Join us for a wonderful three days in Manchester in November Get in touch at https://themindfactor.net/the-certification-course/ The conversation will REALLY get you thinking about the way you approach your game on the greens. In our time together we looked at: The difference in brain activity just before the stroke is made between successful and unsuccessful putters. Why doubt over the ball is so detrimental to performance How this increases brain activity which then compromises your stroke Why a line on the ball may not be the most effective strategy Why practicing with putting aids and gadgets can be of limited value The role of the eyes in supplying information for your putt The value of ‘quiet eye' Busy eyes make for a bust brain How to train to then perform Why you shouldn't just keep hitting putt after putt when you are training This is a really refreshing and far reaching conversation that could potentially apply to the whole of your game A lot of what Laura and Caesar had to say resonated with many of the ideas presented by Gary Nicol and myself in the Lost Art of Putting Caesar Bayliss has been a PGA professional for over 20 years and specializes in putting. How ‘Socratic' questioning could help transform your game Today we have on the show internationally renowned coach Nick Bradley who has written a fantastic new book called ‘The 50 secrets to GREAT GOLF you don't know about YET!' Download Mind Caddie for hundreds of short audio lessons and exercises produced by Karl and start improving your mental game the same way as six major champions: https://mindcaddie.onelink.me/7xjx/znldwgbi One of the secrets really stood out to me Socratic questioning and how being prepared to ‘go into' the problem you have with your game could actually help find a solution What would you ‘need' to do to slice the ball? Can you actually experience what you would need to do to deliberately create the ‘mistake'? This area of enquiry was just one of the fascinating topics that we managed to cover in a really wide ranging conversation: Why trying to get rid of the ‘ego' is the ultimate ego trip Playing to your strengths as a coach The uses and misuses of technology Becoming more of a SHOT coach Giving our shots a ‘name' The problem with ‘Method Coaching' and why this is perhaps the least effective coaching model The dangers of relying on our memory Nick has had a very long and distinguished coaching career, studying with some of the world's best coaches like David Leadbetter and then going on to coach top players such as Justin Rose He is a deep thinker about the game and is refreshingly honest and forthright in his opinions of what we need to do to get the best from our game To find out more about Nick go to https://www.bradleygolf.com/ Get a copy of his latest book ‘The 50 Secrets to Great Golf you don't know about YET' Are you going to take ACTION and become a Certified Mind Factor coach? Join us for a wonderful three days in Manchester in November Get in touch at https://themindfactor.net/the-certification-course/ We are often overloaded with demands on time How can we get better at focusing our attention on the RIGHT things? The current epidemic of burnout Self doubt and how even the very best can experience this on a regular basis What is REALLY driving the feeling of not being ‘good enough'? Coming from a position of SCARCITY and LACK Needing external validation for what we do Quietening the inner critic and allowing yourself to seek excellence Following a path that really matters to you Mastering and exploring your craft Why ‘Enough' isn't just sitting back and doing nothing The need to REST and RESTORE How to avoid the trap of ‘working harder' in terms of your training as opposed to training efficiently Within the theme we have of looking at the game differently Becky provides a refreshingly alternative perspective. Nothing in the conversation suggests we shouldn't aim to maximise our skills but it does mean coming at it from a position of ‘enough' as opposed to a position of lack. Join us for a wonderful three days in Manchester in November Get in touch at https://themindfactor.net/the-certification-course/ Here is a great quote from his website "You see … before I became a golfer I was a pioneer in the executive coaching field, My experience working with professional athletes and corporate leaders revealed this truth: Feelings precede thoughts. Or, to put it differently, you can't think positive when you feel negative." Kent is a good golfer in his own right and he charts his own personal experiences of the game with a big following of players. The first time we spoke it was clear that Kent and I shared many similar trains of thought. In particular the importance of JOURNALING We had a truly memorable conversation discussing the numerous benefits of being a regular journal taker. It is something we have spoken about on this show and promoted heavily in the Mind Caddie app We discussed The difference between THINKING about gratitude and actually FEELING it The ability to be playful when you are hitting your shots Why journaling can help us to balance out the overload of information that is coming at us in the modern world Why evolution got us to focus on the negative and our mistakes How our thinking patterns become so habitual and how journaling can help shift this Why BALANCE is so important from an evolutionary perspective Why journaling can help us to still get something out of a bad outcome day on the course The ability to develop spontaneous acceptance and to be able to be NEUTRAL to the variety of outcomes. The importance of acknowledging the GOOD shots and the good experiences If this was your LAST round of golf how would you want to experience it? So much of what Kent says is based in real world experience and makes for that most elusive of qualities common sense. When you listen to him you realise just how precious this NEXT opportunity is to play the game. Take the plunge and embark on a year of journaling and just see what it can do for your game. The Skill of ACCEPTANCE and why it is SO important to develop – Karl Morris Why you will always fall short of your true capability without this skill Thanks for joining me on today's Brain Booster which is a solo run from me. Are you going to take ACTION and become a Certified Mind Factor coach? Join us for a wonderful three days in Manchester in November Get in touch at https://themindfactor.net/the-certification-course/ At the heart of so much of what we have been discussing is the SKILL of acceptance. If we are not willing to be ok with the variability of potential outcomes the game can throw at us then we will always be at less than our best. Acceptance is NOT resignation. We are not trying to pretend to be happy after a bad shot or a missed putt but we ARE willing to deal with the reality and move on So many people are sold the idea that this swing fix or this ‘secret' will PROTECT them from a poor outcome yet in reality NOTHING will ever protect us from the need to develop a robust relationship to undesired outcomes Acceptance is an ongoing set of skills that requires a diligent and consistent approach Today I will share with you the building blocks of acceptance Skills that have helped many players at all levels to ACCESS their current skills Why the skill acceptance begins well before the round starts Why ‘contamination' of your shots is such an issue The value of journaling Why making a commitment to develop acceptance is so important What acceptance does to your physiology Why the expression of your technical skill is dependent on your acceptance skills An opportunity for you to really bring together and clarify some of the key Brain Booster concepts of the previous few months HOW you can actually take action and release more of your capabilities ....Enjoy! It is great to welcome back onto the podcast my good friend Randy