it for every meal (hello, Ron Swanson). In this diet plan, you do just that: eat meat or animal products for every meal. Unlike keto, which limits carbs to a certain number per day, the carnivore diet aims for zero carbs per day. You eat only meat, fish, eggs and some animal products; you exclude all other food groups — including vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes, nuts and seeds.  The carnivore diet boasts weight loss, improved mood, as well as blood sugar regulation. It was founded on the belief that high-carb diets are the cause of chronic disease. However, there are drawbacks to eating nothing but animal protein and zero carbs. Carbs get a bad rap. When you digest carbs, your body turns them into glucose to be used for energy. But if you're not exercising regularly to burn those carbs, they can quickly turn into fat. Therefore, too many carbs can pack on the pounds quickly.  “Carbohydrates are your body's preferred energy source — what it's accustomed to using for energy,” says Patton. “But if you don't eat carbs, your next resort is burning fat. And that comes from burning fat in foods you eat or your own body fat.” She says people tend to feel good once they're off carbs because they don't have any wild swings in blood sugar, and eating meat is not as inflammatory. But she warns: Too much animal fat can cause inflammation too.  According to Patton, the absence of carbohydrates is what leads to the weight loss associated with the carnivore diet, but carbs are your body's preferred energy source. And you can have some serious side effects living off a meat-only diet.  According to D.P. Folge 47 / Concept Gespräch Nr 25 Interview mit Alex Kiesow Natural Running Coach Natural Running? Also barfuß joggen??? Ganz genau und Alex läuft sogar barfuß mittlerweile den 172 Marathon in 165 Wochen. Wieso er das macht? Na weil er es kann – In Schuhen erlebte er viele körperliche Probleme und Verletzungen, als er im Jahr 2000 mit dem Laufsport startete. Konventionelle Methoden bzw. Therapien brachten ihn nicht wieder zurück zu gesunden Füßen, Knien und Rücken – also forschte er selbst und probierte aus, was seinem Körper gut tut und was er tatsächlich braucht. Seit 2016 ist er nun komplett barfuß unterwegs, sowohl privat als auch im Sport und beruflich als Musiker. Seine Erkenntnisse teilt er mit uns und bremst gerne zu euphorische barfuß Läufer mit seinem Motto: „Mach langsamer, dann geht es schneller“. Denn die Umstellung von Schuhen auf ganz barfuß braucht seine Zeit und Geduld, sowie Technik. The Hurricane Hundred K is a 100k trail race/run in Hurricane, West Virginia. It's the first race of its kind in West Virginia and will take place in September 2022. The race is hosted by Meeks Mountain Trials and the Meeks Mountain Trail Alliance. In this mini-series, we talk to a variety of runners who plan to run the 100k in September. Air Force Reserve Lt. Col. (Dr.) Mark Cucuzzella is a Professor at West Virginia University School of Medicine. He is designing programs to promote healthier and better running in the military with the USAF Efficient Running Project. Mark has presented running workshops on over 50 military bases in the last 10 years and continues to teach through Healthy Running. ​ A competitive runner for over 35 years -with more than 100 marathon and ultramarathon finishes - and continues to compete as a national-level Masters runner. Concept Gespräch Nr. 16 Avo X-Trail-Sandale Es wird sportlich – wir gehen Laufen in Trail-Sandalen. Aber nicht in irgendwelchen, denn seit der Shamma-Folge wissen wir ja, dass Alex es einfach mag. Also darf nicht lange eingestellt oder justiert werden, es muss sofort sitzen und leicht an- und auszuziehen sein. Genau diese Sandale haben wir gefunden: Avo X-Trail mit einem sehr innovativem Schnellspannsystem. Die Sandale besteht aus einer 7mm dünnen Vibram Sohle und hält den Fuß über einen Zehensteg und einem „Segel“ ordentlich fest. Dieses Segel ist verbunden über einen Nylon-Draht mit dem Zehensteg und Fersenriemen, der mit Hilfe eines Rädchens diesen Draht anzieht. Der Fuß wird also an die Sohle herangezogen und fixiert. Das ist aber nicht alles… dieses Stellrad kennt man ja noch von diversen Laufschuhen, was ebenfalls eine Nylonschnur gespannt hat. Dieses Rad hielt allerdings den Faden nicht fest, so dass beim Laufen der Schuh sich lockerte. Bei dem Avo X-Trail nicht, das Rad wird raffiniert hochgezogen und wieder rein gedrückt, damit eben das nicht passiert. Wir sind sehr begeistert von dem System. Zusätzlich hält er bei Nässe ebenfalls sehr gut am Fuß und wir finden, dass er optisch ein echter Allrounder ist. Wir sind uns auch einig, dass Preis-Leistung hier passt. Tom Brown III is back. In this episode, we delve into the importance of nature to our