It's The Ranch It Up Radio Show! Join Jeff Tigger Erhardt, Rebecca Wanner AKA BEC and their crew as they look into rebuilding the U.S. Cow herd. Plus, should we keep heifers or sell heifers and consumer demand for beef. They cover it all on this all new episode of The Ranch It Up Radio Show. Be sure to subscribe on your favorite podcasting app or on the Ranch It Up Radio Show YouTube Channel. USDA'S Plan To Rebuild The Nation's Beef Cow Herd The USDA is developing a plan to rebuild the nation's historically low beef cattle herd but will not produce direct payments to producers, according to Secretary Brooke Rollins. Rollins said “We have no current plants to offer any payment to beef producers. The government getting involved can completely distort the markets. No plan is even under consideration to insert ourselves through payments into the beef cattle industry.” Unquote. Instead, USDA's strategy will emphasize expanding access to working lands and developing risk-mitigation tools. Rollins said more details will be released in mid-October. Justin Tupper, Owner/Operator of St. Onge Livestock in St. Onge, South Dakota and President of the U.S. Cattlemen's Association shares his insight on retaining heifers vs. selling heifers and what producers need to look for in the year(s) to come. The show starts with Benjamin's review of the 2025 Audi SQ6 e-tron, a performance minded electric crossover which seems to nail so many thing, but falls short of its rivals in one key area; can you guess where? Benjamin's review of the EV expands to a wider discussion of its rivals that you don't want to miss. Then Sami shares his thoughts on the 2026 Honda Passport TrailSport, a rugged looking SUV with the same bones as the Pilot, but with fewer seats. While it looks tough and offers a few handy features that are useful off-road, Sami claims this isn't a true all-terrain SUV comparable to the likes of the Wrangler, 4Runner, Bronco and others. Then the guys wonder what's in the water at all the automaker HQs that make them so off-road-trim happy. The show finishes up by tackling a tough, Miata-minded question from a listener. Thanks for listening!

Recognizing and Addressing Cowherd Nutritional Deficiences Nutritional balance is a cornerstone of herd health and productivity. According to Dr. Kelly Sanders of Westway Feed Products, deficiencies often go unnoticed until performance suffers. Signs Of Nutritional Deficiencies In Cattle Poor Body Condition: Thin cows, visible ribs, or weak muscling. Reduced Fertility: Open cows, delayed cycling, or poor conception rates. Coat and Hoof Issues: Rough hair coats, brittle hooves, or slow shedding. Growth Challenges in Calves: Reduced weight gains or uneven growth patterns. How To Correct Deficiencies Forage Testing: Identify nutrient gaps in hay and pasture. Targeted Supplementation: Provide liquid or block supplements to balance protein, energy, and minerals. Management Adjustments: Ensure adequate feed availability during high-demand stages such as lactation and breeding. Dr. Sanders emphasizes that proactive nutrition not only boosts herd performance but also maximizes returns on investment in genetics. Planning For Feeder Cattle Marketing In 2026 Looking ahead, market planning is critical for cattlemen aiming to maximize returns on their calf crop. Kurt Donsbach of StoneX Financial shares insights on what producers should prepare for in 2026. Key Marketing Considerations Market Volatility: Expect fluctuations tied to feed costs, beef demand, and global trade. Uniformity Matters: Buyers continue to pay premiums for uniform, weaned, and preconditioned cattle. Leverage Genetics: Aligning bull selection with market goals increases calf value. Forward Contracts & Risk Management: Explore tools like futures, options, and video sales to lock in profitability. Action Steps For Producers Evaluate herd performance and set marketing goals early. Build buyer relationships now to maximize market options. Stay updated on market reports and risk management tools from trusted advisors like StoneX. The Balancer® Edge program, developed by the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA), is designed to add value for cattle producers by verifying Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics in their herds. To qualify, at least 75% of sires must be registered Gelbvieh or Balancer bulls, with each bull carrying a minimum of 25% Gelbvieh genetics. Verification Requirements for Producers Participation in Balancer® Edge requires simple but essential documentation, including: First and last calf born dates Headcount support Registration papers of sires to confirm Gelbvieh genetics This verification process ensures genetic accuracy and builds buyer confidence in Gelbvieh and Balancer-influenced cattle. Market Value Through Source & Age Verification (SAV) Since its launch in 2004, Source and Age Verification (SAV) has been a proven tool for U.S. beef producers. Balancer® Edge automatically qualifies cattle for SAV, opening doors to value-added marketing programs such as: China Export Verification Program Non-Hormone Treated Cattle (NHTC) Program for the EU Verified Natural Beef GAP 5-Step Animal Welfare and others Additionally, Balancer® Edge documentation can: Establish cattle age at the processor Serve as proof of maturity for