Joyner. Randy is one of the top coaches in the US and works with a host of great players including PGA Tour winner Derek Ernst We have spent many hours in the past discussing how his coaching shares so much similarity with the concepts of the Mind Factor. Join us in Manchester in November and become a CERTIFIED MIND FACTOR COACH – or simply come to improve your own game, go to : https://themindfactor.net/the-certification-course/ Randy has been kind enough to say how much the Mind Factor certification has helped his own evolution as a coach In his development into being a top coach Randy spent many hours immersed with the philosophies of the ‘Golf Machine'. The legendary book written by Homer Kelley in the late 1960's which has influenced so many of today's top coaches. On first impression the Golf Machine would seem to be totally at odds with many of the ideas we have discussed over the past few years on the Brain Booster. Yet with this conversation with Randy he gave me real clarity as to why it became such an important book and how with a clearer understanding it is actually much more simple in its practical application to the golfer. Also more importantly for Brain Booster listeners it becomes apparent listening to Randy how you can apply the principles of INTENTION ATTENTION and ATTITUDE within the framework of the Golf Machine We discussed : The THREE key principles of the Golf Machine The role of the RIGHT arm The benefit of RIGHT ARM only swings How to use ‘pressure' in the golf swing How you can link ATTENTION to right finger pressure throughout the swing How the SHOT links back to Golf Machine principles What is THE ultimate simplification? How the line and pace will REVEAL itself from a mind that is quiet The importance of a DAILY practice How ‘self observation' can be so transformative and allows you to understand the repetitive nature of the mind The FOUR FUNDAMENTAL ACTIONS How movement emerges from the ground Rooted in the feet, moves through the waist and expressed with the hands. How Tiger Woods learned to embrace the CHAOS It is good to be back with you again on the Brain Booster and today we have a special guest in the company of Claude Harmon. Claude has coached some of the game's greatest players including Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepke. He provides us today with some wonderful insights from both a coaching and playing perspective. Mind Caddie APP: A new weekly highlight for training this winter. Every week Karl provides theory along with practical exercises you can use to improve your game during the off-season https://apps.apple.com/app/mind-caddie/id1567910600 A great perspective on LEARNING Claude vividly describes his unique coaching apprenticeship. By his own admission he never played the game to any great level but had perhaps the ultimate coaching environment in which to learn. To be able to watch his father Butch Harmon coach day in and day out must have been something else. Watching Butch coach the likes of Steve Elkington and Greg Norman in the early days which then led to his association with Tiger Woods and then on to players like Phil Mickelson and Ricky Fowler. Claude describes how he was actually there when Butch gave the very first lesson to a young Woods. He provides some real nuggets on how to keep a difficult game simple. We discuss: Solving the coaching puzzle Looking for the ONE thing that will have the most impact How we can easily become overloaded with technical data Being smart enough to keep it simple Why many coaches invest in making the game DIFFICULT Not falling into the ‘aesthetic trap' The perfect position MYTH When to leave a golf swing alone The difference between ‘technique' and ‘execution' Learning from the Tiger Tiger Woods incredible honesty about his game His desire to LEARN, how he loved the RANDOM nature of the game. His overall philosophy for the game and how he LOVED the chaos A great session with a coach at the top of his game. Today on the Brain Booster we are joined by former European Open Champion and supporter of the podcast Andrew Murray to discuss the ‘state of the game' and what that means for you and YOUR game. The session was recorded a few weeks ago just after the 150th Open at St Andrews but the content of our conversation is very relevant to your game today. We talk about Open champion Cameron Smith and his wonderful approach on the greens The difference between working on HOW to get the ball to the hole as opposed to WHERE you want the ball to go The absolute heart of the ‘Lost Art of Putting' How Rory has freed up his short game with the help of Brad Faxon Tiger Woods and his legacy to the game What impact has he REALLY had? How we can truly grow the game of golf We seem to be at the moment in something of ‘crisis mode' with the game as we hear so much about the detrimental effect that LIV is having on our game. But could there be some positives? Could we look to see how the game and the experience of the game can be improved? How could YOU get involved in growing the game at the grassroots level? Stay in the game What you can do to make sure you KEEP playing golf As ever with Andrew the conversation was wide ranging and informative. The visual illusion created at set up Why we need to create the CLARITY of the task How we can then fit the way we hold the club and address the ball based on that clarity Why good ‘basics' doesn't mean we will play good golf Developing skills through awareness, slower swings, shorter swings As usual with Kendal a really thought provoking and engaging conversation Enjoy To find out more about Kendal go to https://instinctivegolfcoaching.co.uk/who-we-are/ To become a Certified Mind Factor coach go to www.themindfactor.com To find out more about the golfers health screen with Pall Mall Pall Mall's health screen packages assess your blood profile, highlight any markers for certain cancers, check your heart health, stroke risk, other major organ health and much more. Today we have a great show lined up as we welcome back Rupert Spira. This session is a recording of a live webinar I did with Rupert recently discussing the nature of the ‘Zone Experience' As ever with Rupert it was a wonderfully engaging and thought provoking session full of insight to be applied to all areas of your life. Rupert Spira is the author of numerous books including ‘Being Myself' and ‘Being aware of being aware' His most recent book is ‘You are the happiness you seek' As a spiritual teacher he explores the concepts of ‘Non Duality' and the ‘Direct Path' to experience. He travels worldwide hosting retreats and teachings around the nature of being and experience. What is the Zone? More importantly how can we access its qualities on a more frequent basis How do we interact with the environment? Do we see the course as a ‘friendly place'? What place does ambition have in the Non Dual approach? Being completely absorbed in something you LOVE to do Are we seeking happiness in all the wrong places? A truly great conversation that will engage your mind to ask some deeper questions. Enjoy!! How you can use statistics to get the VERY best from your game What REALLY makes a difference to your scoring? Today we are joined on the Brain Booster with a wonderful guest in the shape of stat wizard Lou Stagner. A self-proclaimed ‘golf nut and data nerd', Stagner has become an influential figure in the golf data space by combining a lifelong passion for the game with his background as a business intelligence and analytics executive. He has a really strong presence on Twitter where he posts many valuable and insightful statistics to really make you think about your game. So many of us place undue pressure on our games because of the expectations we carry around with us. The perception of what is a ‘good' shot or a ‘makeable putt' is often completely distorted and out of touch with the actual reality of the game. The very best players in the world miss more putts than they hole from 8 feet. They miss 1 in every 3 greens. Yet we fall into so many perception traps that harm our state of mind on the course. We make poor decisions based on our perceptions of reality as opposed to the actual truth. We explore Why it is vital to know YOUR actual shot patterns and habits The biggest myths surrounding statistics How trying to find the ‘right side' of the fairway could be costing you lots of shots What are THE most difficult putts? The best strategy for par 3's, 4's and 5's What TIGER focused on at his very best The difference between a 90 shooter and a scratch player. It's not what you think. The often overlooked element of FUN and why it is so important to your game Such a great session with so much to get you thinking about your game To find out more about Lou go to Lou Stagner (Golf Stat Pro) (@LouStagner) · Twitter https://twitter.com/LouStagner To become a CERTIFIED MIND FACTOR coach go to www.themindfactor.com