well-being and into how to live and thrive as the human animal that we are. Tom's bio: Tom, otherwise known as “T3”, has been a practitioner and teacher of primitive living skills, wilderness survival, tracking, and nature observation from an early age. Growing up in New Jersey at the Tracker School, he was raised with deep reverence and respect for wild places and the skills our ancestors used to live close to the land. After graduating high school, he spent a few years wandering the country, practicing the skills he learned as a child in both urban and wilderness environments. He eventually returned to Tracker School and after a few years became head instructor and director of operations. In 2009 he left Tracker School to start the Primitive Arts Collective, an outdoor education program that sought to teach people in small groups in many different states across the country. In 2016 Tom moved to Oregon and now works with Trackers Earth. Tom’s role at Tracker’s Earth involves being both the land steward and an adult educator. His unique insight and first-hand knowledge about how large groups of people interact with the landscape help him and the Tracker’s team ensure healthy land management practices. These pratices will benefit not only the students but also the wild things that are the centerpiece of these rural locations. Tom loves all things wild and free. Ollie the Collie and I are getting out 2-3 times a week.  He's still a menace.  I won't be able to get away with the ‘Oh, sorry, he's just a puppy…' line much longer.  He'll knock out 8 to 10 miles easy with me in the trails.  I like to let him off leash so he can burn some energy.  It's takes about 4 ½ miles for him to settle down.  Until that point he's sprinting up and down the trail.  It's a challenge because he has no manners and won't come when he's called and just loves to meet and greet people we run into.  He's got another gear now and when he goes, I can't catch him.  I've started referring to him as the ‘monochrome menace'.  But he's a good runner and he minds well when he's on leash.  He'll be a good partner but I'm going to have to break him, like a wild stallion.  He'll be my .   (Editor's note: all classical references will be linked to Wikipedia in the show notes) Today we have a good show for you.  Yeah you.  You know who you are.  But first an advertisement for a new cologne that I'm producing for the holidays.  It's called RunRunLive and it is the pleasing scent of sweat and dog ass.  Buy yours today at the RunRunLive web store.  Comes in a 16-ounce pop-top tall boy.  Today we chat with Brian Metzler about his new book Kicksology which is all about the evolution and lore of the running shoe.  Brian is a veteran running journalist.  Chances are you've read something that Brian has created or touched.  He has been a frequent contributor and started or edited a few of your favorite running publications.     What I liked about the book was that it was a trip down memory lane for me.  We love our shoes.  We have an irrational passion for a good pair of shoes.   Brian does a good job of tapping into that. In section one we are going to talk about breathing.  In section two we're going to talk about memory and redemption.  Since we last talked, you and I, I went for my annual check up.  Apparently, I'm still healthy.  I've been working hard on overeating and drinking too much beer for a couple months.  I'm up 8-10 pounds, but it's part of my natural cycle.  I can already feel the tug of the pendulum in the other direction. I have some good news for you men.  They have determined that the manual test for prostate problems has no efficacy.  No more fingers up the poop chute.  My doctor was reflective.  He said of all the hundreds of these tests he's done he only ever found 6 anomalies and none of those turned out to be actual problems.  Thanks again to Peter for reading that piriformis bit into audio last episode.  I got some great feedback on that.  I told you I'm trying to make November the month of gratitude.  I have so much to be thankful for.  I've been trying to get my morning routine in line by meditating a bit.  I'm going to share a technique I learned that might help you in this season of thanks giving. He is the author of Running Colorado's Front Range and co-author of Natural Running with Danny Abshire and Run Like a Champion with Alan Culpepper.   Section two – Memories and Redemption – Outro   Well, my friends, you have made it with gratitude to the end of the RunRunLive Podcast episode 4-420 in those brand new running shoes that you are thankful for.  Like I said I'm just doing 2-4 runs a week right now with Ollie.  Not training for anything specific.  I ran the local Thanksgiving 5k with my running club friend yesterday.   