grading purposes Ensure cattle qualify as A maturity if under 30 months of age at harvest Third-Party Verification With IMI Global The AGA has partnered with IMI Global, an accredited, independent verification company. IMI Global evaluates livestock attributes, production practices, and compliance to ensure unbiased and trustworthy certification for Balancer® Edge participants. By participating in the Balancer® Edge program, producers gain: Verified Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics Access to global and domestic value-added beef markets Documentation for age, source, and maturity verification Affordable verification backed by trusted third-party certification Find out more from the American Gelbvieh Association, and marketing programs by clicking HERE. Cattle Industry News Cattlemen's Beef Board Approves $38 Million Budget The Cattlemen's Beef Board (CBB) will invest approximately $38.1 million into programs of beef promotion, research, consumer information, industry information, foreign marketing, and producer communications during fiscal 2026, subject to USDA approval. In action at the end of its September 3-4 meeting in Denver, Colorado, the Beef Promotion Operating Committee (BPOC) approved Checkoff funding for a total of 14 "Authorization Requests" - or grant proposals - for the fiscal year beginning October 1, 2025. The committee, which includes 10 producers and importers from the Cattlemen's Beef Board and 10 producers from the Federation of State Beef Councils, also recommended full Cattlemen's Beef Board approval of a budget amendment to reflect the split of funding between budget categories affected by their decisions. REFERENCES: https://www.nationalbeefwire.com/cattlemen-s-beef-board-approves-38-million-budget-lists-priorities-it-will-invest USDA OK's New Tech For Beef Grading USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) is moving forward with the use of three new vision grading instruments to support the agency's beef grading program. AMS approved the use of new technologies that produce marbling scores for Prime, Choice and Select grades for beef, according to a statement announcing the tech updates. The three new vision grading instruments also will assist in the application of Yield Grades and measuring of the ribeye area that often is used in scores of Certified Beef Programs. These certifications are issued by a range of organizations and companies, including Certified Angus Beef, National Beef Certified Premium, Tyson's Chairman's Reserve Certified Premium Beef and Nolan Ryan's Tender Aged Beef, for example. The technology allows for consistent, uniform application of USDA beef grades, which drive payments for producers, help value determinations for packers and communicate quality to U.S. consumers. China was the fourth largest destination for U.S. beef last year but President Donald Trump's tariffs on China starting in February soured trade relations. In March, China revoked export licenses for U.S. producers, leaving the beef industry with only a few eligible exporters. Compared to the first seven months of 2024, exports to China are down 46% and down 47% by value at $481 million. Among the top six destinations for U.S. beef, only South Korea booked a volume increase through July — up 9% by both volume and value. All the others, including Japan, Mexico, Canada and Taiwan, are off so far this year. However, according to a recent Rabo Research Report, global cattle prices continue to rise as global volumes are contracting. Although, for example, beef imports from Brazil into the U.S. rose 25% compared to last year in the first half of 2025, higher tariffs will have a material impact on the trade between Brazil and the US, analysts assured. In Europe, the tight market is also attracting higher imports. The latest round of U.S. tariffs included an additional 40% on the already existing 10% global rate and 26.4% non-quota duty on Brazilian beef imports. Brazil supplied a record volume of beef into the U.S. in the first half of 2025, and RaboResearch believes this additional tariff will have a material impact on the trade between Brazil and the U.S. Nearly a month after the U.S. began applying further import tariffs on Brazilian beef, shipments remain strong in a year-over-year comparison, and shipments to the U.S. have remained relatively stable even after the tariffs have taken effect. If you believe in second chances, Dallas Stars head coach Glen Gulutzan has a story or two he could share. After being relieved of his duties in 2013 by general manager Jim Nill, it's that same GM who has brought back Gulutzan to complete some unfinished business in Dallas.Engaging and insightful, Gulutzan clearly has the vision and sees the end game for a Stars team which has found different ways of falling short in each of the last three springs.Neil and Vic will also touch on some other league news, which includes the passing of a Hall-of-Fame netminder, a playoff salary cap and new fashion statements across the NHL.IN THIS EPISODE:[01:36] - Glen Gulutzan joins Neil and Vic and quickly recognizes the unique opportunity of joining a team that is among the NHL's elite.[02:23] - Gulutzan shares the experience of interviewing for the same job with the same GM who had fired him a dozen years earlier. He goes on to add how many familiar faces have remained with the Stars organization since his first go-round.