Welcome to the latest episode of the WAB Podcast, where we explore one of WAB's growing student-led traditions: the Night Market. Joining us are Audrey and Rachel from Grade 11, and Chloe from Grade 10, three of the students who helped make this event happen.  From cultural showcases and global cuisine to student performances and an all-new Open Mic stage, the Night Market was a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and cultural connection. For the first time, the event also welcomed students from APAC schools who were visiting WAB for a badminton tournament, adding an exciting dimension to the evening.  Audrey described the Night Market as a platform for student clubs to promote their missions, raise funds for meaningful causes, and highlight WAB's cultural diversity. It also provides a stage for performers to express themselves. The event, she explained, was shaped through student input: “During club meetings, we hosted brainstorming sessions to gather input from all club members, which helped make the event more successful, engaging, and fun for the students.”  Rachel reflected on why she got involved: “We all participated in last year's Night Market and had such a great time. That's why we wanted to help organize it this year.” Their goal was to carry the tradition forward and elevate it. This year's event featured over 10 student clubs, two local restaurants, and five parent groups: Chinese Link, Korean Link, ASEAN Link, Tiger Spirit, and Tiger Den. Coordinating all these groups took time, teamwork, and clear communication. Chloe shared what made this year feel different: “It was a bit different because we hosted it at the same time as the APAC tournament.” Opening the event to visiting students created new opportunities for connection and cultural exchange. One of the most memorable additions was the Open Mic session. Though organizers weren't sure if anyone would step forward, the response exceeded expectations as students from multiple schools joined in and shared the stage.  Of course, organizing an event of this scale wasn't without its challenges. When weather forced a last-minute change of venue, the team acted quickly to relocate the entire market indoors. Ciya, an artist since childhood, began her journey with ballet, later exploring circus arts and contortion. At sixteen, she discovered oriental dance, which became her true passion. Over her career, Ciya has performed at prestigious events, including for the Moroccan royal family and Gabon's presidential family, and appeared in the film L'Immortel. She has danced with notable Parisian companies and created her own, Sheherazade's, in 2009. On September 26th, 2024, Asheville NC and the surrounding areas were devastated by Hurricane Helene. Days before the hurricane hit, I along with my wife Amy retreated from the area for a scheduled trip. Witnessing the devastation from afar, we jumped into action to contribute, ultimately raising over $10,000 and bringing a truckload of essential items to the people of Asheville in need. In this episode, I'll share the challenges, triumphs, and touching moments of this journey, highlighting how the community continues to rally together to recover. For instance, local volunteers organized daily meal distributions, and a neighborhood group worked tirelessly to clear debris and provide shelter to those displaced. With this being National Mental Health Awareness Month, we also explore the emotional impact of enduring major natural disasters and how community support and camaraderie bring light to the darkest times. It allows them to save money and work without losing access to crucial government benefits like Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medicaid, which have strict asset limits of $2,000 for individuals and $3,000 for couples. The key features of an ABLE account include:Eligibility: Available to those who are blind or disabled before age 26 (rising to 46 in 2026).Savings Opportunity: Allows individuals to work and save without exceeding government asset limits.Tax Benefits: Often provides state tax deductions similar to 529 college savings plans.Contribution Limits: The lifetime maximum contribution limit aligns with 529 plans but should stay under $100,000 to avoid affecting SSI or Medicaid.Qualified Expenses: Can be used for day-to-day needs like food and rent, excluding vices like alcohol or gambling.No Impact on Government Benefits: ABLE account balances won't disqualify the individual from receiving SSI or Medicaid.It's important to note that in most states, there is a Medicaid payback provision, which allows the state to recover funds from the ABLE account to cover medical bills after the account holder's passing. We know by now that the old system is crumbling, that the old paradigms are no longer fit for purpose and we need to take part in the birth of something new: this is what this podcast is for. But what are the tools and how can we begin actually to build something relevant and useful within the strictures of a system that is still trying to cling onto legitimacy and power? Michael Haupt was a key figure in the widespread introduction of mobile telephones to South Africa ahead of the first all-race elections in 1994.  He was head-hunted soon after and the next decade saw him working around the globe in 16 cities on 6 continents.  