I had planned to walk it with Teresa but her foot was too hurt still.  That put me in a bit of a bind because I wasn't planning on running Thursday and I definitely wasn't planning on racing a 5K.  I ran with Ollie in the woods on Monday and Wednesday. It worked out ok.  I just lined up in the 8:00 min mile section and eased into it.  I ran easy and got pulled along by the crowd.   Ended up being surprised to average a 7:26 pace.  Since I wasn't hammering it I was being chatty with the other runners.  I'm a new level of annoying when you are running all out and I pull up beside you and start chatting. Next up, next weekend is the Mill Cities Relay.  I've got a good Men's 50+ team and we're going to have fun.  Then of course since I choose to live in a world where you can make up your own marathon and just show up without training on the last Sunday of December, we will be holding the 7th edition of the Groton Marathon.  I've got a handful of loonies signed up.  All are welcome.  Like I said earlier I've been putting in a lot of miles with Ollie.  Thursday was a long day for Ollie.  We had a lovely long walk in the Shaker conservation land in the bright, cold morning.  I was able to let him off leash so that he could sprint about through the swampy underbrush.  We were out for almost 2 hours.  Then we worked all day at Katie's new house painting the walls and ceilings.  Ollie's role in this is supervisorial.  He tests the quality of the painting by licking the freshly painted walls.  He enforces a schedule of mandatory puppy wrestling breaks. In this way we all stay limber for the work at hand. Later in the day he and I managed to beat the setting sun to a nice trail run.  We ambled through the soggy leaves for 6.5 more miles.  I was tired too.  My body was heavy from the unaccustomed time on my feet all day and the strange angles and dangles of honest work. We stood there steaming in the winter leaves and watching the sun melt into the trees.  I asked Ollie, “How you feeling?  Is this too much work, too much training?” He turned to me with his sharp brown eyes, considered me for a few long moments and responded, “No, Old-one, it is right that we train long.  For we must be prepared.  The day is coming when we will need to fight.  We will need our aerobic capacity and strength.” “Really”, I said, “How so?” He suppressed a small growl and pawed at the soft leaves and continued, “Grey-one, the time is coming soon when all will be ruin.  When the last remaining humans will be confined to carpeted cubicles and forced to ‘cuddle' (here he seemed to sneer the word) and scratch behind ears and speak baby talk…We must be prepared.  We few remaining working dogs and humans for the Doodle Apocalypse.” And with that he trotted off up the trail with a seriousness and purpose no 6 month old dog should be forced to carry. Many runners have made the shift to forefoot running and in doing so have migrated to zero drop shoes.  Unfortunately for many, this transition has not come easy and has lead to a variety of new problems such as debilitating calf and achilles soreness. Coach Richard Diaz addresses these concerns, and offers some advice on how best to approach this transition and sheds light on the likely culprits that lead to these problems, what to do when these problems arise along with an opinion on the decision regarding zeros drop as a shoe selection.  Is zero drop right for you? En ese libro se habla mucho de la postura que debemos tener para poder correr libremente, por mucho tiempo y sin lesiones. Cuando Luis leyó el libro en el 2011 se interesó por el tema y tomó la clase de chi running. Según su testimonio, aprender la postura y la técnica de correr correcta ha sido una excelente inversión para poder disfrutar a largo plazo el mundo del running. Soledad Darquea es una entrenadora certificada de la metodología Chi Running. Habita en Ecuador donde es maestra de negocios internacionales donde aplica los conocimientos adquiridos por más de 20 años en el mundo de negocios. En su etapa como emprendedora, logró posicionar una tienda especializada en running hasta ser adquirida por una de las marcas nacionales más grandes de Ecuador. Adicionalmente, Soledad es una gran atleta. Ganó medalla de oro en los Juegos del Pacífico en los 400 metros combinados de natación. Desde el 2004 ha corrido utilizando la técnica chi running. Logró clasificar a Boston dos veces utilizando este método. Ahora disfruta inmensamente compartir su conocimiento para ayudar a otros corredores a disfrutar del running plenamente. ¿Qué es Chi running? Es un método de correr que combina los principios de Tai Chi. Danny Dreyer estudio cuál sería la forma correcta de desplazarse con el mínimo impacto posible. Su meta era lograr dos cosas: Correr de la manera más