[06:37] - Given the uniqueness of being re-hired by the GM who fired you, Vic poses to Neil whether he would have been able to do likewise given the the right conditions.[08:19] - Recollections of the ECHL days when Gulutzan was coaching in Las Vegas. While the Golden Knights put on a show now, they'd be hard-pressed to come up with some of the innovations introduced by the Wranglers.[10:45] - With six years behind the Wranglers bench between 2003-2009, Gulutzan shares whether he believed back then that the NHL could survive and thrive in Sin City.[13:07] - Evolving as a head coach through the minors to the NHL.[16:29] - Between his Dallas head coaching stints was a two-year run heading up the Flames. Gulutzan shares the importance of those two seasons leading up taking over the reins in Dallas again. [19:18] - Credited with helping the Edmonton Oilers becoming one of the most fearsome power play units in NHL history, Gulutzan takes over an offensively gifted group which will be less superstar driven and more a product of two very able units.[23:02] - Dallas has fallen in three consecutive Western Finals, the last two to Edmonton with Gulutzan as an assistant. Having played a role in exploiting the Stars in 2025 might be the secret sauce in fixing things come next spring.[25:54] - The top the hockey summit is in Florida. Thoughts on never altering the style of play from October-June.[28:37] - Wrapping up with the pronunciation of Glen's birthplace.[34:36] - News from around the NHL starts with the passing of Canadiens legend Ken Dryden, addressed the business component into the Carey Price trade to San Jose, the upcoming playoff salary cap, some fashion news and the 2025 US Hockey Hall of Fame Inductees. Plus industry news you need to hear, market reports and analysis, sales and events you need to know, and lots more on this all new episode of The Ranch It Up Radio Show. Be sure to subscribe on your favorite podcasting app or on the Ranch It Up Radio Show YouTube Channel. Season 5, EPISODE 253 Blue Roan Quarter Horses For Sale: Superior Bloodlines, Disposition, and Conformation For over 77 years, the Froelich Legacy Quarter Horse program has been dedicated to raising Quarter Horses with the kind of conformation, color, and disposition that make them stand out in any setting. From ranch work to the show pen, our horses are bred to perform with steady minds, strong builds, and eye-catching color. Breeding Legacy: Blue Roans Before They Were Cool Our roan program began with the AQHA stallion McKeag, whose influence established us as respected breeders of rare and beautiful Blue Roans. McKeag's legacy continues through his son FQHR McLovin, who has proven to pass on an even stronger disposition than his sire. Customers often remark that McLovin foals are “born broke” with a natural work ethic—colts and fillies that simply need to be taught the buttons. Our Current Stallions FQHR McLovin – A direct McKeag son carrying forward his sire's stamp with even more disposition and trainability. His foals are known for their honest minds and ability to go straight to work. Siring horses that have excelled in versatility and having sired a 6-time world champion in roping. FQHR Conagher – A younger stallion quickly making his mark. His foals show outstanding conformation, muscle definition, and personable, loving natures that make them a joy to raise. LHR Smart Sugar Boon – A powerful performance cross on foundation blood. His pedigree ties back to legends like Peptoboonsmal and Smart Little Lena, bringing athleticism and cow sense while maintaining the kind of mind we demand in our program. Our focus today is on producing horses with balanced conformation, proven genetics, and minds that fit any rider. Whether for ranch work, arena competition, or simply a trusted partner to ride, Froelich Legacy Quarter Horses are bred to handle the job and look good doing it. Annual Quarter Horse Production Sale: 3rd Saturday of September The Froelich Legacy Quarter Horses program proudly offers Blue Roan Quarter Horses for sale each year during the annual production sale, traditionally held on the third Saturday in September. These horses are more than just beautiful—they bring together the ideal combination of athletic ability, trainability, and color that discerning buyers want. The breeding philosophy is simple: breed Quarter Horses we love to ride—selecting bloodlines from the greats to produce horses with the perfect balance of cow sense, athletic ability, and a steady temperament. Whether pulling calves to the branding iron, roping in the arena, or enjoying a relaxed evening trail ride, these colorful Quarter Horses continually prove their versatility. Contact Froelich Legacy Quarter Horses For more information about the Froelich Legacy Quarter Horses program and to learn how disposition, color, and conformation are top priority, CONTACT US TODAY or visit our website HERE! Cattle Industry News Livestock Market Report & Outlook From Dr. Andrew Griffith The latest livestock comments from Livestock Marketing Specialist Dr. Andrew Griffith who said prices were strong for every class of animal offered on the market, which tends to bring optimism to all involved. This optimism leads to thoughts