Today we welcome back onto the Brain Booster my good friend Vin Harris. The previous shows with Vin and the discussions around mindfulness have been so well received and I believe this one will be no exception. We get the chance to look at chaos, uncertainty and impermanence in your game and in the game of life. We seem to be living now in such a chaotic world. Nothing seems to be solid and reliable and the old models seem inappropriate. Uncertain economics, worrying international conflict. So many changes which can be really disturbing. Our thoughts can become so unsettled. We can end up in a ‘sea of thought' and this type of thinking can easily follow us out onto the golf course When our mind is so busy it becomes increasingly difficult to be PRESENT to the next shot in front of you. What can we do about it? How can we begin to have a different relationship to our thinking so we can NOTICE our thinking as opposed to being lost in the endless flow of images and sensations. Vin provides us with a CALM and SAFE voice of reason to help us navigate the uncertainty. When we make peace with the uncertainty things seem to settle down We look again at GRATITUDE and how this idea is not just a flaky concept but an essential element of great performance How to care without worrying How to get out of the way of ourselves How to basically be a better friend to ourselves both on and off the course. A wonderful session with a man who has trained with some of the foremost Buddhist and Meditation teachers over the past 40 years or so As always you will gain so much listening to the wise words of Vin Harris Vin Harris was involved in writing and editing “Mindful Heroes – stories of journeys that changed lives”. The authors share their inspiring stories of how mindfulness has been applied to a variety of setting across Education, Health, Business, Sport, Creative Arts and Community work. The book includes Vin's chapter “Its Golf…but not as we know it: Golf as a mindfulness practice and a metaphor for life” and an introduction to the Sport section by Karl. Vin has offered to send listeners to the Brain Booster Podcast the eBook versions of these two chapters. To claim your free chapters or if you want to learn more about Mindfulness for Golfers you can contact Vin by email vinharris.hkt@gmail.com For details of an annual golf week that Vin helps to facilitate go to Home - Fairway to Heaven (spiritualgolf.com) To become a CERTIFIED MIND FACTOR coach Come and join us either in Manchester or at the Olympic Club in San Fransisco Go to www.themindfactor.com
I absolutely guarantee you will find today's Brain Booster one of the most valuable sessions you have ever heard from all the shows we have done. We are joined by top neuroscientist Dr Izzy Justice the author of GYRA Golf who works with numerous PGA Tour players on their mental game. Dr Justice explains how the most cutting edge discoveries in neuroscience can make a MASSIVE difference to your game and the execution of your shots. Our conversation moved in so many fascinating directions and many ‘missing pieces' were put in place for me with what he had to say. Izzy is the creator of the ‘Brain Trackman' a device that allows him to measure a golfers brain activity both before, during and after a shot. The Brain Trackman takes away the guesswork and gives us an actual concrete and factual insight into what our brain do when we perform well and perhaps more importantly when we get stuck and in our own way. During the session we looked at: The myth of ‘muscle memory' and how it is your brain that creates every single golf shot or putt How high brain wave frequencies are THE key reason why you do not perform at your best Alpha and Theta Brain waves as an entry point into the zone What ACTUALLY happens in your brain when you take a golf lesson and why you need to REALLY understand both learning and more importantly RETRIEVAL How Sleep is such a vital element to improving your game Why the way MOST golfers practice does NOTHING to help you in the retrieval process Why practicing AFTER you have played golf could actually be damaging your game Why PUTTING training aids are largely ineffective from a neuroscience perspective What you should be focusing your attention on to hole more putts Dr. Izzy Justice is a Sports Neuroscientist who has authored 8 books over the course of 30 years on the topic of Emotional Intelligence. He was the first to integrate EQ into sports and athletic performance. He has trained and certified over 300 coaches in EQ in a wide array of sports disciplines worldwide. He has worked with athletes, coaches, and teams in NASCAR, Tennis, Soccer, Golf, Lacrosse, Basketball, Triathlon, NFL, MLB, Olympians, and many collegiate level programs. Dr. Justice's primary work is working in Corporate America with leaders of companies integrating EQ into the workplace Contact Dr. Justice: drjustice@gyragolf.com To find out more about Dr Izzy Justice go to www.gyragolf.com To become a Certified Mind Factor coach go to https://themindfactor.net/the-certification-course/
It is great to be back with you again on the Brain Booster. Today we have with us a good friend and colleague from Ireland David Kearney I have known David over 20 years and in that time he has forged for himself a great career at the top of the coaching ladder. We get the chance to discuss his work for the Women's National Team in Ireland He has recently published a wonderful book called ‘The Golfing Buddha' It is a remarkable read detailing his journey as a coach culminating in a journey to the Olympic Games in Japan with the Irish Women's team The book has so many qualities but perhaps most of all the honesty with which David shares with us his journey as a player and coach The highs and the lows The good times and the not so good At times the frustrations in trying to get the best out of himself and the players he has worked with We get the chance to talk about the role mentors have played in his life The good people along the way The value and impact a single sentence can have on the trajectory of your career or your experience of the game David is extremely well read and has experienced working with some of the top coaches in the game The influence of Buddhism on his thinking and attitude The concept of ‘right action' How mentally we fall into traps that create so much suffering Mindfulness and the ability to be able to notice your thinking as opposed to just reacting to your thoughts Developing equanimity Working with junior players The tough role of being a parent How coaches can best support promising junior players You will find a tremendous warmth and wisdom in David's book which shines brightly in this podcast. Today we welcome onto the Brain Booster one of the top performance psychologists in the world Dr Raymond Prior He works with numerous PGA Tour Players as well as top athletes from