eficiente. Correr sin incurrir en lesiones. Después de analizar todos los componentes, Danny identificó cuatro pilares importantes que los corredores pueden ajustar para mejorar el gesto de correr. Postura correcta: En este video mira como se recomienda formar una «C». Caer no en el talón: Adicionalmente, al dar pasos cortos logras mantener tus pies debajo de la cadera y no sobrecargar las rodillas. Correr desde el core. Los músculos del core son los más fuertes del cuerpo y mantenerlos activados ayudan al gesto de correr de manera correcta. Inclinación desde los tobillos. Al inclinarte desde los tobillos manteniendo una línea recta entre tobillos, cadera y hombros permites que la gravedad te lleve hacia adelante. Sugerencias para empezar con el Chi Running. Te recomendamos visitar la página www.ChiRunning.com. También puedes descargar la app ( Android | iPhone) para poder poner en práctica todos los principios del chi running. Sin embargo, puedes empezar de una vez aplicando estos tres principios. Ejercitar los músculos abdominales inferiores (core). Bajar el coxis a un cuarto de sentadilla en bajadas pronunciadas. Dar pasos cortos. Eleovando la cadencia a 170 o 180 pasos por minuto. ¿Se puede correr rápido con este método? Claro que sí. Sin embargo, personas que se enfocan exclusivamente en mejorar tiempos suelen no prestar atención a los cuatro pilares de la técnica de chi running. No obstante, una de las mayores ventajas del chi running es que incrementa tu eficiencia al correr. Al poner de tu lado las leyes naturales de la física y la biomecánica de tu cuerpo, logras recorrer más kilómetros con menos gasto de recursos.  A la larga, puedes también correr más velozmente ya que no estás desperdiciando energía en un gesto técnico inapropiado. ¿Por qué Chi Running evita lesiones? ¿Alguna vez has visto un perro correr? Un perro no se preocupa por medir distancias ni ritmo. Simplemente reacciona al terreno. No pelea contra él. Se deja llevar por el terreno y no frena con cada paso. De la misma manera, métodos como «Natural Running», «Parkour», «Pose» y evidentemente el Chi Running se enfocan en hacer que el cuerpo no vaya en contra de las leyes naturales. Cuando corremos con la postura incorrecta, estamos constantemente aplicando una fuerza negativa a nuestros músculos y huesos. Con cada paso que damos, tenemos la opción de frenar el movimiento fluido del cuerpo al caer totalmente vertical sobre el terreno, o lo que resulta mejor, con cada paso propulsarnos hacia adelante y utilizar el terreno como un resorte. Chi running logra alinear al cuerpo para evitar sobrecargas donde no deben estar. Todo parte desde una postura correcta que evita: Caer sobre el suelo demasiado fuerte. La idea es que hagas prácticamente cero ruido cuando corres, de esta manera minimizando el impacto. Caer en el talón del pie. Al perfeccionar la cadencia de 180 pasos por minuto sin importar la velocidad, estas promoviendo dar pasos pequeños y seguramente caerás siempre en la parte media del pie hacia adelante. Lesiones como periostitis tibial, tendinitis del tendón de Aquiles entre otras son evitadas.   ¿Donde puedo tomar una clase? An Interview with Dr Nicholas Romanov, author and creator of The Pose Method of Running. Dr Romanov is arguably one of the first running coaches to identify the importance of shifting to a Natural Running style to reduce injuries and improve performance. Pose Running is named relative to the “Pose” position a runner creates as the initiate proper running technique which is describes as an “S” like body position with slightly bent knees with the driving leg lifting the foot under the hip.  The matra is Pose-Fall-Pull.  This technique allows gravity to act as the primary force of forward movement.  Being that our show is named The Natural Running Network Live, this interview should make for a very interesting as well as informative for our audience.

You hang up your shoes and try natural running, of course. In 2000, Dr. Mark Cucuzzella did just that. After suffering for years from arthritis in his toes, Mark was told by his doctors to stop his running. However, Mark couldn't give up on his passion, so he began to research and scientifically explore how natural running shoes could help save his career. What Dr. Mark found was nothing short of remarkable. By running barefoot and in natural running shoes he was able to run pain-free and injury-free for the first time in years. In this podcast, we interview Dr. Mark Cucuzzella and find out exactly what he did, why it worked, and how you can do the same. Dr. Cucuzzella is widely considered to be one of the leading experts on how and why to incorporate and transition to minimalist running. Mark is a Professor of Family Medicine at West Virginia University School of Medicine.