of expanding herd sizes to capitalize on the strong market. He continued by saying fed cattle traded unevenly steady last week. To put this market into perspective he asked the question, how many finished cattle does it take to purchase a new pickup truck? Assuming a 1,400-pound steer and an $80,000 pickup truck, it would take 23 head to have equal value. Using similar elementary math, it would have taken 27 head to purchase a similar yet slightly lower-priced truck in 2024, and it would have taken 25 to 26 head to purchase a similar pickup truck in 2021. This comparison means absolutely nothing other than the value of a finished steer has increased more than a pickup truck in relative terms. However, it is a rather small increase, relatively speaking. He wrapped up by saying how these relative prices change over time is not all that important. What is important is if cattle feeders are making money or not. Monthly cow prices in 2025 have climbed steadily, rising from $126 in January to a record $157/cwt in July, highlighting a strong and consistent upward trend throughout the year. For perspective, prices were just $62 in 2019, meaning values have surged $81/cwt over six years or a 131% increase. Looking further back, cow prices were $43 in 2003, rising steadily over the next decade to peak at $107 in 2014 and $103 in 2015. That historic run was followed by a multi-year downturn before the current rally pushed prices to unprecedented levels. REFERENCES: https://www.nationalbeefwire.com/u-s-cattle-report New World Screwworm Soaring In Mexico Mexico's official count shows that New World screwworm is continuing to spread rapidly in the country, keeping the U.S. border closed to cattle imports and redirecting production to the Mexican packing industry. According to Mexican government data viewed earlier and cited by the Reuters news agency, Authorities had a tally of 5,086 cases through August 17, 53% more than July's total. The infestations were mostly afflicting cattle, though cases were also reported in sheep, horses and dogs. USDA last month reinstated a ban on Mexican livestock imports — the third halt since late 2024 to imports of cattle to U.S. feedlots and packers. The agency announced a $750-million sterile fly production facility in Texas to combat the flesh-eating parasite, which had been eradicated in North America for decades before a rapid march northward starting two years ago in Panama. In Texas alone, USDA estimates a screwworm outbreak could cost the state $1.8 billion in livestock deaths and other costs. Cattle Industry News Govt. confirms first US human case of New World Screwworm The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the CDC confirmed the first human case in the U.S. of New World screwworm. According to a Reuters report, the individual is a Maryland resident, and they contracted screwworm during a trip to El Salvador. The CDC confirmed the diagnosis on Aug. 4, as did the Maryland Department of Health. In a statement to Reuters, HHS Spokesman Andrew G. Nixon said "The Risk to public health in the U.S. from this introduction is very low." In recent months, the U.S. government has taken considerable steps in protecting livestock from screwworm. Mid-July, USDA restarted its ban on Mexican livestock imports, and just last week, the agency announced a $750-million sterile fly production facility in Texas to combat the flesh-eating parasite's spread. In Texas alone, USDA estimates a screwworm outbreak could cost the state $1.8 billion in livestock deaths and other costs. Screwworms are parasitic flies whose females lay eggs in wounds on any warm-blooded animal. Once the eggs hatch, hundreds of screwworm larvae use their sharp mouths to burrow through living flesh, eventually killing their host if left untreated. Livestock traders and beef producers have been on edge about the potential for cases in cattle as prices have already hit record highs because the U.S. cattle herd is at its smallest size in seven decades. The Shat Crew trades leather jackets for Stetsons and arena rock for steel guitars with George Strait's acting debut, Pure Country. Commissioned by listener Frank Fall, this 1992 romantic drama follows country superstar "Dusty" Chandler, who's grown tired of the smoke, lasers, and screaming crowds. Disappearing from the spotlight, Dusty sets out to rediscover the joy of music—and maybe find love—while keeping his identity a secret. While Big D marvels at the film's unapologetic sincerity and old-school values, Gene wrestles with whether Dusty's “just folks” routine is genuine or a branding exercise. From ponytails to denim tuxedos, the crew dives into the movie's nostalgic Americana and debates whether its soundtrack is the true star. Is Pure Country a sweet, wholesome reminder of sticking to your roots, or is it just a two-hour George Strait music video? Grab your Wranglers, crack open a cold one, and find out. Plot Summary:In Pure Country, country music superstar Dusty Chandler grows disillusioned with the flashy trappings of fame and vanishes from the spotlight. Returning to his Texas roots under the radar, he rediscovers the simple joys of performing and falls for a local woman who doesn't recognize him. But as love blooms, Dusty must choose between the quiet life he's found and the career waiting for him.