a wide cross section of different sports He is also in big demand from corporate executives and show biz entertainers He and I have recently been guests on the Hal Sutton podcast ‘Be the right club today' where I heard him speak and felt it was essential to get him onto the Brain Booster We both have a similar view of the importance of ACCEPTANCE and the huge benefits potentially to your game We got the chance to discuss What is acceptance? More importantly what is it NOT? It doesn't mean we don't care It doesn't mean we are resigned to our fate How acceptance is actually the gateway to the present moment The link to a high performance state of mind How acceptance allows you to deal with the REALITY of what is Being able to play THIS shot in THIS moment from a neutral state of mind Why your brain is TERRIBLE at multi-tasking Why our brain is designed to move away from perceived danger Playing freely when we are present to our experience How brain wave frequency is the critical key to performance Releasing your CURRENT skills is all about being able to create stable brain wave frequency. Why practice in a high brain wave frequency is a total waste of time Embracing the chaos BEFORE the game as a way of reducing brain wave frequency What ‘negative surprise' does for our game A really wonderful session with Raymond that will leave you with some REALLY special tools to help your game. Thank you for joining me on the Brain Booster and on today's show we have a solo session. I often get asked to do these episodes and I wanted to share with you a concept dear to my heart and one that I believe can be really valuable to you. Jordan Peterson has called it a ‘Noble Aim' Deciding what is important to you What is truly important about the direction you want your life to take So important that you are prepared to invest fully your time and life energy To get real clarity on this is SO important Yet once you have this clarity it is then vital that you ‘bury the goal' It seems a PARADOX Yet this is THE Key to improvement Because when you ‘bury the goal' you can then absorb yourself in TODAY To have the skill of ACCUMULATING GOOD days This sounds easy Yet VERY VERY few truly have the skill to do this We let the days drift by We don't make the most of the single opportunity THIS day provides To gain excellence at GOOD DAYS you need to understand the importance BEGINNINGS and ENDINGS The START of your day will determine SO much about the quality of your day What do YOU do in the first hour? Does it set you up for success? It is exciting to announce that we have just finished the final book in the ‘Lost Art' trilogy. The Lost Art of the Short Game will be available in the autumn so it seemed a really good idea to get back onto the Brain Booster fellow author Gary Nicol. Gary has a wealth of experience in coaching from his time on the European Tour working with some of the best players in the world to his current position of coaching from one of the most beautiful golfing locations on earth Archerfield in Scotland We have both been greatly touched by the feedback we have received from the two previous books, The Lost Art of Putting and the Lost Art of Playing golf. It seems we have been able to connect a number of golfers back to the source of the joy of creating shots and putts. Creating shots and putts in YOUR way as opposed to a prescribed method engineered by someone else. On today's show we dive a bit deeper into all things Lost Art What have we actually LOST? More importantly how do we FIND it again? How we lost connection with the real heart and soul of the game Looking more specifically at the SHORT GAME We had the great honour to have the legend of wedges Bob Vokey write the introduction for us to the book. He stressed the importance of knowing what the club in your hand is meant to do and HOW to use it. Gary describes this perfectly This simple understanding will make a BIG difference in your ability to go out and CREATE some great short game shots We look into the role of imagination The often over looked aspect of the game A great session with Gary his wisdom and practical common sense always shine through in his words To find out more about the books go to www.thelostartofgolf.com To find out more about Gary Nicol go to www.performanceprinciples.co.uk To become a CERTIFIED MIND FACTOR coach go to www.themindfactor.com

Today we have on the show Dicken Bettinger We go into some fascinating areas discussing the power of thought and the effect it has on your game and on your life. We discuss the origins of the THREE PRINCIPLES as proposed by Syd Banks Dicken became a licensed clinical psychologist in 1983 and retired his psychotherapy practice after working as a psychologist for 31 years. Twenty-eight years ago he met Sydney Banks who had an enlightenment experience where he realized the Three Principles that underlie all human experience. Dicken had finally found universal principles that he could teach anyone. He was grateful to find something that was simple in nature yet had the profound effect of raising the quality of a person's life. He feels fortunate that for 23 years he was able to learn directly from Sydney Banks. In 2008 Dicken received a Certificate of Competency from Mr. Banks authorizing him to teach the Three Principles. We discuss: How thought creates our reality The nature of our mind How it is futile to try to ‘control' your mind To be able to let the mind just ‘be' and get on with the task at hand How the wisdom of the body can be encouraged The freedom of PLAY This is a wonderful session with Dicken He is clearly a man of great integrity and you can pick up from the delivery of his words just how much he embodies the work of Syd Banks You can only gain by enjoying the episode To find out more about Dicken go to https://3principlesmentoring.com/bio.html To become a Certified Mind Factor coach go to https://themindfactor.net/product/mind-factor-course-video-training/
Today on the Brain Booster we are joined by one of the world’s greatest sports photographers Dave Cannon. To pay tribute to the legendary Seve Ballesteros. Dave has produced a masterpiece of a book called ‘Seve – His life through the lens’ containing some of the most wonderfully iconic pictures of the great man. From his early days in Perdrena, Spain through a wonderful career on the European and PGA Tour to the tragic loss of his life ten years ago to the ravages of brain cancer. Perhaps the single most iconic golf picture of all time, the ‘matador pose’ as Seve holed the winning putt on the final green at St Andrews in 1984 was taken by Dave Cannon. He shares his anxiety of wondering if he had ‘got’ the picture in the pre digital technology days of rolls of film and dark room development. We get to look back on Dave’s amazing career and how almost by accident he became a great sports photographer. The people who helped him along the way. The building of his skill and his craft. So many parallels to building skill in your own game or your own business. The link with his own golf and then ultimately to the great friendship he developed with Seve Ballesteros over many glorious years. We discuss a very moving story of Dave spending a day photographing Seve on the beach at his home in Pedrena. Going back to the place where it all began. Learning to play the game with a rusty old 3 iron on the beach in Northern Spain The sheer delight Seve had recreating those iconic moments as he made his own ‘golf world’, of self made holes and flags on the windswept beach. It is a moving, funny and sad story all at the same time as we ponder the cruel way he was taken from us at such an early age. As we have said before on the Brain Booster reminding us all of our mortality and the absolute precious nature of time and opportunity. How much of a dedicated family man Seve was and how he loved to spend time with his own children. His