This week, Outrage + Optimism celebrate World Refugee Day with an interview with Gaia Vince. The hosts discuss how extreme heat, floods or natural disasters cause tens of millions of people to leave their homes behind. They look at how climate migration is happening now and will only happen faster and with greater impact. With each degree of temperature rise, a billion people will be displaced and huge swathes of the world will become uninhabitable. Gaia Vince, author of Nomad Century: How to Survive the Climate Upheaval talks to the hosts about the need for what she calls ‘honest pragmatism about human mobility'. With Gaia's steer, the hosts and Gaia discuss ways we might manage this inevitable movement of people; why the right wing, anti-immigration narrative might resonate but is not rooted in the fact that migrants historically enrich societies, both culturally and financially, and how to implement long-term solutions rather than patch-ups.     NOTES AND RESOURCES   Please fill out our 2024 Listener Feedback Survey! Hola amigos! Welcome back! Another diet app.  Diet culture is sneaky! While this app says it's not a diet, there are so many red flags to show it is another diet app! Instead of spending weeks and money towards this app, tune in to learn why you can just ignore it.  Highlights of this episode: How to Identify a DietApp's Approach is a DietDiet Research is Skewed What to Do Instead of DietingEpisode Summary: Diet culture – when will it end? Now, it is getting sneaky and claiming to not be a diet. But we see you diet culture. We see you. There's a newer app, that rhymes with “fruit of the loom,” that is claiming to not be a diet app. David, your host, delivers a close examination and evaluation of this claim. Spoiler alert, this app is totally a diet. But, let's nerd out over why! Knowing why you can totally ignore this app is empowering and will help you maintain an anti-diet mentality that will be more beneficial for your health in the long run. Tune in to learn about who created this app, how it recycles old dieting techniques, and what the app's own research actually shows. This company's app is a diet, but this is not about pointing fingers of intentional wrong doing, rather an example how our implicit biases play out in the real world. David brings in critical thinking and provides a more self-compassion approach towards habit changing. Intuitive eating helps us connect to ourselves through interoceptive awareness. While diet culture wants to blame the food and food culture, maybe there are other things to be mindful of during this busy time of year. Whether the holidays drive you to eat more or less, staying present and creating space for your self-care is key to managing the holiday stress. This episode was recorded when we were together during Las Vegas Market in April 2021. The blurred line between design influencers and designers can make it challenging for someone outside of the design industry to understand why they're each different Feedback from our 2021 Listener Feedback Survey suggested a number of designer influencers for potential interview We talk about what we're looking for in a guest episode and interview We focus on the value a designer can offer to all of our listeners when we consider them for an episode The main difference in the business model of design influencers is selling product - either through wholesale designer-exclusive vendors or via retail goods. It's possible to be a design tastemaker without monetizing it to become an influencer Amber Interiors and Studio McGee have been examples for many designers. Amber Lewis recently partnered with http://www.portolapaints.com/ (Portola Paints) on work for her own home, and launched her own line with https://www.anthropologie.com/amber-lewis?utm_medium=paid_search&utm_source=google&utm_source=Google&utm_content=US_-_Designer_-_Amber_Lewis_-_General&utm_term=Amber_Lewis_Home&utm_campaign=US_-_Designer_-_Amber_Lewis&creative=484044549004&device=c&matchtype=b&network=g&gclid=Cj0KCQjwvr6EBhDOARIsAPpqUPG3rUNqz-0Cmj5Qc4gqmzxQqo-w4IILuAHP632JRFRYpRXYsS4zCLEaAp62EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds (Anthropologie) Ginny MacDonald talked about her partnership with Lulu & Georgia when we interviewed her for https://player.captivate.fm/episode/ba0813b8-0125-4c42-a781-d0dbcbec94d0/ (Episode 6) We talk about developing a strategy to build a following and understanding the "why" a follower base can help you depending on your business growth goals Not all designers want a boutique or a shop Designer led e-commerce platforms like https://www.kathykuohome.com/ (Kathy Kuo Home) or https://www.burkedecor.com/ (Burke Decor) sell a lot of products from wholesale designer sources Your own home can be a great place to experiment with your design style and push your creative limits Consider using blogging as a method to build trust with potential clients and build your audience More content on Pinterest and increasing your SEO performance can increase traffic to help clients find you There aren't as many influencers who are actively working interior designers We can learn a lot from influencers about marketing strategies, how they build their audiences, and how they present themselves authentically As designers we need to get out of our own heads and put ourselves out there on...