He was in Thailand, taking a year out when he had a vision - an actual not-expected, not-planned, not-drug-or-meditation-mediated set of visions - that showed him how the world could look and feel like if we manage to craft a route through to what he calls the Transition Phase of our evolution. This moment was pivotal in his life. Now he's a 'Resilience Strategist' bridging between those businesses that are switched on enough to know that corporate greenwashing is no longer useful, and agile enough to find what is. He's building mycelial links to others who are working in this area and he's thinking deeply - so deeply - about where we could go and the actual logistics of how we might get there. I've been holding a lot of conversations on the back of launching Any Human Power about how we could build a future that is fit for purpose, where the human and More-Than-Human worlds flourish on a thriving planet. Thanks to Audrey Tang and Glen Weyl, I can see some of the routes through to political and technological change. Thanks to the Gaia Foundation, the Sustainable Food Trust, the million and one permaculture organisations around the world, I can see a way to mending our totally broken food and farming system. I can see ways to shift transport and power generation and city design.  What I have lacked, until now, is the ideas that might bring the great behemoth that is the corporate world on board in a way that's useful.  And this is what Michael is doing. As ever, this was a wide, deep conversation and it pushed the edge of my thinking, but it brought me to a place where I can more clearly see a few more steps forward. This week we're re-airing a conversation with had with Melanie Ford last year. Introduction - Melanie's backstoryMelanie Ford is the Senior Director of Construction for the University of Georgia Office of the University Architects. Before her move to the university, she worked for 20 years as a contractor and a Vice President of Whitsel Construction Services. She's the Georgia Chapter President for the Construction Owners of America and one of the co-founders and current President of Athens Area Women in Construction. Melanie shares about how a stressful project in an architecture class drove her into building science. She shares about how the dean of a professor told her that a woman wouldn't be able to tell “some 50-year-old, hard-hat-wearing man where the hell he can put his steel.” She shares about the challenges of finding a position in construction when she graduated, but a couple decades later, she is still happy with her choice to go into construction. She then tells us a bit about her family's move to Athens, Georgia.Melanie's work at UGAMelanie explains what it is that she does at the University of Georgia. She oversees all construction on campus, including major capital projects and major renovations. She and her department are responsible for ensuring architectural and construction continuity across campus. She tells us a bit about the significant increase in sports-related construction, including large softball and tennis stadium projects. In addition to that, there are the ongoing renovations of buildings constructed in the 1950s. Eddie asks about how the challenges differ between different types of projects. Melanie talks about a few of her favorite projects. Project Managers Eddie asks Melanie to provide feedback to project managers from an owner's perspective. She starts with thoughts about the importance of doing your research ahead of time in order to be aware of current conditions in a building set for renovation. She talks about timelines that were unnecessarily extended due to school-year schedules. She points out that many PMs tend to keep information and problems to themselves. This can be frustrating to people in positions like Melanie's because they often have resources and connections to solve those problems.Eddie asks about the bidding process in the university domain, which leads to a conversation about task-order contracting. She explains how this approach works with smaller contracts and lists of pre-approved contractors. We explore the ins and outs of the approval process for this group of contractors and how it is used by various governmental entities. Melanie says that owner-contractor relationships result in task-order projects being completed on time more often than hard-bid projects. Melanie discusses the types of feedback she provides to contractors who ask what changes they could make in order to increase their chances of future work with the university.Project initiation and design-buildEddie asks about the process a project goes through from the point of conception to completion. Melanie talks us through the process that sometimes involves legislators, wealthy donors. She gives an example of an unexpected connection between botanical gardens and a porcelain collection. She then walks us through the steps of a hypothetical project. Eddie asks Melanie for her opinion on design-build. She explains that she's not a huge fan of this approach in most cases. She says that she feels like the owner loses a certain amount of control because of the chain of command that results. She prefers for the builder, the designer, and the owner to perceive one another as peers. She also mentions that the historical character of campus architecture can suffer as a result of design-build dynamics. Eddie shares about a complicated, somewhat messy arrangement he experienced in a project a few years ago and asks Melanie for her thoughts. She shares her insights about the vision-setting, information exchange, and communication complications that can arise with unusual arrangements. Melanie shares a humorous story about how she was introduced to Bluebeam. Eddie shares some thoughts about the importance of old-school communication: actual talking.