radiant smile was never to be forgotten and his legacy to the game of golf will stand for all time. It is important to keep the memory alive for the current generation to understand just what an influence he was. The book is literally a work of art. Seve – His life through the lens. Peter has just recently released a great book called ‘Trust and Let Go’ A collection of his thoughts about coaching over the past 50 years or so. The title is wonderful and sums up what we could all consider as a useful direction to go with our game and indeed our life. Trust and Let Go! With Peter I had the chance to discuss his great career and the influence of certain people along the way. Not least the great John Jacobs Peter had the opportunity as a young golf pro to work for and with John. It must have been an incredible time. Yet Peter took that opportunity with both hands He made the most of an opportunity presented by fate. It is a great message to us all When the chance comes along to take it with both hands Trust and Let Go! Peter went on to run incredibly successful golf schools over many years at Barnham Broom in Norfolk He was a pioneer in the world of golf schools More recently he has been in Spain at El Rompido A beautiful part of the world still coaching as enthusiastically as ever In our session Peter’s passion shines through His insights are very valuable You will gain a lot from listening to his wise words To get a copy of Peter’s book on Amazon UK go to https://tinyurl.com/vkr3s9my To become a Certified Mind Factor coach Go to https://themindfactor.net/the-certification-course/

Today we are joined on the Brain Booster by coach Dylan Bawden I caught up with him to discuss the contents of his great book ‘Hit the Ball’ What a GREAT title for a golf book!! We discuss the problems and limitations of coaching with models The ‘scientific method’ of thinking which is so entrenched in the West and for so many can lead to endless frustration. Over emphasis on what is ‘right’ Instead of exploring what is right for YOU ‘Hit the Ball’ it should be as simple as that but we find ever more ingenious ways to make the game more complicated. Dylan has some great ideas to remedy this. You will enjoy and get a lot from the session Dylan Bawden has been awarded Fellow membership of the PGA, trained with Vivien Saunders OBE, British Open Winner. Studied Batchelor of Science in Golf at Kingston university. After 20 years of research in the Art of Learning golf he has finally published the book Joseph Dylan Educure. Today’s Brain Booster is a great session with highly renowned Canadian coach Shawn Clement He has some wonderful points to make about WHERE you focus your attention when trying to improve your game. A common theme on the Brain Booster He has some wonderful insights at his website www.wisdomingolf.com As Shawn said: The most important tool that started me properly on this journey was the experience I had from age 17 with the Canadian Ski Patrol and their relentless passion in making sure you knew what you were doing when treating a victim with a broken limb on the ski hill before transporting to hospital with vital information for the Emergency MD. This information helped guide me through the maze of golf instruction that was based purely on opinions that were based on assumptions of how the human body works. To this day, we do not have any documents, seminars, manuals on basic anatomy in the field of golf instruction which is very disturbing considering we are on the front lines of your abilities to learn this game and play for life! WISDOM IN GOLF, where the secrets to your best golf game bliss are backed by science, neurology, medicine, and all other sports and disciplines. We discuss: Why focusing on body part manipulation will always end in disaster. Discover that simply changing your focus to simple tasks will help your performance soar, especially under pressure! How you are NOT DEFECTIVE and how you have been portrayed as needing to be fixed all these decades! Why YOUR ANATOMY WAS MADE TO PERFORM GOLF MOVEMENTS. Many of you may remember Louis Oosthuizen and the RED DOT! Winning the British Open in 2010 The use of colour in performance has always fascinated me and today we welcome to the podcast John Glenn who will take that exploration to another level. How could the use of colour potentially transform your game? John has spent the best part of 20 years involved in the golf industry looking at ways to enhance learning and performance. In November 2016 together with PGA Professional Kevin Merry, they would spend a lot of time experimenting and look for a way to simplify how Golf was being taught, as they felt it was becoming too technical for many golfers. This would lead them to design and develop their very own Teaching Concept using a unique externally focused colour coded system that would prove to change the way people play, gaining instant feedback and fast track results. Kevin and John would progress their ideas from a few prototypes to a reality and shortly after then forming the company Colour Path Golf. They both decided to leave their coaching roles in 2018 to focus full time on developing the concept on a global scale. Johns mission is to bring more people into the game and make starting and improving at golf a whole lot easier through simple to follow visual instructions which to date is proving to make a huge difference with the teaching concept being delivered by a team of Colour Path Golf certified instructors worldwide. John has a clear objective in the world of coaching, to continue to build on developing the ultimate coaches community/networking group where best practice and new creative ideas are shared regularly through teaching in the language of colour. Today we are joined on the Brain Booster by a VERY special guest Doug Lemov. Doug is a former teacher and school principal. He helped found Uncommon Schools, a network of high performing schools in under privileged communities. His book ‘Teach like a champion 2.0’ describes techniques used by exceptional teachers. It has sold more than a million copies and been translated into a dozen languages. His other books include ‘Perfect Practice : 42 Rules for getting better and ‘Reading Reconsidered’. He played football at Hamilton college where he says he was the worst player of the decade! His latest book which we discuss today is called ‘The Coach’s Guide to Teaching’ Doug has had a major influence on many teachers around the world and our discussion today can only help you in your quest to be better at ANYTHING. We had a wonderful chat around some key elements of Doug’s book. Most notably the area around ‘forgetting’. As coaches and players we ignore this crucial element at our peril. The fact is we forgot most things. Most of our learning does not stick. To be efficient on the field of play learning needs to be embedded into our long term memory. We want and need to be on auto pilot to be able to perform at our best. Trying to hold strategy in short term memory is a poor way to perform. Doug reveals some brilliant strategies to make learning stick. To make your training session more effective. This is so important to consider. A great session with a great teacher!! Today we are joined on the Brain Booster by Certified Mind Factor coach Michel Put (50) is a PGA Golf professional, certified Mindfactor coach, entrepreneur, golfer, guide and organizer of various music events near Amsterdam. As a coach, he has been looking for the Holy Grail in golf instruction for over a quarter of a century. How to make golfers more consistent. Achieving more joy and happiness in their game. In 2015 he came into contact with a concept that turned out to contain this holy grail. A concept with which everything that is complicated can be simplified. MOT, Moment Of Truth, since 2019 transformed into: True Groove | Het Nieuwe Golfen….The new way to play golf.. Unfortunately, as a cross thinker he was also denounced, mocked and even banned from the sports world. And the more he stood for his philosophy, the more he appeared to stand for it alone. Yet he also managed to find his way there. Because he says; "If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change." Recently his company teamed up with Cobra/Puma golf. The concept of ONE Length golf clubs completes the philosophy of the method of True Groove | Het Nieuwe Golfen. And fits perfectly with our core values: innovative, fun, liberating and rebellious. In this podcast When the light bulb was invented in 1878, the world was turned upside down. Candle manufacturers were angry, and many consumers were skeptical. In this podcast I am going to talk to Michel Put. Someone who comes up with a similar story some 140 years later. Together with Joost Steenkamer, colleague professional and Dutch Golf Federation talent coach, he developed a new way of playing golf. And this time too the world is turned upside down. And this time too, people are angry. What did the gentlemen discover? Listen to Michel's remarkable story and learn how to get more joy in your golf and in your life. You will also learn in this podcast: The components of Deep Practice. Why you should make training more difficult than reality How to accelerate your learning process ten times faster/Myeline Why you don't see what you don't know Got excited and want to know more about True Groove? He has taught at some of the top golf clubs in the Bay Area, which include The Olympic Club and Sonoma. He has also written several instructional articles for Golfwrx.com and Secret Golf. Kelvin works with his students to develop efficient motion. Besides swing and short game instruction, Kelvin works with his players a LOT on the GOLF course. As we discuss seeing the golfer in the TRUE environment. Seeing how a player actually reacts. This includes mental preparation, developing practice routines and course strategizing. www.kelleygolf.com We discuss how you can develop your game with better training. How if you do wish to change some of your motion it is better to do as much as possible in the set up to TRIGGER better motion as opposed to consciously trying to manipulate the club into various positions. How the set up can dictate so much of your active motion Hitting angles and their effect How the downswing should be a reaction not a recovery Working with an impact bag A great session and a perfect time of year to look at some of these concepts Do YOU want to become a CERTIFIED Mind Factor coach? Today on the Brain Booster we have an extra special guest in the shape of former US Open champion Graeme McDowell. I have worked with G Mac now for the best part of 18 years and what a journey it has been. It was wonderful to take the time with Graeme to look back over the story so far and for him to reflect so honestly about the key lessons he has learned in his time out on the PGA and European Tour. I promise you the insights he shares with us have the potential to make a BIG difference to the way you think about your game. We discuss : The key influences in the early days of his career – the vital role of mentors The role of his environment Growing up on the beautiful links of Royal Portrush and the effect that had Wanting to get better and being prepared to work at his ‘mental game’ The role ‘strong images’ have played in his mind. This ONE insight alone is GOLD How under the most extreme pressure of Majors and Ryder cups how he has still been able to function despite the discomfort We talk about how and why effective routines have proven so important. What he has learned about ‘tendencies under pressure’. This again is a KEY element if you want to improve your game. When he had lost his putting and in danger of losing playing status how ONE simple technique turned things around It was a really great conversation Time flew The topics flowed You will gain a LOT for your own game and your desire to get closer to your true ability Enjoy To take action NOW and become a CERTIFIED MIND FACTOR coach go to https://themindfactor.net/certification-course-2020/
Over the past number of weeks on the Brain Booster we have had a reoccurring theme. That of ACCEPTANCE. Steven Yellin mentioned it as a pre requisite for the emergence of fluid motion. Dr Joe Parent mentioned it as a requirement to experience Zen Golf. I wanted today then to take the opportunity to dive deeper into what acceptance is and perhaps more importantly what it isn’t. So much of the benefits of acceptance are paradoxical in nature. We need to be careful we don’t confuse acceptance with resignation. We are also not in any way saying acceptance is not about aiming for good results. The Brain Booster is all about performance. What I do firmly believe is that acceptance can be a ‘reverse engineering’ of results. It can actually provide you with the environment whereby results emerge. In today’s show I look at how acceptance can actually help you to swing the club better Get more from your coaching Develop other areas of your life with acceptance How acceptance leads to ACTION How you create true freedom Hopefully today’s show brings together lots of the key concepts we have been discussing for many months on the Brain Booster Acceptance needs commitment and DAILY intention It is really beneficial to create accountability with a coach or mentor Do you want to become a Certified Mind Factor coach? Now you can ANYWHERE in the world Join us via a Live Feed for the ONLY certification this year 27th -29th November Take ACTION Go to https://themindfactor.net/certification-course-2020/
Today we joined on the Brain Booster by Dr Joe Parent. He is the author of one of the most successful mental game books of all time. Zen Golf was published over twenty years ago and still continues to sell worldwide. A new generation of players are enjoying a book published well before they were born! I had a great conversation with Dr Joe about the origins of the book and the influences he has had to his work. Joe teaches from a Buddhist philosophy applied to golf. The principles of mindfulness, meditation and awareness are key factors to his work. The great aspect to his teaching is he clearly comes from a practical and applied background. All of his ideas have been tested in the laboratory of real life. Out on the golf course, in the boardroom, real life experience not just theory. We got the chance to discuss his work with Vijay Singh and the journey to World No 1 when the game of golf was being totally dominated by Tiger Woods. What Vijay applied from the book that made such a difference to his game. How many of the key principles of mindfulness can be so helpful to your game? This is fundamental wisdom that has been around for many thousands of years but often ignored in the modern world of complexity for complexity sake. Why there is still a reluctance to look at the mental game and how it is too easy to blame all bad shots on your technique when in fact the ‘state’ you are in does not ALLOW you to access the swing you already have. The concept of ‘being present’ sounds so simple yet so few really understand what it actually means. Joe talks about specific ways to BE on a golf course. The opportunity golf gives us to learn so much about ourselves. How the breath is one of the single most potent areas of focus to release your performance. It was a delight to speak to Dr Joe. His wisdom will make a difference to your game. I just had to get Ryan Phillips back again. The level of interest was very strong. We had a great response to the show with Ryan Phillips talking about M.A.T. (muscle activation technique). A lot of interest. A lot of questions. A lot of potential opportunity. Ryan is one of only two trainers certified in M.A.T. in the UK He was trained by Greg Roskopf in the USA who has had amazing results with athletes for a number of years. Most noted for his recent work and the body transformation of Bryson DeChambau. Today we explore more about a fascinating subject of how simple isometric exercises can reactivate muscles that have been dormant or imbalanced for years. Muscle imbalance is a crucial area to consider. It is at the heart of EFFICIENT movement. Muscle imbalance creates a LOT of issues. It is why so many people are training in PAIN Why so many golfers have to stop playing. Why there are diminishing returns on your training efforts. We also look into the possibility of how your current training or stretching COULD be making things worse if you have a muscle imbalance and you are forcing yourself through a range of motion with compensations. However, once you have activated and balanced your muscle structure with M.A.T. you then potentially make tremendous progress as you can now GAIN so much from whatever mode of training your favour. I would go as far as to say that anyone who is really keen to get the best from their game should explore the potential with M.A.T. Essentially what you are doing is providing a tremendous foundation for all of your movement. You are working from a really solid foundation. Fascinating area to explore. It is good to be back with you again on the Brain Booster and today we have a VERY special guest with us. In the current situation facing us all of our daily lives have just been hit by a barrage of changes. Things we have taken for granted forever have been compromised and challenged. Our daily routines have been obliterated. Yet potentially this situation gives us a once in a lifetime opportunity to do some things that once we get out the other side COULD change our lives forever. We have the chance to really ask ourselves what are our GOOD HABITS and what are our BAD HABITS? Then more importantly to reflect on what we WANT our lives to look like when we emerge into whatever ‘normal’ becomes in the months ahead. We have a unique opportunity to REFLECT. Then to decide WHAT to change. This is why our guest today is so important one of the world’s LEADING experts on habit formation and control. Wendy Wood is a research psychologist who has devoted the last 30 years to understanding how habits work. She is Provost Professor of Psychology and Business at the University of Southern California. A 2008 Radcliffe Institute Fellow, and 2018 Distinguished Chair of Behavioral Science at the Sorbonne/INSEAD in Paris, Wendy has advised the World Bank, the Centers for Disease Control, and industries such as Proctor & Gamble and Lever Bros. Wendy completed her graduate degree in psychology at the University of Massachusetts. She went on to be the James B Duke Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at Duke University. Having published over 100 scientific articles, she received numerous awards for her research and teaching. In a wonderfully wide ranging chat we got the opportunity to discuss such issues as Why ‘friction’ is so important in the formation of your intended habits Why location matters more than we can possibly imagine How ‘understanding’ why you should change a habit does very little to make it happen Why disruption CAN be really beneficial All of the ideas that Wendy proposes are so practical but above all APPLICABLE Enjoy her wisdom To find out more about Wendy Wood and her work go to www.goodhabitsbadhabits.com To become a CERTIFIED MIND FACTOR coach get in touch with us as www.themindfactor.com
How SuperSpeed golf can improve your distance in your own back garden Today we are joined on the Brain Booster by Matt Masters from SuperSpeed golf. Matt is a PGA Professional and Certified Mind Factor coach. Whilst most of us are in this lockdown period and really wanting to be back out on the course I wanted to bring Matt on to the show to explain what you CAN still do in your own home to gain extra distance once you get back on to the fairways. The key principle of the Mind Factor still applies in the sense of finding ways to get the best out of the 24 hours in front of you even in the most challenging of situations. How CAN I still improve my game? This at the moment is a far better question than ‘When are we going to play again?’ The first question you have 100% control over the second you have ZERO control. SuperSpeed golf training has been taking the golf world by storm over the past few years with so many top players using the product and gaining incredible results. It is a science based protocol that involves a specific number of reps every other day. There is a clear and sequenced progression that you follow. More importantly this can be done in your own home. The idea behind SuperSpeed golf comes from extensive research and alignments with other sports such as baseball in terms of speed training. From a Mind Factor perspective, I also found many of Matt’s ideas and thoughts intriguing. Ideas that can be of benefit not just in terms of increasing club head speed but the freedom with which you play the game. When you embark on the SuperSpeed training you create a THOUGHT free flow of motion. You just LET GO You experience a great sequence in your swing as you are not trying to ‘place’ the club in various positions. I know you are going to gain a lot from spending time with Matt as we cover a lot of fascinating ground concerning game improvement. There is a SPECIAL offer for BRAIN BOOSTER listeners if you are interested in purchasing a set of SuperSpeed Golf Just e-mail Matt with the title BRAIN BOOSTER at Matt@superspeedgolf.com To join us on the FREE Zoom call for Brain Booster listeners e-mail me at karl@themindfactor.com This is limited to 50 places
We are living through some really challenging times at the moment. We are in unchartered territory. Life may well never be quite the same again. At times like this the value of a MENTOR could prove enormous. Today we have with us Performance Coach Ian Peek to discuss some truly fascinating areas. Why elite amateur players can often fail as professionals The support network and how vital this is The need to look at the WHOLE picture and not just the golf swing in isolation How a mentor can REALLY make a difference How those around us have such a tremendous influence on u The secret ingredients of How to get better as a coach The need to get very clear on your WHY For players why course time is so important The role of the coach on the GOLF COURSE Ian Peek’s vocation is that of supporting his clients in reaching their professional goals and assisting with their personal well-being. On today’s show we are joined by Mike Malone from TrackMan I have known Mike for a number of years we have spent a lot of time doing workshops and golf clinics together and we have stood on many practice grounds at European tour events. Time with Mike is always very engaging and more importantly informative. Today we get the chance to discuss what knowing the truth about your impact conditions can do for your game. Yes, video analysis can be useful but the way your golf swing looks is always open to the interpretation of another set of eyes. With a launch monitor such as TrackMan you just get the opportunity to find out exactly what your patterns and habits are. These patterns are CRUCIAL to your performance. Once you are armed with this information and knowledge you can take direct action to improve your game by improving the only thing that matters in your golf swing which is the conditions of impact. We also go the chance to discuss better ways to practice. More efficient use of your time and some really simple but effective thoughts on developing more skills in your game. I used to think that using launch monitors would make players become even more technical about the swing yet I have discovered over the past number of years spending time with people such as Mike when they are used correctly the opposite is actually true. With the correct use of launch monitors you can become so much more focused on creating shots as opposed to be endlessly obsessed with dissecting the positions in your swing I have gained a lot from Mike’s knowledge and his ability to interpret data in a simple but profoundly affective way and you get that very same opportunity today on the brain booster. Kieran is a qualified cycling and fitness coach, with certificates in HRV training from Heart Math, First Beat and Elite HRV and has trained in the use of HEG technology for addressing attention disorders. He still cycles for the top domestic racing team, TAAP Cervelo How does stress affect your performance? Do you know your own personal stress responses? How is your performance being held back by the stressors in your life? From poor sleep habits, diet and a poor training regime. How your game may be affected by stress for three to four hours prior to performance and surprisingly for three to four hours after a performance is over. With Kieran we get the chance to look at how heart rate variability can now be measured. As he says in the show unless you can measure something you cannot improve it. We discuss his own experiences in cycling and he shares some great ideas on how to improve your performance. How breathing is such a potent force in the battle to be in the right state to perform. What is the best breathing protocol for you as an individual? How you can use visualisation as a powerful tool before and after competition. How coaching teams with a ‘cookie cutter’ approach can be very limited. How and why it is so important to look at where each individual actually is to put together an effective training regime. A really interesting episode of the Brain Booster that will really get you thinking about your approach to excellence. In today’s episode, I have a return guest on the show. It really was a pleasure to sit down with Gary Nicol, former European Golf Tour coach and current professional golf coach and co-author of the best-selling golf book The Lost Art of Putting. Gary has a very distinct style that he brings to his coaching that is very much focused on asking rather than telling. Gary sets out to ask the right questions and by asking the right questions, he can get his clients to dig more deeply into their patterns of thought and habits that they might bring with them to the golf course. He does this to unlock answers within themselves in an effort to better understand their own golf games and the mindset that have developed and how this mindset might need to change or shift in order to bring about an improvement in their game. Even if you are not a golfer, you will benefit from hearing this episode as you will see Gary’s unique style come alive in this conversation. With 16 years experience on the European Golf Tour, Gary had the chance to coach some of the game’s greats and to learn alongside them. The framework that Gary brings to his coaching is about finding clarity and decluttering the mind in order to simplify the game and in doing so, help each of his clients genuinely experience more joy on the course. The game of golf is a lifetime pursuit that is meant to keep people physically active in their lives for as long as possible. Gary does a great job helping his clients understand this. However, when coaching the world’s elite golfers, it’s about giving them the edge they need to perform at their best in competition. Even with the elite that he has coached, he steers clear of being a swing technician and making the focus of his coaching specifically on technique. He works more on mindset, imagery, and creating success through the art of paying attention and being present with oneself. Much of Gary’s work is deeply rooted in the building blocks of peak performance psychology, mindfulness, and sports psychology. I want to thank Gary for his time, energy, and insight. He’s a quality person who embodies everything it means to be a lifelong learner. Hope you enjoy the episode with Gary. Thanks for listening. What could the ancient philosophies of the likes of Seneca, Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius have to do with your game in the modern world? Well maybe EVERYTHING These ancient philosophers may have made there utterances over two thousand years ago but they are more relevant in my opinion in today’s world than they have ever been. We look into a book called ‘The Daily Stoic’ by Ryan Holiday and reveal some absolute pearls of wisdom. ‘The circle of control’ We may have heard many time such clichés as ‘control the controllables’ but do we REALLY understand and apply the concepts on a daily basis? The Stoics would tell us that it is VERY simple in that there is really only ONE thing in your circle of control Not other people, not the economy, not your opponent and not even your body. The only thing we really get to have control over is THE MIND We then understand that central to this is our CHOICES The choices we make on a daily basis. The outside world will present ‘stuff’ to us That is a fact The weather is bad The person you are playing with is an idiot Play is slow The ball bounces to the left instead of the right We can go on and on Non of this is under our control BUT We can CHOOSE how we RESPOND It is in the choosing that we then take RIGHT ACTION We go from drowning in thought to TAKING ACTION We DO what we need to do in this moment here and now Does this mean we will win the tournament? NO But what it does mean is we win the more important battle The battle against ourselves We make informed choices about how to life THE GOOD life Enjoy the show today I had a great time putting it together and I hope you will find more than a few ideas that will make a BIG difference to you and your game Whatever that game is Do you want to become a Certified Mind Factor coach and make a BIG difference? In today’s show we have an EXEPTIONAL guest. Ed Coughlan is one of the world’s leading experts in SKILL ACQUISITION and his insights will prove incredibly beneficial to your quest in becoming better at almost anything. Based at the Cork institute of technology Ed has spent time with some of the leading practitioners of skill acquisition. He is both fascinating and engaging We had a wonderful discussion devoid of any ego just sharing information to help players improve. Ed’s route to Skill Acquisition started over 20 years ago as a coach and accelerated during his degree in Sport Science at Dublin City University (DCU) and his PhD in Skill Acquisition at the Research Institute for Sport & Exercise Science at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). He has studied under some of the world’s leading Skill Acquisition specialists; Dr Rick Shuttleworth, Dr Paul Ford and Prof. Mark Williams. And is also a guest lecturer in Skill Acquisition at University College Dublin (UCD). In the session we discuss how liberating it is to realise that so many skills CAN be learned if you put yourself in the right environment and your training is geared to transferability. We explore that fundamental question ‘does your practice transfer into the REAL world?’ We talk about developing the skill of resilience The ability to DEAL with whatever the game throws at you We talk about the limitations of trying to work on pieces of your technique from a bio mechanical perspective Creating rich learning environments Accumulating ‘good days’.. Ed has a very similar philosophy about maximising each and every day to move your game forwards How you CAN teach and old dog new tricks What the research says about learning skills as you get older IF the practice and the environment is set up correctly I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Ed and I recommend you sit back listen and enjoy the words of a true expert Ed can be contacted at Dredwardcoughlan.com Do YOU want to become a Mind Factor coach?
